Abstract
The carbon nanorings, possessing a radial π system, have garnered significant attention primarily due to their size-dependent photophysical properties and the presence of a unique curved π-conjugated cavity. This is evidenced by the rapid proliferation of publications. Furthermore, the integration of building blocks into CPP skeletons can confer [n]CPPs with novel and exceptional photophysical and electronic characteristics, as well as chiral properties and host-guest interactions, thereby augmenting the diversity of [n]CPPs. Notably, the curved π surface structures and concave cavity of carbon nanorings enable them to host aromatic or non-aromatic guests with a complementarily curved surface, resulting in interesting binary or ternary complexes. This review provides a comprehensive treatment of literature reports on binary and ternary complexes, focusing on both their host-guest interactions and properties. It is important to note that the scope of this review is limited to host-guest chemistry in binary and ternary complexes based on π-conjugated carbon nanorings.

Abstract
Three derivatives of macrocyclic cage compounds consisting of diarylanthracene and triptycene units were synthesized. These nanocages formed host-guest complexes with C60 and other fullerene guests as confirmed by 1 H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constant of the mesityl and 2,4,6-tributoxyphenyl derivatives with C60 was determined to be 2.2 × 104 L mol-1 , which was larger than that of the pentafluorophenyl derivative. Direct experimental evidence of the complexation was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis: the guest C60 molecule was included in the cavity via multipoint CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. Dynamic disorders of the included C60 molecule in variable-temperature X-ray analysis indicated uniaxial motion, such as gyroscopic motion. The unique dynamic behavior of the spherical C60 rotor anchored by the cage stator via CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the crystal, as well as substituent effects on the association properties, are discussed with the aid of DFT calculations.

Abstract
Large scale synthesis of cycloparaphenyleneacetylenes has been challenging due to low macrocyclization yields and harsh aromatization methods that often decompose strained alkynes. Herein, a cis-stilbene-based building block is subjected to alkyne metathesis macrocylization. The following sequence of alkene-selective bromination and dehydrobromination afforded a [8]cycloparaphenyleneacetylene derivative in high yield with good scalability. X-Ray crystal structure and computational analysis revealed a unique same-rim conformation for the eight methyl groups on the nanohoop.

Abstract
For over 100 years, known bent C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C compounds have been limited to those with organic (I) and all-carbon (II) scaffoldings. Here, we computationally report a novel type (III) of bent C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C compound, i.e., C2Al4F6-01, which is the energetically global minimum isomer and bears an inorganic-metallic scaffolding and unexpected click reactivity.

Abstract
Since 1996, a growing number of strained macrocycles, comprising only sp2 - or sp-hybridized carbon atoms within the ring, have become synthetically accessible, with the [n]cycloparaphenyleneacetylenes (CPPAs) and the [n]cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) being the most prominent examples. Now that robust and relatively general synthetic routes toward a diverse range of nanohoop structures have become available, the research focus is beginning to shift towards the exploration of their properties and applications. From a supramolecular chemistry perspective, these macrocycles offer unique opportunities as a result of their near-perfect circular shape, the unusually high degree of shape-persistence, and the presence of both convex and concave π-faces. In this Minireview, we give an overview on the use of strained carbon-rich nanohoops in host-guest chemistry, the preparation of mechanically interlocked architectures, and crystal engineering.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of two conjugated macrocycles that are formed from the end-to-end linking of stilbenes. We have named these macrocycles cyclostilbenes. The two cyclostilbene isomers created in this study differ in the configuration of the double bond in their subunits. These macrocycles are formed selectively through a stepwise reductive elimination from a tetraplatinum precursor and subsequent photoisomerization. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of channel architectures in the solid state that can be filled with guest molecules. The cyclostilbene macrocycles emit blue light with fluorescence quantum yields that are high (>50%) and have photoluminescence lifetimes of ∼0.8-1.5 ns. The breadth and large Stokes shift in fluorescence emission, along with broad excited-state absorption, result from strong electronic-vibronic coupling in the strained structures of the cyclostilbenes.

Abstract
Azobenzenes in particular have been proved to have a robust photo-response, in which their configuration can transform between the trans- and cis-form upon UV-visible irradiation. Accordingly, azobenzene-containing molecules are frequently applied in the design of the guests, involving so-called host-guest chemistry. In this paper, a novel photo-responsive nanoring host molecule ([4]AB) has been designed by introducing four azobenzene groups onto the ring, and interactions between the designed nanoring host and fullerenes C60 and C70 guests were investigated at both the M06-L/MIDI! as well as M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory. By analyzing the geometric characteristics and host-guest binding energies, it is revealed that the designed [4]AB with diameter ca. 13.4 Å is an ideal host molecule for the encapsulation of guests C60 and C70 fullerene. Meanwhile, inferred from UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, the guest C60 and C70 could be facilely released from the cavity of the [4]AB via configuration transformation between trans- and cis-form of the host under 474 and 506 nm photo-irradiation, respectively. Frontier orbital features, weak interaction regions, infrared spectroscopy and (1)H NMR spectra have also been theoretically simulated. The present work would provide a new strategy for facile reversible encapsulation and release of fullerene guest by a novel nanoring host.

Abstract
We report structural characterization of a new member of m-phenylene ethynylene ring family. This shape-persistent macrocycle also co-crystallizes with hexafluoro-, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-, 1,3,5-trifluoro, and 1,4-difluorobenzene. The four complexes are almost isostructural, and all show the fluoroarene included into the central cavity of the macrocycle. Characterized by multiple short C - H⋅⋅⋅F - C contacts, these inclusion complexes further dimerize in the solid state into a 2+2 assembly, in which the two macrocycles embrace each other by their large hydrophobic groups that are rotated by 60° relative to one another.

Abstract
A series of single-walled carbon nanotube precursors, C3h-symmetric cyclotri(ethynylene)(biphenyl-2,4'-diyl) and cyclotri(ethynylene)(p-terphenyl-2,4″-diyl), have been prepared by a linear stepwise oligomerization-cyclization route and by statistical intermolecular cyclooligomerization. In addition to producing these members of a novel class of arylene ethynylene macrocycles, 1 and 2, the latter statistical process produces the smaller cyclic dimer, cyclodi(ethynylene)(p-terphenyl-2,4″-diyl) and the larger cyclic tetramer cyclotetra(ethynylene)(biphenyl-2,4'-diyl). These macrocycles display large Stokes shifts in their fluorescence spectra. Their biphenyl or terphenyl connectivity prevents these macrocycles from achieving full planarity in the ground state, and the ethynylene moieties could provide synthetic access to cyclic arylene oligomers and discrete carbon nanotube segments.

Abstract
The title compound, C26H22O4, is a derivative of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene substituted by four methoxy groups at the terminal benzene rings. The asymmetric unit consists of two half-molecules; one centrosymmetric molecule is planar but the other is non-planar, with dihedral angles of 67.7 (1)° between the central benzene ring and the terminal benzene rings. In the crystal structure, molecules form a zigzag molecular network due to π–π [the interplanar and centroid–centroid distances between the benzene rings are 3.50 (1) and 3.57 (1) Å, respectively] and C—H⋯π interactions (2.75 Å). Introduction of the four methoxy groups results in the supramolecular architecture.

Abstract
High-level quantum-chemical methods show that the binding in the inclusion complex of hexamethylbenzene (HMB) in 6-cycloparaphenilacetylene (6-CPPA) cannot be explained only in terms of electrostatic interactions-caused by the polarization associated to curved pi-conjugated systems-and the inclusion of dispersion forces is definitely needed. The theoretical description of van der Waals interactions is notoriously complicated and in fact some DFT methods cannot even predict the existence of the relatively small supramolecular nanoring studied here. However, ab initio MP2 calculations agree with experimental data and show that, in the considered complex, the HMB fragment is placed at the center of the 6-CPPA ring. The binding energy, which is not available experimentally, is calculated to be around -14 kcal mol(-1) with a lower limit of -19 kcal mol(-1).

Abstract
We present a theoretical study of the electronic and mechanical properties of graphyne-based nanotubes (GNTs). These semiconducting nanotubes result from the elongation of one-third of the covalent interconnections of graphite-based nanotubes by the introduction of yne groups. The effect of charge injection on the dimensions of GNTs was investigated using tight-binding calculations. Low amounts of electron injection are predicted to cause qualitatively different responses for armchair and zigzag graphyne nanotubes. Although the behavior is qualitatively similar to the usual carbon nanotubes, the charge-induced strains are predicted to be smaller for the GNTs than for ordinary single walled carbon nanotubes.
