The Influencing Factors and Mechanism of Anionic and Zwitterionic Surfactant on Viscosity Reduction in Heavy O/W Emulsions

The high viscosity of heavy crude oil has been an obstacle to its safe production and economic transportation. In this work, a screened emulsified viscosity reducer system is conducted. Experimental results demonstrate that the most effective viscosity reducing agent comprises sodium oleate (NaOl) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAB-35) in a ratio of 1:2, achieving a viscosity reduction rate of 94.65%. Additionally, the interfacial tension between oil and water decreases from 27 to 4 mN/m with 0.1 mass % TEOA and NaOH in a 1:1 ratio. The oil droplet size is uniformly distributed with D mean is 14 μm and D 50 is 11 μm. Droplets flocculate as the salinity increases to 0.2 mol/L, which corresponds to the apparent increase of viscosity. The adsorption of long alkyl chain lipophilic groups on surfactant molecules at the oil-water interface and the water film alters the wettability of pipe steel to water-wet, further enhancing the application of emulsification and viscosity reduction effects. The primary mechanism behind the viscosity reduction in emulsification is attributed to strong electrostatic interactions stemming from molecular electrostatic potential distributions.

Overview of Liquid Crystal Biosensors: From Basic Theory to Advanced Applications

Liquid crystals (LCs), as the remarkable optical materials possessing stimuli-responsive property and optical modulation property simultaneously, have been utilized to fabricate a wide variety of optical devices. Integrating the LCs and receptors together, LC biosensors aimed at detecting various biomolecules have been extensively explored. Compared with the traditional biosensing technologies, the LC biosensors are simple, visualized, and efficient. Owning to the irreplaceable superiorities, the research enthusiasm for the LC biosensors is rapidly rising. As a result, it is necessary to overview the development of the LC biosensors to guide future work. This article reviews the basic theory and advanced applications of LC biosensors. We first discuss different mesophases and geometries employed to fabricate LC biosensors, after which we introduce various detecting mechanisms involved in biomolecular detection. We then focus on diverse detection targets such as proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, glucose, cholesterol, bile acids, and lipopolysaccharides. For each of these targets, the development history and state-of-the-art work are exhibited in detail. Finally, the current challenges and potential development directions of the LC biosensors are introduced briefly.

New insights into the mechanisms of ultrasonic emulsification in the oil-water system and the role of gas bubbles

Ultrasonic emulsification (USE) assisted by cavitation is an effective method to produce emulsion droplets. However, the role of gas bubbles in the USE process still remains unclear. Hence, in the present paper, high-speed camera observations of bubble evolution and emulsion droplets formation in oil and water were used to capture in real-time the emulsification process, while experiments with different gas concentrations were carried out to investigate the effect of gas bubbles on droplet size. The results show that at the interface of oil and water, gas bubbles with a radius larger than the resonance radius collapse and sink into the water phase, inducing (oil-water) blended liquid jets across bubbles to generate oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) and water-in-oil (W/O) droplets in the oil phase and oil-in-water (O/W) droplets in the water phase, respectively. Gas bubbles with a radius smaller than the resonance radius at the interface always move towards the oil phase, accompanied with the generation of water droplets in the oil phase. In the oil phase, gas bubbles, which can attract bubbles nearby the interface, migrate to the interface of oil and water due to acoustic streaming, and generate numerous droplets. As for the gas bubbles in the water phase, those can break neighboring droplets into numerous finer ones during bubble oscillation. With the increase in gas content, more bubbles undergo chaotic oscillation, leading to smaller and more stable emulsion droplets, which explains the beneficial role of gas bubbles in USE. Violently oscillating microbubbles are, therefore, found to be the governing cavitation regime for emulsification process. These results provide new insights to the mechanisms of gas bubbles in oil-water emulsions, which may be useful towards the optimization of USE process in industry.
