Efficient and Direct Functionalization of Allylic sp3 C-H Bonds with Concomitant CO2 Reduction

Full-spectrum plasmonic semiconductors for photocatalysis

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of noble metal nanoparticles can focus surrounding light onto the particle surface to boost photochemical reactions and solar energy utilization. However, the rarity and high cost of noble metals limit their applications in plasmonic photocatalysis, forcing researchers to seek low-cost alternatives. Recently, some heavily doped semiconductors with high free carrier density have garnered attention due to their metal-like LSPR properties. However, plasmonic semiconductors have complex surface structures characterized by the presence of a depletion layer, which poses challenges for active site exposure and hot carrier transfer, resulting in low photocatalytic activity. In this review, we introduce the essential characteristics and types, synthesis methods, and characterization techniques of full-spectrum plasmonic semiconductors, elucidate the mechanism of full-spectrum nonmetallic plasmonic photocatalysis, including the local electromagnetic field, hot carrier generation and transfer, the photothermal effect, and the solutions for the surface depletion layer, and summarize the applications of plasmonic semiconductors in photocatalytic environmental remediation, CO2 reduction, H2 generation, and organic transformations. Finally, we provide a perspective on full-spectrum plasmonic photocatalysis, aiming to guide the design and development of plasmonic photocatalysts.

Photocarrier tunneling triggering CO2 photocatalysis

Solar CO2 reduction to renewable hydrocarbon fuels offers a promising pathway to carbon neutrality, but it is retarded by tough CO2 activation, complicated mechanisms, sluggish charge transport kinetics, and a scarcity of strategies for precise tuning of charge transport pathways. Herein, we first conceptually design a novel insulating polymer-mediated electron-tunneling artificial photosystem via progressive interface configuration regulation, wherein tailor-made Ag@citrate nanocrystals (NCs) are controllably self-assembled on transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) assisted by an ultrathin insulating polymer interim layer, i.e., poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). In this multilayered nano-architecture, a solid ultra-thin insulating PAH interim layer serves as an unexpected charge tunneling mediator to stimulate smooth electron transfer from the TMC substrate to the terminal electron reservoirs of Ag@citrate NCs, engendering the tandem charge transfer route and significantly boosting the visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2-to-syngas conversion performances. Furthermore, we have ascertained that such TMC-insulating polymer-metal NC tunneling photosystems are universal. This study would spark new inspiration for unleashing the long-term neglected charge tunneling capability of insulating polymers and diversifying non-conjugated polymer-based artificial photosystems for solar-to-fuel energy conversion.

Accelerating Charge Kinetics in Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Modulating the Cobalt Coordination in Heterostructures of Cadmium Sulfide/Metal-Organic Layer

Artificial photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2R) holds great promise to directly store solar energy into chemical bonds. The slow charge and mass transfer kinetics at the triphasic solid-liquid-gas interface calls for the rational design of heterogeneous photocatalysts concertedly boosting interfacial charge transfer, local CO2 concentration, and exposure of active sites. To meet these requirements, in this study heterostructures of CdS/MOL (MOL = metal-organic layer) furnishing different redox Co sites are fabricated for CO2R photocatalysts. It is found that the coordination environment of Co is key to photocatalytic activity. The best catalyst ensemble comprising ligand-chelated Co2+ with the bipyridine electron mediator demonstrates a high CO yield rate of 1523 µmol h-1 gcat -1, selectivity of 95.8% and TON of 1462.4, which are ranked among the best seen in literature. Comprehensive photochemical and electroanalytical characterizations attribute the high CO2R performance to the improved photocarrier separation and charge kinetics originated from the proper energy band alignment and coordination chemistry. This work highlights the construction of 2D heterostructures and modulation of transition metal coordination to expedite the charge kinetics in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Efficient Thermal Management with Selective Metamaterial Absorber for Boosting Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation under Sunlight

Photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is a prospective strategy to simultaneously reduce CO2 emission and generate value-added fuels. However, the demand of extremely intense light hinders its development in practical applications. Herein, this work reports the novel design of Ni-based selective metamaterial absorber and employs it as the photothermal catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation. The selective absorption property reduces the heat loss caused by radiation while possessing effectively solar absorption, thus substantially increasing local photothermal temperature. Notably, the enhancement of local electric field by plasmon resonance promotes the adsorption and activation of reactants. Moreover, benefiting from the ingenious morphology that Ni nanoparticles (NPs) are encapsulated by SiO2 matrix through co-sputtering, the greatly improved dispersion of Ni NPs enables enhancing the contact with reaction gas and preventing the agglomeration. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits an unprecedented CO2 conversion rate of 516.9 mmol gcat -1 h-1 under 0.8 W cm-2 irradiation, with near 90% CO selectivity and high stability. Significantly, this designed photothermal catalyst demonstrates the great potential in practical applications under sunlight. This work provides new sights for designing high-performance photothermal catalysts by thermal management.

Understanding the Behaviors of Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Their Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

Promoting the efficiency and selectivity of NO3--to-NH3 reduction on Cu-O-Ti active sites via preferential glycol oxidation with holes

The combined reductive and oxidative reaction is the essence of a solar-driven photoredox system. Unfortunately, most of these efforts focus on the specific half-reactions, and the key roles of complete photoredox reactions have been overlooked. Taking the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) as a typical multiple-electrons involved process, the selective reduction of the NO3- into ammonia (NH3) synthesis with high efficiency is still a grand challenge. Herein, a rational oxidative half-reaction is tailored to achieve the selective conversion of NO3- to NH3 on Cu-O-Ti active sites. Through the coupled NO3-RR with glycol oxidation reaction system, a superior NH3 photosynthesis rate of 16.04 ± 0.40 mmol gcat-1 h-1 with NO3- conversion ratio of 100% and almost 100% of NH3 selectivity is reached on Cu-O-Ti bimetallic oxide cluster-anchored TiO2 nanosheets (CuOx@TNS) catalyst. A combination of comprehensive in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveals the molecular mechanism of the synergistic interaction between NO3-RR and glycol oxidation pair on CuOx@TNS. The introduction of glycol accelerates the h+ consumption for the formation of alkoxy (•R) radicals to avoid the production of •OH radicals. The construction of Cu-O-Ti sites facilitates the preferential oxidation of glycol with h+ and enhances the production of e- to participate in NO3-RR. The efficiency and selectivity of NO3--to-NH3 synthesis are thus highly promoted on Cu-O-Ti active sites with the accelerated glycol oxidative half-reaction. This work upgrades the conventional half photocatalysis into a complete photoredox system, demonstrating the tremendous potential for the precise regulation of reaction pathway and product selectivity.

Non-Interacting Ni and Fe Dual-Atom Pair Sites in N-Doped Carbon Catalysts for Efficient Concentrating Solar-Driven Photothermal CO2 Reduction

Solar-to-chemical energy conversion under weak solar irradiation is generally difficult to meet the heat demand of CO2 reduction. Herein, a new concentrated solar-driven photothermal system coupling a dual-metal single-atom catalyst (DSAC) with adjacent Ni-N4 and Fe-N4 pair sites is designed for boosting gas-solid CO2 reduction with H2 O under simulated solar irradiation, even under ambient sunlight. As expected, the (Ni, Fe)-N-C DSAC exhibits a superior photothermal catalytic performance for CO2 reduction to CO (86.16 μmol g-1  h-1 ), CH4 (135.35 μmol g-1  h-1 ) and CH3 OH (59.81 μmol g-1  h-1 ), which are equivalent to 1.70-fold, 1.27-fold and 1.23-fold higher than those of the Fe-N-C catalyst, respectively. Based on theoretical simulations, the Fermi level and d-band center of Fe atom is efficiently regulated in non-interacting Ni and Fe dual-atom pair sites with electronic interaction through electron orbital hybridization on (Ni, Fe)-N-C DSAC. Crucially, the distance between adjacent Ni and Fe atoms of the Ni-N-N-Fe configuration means that the additional Ni atom as a new active site contributes to the main *COOH and *HCO3 dissociation to optimize the corresponding energy barriers in the reaction process, leading to specific dual reaction pathways (COOH and HCO3 pathways) for solar-driven photothermal CO2 reduction to initial CO production.

Hybrid CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dot-Gold Nanoparticle Composites Assembled by Click Chemistry: Toward Affordable and Efficient Redox Photocatalysts Working with Visible Light

A new modular, easy-to-synthesize photocatalyst was prepared by assembling colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) via their ligands thanks to copper-catalyzed azide to alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click chemistry. The resulting composite (QD-AuNP) photocatalyst was tested with a benchmark photoredox system previously reported by our group, for which QD alone acted as a photocatalyst but with a modest quantum yield (QY = 0.06%) and turnover number (TON = 350 in 3 h) due to poor charge separation. After optimization, the QD-AuNP composites exhibited much improved photocatalytic performances: up to five times higher TON (2600 in 3 h) and up to 24 times faster reaction in the first 10 min of visible irradiation. Such an improvement is attributed to an efficient electron transfer from QD to AuNP in the photoexcited QD-AuNP composites, which ensures a much better charge separation than that in QD alone. This was confirmed by studying both (i) the quenching of the QD photoluminescence during the synthesis of the QD-AuNP composites and (ii) the blue shift of the AuNP plasmon absorption band due to the accumulation of up to 7400 electrons per AuNP in QD-AuNP composites under visible light irradiation in the presence of electron donors.
