Surface state engineering of carbon dot/carbon nanotube heterojunctions for boosting oxygen reduction performance

Platinum-based (Pt) catalysts are the most common commercial catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). Unfortunately, their high price, scarcity and poor durability hinder their further development. Therefore, the development of effective and economical ORR electrocatalysts has received increasing attention. Here, carbon dots (CDs) enriched in amino functional groups were successfully loaded onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a large surface area and helical structure through a surface state engineering strategy. The resulting composites (CD/CNTs) are 0D/1D nano heterojunction structures. The CD/CNTs showed superior ORR activity compared with CNTs and CDs (E_oneset = 0.95 V, E_1/2 = 0.81 V and limiting current density = 4.74 mA cm^-2). In addition, the stability of CD/CNTs in an alkaline medium was up to 30000 s. The excellent ORR performance of CD/CNTs can be attributed to the dominant role of amino-N, the synergistic effect of heterojunctions formed by CDs and CNTs, and the high Lewis basicity. The composite electrocatalyst synthesized by the CD-regulated CNT strategy is expected to be a reliable cathode candidate for future energy conversion devices.

N,S-co-doped FeCo Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Carbon Nanofibers as Efficient and Durable Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Finding high-performance, low-cost, efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is essential for sustainable energy conversion systems. Herein, highly efficient and durable iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)-supported nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped three-dimensional carbon nanofibers (FeCo-N, S@CNFs) were synthesized via electrospinning followed by carbonization. The as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs served as efficient ORR catalysts in alkaline 0.1 m KOH solutions that were N₂ and O₂ -saturated. The experimental results revealed that FeCo-N,S@CNFs were highly active ORR catalysts with defect-rich active pyridinic N and pyrrolic N and metal bonds to N and S atom sites, which enhanced the ORR activity. FeCo-N,S@CNFs exhibited a high onset potential (E_onset =0.89 V) and half-wave potential (E_1/2 =0.85 V), similar to the electrocatalytic activity of commercial Pt/C. Additionally, the durability of the as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs catalysts was maintained for 14 h with long-term stability and high tolerance to methanol stability, accounting for their excellent catalytic ability. Furthermore, Co-N@CNFs, Fe-N@CNFs, and varying Fe and Co ratios were compared with those of FeCo-N,S@CNFs. Synergistic interactions between metals and heteroatoms were believed to play a significant role in enhancing the ORR activity. Owing to their excellent catalytic reduction ability, the as-prepared FeCo-N,S@CNFs can be widely used in battery-based systems and replace commercial Pt/C in fuel cell applications.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

Dielectric Properties of Hybrid Polyethylene Composites Containing Cobalt Nanoparticles and Carbon Nanotubes

Polymer composites with electrically conductive inclusions are intensively developed for microwave shielding applications, where lightweight and elastic coatings are necessary. In this paper, dielectric properties of hybrid polyethylene composites containing cobalt nanoparticles and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were investigated in the wide frequency range of 20–40 GHz for electromagnetic shielding applications. The percolation threshold in the hybrid system is close to 6.95 wt% MWCNT and 0.56 Co wt%. Cobalt nanoparticles (up to highest investigated concentration 4.8 wt%) had no impact on the percolation threshold, and for the fixed total concentration of fillers, the complex dielectric permittivity is higher for composites with bigger MWCNT concentrations. Moreover, the microwave complex dielectric permittivity of composites with high concentration of fillers is quite high (for composites with 13.4 wt% MWCNT and 1.1 wt% Co ε′ ≈ ε″ ≈ 20 at 30 GHz, it corresponds to microwave absorption 50% of 1 mm thickness plate); therefore, these composites are suitable for electromagnetic shielding applications.
