Synthesis and catalytic study of open metal site metal-organic frameworks of Cu3(BTC)2microbelts in selective organic sulfide oxidation

Reusable Magnetite Nanoparticle (Fe3O4 NP) Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols under Microwave Irradiation

Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are nontoxic and abundant materials which have long been investigated as reusable catalysts in oxidation reactions, but their use so far has been hampered by a low selectivity. Here, unsupported iron oxide NPs have been found to successfully catalyze the microwave-assisted oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to their respective aldehydes and ketones with a high selectivity when N-methylmorpholine N-oxide was used as the terminal oxidant. The crystalline phase and size of the iron-based catalyst have a drastic effect on its activity, with small magnetite (Fe3O4) NPs being the optimal catalyst for this reaction. The nanocatalyst could be easily recovered by magnetoseparation and successfully recycled four times without any need for special pretreatment or reactivation step and with a minimal loss of activity. The subsequent loss of activity was attributed to the transition from magnetite (Fe3O4) to maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), as confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. The nanocatalyst could then be reactivated by the high-temperature microwave treatment and used again for the microwave-assisted oxidation reaction.

Modified air-Fenton with MIL-88A for chemical oxygen demand treatment in used coolant oil

Coolant oil from auto part manufacturing contains additives resulting in high chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater. In this study, COD treatment of coolant oil was investigated in a metal-organic framework (MOF) with MIL-88A by a modified air-Fenton (MAF) process by varying synthetic coolant oil concentrations (1-5%), pH (3-9), air-flow rate (1-2 L/min), amount of MIL-88A (0.2-1.0 g), and reaction time (30-180 min). The results were analyzed using central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) using Minitab ver. 19. The characteristic MIL-88A was characterized by XRD that showed a spindle-like shape with 2θ at 10.2° and 13.0°. The FTIR spectrum revealed the vibrational frequencies at Fe-O (564 cm-1), C-O (1391 and 1600 cm-1), and C = O (1216 and 1710 cm-1). The optimum treatment efficiency was studied from 30 CCD conditions in the presence of coolant oil (5%, COD ~ 132,000 mg/L), pH (9), air flow rate (2 L/min), and MIL-88A (1 g) within 177 min. The results obtained from the experiment and the COD prediction were found to be 92.64% and 93.45%, respectively. The main mechanism of iron(III) in MIL-88A is proposed to be the production of hydroxyl radical (·OH) that oxidizes the organic matter in the coolant oil. Moreover, the MAF process was applied to the used industrial coolant oil and was found to be 62.59% efficient.

Epoxidation of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters with Hydrogen Peroxide Catalyzed by Peroxopolyoxotungstate PW4 Encapsulated in the MIL-100(Cr) Framework

The MIL-100(Cr), PW12@MIL-100(Cr) and PW4@MIL-100(Cr) catalysts were prepared and characterized through XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, EDS and Raman spectroscopy. A comparison of the catalytic properties of the synthesized materials in the epoxidation of FAMEs with hydrogen peroxide was made. The PW4@MIL-100(Cr) catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity and provided a high selectivity for the formation of epoxides. The effects of the reaction temperature, catalyst loading, reaction time and FAME:hydrogen peroxide molar ratio on the reaction performance were investigated, and the optimal process conditions were determined. An epoxide yield of 73% with a selectivity of 77% could be obtained using PW4@MIL-100(Cr) after 4 h at 40 °C. The catalytic stability test showed that PW4@MIL-100(Cr) could be easily separated and reused without any treatment for at least five consecutive cycles without a loss of activity or selectivity.

Magnetite Metal-Organic Frameworks: Applications in Environmental Remediation of Heavy Metals, Organic Contaminants, and Other Pollutants

Due to the increasing environmental pollution caused by human activities, environmental remediation has become an important subject for humans and environmental safety. The quest for beneficial pathways to remove organic and inorganic contaminants has been the theme of considerable investigations in the past decade. The easy and quick separation made magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) a popular method for the removal of different pollutants from the environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials best known for their ultrahigh porosity. Moreover, these materials can be easily modified with useful ligands and form various composites with varying characteristics, thus rendering them an ideal candidate as adsorbing agents for MSPE. Herein, research on MSPE, encompassing MOFs as sorbents and Fe₃O₄ as a magnetic component, is surveyed for environmental applications. Initially, assorted pollutants and their threats to human and environmental safety are introduced with a brief introduction to MOFs and MSPE. Subsequently, the deployment of magnetic MOFs (MMOFs) as sorbents for the removal of various organic and inorganic pollutants from the environment is deliberated, encompassing the outlooks and perspectives of this field.

Coordinatively unsaturated metal sites (open metal sites) in metal–organic frameworks: design and applications

The defined synthesis of OMS in MOFs is the basis for targeted functionalization through grafting, the coordination of weakly binding species and increased (supramolecular) interactions with guest molecules.

Metal-Bonded Redox-Active Triarylamines and Their Interactions: Synthesis, Structure, and Redox Properties of Paddle-Wheel Copper Complexes

Four new triphenylamine ligands with different substituents in the para position and their corresponding copper(II) complexes are reported. This study includes their structural, spectroscopic, magnetic, and electrochemical properties. The complexes possess a dinuclear copper(II) paddle-wheel core, a building unit that is also common in metal-organic frameworks. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the triphenylamine ligands and the corresponding complexes are susceptible to oxidation, resulting in the formation of stable radical cations. The square-wave voltammograms observed for the complexes are similar to those of the ligands, except for a slight shift in potential. Square-wave voltammetry data show that, in the complexes, these oxidations can be described as individual one-electron processes centered on the coordinated ligands. Spectroelectrochemistry reveals that, during the oxidation of the complexes, no difference can be detected for the spectra of successively oxidized species. For the absorption bands of the oxidized species of the ligands and complexes, only a slight shift is observed. ESR spectra for the chemically oxidized complexes indicate ligand-centered radicals. The copper ions of the paddle-wheel core are strongly antiferromagnetic coupled. DFT calculations for the fully oxidized complexes indicate a very weak ferromagnetic coupling between the copper ions and the ligand radicals, whereas a very weak antiferromagnetic coupling is found among the ligand radicals.

Hybrid Polymer/Metal-Organic Framework Films for Colorimetric Water Sensing over a Wide Concentration Range

Because of their extraordinary surface areas and tailorable porosity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the potential to be excellent sensors of gas-phase analytes. MOFs with open metal sites are particularly attractive for detecting Lewis basic atmospheric analytes, such as water. Here, we demonstrate that thin films of the MOF HKUST-1 can be used to quantitatively determine the relative humidity (RH) of air using a colorimetric approach. HKUST-1 thin films are spin-coated onto rigid or flexible substrates and are shown to quantitatively determine the RH within the range of 0.1-5% RH by either visual observation or a straightforward optical reflectivity measurement. At high humidity (>10% RH), a polymer/MOF bilayer is used to slow the transport of H₂O to the MOF film, enabling quantitative determination of RH using time as the distinguishing metric. Finally, the sensor is combined with an inexpensive light-emitting diode light source and Si photodiode detector to demonstrate a quantitative humidity detector for low humidity environments.

Post-synthetically modified SBA-15 with NH2-coordinately immobilized iron-oxine: SBA-15/NH2-FeQ3 as a Fenton-like hybrid catalyst for the selective oxidation of organic sulfides

We herein report the synthesis and catalysis of SBA-15 grafted iron-oxine. SBA-15/NH₂-FeQ₃ showed efficient catalytic activity in sulfide oxidation.

Synthesis of Hierarchically Structured Hybrid Materials by Controlled Self-Assembly of Metal-Organic Framework with Mesoporous Silica for CO2 Adsorption

The HKUST-1@SBA-15 composites with hierarchical pore structure were constructed by in situ self-assembly of metal-organic framework (MOF) with mesoporous silica. The structure directing role of SBA-15 had an obvious impact on the growth of MOF crystals, which in turn affected the morphologies and structural properties of the composites. The pristine HKUST-1 and the composites with different content of SBA-15 were characterized by XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, TG, XPS, and CO₂-TPD techniques. It was found that the composites were assembled by oriented growth of MOF nanocrystals on the surfaces of SBA-15 matrix. The interactions between surface silanol groups and metal centers induced structural changes and resulted in the increases in surface areas as well as micropore volumes of hybrid materials. Besides, the additional constraints from SBA-15 also restrained the expansion of HKUST-1, contributing to their smaller crystal sizes in the composites. The adsorption isotherms of CO₂ on the materials were measured and applied to calculate the isosteric heats of adsorption. The HS-1 composite exhibited an increase of 15.9% in CO₂ uptake capacity compared with that of HKUST-1. Moreover, its higher isosteric heats of CO₂ adsorption indicated the stronger interactions between the surfaces and CO₂ molecules. The adsorption rate of the composite was also improved due to the introduction of mesopores. Ten cycles of CO₂ adsorption-desorption experiments implied that the HS-1 had excellent reversibility of CO₂ adsorption. This study was intended to provide the possibility of assembling new composites with tailored properties based on MOF and mesoporous silica to satisfy the requirements of various applications.
