A Highly Lewis Acidic Strontium ansa ‐Arene Complex for Lewis Acid Catalysis and Isobutylene Polymerization

Stabilization of Potent Co(II)-based Lewis Acids with Weakly Basic Ligands

Pairing cations with weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) often renders them highly Lewis-acidic and extremely reactive. Although these features are often desirable, excessive reactivity of a cation may lead to decomposition of solvents or WCAs, hindering isolation, storage and practical use of such species. In an attempt to mitigate the problem, we introduce a series of readily available novel Co(II)-WCA salts with the metal center stabilized by weakly bound ligands: SO₂ , halogenated acetonitriles and nitromethane with comprehensive characterization including structural, magnetic and spectral (IR) properties as well as thermal stability assessment. The use of these simple yet rarely encountered ligands yields mostly stable and highly Lewis-acidic complexes, in some cases comparable to SbF₅ according to calculated Fluoride Ion Affinities. Highly acidic character of the species is also reflected in observed reactivity. Since the most convenient route towards the Co(II) complexes leads through silver salts, the results are complemented with characterization of a series of novel Ag(I) complexes with abovementioned ligands. Experimental part is backed with DFT calculations which gives insight into the structure and energetics of presented Co(II) complexes and shows that Co(II) center is available for substrates like olefins. This makes them good candidates for catalysts in reactions requiring the presence of Lewis acids.

Unsupported Mg-Alkene Bonding

The first intermolecular early main group metal-alkene complexes were isolated. This was enabled by using highly Lewis acidic Mg centers in the Lewis base-free cations (Me BDI)Mg+ and (tBu BDI)Mg+ with B(C6 F5 )4 - counterions (Me BDI=CH[C(CH3 )N(DIPP)]2 , tBu BDI=CH[C(tBu)N(DIPP)]2 , DIPP=2,6-diisopropylphenyl). Coordination complexes with various mono- and bis-alkene ligands, typically used in transition metal chemistry, were structurally characterized for 1,3-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cyclooctene, 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene, 2,3-dimethylbuta-1,3-diene, and 2-ethyl-1-butene. In all cases, asymmetric Mg-alkene bonding with a short and a long Mg-C bond is observed. This asymmetry is most extreme for Mg-(H2 C=CEt2 ) bonding. In bromobenzene solution, the Mg-alkene complexes are either dissociated or in a dissociation equilibrium. A DFT study and AIM analysis showed that the C=C bonds hardly change on coordination and there is very little alkene→Mg electron transfer. The Mg-alkene bonds are mainly electrostatic and should be described as Mg2+ ion-induced dipole interactions.

Partnering a Three-Coordinate Gallium Cation with a Hydroborate Counter-Ion for the Catalytic Hydrosilylation of CO2

A novel β-diketiminate stabilized gallium hydride, (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H (where (^Dipp L)={HC(MeCDippN)₂ }, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl and Ad=1-adamantyl), has been synthesized and shown to undergo insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ga-H bond under mild conditions. In this case, treatment of the resulting κ¹ -formate complex with triethylsilane does not lead to regeneration of the hydride precursor. However, when combined with B(C₆ F₅ )₃ , (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H catalyses the reductive hydrosilylation of CO₂ . Under stoichiometric conditions, the addition of one equivalent of B(C₆ F₅ )₃ to (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H leads to the formation of a 3-coordinate cationic gallane complex, partnered with a hydroborate anion, [(^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)][HB(C₆ F₅ )₃ ]. This complex rapidly hydrometallates carbon dioxide and catalyses the selective reduction of CO₂ to the formaldehyde oxidation level at 60 °C in the presence of Et₃ SiH (yielding H₂ C(OSiEt₃ )₂ ). When catalysis is undertaken in the presence of excess B(C₆ F₅ )₃ , appreciable enhancement of activity is observed, with a corresponding reduction in selectivity: the product distribution includes H₂ C(OSiEt₃ )₂ , CH₄ and O(SiEt₃ )₂ . While this system represents proof-of-concept in CO₂ hydrosilylation by a gallium hydride system, the TOF values obtained are relatively modest (max. 10 h^-1 ). This is attributed to the strength of binding of the formatoborate anion to the gallium centre in the catalytic intermediate (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad){OC(H)OB(C₆ F₅ )₃ }, and the correspondingly slow rate of the turnover-limiting hydrosilylation step. In turn, this strength of binding can be related to the relatively high Lewis acidity measured for the [(^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)]⁺ cation (AN=69.8).
