A Stable Organic π-Radical of a Zinc(II)-Copper(I)-Zinc(II) Complex of Decaphyrin

Copper(I) complexes bearing pyrrole-bridged S,N and N-donor ligands as catalysts for tandem hydroamination-alkynylation: effect of anions on product formation

In this study, the reaction between 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(dimethylaminomethyl)pyrrole and thiophenol under heating conditions afforded the new ligand 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5-(phenylthiomethyl)pyrrole 2. The reaction of 2 with meta-chloroperbenzoic acid provided sulfoxide 3 and sulfone 4 group-containing ligands. The reaction of 2 with copper(I) halides provided the binuclear complexes [Cu(μ-X){μ-C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SPh)-κ2-S,N}]2 (X = Cl, Br and I, 5-7) in high yields. Conversely, the analogous reaction of 4 with copper(I) halides yielded two types of complexes, three coordinate bi- and mononuclear of the type [Cu(μ-Cl){C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}]28 and [CuX{C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}2], X = Br, 9 and I, 10. When the reaction was carried out in the presence of KPF6, the two-coordinate complex [Cu{C4H3N-2-(CH2Me2pz)-5-(CH2SO2Ph)-κ1-N}2]PF6-11a was isolated, whereas its BF4- analogue 11b was synthesized by the reaction of 8 with AgBF4. The structures of these complexes were determined using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. These copper complexes catalyzed the hydroamination-alkynylation reaction between several secondary amines and alkyl and aryl terminal alkynes. Using 1 mol% of complexes 5-10 as catalysts, both tri- and tetra-substituted propargylamines were isolated. Alternatively, phenylacetylene and different secondary amines afforded the corresponding trisubstituted propargylamines as the major products and alkyl terminal alkynes gave the tetrasubstituted products in excellent yields. In addition, the role of counter anions such as TfO-, PF6-, BF4-, PO43- and Ph4B- on the product selectivity was studied. When fluorinated anions such as TfO-, PF6-, and BF4- were present with the copper complexes, the hydroamination-hydrovinylation product 1-aminodiene 23 was observed, which was not formed with PO43-, Ph4B- or halide ions. Specifically, TfO- and PF6- favored the formation of 23, while BF4- favored the tetrasubstituted product as the major product. This was further supported by the isolated copper(I) complexes containing PF6- and BF4- and by other specific reactions. The peaks for enamines and [LCu]+ species in the HRMS spectra of the reaction mixtures and the isolation of the morpholinium copper(I) salt support the proposed mechanism.

[22]Pentaphyrins(2.0.1.1.0) Displaying N-Fusion, Pyrrole-Rearrangement, and Dimerization Reactions Upon Oxidation and Metalation

Exploration of expanded porphyrins with unprecedented reactivities has remained important. Here [22]pentaphyrins(2.0.1.1.0) were synthesized as a constitutional isomer of sapphyrin by acid-catalyzed cyclization of 1,14-dibromo-5,10-diaryltripyrrin with 1,2-di(pyrro-2-ly)ethenes. These pentaphyrins display roughly planar structures and varying aromaticities depending upon the vinylene structures. The 19,20-ditolyl pentaphyrin gave an N-fused product and an unprecedented pyrrole-rearranged product, depending upon the oxidation conditions. Remarkably, upon the metalation with CuCl, the N-fused product and the pyrrole-rearranged product afforded an inner β-β coupled face-to-face CuII complex dimer and an outer β-β coupled lateral CuII complex dimer, respectively, in fairly good yields. Further, [22]pentaphyrin(2.0.1.1.0) fused with a NiII porphyrin was effectively dimerized upon oxidation with MnO2 to give a 16-16' directly linked dl-dimer.

Synthesis of NiII porphyrin-NiII 5,15-diazaporphyrin hybrid tapes

NiII porphyrin (P) and NiII 5,15-diazaporphyrin (DAP) hybrid tapes were synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of meso- or β-borylated P with β-brominated DAP followed by intramolecular oxidative fusion reactions. Meso-β doubly linked hybrid tapes were synthesized by oxidation of singly linked precursors with DDQ-FeCl3. Synthesis of triply linked hybrid tapes was achieved by oxidation with DDQ-FeCl3-AgOTf with suppression of peripheral β-chlorination. In these tapes, DAP segments were present as a 20π-electronic unit, but their local antiaromatic contribution was trivial. Remarkably, these hybrid tapes were stable and exhibited extremely enhanced absorption bands in the NIR region and multiple reversible redox waves. A pentameric hybrid tape showed a remarkably sharp and red-shifted band at 1168 nm with ε = 5.75 × 105 M-1 cm-1. Singly linked P-DAP dyads were oxidized with DDQ-FeCl3 to give stable radicals, which were oxidized further to afford dimeric hybrid tapes possessing a nitrogen atom at the peripheral-side meso-position.

A Nanographene-Porphyrin Hybrid for Near-Infrared-Ii Phototheranostics

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI)-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) window has been attracting attention as a promising cancer theranostic platform. Here, it is reported that the π-extended porphyrins fused with one or two nanographene units (NGP-1 and NGP-2) can serve as a new class of NIR-responsive organic agents, displaying absorption extending to ≈1000 and ≈1400 nm in the NIR-I and NIR-II windows, respectively. NGP-1 and NGP-2 are dispersed in water through encapsulation into self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs), achieving high photothermal conversion efficiency of 60% and 69%, respectively, under 808 and 1064 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, the NIR-II-active NGP-2-NPs demonstrated promising photoacoustic responses, along with high photostability and biocompatibility, enabling PAI and efficient NIR-II PTT of cancer in vivo.

Chiral Fluorescent Metal-Organic Framework with a Pentanuclear Copper Cluster as an Efficient Luminescent Probe for Dy3+ Ion and Cyano Compounds

Luminescent probes have been used for the detection of various heavy metals and toxic compounds. A novel sensor with excellent sensitivity and selectivity is in high demand. Herein, we designed and synthesized a three-dimensional copper-organic framework of "pcu" α-Po primitive cubic topology with a Schläfli symbol of {4.4.4.4.4.4.4.4.4.4.4.4.*.*.*}. By taking advantage of metal clusters and a triazole ligand as the metal-organic framework (MOF) components, the newly obtained MOF is stable in various environments and can be potentially used as the sensor. Remarkably, this MOF-based sensor shows high sensitivity and selectivity toward a dysprosium ion (Dy³⁺) in a multiple-lanthanide mixed solution. Besides, it exhibits luminescent quenching toward various cyano compounds. This chiral cluster-based network provides a potential luminescent probe for various inorganic and organic compounds with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and bonding analysis of two-coordinate copper(I) and silver(I) complexes of pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine): new metal-pyrrole ring π-interactions

The reaction between 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole and Me3SiN3 gave the new pyrrole-based bis(phosphinimine) L1H in an excellent yield. L1H reacts with [CuCl(COD)]2, AgBF4, or AgOTf to give the corresponding two-coordinate mononuclear ionic complex formulated as [M{(L1H)-κ2N,N}]+[X]- where M = Cu and Ag; X = [CuCl2], BF4 or OTf. Their single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the two-coordinate geometry formed by the chelate bonding mode of L1H. These 10-membered metalacycles exhibit planar chirality and were also characterized by spectroscopic methods. In addition, in all three structures, there exists a hitherto unknown π-interaction between the pyrrole ring atoms and metal, represented as η2-(Cα-N) in the copper(i) complex, and η3-(Cα-N-Cα') in the silver(i) complexes. These weak interactions were supported by DFT calculations in terms of their electron densities, non-covalent interaction plots and the decrease in the aromaticity of the pyrrole ring.

Near-Infrared-III-Absorbing and -Emitting Dyes: Energy-Gap Engineering of Expanded Porphyrinoids via Metallation

The synthesis of organometallic complexes of modified 26π-conjugated hexaphyrins with absorption and emission capabilities in the third near-infrared region (NIR-III) is described. Symmetry alteration of the frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) of bis-Pd^II and bis-Pt^II complexes of hexaphyrin via N-confusion modification led to substantial metal d_π -p_π interactions. This MO mixing, in turn, resulted in a significantly narrower HOMO-LUMO energy gap. A remarkable long-wavelength shift of the lowest S₀ →S₁ absorption beyond 1700 nm was achieved with the bis-Pt^II complex, t-Pt₂ -3. The emergence of photoacoustic (PA) signals maximized at 1700 nm makes t-Pt₂ -3 potentially useful as a NIR-III PA contrast agent. The rigid bis-Pd^II complexes, t-Pd₂ -3 and c-Pd₂ -3, are rare examples of NIR emitters beyond 1500 nm. The current study provides new insight into the design of stable, expanded porphyrinic dyes possessing NIR-III-emissive and photoacoustic-response capabilities.

Figure-eight Octaphyrin Bis-Ge(IV) Complexes: Synthesis, Structures, Aromaticity, and Chiroptical Properties

Highly twisted structures of expanded porphyrin provide a prominent basis to unravel the relationship between aromaticity and chirality. Here we report the synthesis of bis-Ge(IV) complexes of [38]octaphyrin that display rigid figure-eight structures. Two bis-Ge(IV) [38]octaphyrin isomers with respect to the stereochemistry of the axial hydroxy groups on the germanium ions were obtained and found to be aromatic. Upon oxidation with MnO₂ , these [38]octaphyrin complexes were converted to a single syn-type isomer of [36]octaphyrin with retained figure-eight conformation. The enantiomers have been successfully separated by HPLC equipped with a chiral stationary phase. While aromatic [38]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes showed quite large molar circular dichroism of up to Δϵ=1500 M^-1 cm^-1 with a dissymmetry factor g_abs of 0.035, weakly antiaromatic [36]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes underscored moderate values; Δϵ=540 M^-1 cm^-1 with g_abs of 0.023. Thus, the figure-eight octaphyrin scaffold has been proved to be an attractive platform for novel chiroptical materials with tunable aromaticity.

Di-( m- m- m)terphenyl-Embedded Decaphyrin and Its Bis-Rh(I) Complex

A new rectangular-shaped carbadecaphyrin was successfully synthesized by introducing a terphenylene unit ( m- m- m) in the macrocyclic core. The terphenylene moiety offers an open framework with multiple binding pockets to stabilize two Rh(I) ions in the core. The photophysical and structural studies reveal the non-aromatic character of the ligand and its bis-Rh(I) complex.

Core-modified 48π and 42π decaphyrins: syntheses, properties and structures

Protonation triggered transition of a 48π nonaromatic decaphyrin to a 48π Hückel antiaromatic decaphyrin is reported: the flexibility of the macrocycle due to the presence of twelve meso carbon bridges facilitates such a transition through conformational change.

[30]Hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) as Aromatic Planar Ligand and Its Trinuclear Rhodium(I) Complex

Expanded porphyrins are attractive research targets because of their large and flexible structures, optical and electrochemical properties, and diverse coordination abilities. We are interested in the use of double bonds within expanded porphyrins because double bonds could conduct isomerization, expansion of π-conjugation, and giving different molecular geometry. We, thus, report [30]hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) 3H-1, which was synthesized by a simple condensation reaction of 1,2-di(pyrrol-2-yl)ethene and pentafluorobenzaldehyde under an acidic condition. The compound 3H-1 exhibited 30π aromatic property with a highly planar structure, displaying intense Soret- and weak Q-like absorption bands. The compound 3H-1 has a sufficient space and dipyrrin-like coordination sites in its cavity. Trinuclear rhodium(I) complex 3Rh-1 was obtained with [Rh(CO)₂Cl]₂ and exhibited six redox potentials.

Porphyrinoids as a platform of stable radicals

The non-innocent ligand nature of porphyrins was observed for compound I in enzymatic cycles of cytochrome P450. Such porphyrin radicals were first regarded as reactive intermediates in catabolism, but recent studies have revealed that porphyrinoids, including porphyrins, ring-contracted porphyrins, and ring-expanded porphyrins, display excellent radical-stabilizing abilities to the extent that radicals can be handled like usual closed-shell organic molecules. This review surveys four types of stable porphyrinoid radical and covers their synthetic methods and properties such as excellent redox properties, NIR absorption, and magnetic properties. The radical-stabilizing abilities of porphyrinoids stem from their unique macrocyclic conjugated systems with high electronic and structural flexibilities.

Triggering Redox Activity in a Thiophene Compound: Radical Stabilization and Coordination Chemistry

The synthesis, metalation, and redox properties of an acyclic bis(iminothienyl)methene L^- are presented. This π-conjugated anion displayed pronounced redox activity, undergoing facile one-electron oxidation to the acyclic, metal-free, neutral radical L^. on reaction with FeBr₂ . In contrast, the reaction of L^- with CuI formed the unique, neutral Cu₂ I₂ (L^. ) complex of a ligand-centered radical, whereas reaction with the stronger oxidant AgBF₄ formed the metal-free radical dication L^.2+ .

Flexible Porphyrinoids

This review underscores the conformational flexibility of porphyrinoids, a unique class of functional molecules, starting from the smallest triphyrins(1.1.1) via [18]porphyrins(1.1.1.1) and concluding with a variety of expanded porphyrinoids and heteroporphyrinoids, including the enormous [96]tetracosaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0). The specific flexibility of porphyrinoids has been documented as instrumental in the designing or redesigning of macrocyclic frames, particularly in the search for adjustable platforms for coordination or organometallic chemistry, anion binding, or mechanistic switches in molecular devices. A structural prearrangement to coordinate one or more metal ions has been outlined. The coverage of the topic focuses on representative examples of geometry or conformational rearrangements for each selected class of the numerous porphyrinoids accordingly categorized by the number of built-in carbo- or heterocycles.

A Doubly Zwitterionic Antiaromatic [28]Hexaphyrin Formed upon Deprotonation of 5,20-Di(N-methyl-4-pyridinium)-Substituted [28]Hexaphyrin

A rectangular 5,20-di(4-pyridyl) [26]hexaphyrin was reduced with NaBH₄ to give the corresponding twisted Möbius aromatic [28]hexaphyrin. Subsequent double N-methylation gave a dicationic 5,20-di(N-methyl-4-pyridinium) [28]hexaphyrin, which was converted to a doubly zwitterionic and Hückel antiaromatic [28]hexaphyrin upon deprotonation with sodium methoxide.

Highly planar diarylamine-fused porphyrins and their remarkably stable radical cations

Oxidative fusion of a meso-phenoxazino Ni(ii) porphyrin at high temperature gave a doubly phenoxazine-fused porphyrin as a highly planar diarylamine-fused porphyrin. One-electron oxidation of the corresponding β,β-dichlorinated compound gave a remarkably stable radical cation.

Oxidative fusion reactions of meso-phenoxazino Ni(ii) porphyrin were found to be temperature dependent, giving rise to either a doubly phenylene-fused product at room temperature or a singly phenoxazine-fused product at 70 °C. The latter was further oxidized to a doubly phenoxazine-fused Ni(ii) porphyrin, which was subsequently converted to the corresponding free base porphyrin and Zn(ii) porphyrin. Compared to previously reported diphenylamine-fused porphyrins that displayed a molecular twist, doubly phenoxazine-fused porphyrins exhibited distinctly different properties owing to their highly planar structures, such as larger fluorescence quantum yields, formation of an offset face-to-face dimer both in solution and the solid state, and the generation of a mixed-valence π-radical cation dimer upon electrochemical oxidation. One-electron oxidation of the phenoxazine-fused Ni(ii) porphyrin with Magic Blue gave the corresponding radical cation, which was certainly stable and could be isolated by separation over a silica gel column but slowly chlorinated at the reactive β-positions in the solid state. This finding led to us to examine β,β′-dichlorinated phenoxazine-fused and diphenylamine-fused Ni(ii) porphyrins, which, upon treatment with Magic Blue, provided remarkably stable radical cations to an unprecedented level. It is actually possible to purify these radical cations by silica gel chromatography, and they can be stored for over 6 months without any sign of deterioration. Moreover, they exhibited no degradation even after the CH₂Cl₂ solution was washed with water. However, subtle structural differences (planar versus partly twisted) led to different crystal packing structures and solid-state magnetic properties.

Switchable π-electronic network of bis(α-oligothienyl)-substituted hexaphyrins between helical versus rectangular circuit

The switching phenomena of conformation with π-electronic network through deprotonation–protonation processes were investigated by employing a series of 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1).

The switching phenomena of conformation with π-electronic network through deprotonation–protonation processes were investigated by employing a series of 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1). They showed significant changes in the absorption and emission spectra with deprotonation, and returned to the initial state with protonation. Through NMR measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, we found that the 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins, which possess acyclic, helical electronic networks involving oligothienyl chains in dumbbell conformations (type-I) in a neutral form, underwent effective deprotonation upon treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) to generate the corresponding dianions, which display cyclic electronic networks with enhanced aromaticity in rectangular conformations (type-II). Our quantum calculation results provide an unambiguous description for the switchable conformation and π-conjugation, which revealed that a deprotonation-induced enhanced aromatic conjugation pathway is involved in the switchable π-electronic network.
