An Atomically Precise Pyrazolate-Protected Copper Nanocluster Exhibiting Exceptional Stability and Catalytic Activity

[Cu58(SeC6H5)24(Dppe)6Se16]2+ assembled from tetrahedra and octahedra: synthesis, characterization, structure and catalytic properties

Herein, we successfully synthesized a copper nanocluster, [Cu58(SeC6H5)24(Dppe)6Se16]2+. The Cu58 features a tetrahedral Cu4 core, surrounded by tetrahedral Se4 and octahedral Cu6 subunits, and further stabilized by Cu3Se3, Cu3(SeR)3, and DppeCu2 staples, which can be interpreted as an assembly of tetrahedral and octahedral units. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the electronic structure of Cu58. This nanocluster demonstrates excellent catalytic properties in copper-catalyzed [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. Additionally, Cu58 enriches the structural diversity of copper-based nanoclusters, providing valuable insights for future structural predictions.

Luminescent Hydride-Free [Cu7(SC5H9)7(PPh3)3] Nanocluster: Facilitating Highly Selective C-C Bond Formation

Amidst burgeoning interest, atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have emerged as a remarkable class of nanomaterials distinguished by their unparalleled reactivity. Nonetheless, the synthesis of hydride-free Cu NCs and their role as stable catalysts remain infrequently explored. Here, we introduce a facile synthetic approach to fabricate a hydride-free [Cu7(SC5H9)7(PPh3)3] (Cu7) NC and delineate its photophysical properties intertwined with their structural configuration. Moreover, the utilization of its photophysical properties in a photoinduced C-C coupling reaction demonstrates remarkable specificity toward cross-coupling products with high yields. The combined experimental and theoretical investigation reveals a nonradical mechanistic pathway distinct from its counterparts, offering promising prospects for designing hydride-free Cu NC catalysts in the future and unveiling the selectivity of the hydride-free [Cu7(SC5H9)7(PPh3)3] NC in photoinduced Sonogashira C-C coupling through a polar reaction pathway.

Polyoxometalate Functionalized Cyclic Trinuclear Copper Compounds for Bifunctional Electrochemical Detection and Photocatalytic Reduction of Cr(VI)

The design and intentional construction of crystalline materials containing two clusters with redox properties in one framework still remains challenging. Linking oxidative polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and a reductive cyclic trinuclear copper complex (Cu-CTC) to prepare stable catalysts is rarely reported. Herein, we successfully obtained two new polyoxometalate-based metal-organic compounds (POMOCs) [CuII3(PyCA)3(μ3-OH)(β-Mo8O26)0.5(H2O)2]·5H2O (1), [CuII3(PyCA)3(μ3-OH)]2(CuIIW12O40)[CuII(H2O)6] (2) (PyCA = 1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde) by enabling precursors of Cu-CTC and POM cocrystallization in one pot via hydrothermal method. The [β-Mo8O26]4- cluster in compound 1 combined with Cu-CTC units to form a 1D structure, and the [CuW12O40]6- unit in compound 2 linked two Cu-CTC units to form a sandwich-like 0D structure. Also, Cu-CTC CuI3(PyCA)3·H2O (Cu3) was synthesized for performance comparison. A series of characterizations indicate that compound 1 is more conducive to electron transfer than compound 2. In addition, compounds 1 and 2 can act as bifunctional catalysts for the electrochemical detection and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Particularly, the photoreduction rates of Cr(VI) by compounds 1 and 2 are 96.7% and 96.3% for only 10 and 14 min under visible light, respectively, and it is better than that of Cu3 and most other reported photocatalysts. Furthermore, the active sites and mechanisms for electrochemical detection and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) were discussed.

NIR-II emissive anionic copper nanoclusters with intrinsic photoredox activity in single-electron transfer

Ultrasmall copper nanoclusters have recently emerged as promising photocatalysts for organic synthesis, owing to their exceptional light absorption ability and large surface areas for efficient interactions with substrates. Despite significant advances in cluster-based visible-light photocatalysis, the types of organic transformations that copper nanoclusters can catalyze remain limited to date. Herein, we report a structurally well-defined anionic Cu40 nanocluster that emits in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) after photoexcitation and can conduct single-electron transfer with fluoroalkyl iodides without the need for external ligand activation. This photoredox-active copper nanocluster efficiently catalyzes the three-component radical couplings of alkenes, fluoroalkyl iodides, and trimethylsilyl cyanide under blue-LED irradiation at room temperature. A variety of fluorine-containing electrophiles and a cyanide nucleophile can be added onto an array of alkenes, including styrenes and aliphatic olefins. Our current work demonstrates the viability of using readily accessible metal nanoclusters to establish photocatalytic systems with a high degree of practicality and reaction complexity.

Eight-Electron Copper Nanoclusters for Photothermal Conversion

Owing to distinct physicochemical properties in comparison to gold and silver counterparts, atomically precise copper nanoclusters are attracting embryonic interest in material science. The introduction of copper cluster nanomaterials in more interesting fields is currently urgent and desired. Reported in this work are novel copper nanoclusters of [XCu54Cl12(tBuS)20(NO3)12] (X=S or none, tBuSH=2-methyl-2-propanethiol), which exhibit high performance in photothermal conversion. The clusters have been prepared in one pot and characterized by combinatorial techniques including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The molecular structure of the clusters, as revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SCXRD), shows the concentric three-shell Russian doll arrangement of X@Cu14@Cl12@Cu40. Interestingly, the [SCu54Cl12(tBuS)20(NO3)12] cluster contains 8 free valence electrons in its structure, making it the first eight-electron copper nanocluster stabilized by thiolates. More impressively, the clusters possess an effective photothermal conversion (temperature increases by 71 °C within ~50 s, λex=445 nm, 0.5 W cm-2) in a wide wavelength range (either blue or near-infrared). The photothermal conversion can be even driven under irradiation of simulated sunlight (3 sun), endowing the clusters with great potency in solar energy utilization.

Stepwise structural evolution toward robust carboranealkynyl-protected copper nanocluster catalysts for nitrate electroreduction

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as idealized model catalysts for imprecise metal nanoparticles to unveil their structure-activity relationship. However, the directional synthesis of robust metal NCs with accessible catalytic active sites remains a great challenge. In this work, we achieved bulky carboranealkynyl-protected copper NCs, the monomer Cu13·3PF6 and nido-carboranealkynyl bridged dimer Cu26·4PF6, with fair stability as well as accessible open metal sites step by step through external ligand shell modification and metal-core evolution. Both Cu13·3PF6 and Cu26·4PF6 demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity in electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction to NH3 reaction, with the dimer Cu26·4PF6 displaying superior performance. The mechanism of this catalytic reaction was elucidated through theoretical computations in conjunction with in situ FTIR spectra. This study not only provides strategies for accessing desired copper NC catalysts but also establishes a platform to uncover the structure-activity relationship of copper NCs.

A thiolated copper-hydride nanocluster with chloride bridging as a catalyst for carbonylative C-N coupling of aryl amines under mild conditions: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs), an emerging class of nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention owing to their versatile core-shell architecture and their potential applications in catalytic reactions. In this study, we present a straightforward synthesis strategy for [Cu29(StBu)12(PPh3)4Cl6H10][BF4] (Cu29) NCs and explore their catalytic activity in the carbonylative C-N coupling reaction involving aromatic amines and N-heteroarenes with dialkyl azodicarboxylates. Through a combination of experimental investigations and density functional theory studies, we elucidate the radical mechanisms at play. The crucial step in the catalytic process is identified as the decomposition of diisopropyl azodicarboxylates on the surface of Cu29 NCs, leading to the generation of oxyacyl radicals and the liberation of nitrogen gas. Subsequently, an oxyacyl radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from aniline, initiating the formation of an aminyl radical. Finally, the aminyl radical reacts with another oxyacyl radical, culminating in the synthesis of the desired carbamate product. This detailed analysis provides insights into the intricate catalytic pathways of Cu29 NCs, shedding light on their potential for catalyzing carbonylative C-N coupling reactions.

Supramolecular Anchored Copper Nanoclusters for a Multipath Electrochemiluminescence Probe

Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) are highly promising nanomaterials in the field of electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Nevertheless, their limited stability and efficiency have impeded their practical applications. Here, we introduced a novel supramolecular anchoring strategy resulting in the creation of exceptionally stable Cu NCs (CET-Cu NCs) with remarkable ECL properties. Specifically, CET-Cu NCs exhibited a relative ECL efficiency (ΦECL) of 62% based on the annihilation ECL efficiency of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (100%), with tripropylamine employed as a coreactant. Moreover, CET-Cu NCs can generate ECL emission through multiple different paths, which enables them to serve as signal probes in a wider range of testing scenarios, thereby enhancing the reliability and robustness of sensing and analytical systems. To demonstrate the practical utility, CET-Cu NCs were selected as an ECL signal probe for a sensing platform that facilitated ultrasensitive detection of progesterone via oriented immobilization technology and antibody/aptamer sandwich assays. This study surmounted the barriers to the practical application of Cu NCs through the implementation of a supramolecular anchoring strategy, thereby providing enhanced utility of Cu NCs in ECL sensing and analysis.

A Highly NIR Emissive Cu16 Pd1 Nanocluster

The construction of stable copper nanoclusters (Cu-NCs) with near-infrared (NIR) emission that can be used for catalysis is highly desired, yet remains a challenge. Herein, an atomically precise bimetallic Cu/Pd NC with a molecular formula of Cu16 Pd1 L10 (PPh3 )2 (Pz)6 (Pz = 3,5-(CF3 )2 Pyrazolate, L = 4-CH3 OPhC≡C- ), abbreviated as Cu16 Pd1 , is synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis of Cu16 Pd1 reveals a Cu10 Pd1 kernel with pseudo-gyroelongated square bipyramid confirmation surrounded by other 6 Cu(I) ions and protected ligands. Interestingly, it exhibits strong NIR emission with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) among all the Cu NCs/Cu alloys (λem  > 800 nm) in the solid-state, and also displays NIR emission in solution. Experimental results and theoretical calculations suggest that the impressive NIR emission is attributed to abundant supramolecular interactions in the solid-state, including intramolecular metal-metal and intermolecular interactions. Of note, the bimetallic Cu16 Pd1 can catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. This work provides a novel method for synthesizing Cu/Pd NCs and reminds that the less studied Cu/Pd NC can serve as outstanding luminescent material, which is seldom noticed in atomically precise nanoclusters.

Atomically precise ultrasmall copper cluster for room-temperature highly regioselective dehydrogenative coupling

Three-component dehydrogenative coupling reactions represent important and practical methodologies for forging new C-N bonds and C-C bonds. Achieving highly all-in-one dehydrogenative coupling functionalization by a single catalytic system remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop a rigid-flexible-coupled copper cluster [Cu3(NHC)3(PF6)3] (Cu3NC(NHC)) using a tridentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligand. The shell ligand endows Cu3NC(NHC) with dual attributes, including rigidity and flexibility, to improve activity and stability. The Cu3NC(NHC) is applied to catalyze both highly all-in-one dehydrogenative coupling transformations. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory illustrate that the improved regioselectivity is derived from the low energy of ion pair with copper acetylide and endo-iminium ions and the low transition state, which originates from the unique physicochemical properties of the Cu3NC(NHC) catalyst. This work highlights the importance of N-heterocyclic carbene in the modification of copper clusters, providing a new design rule to protect cluster catalytic centers and enhance catalysis.

Advances in Cu nanocluster catalyst design: recent progress and promising applications

The quest for cleaner pathways to the production of fuels and chemicals from non-fossil feedstock, efficient transformation of raw materials to value-added chemicals under mild conditions, and control over the activity and selectivity of chemical processes are driving the state-of-the-art approaches to the construction and precise chemical modification of sustainable nanocatalysts. As a burgeoning category of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters, copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) benefitting from their exclusive structural architecture, ingenious designability of active sites and high surface-to-volume ratio qualify as potential rationally-designed catalysts. In this Minireview, we present a detailed coverage of the optimal design strategies and controlled synthesis of Cu NC catalysts with a focus on tuning of active sites at the atomic level, the implications of cluster size, shape and structure, the ligands and heteroatom doping on catalytic activity, and reaction scope ranging from chemical catalysis to emerging photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Stepwise construction of Ag29 nanocluster-based hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts

Although several silver-based nanoclusters have been controllably prepared and structurally determined, their electrochemical catalytic performances have been relatively unexplored (or showed relatively weak ability towards electro-catalysis). In this work, we accomplished the step-by-step enhancement of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency based on an Ag29 cluster template. A combination of atomically precise operations, including the kernel alloying, ligand engineering, and surface activation, was exploited to produce a highly efficient Pt1Ag28-BTT-Mn(10) nano-catalyst towards HER, derived from both experimental characterization and theoretical modelling. The precision characteristic of the Ag29-based cluster system enables us to understanding the correlations between nanocluster structures and HER performances at the atomic level. Overall, the findings of this work will hopefully provide more opportunities for the customization of new cluster-based nano-catalysts with enhanced electrocatalytic capacities.

Constructing Ultrastable Metallo-Cages via In Situ Deprotonation/Oxidation of Dynamic Supramolecular Assemblies

Coordination-driven self-assembly enables the spontaneous construction of metallo-supramolecules with high precision, facilitated by dynamic and reversible metal-ligand interactions. The dynamic nature of coordination, however, results in structural lability in many metallo-supramolecular assembly systems. Consequently, it remains a formidable challenge to achieve self-assembly reversibility and structural stability simultaneously in metallo-supramolecular systems. To tackle this issue, herein, we incorporate an acid-/base-responsive tridentate ligand into multitopic building blocks to precisely construct a series of metallo-supramolecular cages through coordination-driven self-assembly. These dynamic cagelike assemblies can be transformed to their static states through mild in situ deprotonation/oxidation, leading to ultrastable skeletons that can withstand high temperatures, metal ion chelators, and strong acid/base conditions. This in situ transformation provides a reliable and powerful approach to manipulate the kinetic features and stability of metallo-supramolecules and allows for modulation of encapsulation and release behaviors of metallo-cages when utilizing nanoscale quantum dots (QDs) as guest molecules.
