Insights into organic loading rates of anaerobic digestion for biogas production: a review

Anaerobic digestion (AD) for biogas production is affected by many factors that includes organic loading rate (OLR). This OLR appears to be closely linked to various other factors and understanding these linkages would therefore allow the sole use of OLR for process performance monitoring, control, as well as reactor design. This review's objective is to collate the various AD factor specific studies, then relate these factors' role in OLR fluctuations. By further analyzing the influence of OLR on the AD performance, it would then be possible, once all the other factors have been determined and fixed, to manage an AD plant by monitoring and controlling OLR only. Decisions on reactor design, process kinetics, biogas yield and process stability can then be made much more quickly and with minimal troubleshooting steps.

Effects of temperature and hydraulic residence time (HRT) on treatment of dilute wastewater in a carrier anaerobic baffled reactor

OBJECTIVE

To examine the effect of hydraulic residence time (HRT) on the performance and stability, to treat dilute wastewater at different operational temperatures in a carrier anaerobic baffled reactor (CABR), and hence to gain a deeper insight into microbial responses to hydraulic shocks on the base of the relationships among macroscopic performance, catabolic intermediate, and microcosmic alternation.

METHODS

COD, VFAs, and microbial activity were detected with constant feed strength (300 mg/L) at different HRTs (9-18 h) and temperatures (10 degrees C-28 degrees C) in a CABR.

RESULTS

The removal efficiencies declined with the decreases of HRTs and temperatures. However, the COD removal load was still higher at short HRT than at long HRT. Devastating reactor performance happened at temperature of 10 degrees C and at HRT of 9 h. HRTs had effect on the VFAs in the reactor slightly both at high and low temperatures, but the reasons differed from each other. Microbial activity was sensitive to indicate changes of environmental and operational parameters in the reactor.

CONCLUSION

The CABR offers to certain extent an application to treat dilute wastewater under a hydraulic-shock at temperatures from 10 degrees C to 28 degrees C.

A kinetic study of anaerobic digestion of olive mill wastewater at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures

The kinetics of the anaerobic digestion of olive mill wastewater (OMW) was studied in the mesophilic and thermophilic ranges of temperature. Two completely mixed continuous flow bioreactors operating at 35 degrees C and 55 degrees C and with an average biomass concentration of 5.45 g VSS litre(-1) were used. The thermophilic reactor worked satisfactorily between hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 10 to 40 days, removing between 94.6 and 84.4% of the initial chemical oxygen demand (COD). In contrast, the mesophilic reactor showed a marked decrease in substrate utilization and methane production at a HRT of 10 days. TVFA levels and the TVFA/alkalinity ratio were higher and close to the suggested limits for digester failure. The yield coefficient for methane production (1 CH(4) STP g(-1) COD(added)) was 28% higher in the thermophilic process than in the mesophilic one. Macroenergetic parameters, calculated using Guiot's kinetic model, gave yield coefficients for the biomass (Y) of 0.18 (mesophilic) and 0.06 g VSS g(-1) COD (thermophilic) and specific rates of substrate uptake for cell maintenance (m) of 0.12 (mesophilic) and 0.27 g COD g(-1) VSS.day(-1) (thermophilic). The experimental results showed the rate of substrate uptake (R(s); g COD g(-1) VSS.day(-1)), correlated with the concentration of biodegradable substrate (S(b); g COD litre(-1)), through an equation of the Michaelis-Menten type for the two temperatures used.
