Abstract
Inorganic metal sulfides have received extensive investigation as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, applications of crystalline organic hybrid metal sulfides as anode materials in LIBs are quite rare. In addition, combining the nanoparticles of crystalline organic hybrid metal sulfides with conductive materials is expected to enhance the electrochemical lithium storage performance. Nevertheless, due to the difficulty of harvesting the nanoparticles of crystalline organic hybrid metal sulfides, this approach has never been tried to date. Herein, nanoparticles of a crystalline organic hybrid cadmium antimony sulfide (1,4-DABH2)Cd2Sb2S6 (DCAS) were prepared by a top-down method, including the procedures of solvothermal synthesis, ball milling, and ultrasonic pulverization. Thereafter, the nanoparticles of DCAS with sizes of ∼500 nm were intercalated into graphene oxide nanosheets through a freeze-drying treatment and a DCAS@GO composite was obtained. Compared with the reported Sb2S3- and CdS-based composites, the DCAS@GO composite exhibited superior electrochemical Li+ ion storage performance, including a high capacity of 1075.6 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and exceptional rate tolerances (646.8 mAh g-1 at 5000 mA g-1). In addition, DCAS@GO can provide a high capacity of 705.6 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. Our research offers a viable approach for preparing the nanoparticles of crystalline organic hybrid metal sulfides and proves that intercalating organic hybrid metal sulfide nanoparticles into GO nanosheets can efficiently boost the electrochemical Li+ ion storage performance.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Abstract
Tellurostannates are traditionally prepared by multistep reactions using the tellurides SnTe, SnTe2, K4SnTe4, or A6SnTe6 (A = K, Rb, or Cs) as precursors, which are usually prepared by the molten reaction of alkali metals Sn and Te under harsh synthetic conditions. Differently, ternary Hg-tellurostannate hybrids [Mn(en)3]HgSnTe3(Te2) (1) (en = ethylenediamine), [Mn(dien)2]HgSnTe3(Te2) (2), and [Fe(dien)2]HgSnTe3(Te2) (3) (dien = diethylenetriamine) were synthesized by one-pot reactions using Sn and Te powders as starting materials in the presence of hydrazine under mild solvothermal conditions. In 1, HgTe3 and SnTe4 units are joined via Te-sharing to form a 1-D polymeric chain [HgSnTe3(Te2)]n2n-, while the [HgSnTe3(Te2)]n2n- chains in 2 and 3 are composed of HgTe4 and SnTe4 units. The common feature of the [HgSnTe3(Te2)2-]n chains in 1-3 is that they are constructed by both the telluride anion Te2- and the polytelluride anion Te22-. 1-3 exhibited strong photocurrent responses with current densities of 5.26, 3.38, and 3.94 μA cm-2, respectively. They showed effective photocatalytic activities for methylene blue degradation with degradation ratios in the range of 85.3-94.6% after light irradiation for 80 min. Investigation of the photocatalytic mechanism showed that •O2- radicals and h+ holes were the main active substances in the photodegradation.

Abstract
The reactions of [{(iPrDipNacNac)Mg}2] 1 (iPrDipnacnac = HC(iPrCNDip)2) with Ph3P═O at 100 °C afforded the phosphinate complex [(iPrDipNacNac)Mg(OPPh3)(OPPh2)] 3. Reactions of 1 with Ph3P═E (E = S, Se) proceeded rapidly at room temperature to low-coordinate chalcogenide complexes [{(iPrDipNacNac)Mg}2(μ-S)] 4 and [{(iPrDipNacNac)Mg}2(μ-Se)] 5, respectively. Similarly, reactions of RNHC═S ((MeCNR)2C═S with R = Me, Et, or iPr) with 1 afforded NHC adducts of magnesium sulfide complexes, [{(iPrDipNacNac)Mg(RNHC)}(μ-S){Mg(iPrDipNacNac)}] 6, that could alternatively be obtained by adding the appropriate RNHC to sulfide complex 4. Complex 4 reacted with 1-adamantylazide (AdN3) to give [{(iPrDipNacNac)Mg}2(μ-SN3Ad)] 7 and can form various simple donor adducts in solution, of which [(iPrDipNacNac)Mg(OAd)}2(μ-S)] 8a (OAd = 2-adamantanone) was structurally characterized. The nature of the ionic Mg-E-Mg unit is described by solution and solid-state studies of the complexes and by DFT computational investigations.

Abstract
Carbon-coated metal chalcogenide composites have been demonstrated as one type of promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, combining carbon materials with micronanoparticles of metal chalcogenide always involve complicated processes, such as polymer coating, carbonization, and sulfidation/selenization. To address this issue, herein, we reported a series of carbon-coated FexSey@CN (FexSey = FeSe2, Fe3Se4, Fe7Se8) composites prepared via the thermodynamic transformation of a crystalline organic hybrid iron selenide [Fe(phen)2](Se4) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). By pyrolyzing the bulk crystals of [Fe(phen)2](Se4) at different temperatures, FexSey microrods were formed in situ, where the nitrogen-doped carbon layers were coated on the surface of the microrods. Moreover, all the as-prepared FexSey@CN composites exhibited excellent sodium-ion storage capabilities as anode materials in SIBs. This work proves that crystalline organic hybrid metal chalcogenides can be used as a novel material system for the in situ formation of carbon-coated metal chalcogenide composites, which could have great potential in the application of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract
Chalcogenides are one of the most versatile inorganic materials families, further subdivided into a large variety of specific groups of compounds, ranging from neat binary or multinary solids and nanoparticles of the same formal compositions, both in crystalline or non-crystalline form, to complicated open-framework structures and cluster compounds, also including organ(ometall)ic derivates of the latter. The large variety regarding both the compositions and the structures is associated with an enormous variety of properties, ranging from simple or high-tech pigments through a multitude of opto-electronic devices and electrolytes to materials for ion separation or high-sophisticated catalysts. Naturally, this also goes hand in hand with a corrosponding breadth of synthesis strategies. Traditionally, chalcogenides have been accessed via high-temperature methods, which continuously have been replaced by lower-temperature approaches for economical and ecological reasons. Moreover, more recent methods also showed that new types of chalcogenide materials can be obtained under such milder conditions that are not accessible via traditional routes. To shed light onto one of the numerous families of chalcogenides, this feature article summarizes current achievements in the generation of multinary chalcogenidometallate-based clusters and networks via non-classical routes, using ionic liquids, surfactants, or hydrazine as reaction media at moderately elevated termperature.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs), especially task-specific ILs, are capable of dissolving various solids at moderate temperatures without the need for special reaction vessels. Direct synthesis of binary sulfides of B, Bi, Ge, Mo, Cu, Au, Sn, In, Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ga, Ni, Al, Zn, and Sb in [P66614]Cl was tested at 100 °C, i.e. below the melting point of sulfur. Under these conditions, substantial sulfide formation occurred only for nickel (Ni3S4, Ni3S2, NiS) and copper (Cu2S, CuS). Sb showed no formation of crystalline sulfide, but after addition of EtOH, an orange material precipitated which was identified as amorphous metastibnite. Subsequently, the dissolution of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3), the main source of antimony production, in the phosphonium-based ILs [P66614][OAc] and [P66614]Cl at 100 °C was studied in detail. The dissolution proceeds without H2S evolution, and amorphous Sb2S3 can be precipitated from these solutions. Heating Sb2S3 in the Lewis-acidic IL [BMIm]Cl·4.7AlCl3 led to the crystallization of [Sb13S16Cl2][AlCl4]5, which contains a new quadruple heterocubane cation.

Abstract
Bi2 S3 was dissolved in the presence of NaCl in the ionic liquid [BMIm]Cl ⋅ 4AlCl3 (BMIm=1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) through annealing the mixture at 180 °C. Upon cooling to room temperature, orange, air-sensitive crystals of Na(Bi7 S8 )[S(AlCl3 )3 ]2 [AlCl4 ]2 (1) precipitated. X-ray diffraction on single-crystals of 1 revealed a triclinic crystal structure that contains (Bi7 S8 )5+ spiro-dicubanes, [S(AlCl3 )3 ]2- tetrahedra triples, isolated [AlCl4 ]- tetrahedra, and sodium cations.

Abstract
Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are of growing interest as solvents for the resource‐efficient synthesis of inorganic materials. This Review covers chemical reactions of various deep eutectic solvents and types of ionic liquids, including metal‐containing ionic liquids, [BF4]−‐ or [PF6]−‐based ionic liquids, basic ionic liquids, and chalcogen‐containing ionic liquids. Cases in which cations, anions, or both are incorporated into the final products are also included. The purpose of this Review is to raise caution about the chemical reactivity of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents and to establish a guide for their proper use.

Abstract
Large discrete supertetrahedral clusters of metal chalcogenides are rare due to the difficulty of crystallizing solids in which the negative charge of the cluster is balanced by the positive charges of the countercations. Here, we describe a discrete ligand-free T3 supertetrahedral cluster, [Ga10S16(SH)4]6-, which was successfully synthesized in the presence of the superbase 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) using the neutral surfactant polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-400 as the reaction solvent. Protonated DBUH+ cations are incorporated into the crystal structure of the product, which can be formulated as [C9H17N2]6[Ga10S16(SH)4]. This compound, which represents the first example of a discrete ligand-free T3 cluster of gallium sulfide, was fully characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance. The results presented here indicate that the use of surfactants as solvents offers potential for the preparation of new compounds containing supertetrahedral clusters.

Abstract
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids have been widely applied in the synthesis of organic hybrid chalcogenidometalates, while the other types of ionic liquids are rarely tried. Reported here is the first application of a pyridinium-based ionic liquid in the preparation of two main-group heterometallic selenides featuring isomorphic three-dimensional frameworks. Of particular interest is that three gallium-tin selenides possessing another type of three-dimensional framework have been prepared by replacing the pyridinium-based ionic liquid with imidalolium-based ionic liquids under the same reaction conditions.

Abstract
Two chalcogenide crystalline compounds, [enH2][Ag4Sb2S6] (en = ethylenediamine) and [enH][Ag2SbS3], have been successfully synthesized by mild ionothermal and solvothermal means. [enH][Ag2SbS3] crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar space group Pc, and its linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties have been investigated for the first time. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements revealed that [enH][Ag2SbS3] affords powder SHG performance values of 2.5 × KDP @1064 nm and 0.2 × AgGaS2 @2100 nm. Additional particle size vs. SHG efficiency measurements indicate that [enH][Ag2SbS3] is phase-matchable. The calculated birefringence Δn is 0.177 at 1064 nm, which is sufficiently large (the largest value among NCS thioantimonates) to achieve phase matching. [enH2][Ag4Sb2S6] crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P21/c and its structure features a double-layered variant honeycomb-like anionic network parallel to the ac plane separated by [enH2]2+ cations. The optical band gaps of [enH2][Ag4Sb2S6] and [enH][Ag2SbS3] are found to be 2.37 and 2.53 eV, respectively. Theoretical studies using density functional theory have been implemented to further elucidate the relationship between the band structure and NLO properties in [enH][Ag2SbS3].

Abstract
The selective capture of radioactive cesium, strontium, and lanthanides from liquid nuclear waste is of great significance to environmental remediation and human health. Herein, the rapid and selective removal of Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+ ions is achieved by two metal sulfides (FJSM-SnS-2 and FJSM-SnS-3). Both structures feature [Sn3S7]n2n- layers with the mixed cations of [CH3NH3]+ and [Bmmim]+ (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium) as templates. However, the ratios and arrangements of mixed cations in the interlayered spaces are distinct. It is unprecedented that [CH3NH3]+ and [Bmmim]+ in FJSM-SnS-2 are alternatingly arranged in different interlayered spaces, whereas they in FJSM-SnS-3 are located in the same interlayered spaces. It is the first time that the ionic liquid cation and protonated organic amine have been simultaneously incorporated into metal sulfides. Both compounds show high capacities, rapid kinetics, and a wide pH active range for Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+. Even under excess Na+ ions, both show excellent selectivity in capturing trace Sr2+ and Eu3+ ions. FJSM-SnS-3 presents the highest KdEu to date. They still retain high removal efficiency even after intense β and γ radiation. Moreover, it is first confirmed by the in situ tracking method of mass spectrometry that the large-sized [Bmmim]+ ions are exchangeable. It is found that the arrangement of cations between interlayered spaces is a crucial factor affecting ion exchange performance. This work will likely change the consensus that large-sized organic cations are difficult to be exchanged and thus further highlight the great potential of metal sulfide ion exchangers for radionuclide remediation.

Abstract
Bi2 S3 was dissolved in the presence of either AuCl/PtCl2 or AgCl in the ionic liquids [BMIm]Cl ⋅ xAlCl3 (BMIm=1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium; x=4-4.3) through annealing the mixtures at 180 or 200 °C. Upon cooling to room temperature, orange, air-sensitive crystals of [BMIm](Bi4 S4 )[AlCl4 ]5 (1) or Ag(Bi7 S8 )[S(AlCl3 )3 ]2 [AlCl4 ]2 (2) precipitated, respectively. 1 did not form in the absence of AuCl/PtCl2 , suggesting an essential role of the metal cations. X-ray diffraction on single-crystals of 1 revealed a monoclinic crystal structure that contains (Bi4 S4 )4+ heterocubanes and [AlCl4 ]- tetrahedra as well as [BMIm]+ cations. The intercalation of the ionic liquid was confirmed via solid state NMR spectroscopy, revealing unusual coupling behavior. The crystal structure of 2 consists of (Bi7 S8 )5+ spiro-dicubanes, [S(AlCl3 )3 ]2- tetrahedra triples, isolated [AlCl4 ]- tetrahedra, and heavily disordered silver(I) cations. No cation ordering took place in 2 upon slow cooling to 100 K.

Abstract
Within the second funding period of the SPP 1708 "Material Synthesis near Room Temperature",which started in 2017, we were able to synthesize novel anionic species utilizing Ionic Liquids (ILs) both, as reaction media and reactant. ILs, bearing the decomposable and non-innocent methyl carbonate anion [CO3 Me]- , served as starting material and enabled facile access to pseudohalide salts by reaction with Me3 Si-X (X=CN, N3 , OCN, SCN). Starting with the synthesized Room temperature Ionic Liquid (RT-IL) [nBu3 MeN][B(OMe)3 (CN)], we were able to crystallize the double salt [nBu3 MeN]2 [B(OMe)3 (CN)](CN). Furthermore, we studied the reaction of [WCC]SCN and [WCC]CN (WCC=weakly coordinating cation) with their corresponding protic acids HX (X=SCN, CN), which resulted in formation of [H(NCS)2 ]- and the temperature labile solvate anions [CN(HCN)n ]- (n=2, 3). In addition, the highly labile anionic HCN solvates were obtained from [PPN]X ([PPN]=μ-nitridobis(triphenylphosphonium), X=N3 , OCN, SCN and OCP) and HCN. Crystals of [PPN][X(HCN)3 ] (X=N3 , OCN) and [PPN][SCN(HCN)2 ] were obtained when the crystallization was carried out at low temperatures. Interestingly, reaction of [PPN]OCP with HCN was noticed, which led to the formation of [P(CN)2 ]- , crystallizing as HCN disolvate [PPN][P(CN⋅HCN)2 ]. Furthermore, we were able to isolate the novel cyanido(halido) silicate dianions of the type [SiCl0.78 (CN)5.22 ]2- and [SiF(CN)5 ]2- and the hexa-substituted [Si(CN)6 ]2- by temperature controlled halide/cyanide exchange reactions. By facile neutralization reactions with the non-innocent cation of [Et3 HN]2 [Si(CN)6 ] with MOH (M=Li, K), Li2 [Si(CN)6 ] ⋅ 2 H2 O and K2 [Si(CN)6 ] were obtained, which form three dimensional coordination polymers. From salt metathesis processes of M2 [Si(CN)6 ] with different imidazolium bromides, we were able to isolate new imidazolium salts and the ionic liquid [BMIm]2 [Si(CN)6 ]. When reacting [Mes(nBu)Im]2 [Si(CN)6 ] with an excess of the strong Lewis acid B(C6 F5 )3 , the voluminous adduct anion {Si[CN⋅B(C6 F5 )3 ]6 }2- was obtained.

Abstract
Two types of layered sulfido stannates or a molecular cluster compound are obtained upon ionothermal treatment of the simple sulfido stannate salt K4 [SnS4 ] · 4H2 O that is based on binary tetrahedral [SnS4 ]4- anions. The formation of the respective products, novel compounds (C4 C1 C1 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 a), (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 b), and (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn4 S9 ] (2) with layered anionic substructures, or the recently reported compound (C4 C1 C1 Im)4+x [Sn10 O4 S16 (SMe)4 ][An]x (A) comprising a molecular cluster anion, is controlled by both the choice of the ionic liquid cation and the reaction temperature. We report the scale-up of the syntheses by a factor of 100 with regard to other reported ionothermal syntheses of related compounds, and a procedure of how to isolate them in phase-pure form - both being rare observations in chalcogenido stannate chemistry in ionic liquids. Moreover, the synthesis of compound 1 a can be achieved by rapid cation exchange starting out from 1 b, which has not been reported for organic cations in any chalcogenido stannate salt to date.

Abstract
To gain a deeper understanding of the TiCl4 solvation effects in multi-component ionic liquids, we performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [C4C1Im]+, tetrafluoroborate [BF4]−, chloride [Cl]− both with and without water and titanium tetrachloride TiCl4. Complex interactions between cations and anions are observed in all investigated systems. By further addition of water and TiCl4 this complex interaction network is extended. Observations of the radial distribution functions and number integrals show that water and TiCl4 not only compete with each other to interact mainly with [Cl]−, which strongly influences the cation-[BF4]− interaction, but also interact with each other, which leads to the fact that in certain systems the cation-anion interaction is enhanced. Further investigations of the Voronoi polyhedra analysis have demonstrated that water has a greater impact on the nanosegregated system than TiCl4 which is also due to the fact of the shear amount of water relative to all other components and its higher mobility compared to TiCl4. Overall, the polar network of the IL mixture collapses by including water and TiCl4. In the case of [Cl]− chloride enters the water continuum, while [BF4]− remains largely unaffected, which deeply affects the interaction of the ionic liquid (IL) network.

Abstract
Multinary chalcogenido (semi)metalate salts exhibit finely tunable optical properties based on the combination of metal and chalcogenide ions in their polyanionic substructure. Here, we present the structural expansion of chalcogenido germanate(IV) or stannate(IV) architectures with SbIII , which clearly affects the vibrational and optical absorption properties of the solid compounds. For the synthesis of the title compounds, [K4 (H2 O)4 ][Ge4 S10 ] or [K4 (H2 O)4 ][SnS4 ] were reacted with SbCl3 under ionothermal conditions in imidazolium-based ionic liquids. Salt metathesis at relatively low temperatures (120 °C or 150 °C) enabled the incorporation of (formally) Sb3+ ions into the anionic substructure of the precursors, and their modification to form (Cat)16 [Ge2 Sb2 S7 ]6 [GeS4 ] (1) and (Cat)6 [Sn10 O4 S20 ][Sb3 S4 ]2 (2 a and 2 b), wherein Cat=(C4 C1 C1 Im)+ (1 and 2 a) or (C4 C1 C2 Im)+ (2 b). In 1, germanium and antimony atoms are combined to form a rare noradamantane-type ternary molecular anion, six of which surround an {GeS4 } unit in a highly symmetric secondary structure, and finally crystallize in a diamond-like superstructure. In 2, supertetrahedral oxo-sulfido stannate clusters are generated, as known from the ionothermal treatment of the stannate precursor alone, yet, linked here into unprecedented one-dimensional strands with {Sb3 S4 } units as linkers. We discuss the single-crystal structures of these uncommon salts of ternary and quaternary chalcogenido (semi)metalate anions, as well as their Raman and UV-visible spectra.

Abstract
Optically nonlinear Pb2 B5 O9 X (X = Cl, Br) borate halides are an important group of materials for second harmonic generation (SHG). Additionally, they also possess excellent photocatalytic activity and stability in the process of dechlorination of chlorophenols, which are typical persistent organic pollutants. It would be of great interest to conduct in situ (photo-) catalysis investigations during the whole photocatalytic process by SHG when considering them as photocatalytic materials. In order to get superior photocatalytic efficiency and maximum surface information, small particles are highly desired. Here, a low-cost and fast synthesis route that allows growing microcrystalline optically nonlinear Pb2 B5 O9 X borate halides at large quantities is introduced. When applying the ionothermal growth process at temperatures between 130 and 170 °C, microcrystallites with an average size of about 1 µm precipitate with an orthorhombic hilgardite-like borate halide structure. Thorough examinations using powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, the Pb2 B5 O9 X microcrystals are indicated to be chemically pure and single-phased. Besides, the Pb2 B5 O9 X borate halides' SHG efficiencies are confirmed using confocal SHG microscopy. The low-temperature synthesis route thus makes these borate halides a highly desirable material for surface studies such as monitoring chemical reactions with picosecond time resolution and in situ (photo-) catalysis investigations.

Abstract
The title salt, (PMIM)2[Ni(P2S8)2] (PMIM = 3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium, C7H13N2 +), consists of a nickel-thio-phosphate anion charge-balanced by a pair of crystallographically independent PMIM cations. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n. The structure exhibits the known [Ni(P2S8)2]2- anion with two unique imidazolium cations in the asymmetric unit. Whereas one PMIM cation is well ordered, the other is disordered over two orientations with refined occupancies of 0.798 (2) and 0.202 (2). The salt was prepared directly from the elements in the ionic liquid [PMIM]CF3SO3. Whereas one of the PMIM cations is well behaved (it does not exhibit disorder even in the propyl side chain), the other is found in two overlapping positions. The refined occupancies for the two orientations are roughly 80:20. Here, too, there appears to be little disorder in the propyl arm.

Abstract
Thiol-amine solvent mixtures have been widely applied in the solution processing of binary chalcogenide thin films due to their excellent ability to dissolve various bulk binary chalcogenides. However, application of this solvent system in preparing new crystalline chalcogenidometalates has not been explored. In this work, by using a thiol-amine solvent mixture of n-butylamine (BA) and 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) as the reaction medium and protonated piperazine (pip) cation as the template, we synthesized a series of new chalcogenidoarsenates with structures ranging from discrete clusters to two-dimensional layers, namely, [pipH2][pipH][AsS4] (1), [pipH2][pipH][As(Se0.4S0.6)4] (2), [pipH2]2[pipH]2[In2AsIII2AsV2S13.3(S2)0.7] (3), [pipH2]2[pipH]2[In2AsIII2AsV2S10.2Se3.1(Se2)0.7] (4), [pipH2]0.5[AsS(S2)] (5), [pipH2]0.5[AsS2] (6), [pipH]2[AgAsS4] (7), [pipH2]1.5[GaAsIIIAsVS7] (8), and Cs2[pipH]2[InAs6S12]Cl (9). Particularly, compounds 3, 4, and 8 contain mixed-valent AsIII and AsV ions in their discrete clusters and one-dimensional chain. In addition, compound 5 could thermodynamically transform to compound 6 with increasing reaction temperature, which may be attributed to the thermodynamically unstable S-S species in the chains of 5. The BA-EDT solvent mixture was crucial to the synthesis of these compounds, since no title crystals can be prepared by replacing the BA-EDT solvent mixture with other conventional solvents or removing one component of the BA-EDT solvent mixture from the reaction system. Our research demonstrates that thiol-amine solvent systems could be promising reaction media for growing novel crystalline chalcogenidometalates.

Abstract
Although supertetrahedral Tn sulfide clusters (n=2-6) have been extensively explored, the synthesis of Tn selenide clusters with n>4 has not been achieved thus far. Reported here are ionic-liquid (IL)-assisted precursor route syntheses, characterizations, and the photocatalytic properties of six new M-In-Q (M=Cu or Cd; Q=Se or Se/S) chalcogenide compounds, namely [Bmmim]12 Cu5 In30 Q52 Cl3 (Im) (Q=Se (T5-1), Se48.5 S3.5 (T5-2); Bmmim=1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, Im=imidazole), [Bmmim]11 Cd6 In28 Q52 Cl3 (MIm) (Q=Se (T5-3), Se28.5 S23.5 (T5-4), Se16 S36 (T5-5); MIm=1-methylimidazole), and [Bmmim]9 Cd6 In28 Se8 S44 Cl(MIm)3 (T5-6). The cluster compounds T5-1 and T5-3 represent the largest molecular supertetrahedral Tn selenide clusters to date. Under visible-light illumination, the Cu-In-Q compounds showed photocatalytic activity towards the decomposition of crystal violet, whereas the Cd-In-Q compounds exhibited good photocatalytic H2 evolution activity. Interestingly, the experimental results show that the photocatalytic performances of the selenide/sulfide solid solutions were significantly better than those of their selenide analogues, for example, the degradation time of the organic dye with T5-2 was much shorter than that with T5-1, whereas the photocatalytic H2 evolution efficiencies with T5-3-T5-6 improved significantly with increasing sulfur content. This work highlights the significance of IL-assisted precursor route synthesis and the tuning of photocatalytic properties through the formation of solid solutions.

Abstract
This perspective summarizes highlights and most recent advances in tin cluster chemistry, thereby addressing the whole diversity of (mostly) discrete units containing tin atoms. Although being a (semi-)metallic element, tin is in the position to occur both in formally positive or negative oxidation states in these molecules, which causes a broad range of fundamentally different properties of the corresponding compounds. Tin(iv) compounds are not as oxophilic and not as prone to hydrolysis as related Si or Ge compounds, hence allowing for easier handling and potential application. Nevertheless, their reactivity is high due to an overall reduction of bond energies, which makes tin clusters interesting candidates for functional compounds. Beside aspects that point towards bioactivity or even medical applications, materials composed of naked or ligand-protected tin clusters, with or without bridging ligands, show interesting optical, and ion/molecule-trapping properties.

Abstract
Selective in situ methylation of terminal chalcogenide ligands of molecular chalcogenido metalate anions in ionothermal reactions with alkylimidazolium-based ionic liquids yields a series of organo-functionalized chalcogenido metalate compounds. We present the syntheses and crystal structures of (C4C1C1Im)4+x [Sn10S16O4(SMe)4][An] x (1a-1f), (dmmpH)6[Mn4Sn4Se13(SeMe)4] (2), and (C n C1Im)6[Hg6Te10(TeMe)2] (3a, 3b). The methylation was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, and the optical absorption properties of the methylated compounds were determined and compared to purely inorganic analogs.

Abstract
The synthesis of atom-precise analogues of homometallic nanoclusters remains a great challenge. Herein we report the first pair of atom-precise copper/silver-thiolate halide cluster analogues, namely [Cu17/Ag17I3S(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)11] (Cu17 and Ag17), obtained by bottom-up self-assembly and complete-metal-exchange-induced cluster-to-cluster transformation, respectively. The differences in optical absorption and emission of these analogues were fully elucidated by experimental and theoretical methods.

Abstract
Abstract
The use of reagents containing bonds between group 14 elements and Se or Te for the self-assembly of polynuclear metal–chalcogen compounds is covered. Background material is briefly reviewed and examples from the literature are highlighted from the period 2007–2017. Emphasis is placed on the different classes of 14–16 precursors and their application in the targeted synthesis of metal–chalcogen compounds. The unique properties arising from the combination of specific 14–16 precursors, metal atoms, and ancillary ligands are also described. Selected examples are chosen to underline the progress in (i) controlled synthesis of heterometallic (ternary) chalcogen clusters, (ii) chalcogen clusters with organic functionalized surfaces, and (iii) crystalline open-framework metal chalcogenides.
