Abstract
Three different types of electron-transferring metallo-ATPases are able to couple ATP hydrolysis to the reduction of low-potential metal sites, thereby energizing an electron. Besides the Fe-protein known from nitrogenase and homologous enzymes, two other kinds of ATPase with different scaffolds and cofactors are used to achieve a unidirectional, energetic, uphill electron transfer to either reduce inactive Co-corrinoid-containing proteins (RACE-type activators) or a second iron-sulfur cluster-containing enzyme of a unique radical enzymes family (archerases). We have found a new cofactor in the latter enzyme family, that is, a double-cubane cluster with two [4Fe4S] subclusters bridged by a sulfido ligand. An enzyme containing this cofactor catalyzes the ATP-dependent reduction of small molecules, including acetylene. Thus, enzymes containing the double-cubane cofactor are analogous in function and share some structural features with nitrogenases.

Abstract
Light-driven micropumps, which are based on electro-osmosis with the electric field generated by photocatalytic reactions, are among most attractive research topics in chemical micromotors. Until now, research in this field has mainly been focused on the directional motion or collective behavior of microparticles, which lack practical applications. In this study, we have developed a photowelding strategy for repeated photoinduced conductivity recovery of cracked flexible circuits. We immersed the circuit in a suspension of conductive healing particles and applied photoillumination to the crack; photocatalysis of a predeposited pentacene (PEN) layer triggered electro-osmotic effects to gather conductive particles at the crack, thus leading to conductivity recovery of the circuit. This photowelding strategy is a novel application of light-driven micropumps and photocatalysis for conductivity restoration.

Abstract
C3'-deoxygenation of aminoglycosides results in their decreased susceptibility to phosphorylation thereby increasing their efficacy as antibiotics. However, the biosynthetic mechanism of C3'-deoxygenation is unknown. To address this issue, aprD4 and aprD3 genes from the apramycin gene cluster in Streptomyces tenebrarius were expressed in E. coli and the resulting gene products were characterized in vitro. AprD4 is shown to be a radical S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) enzyme, catalyzing homolysis of SAM to 5'-deoxyadenosine (5'-dAdo) in the presence of paromamine. [4'-(2) H]-Paromamine was prepared and used to show that its C4'-H is transferred to 5'-dAdo by AprD4, during which the substrate is dehydrated to a product consistent with 4'-oxolividamine. In contrast, paromamine is reduced to a deoxy product when incubated with AprD4/AprD3/NADPH. These results show that AprD4 is the first radical SAM diol-dehydratase and, along with AprD3, is responsible for 3'-deoxygenation in aminoglycoside biosynthesis.

Abstract
Salts that contain radical cations of benzidine (BZ), 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), 2,2',6,6'-tetraisopropylbenzidine (TPB), and 4,4'-terphenyldiamine (DATP) have been isolated with weakly coordinating anions [Al(OR(F))(4)](-) (OR(F) = OC(CF(3))(3)) or SbF(6)(-). They were prepared by reaction of the respective silver(I) salts with stoichiometric amounts of benzidine or its alkyl-substituted derivatives in CH(2)Cl(2). The salts were characterized by UV absorption and EPR spectroscopy as well as by their single-crystal X-ray structures. Variable-temperature UV/Vis absorption spectra of BZ(·)(+)[Al(OR(F))(4)](-) and TMB(·)(+)[Al(OR(F))(4)](-) in acetonitrile indicate an equilibrium between monomeric free radical cations and a radical-cation dimer. In contrast, the absorption spectrum of TPB(·)(+)SbF(6)(-) in acetonitrile indicates that the oxidation of TPB only resulted in a monomeric radical cation. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that in the solid state BZ and its methylation derivative (TMB) form radical-cation π dimers upon oxidation, whereas that modified with isopropyl groups (TPB) becomes a monomeric free radical cation. By increasing the chain length, π stacks of π dimers are obtained for the radical cation of DATP. The single-crystal conductivity measurements show that monomerized or π-dimerized radicals (BZ(·)(+), TMB(·)(+), and TPB(·)(+)) are nonconductive, whereas the π-stacked radical (DATP(·)(+)) is conductive. A conduction mechanism between chains through π stacks is proposed.
