Abstract
An unprecedented copper-catalyzed tandem reaction of 1,6-enynes with diazo compounds via a cross-coupling/[2 + 2] cycloaddition sequence was reported. A library of methylenecyclobutane-fused ring systems including cyclobuta[b]indolines, cyclobuta[b]benzofuran, benzo[b]cyclobuta[d]thiophene, and bicyclo[3.2.0] structures were obtained in moderate to excellent yields under very mild reaction conditions. The reaction exhibited high proximal-regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Moreover, 1,6-allenene has proven to be the key intermediate and proceeds via a thermally promoted [2 + 2] cycloaddition in the absence of copper catalyst.

Abstract
An important strategy for the efficient generation of diversity in molecular structures is the utilization of common starting materials in chemodivergent transformations. The most studied solutions for switching the chemoselectivity rely on the catalyst, ligand, additive, solvent, temperature, time, pressure, pH and even small modifications in the substrate. In this review article several processes have been selected such as inter- and intramolecular cyclizations, including carba-, oxa-, thia- and oxazacyclizations promoted mainly by Brønsted or Lewis acids, transition metals and organocatalysts, as well as radical reactions. Catalyst-controlled intra- and intermolecular cyclizations are mainly described to give five- and six-membered rings. Cycloaddition reactions involving (2+2), (3+2), (3+3), (4+1), (4+2), (5+2), (6+2) and (7+2) processes are useful reactions for the synthesis of cyclic systems using organocatalysts, metal catalysts and Lewis acid-controlled processes. Addition reactions mainly of carba- and heteronucleophiles to unsaturated conjugated substrates can give different adducts via metal catalyst-, Lewis acid- and solvent-dependent processes. Carbonylation reactions of amines and phenols are carried out via ligand-controlled transition metal-catalyzed multicomponent processes. Ring-opening reactions starting mainly from cyclopropanols, cyclopropenols and epoxides or aziridines are applied to the synthesis of acyclic versus cyclic products under catalyst-control mainly by Lewis acids. Chemodivergent reduction reactions are performed using dissolving metals, sodium borohydride or hydrogen transfer conditions under solvent control. Oxidation reactions include molecular oxygen under solvent control or using different dioxiranes, as well as chemodivergent palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reactions using boronic acids are applied to aromatic and allenic compounds. Other chemodivergent reactions such as alkylations and allylations under transition metal catalysis, dimerization of acetylenes, bromination of benzylic substrates, and A3-couplings are performed via catalyst- or reaction condition-dependent processes.

Abstract
A metal-free preparation of structurally novel bicyclic azocine-β-lactams has been developed. The first examples accounting for the preparation of eight-membered rings from bis(allenes) in the absence of metals have been achieved by the thermolysis of nonconjugated 2-azetidinone-tethered bis(allenes) on application of microwave irradiation. This selective carbocyclization reaction has been studied experimentally, and additionally, its mechanism has been investigated by a DFT study.

Abstract
Mono- and 1,3-disubstituted allenes were synthesized from the corresponding propargylamines via palladium-catalysed hydride-transfer reaction. In the current transformation, propargylic amines can be handled as allenyl anion equivalents and introduced into various electrophiles to be transformed into allenes under palladium-catalyzed conditions.

Abstract
Two different stereocontrolled accesses to new 4-hydroxypipecolic acid analogues with a bicyclic beta-lactam structure have been developed by using intramolecular reductive amination or allenic hydroamination reactions in 2-azetidinone-tethered azides. The access to the cyclization precursors was achieved from 3-azido-4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehyde via metal-mediated carbonyl-allenylation in aqueous environment or by organocatalytic direct aldol reaction. The tin hydride-promoted cyclization of the 2-azetidinone-tethered azidoallene is totally regioselective for the central allenic carbon providing a fused piperidine.

Abstract
The cyanosilylation of enantiopure 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes with tert-butyldimethylsilyl cyanide was promoted by either molecular sieves or catalytic amount of sodium carbonate to give O-silylated beta-lactam cyanohydrins with good yield and diastereoselectivity. In contrast, Lewis acids did not effectively promote the cyanosilylation under different experimental conditions, and instead hydrocyanation took place affording the corresponding free cyanohydrins in variable yield and selectivity. Starting from beta-lactam cyanohydrin hybrids, two concise, complementary stereocontrolled routes to optically pure orthogonally protected anti,anti-4-amino-3,5-piperidine diols were achieved. Key features of the first approach include chemoselective reductive opening of the beta-lactam ring with LiBH4 to a 3-amino-5-hydroxy pentanenitrile followed by reductive cyclization of a conveniently functionalized cyanomesylate derivative with NaBH4/NiCl2. The second approach involves LiAlH4 reduction of protected anti,anti-4-amino-3,5-dihydroxypiperidin-2-ones, which were easily obtained by chemoselective reduction of the cyano group in the beta-lactam cyanohydrin hybrids with NaBH4/NiCl2 and subsequent intramolecular rearrangement of the resulting amino beta-lactams. Both routes make use of an oxidative N-dearylation with diacetoxyiodobenzene of a 4-methoxyphenylamino group as a common synthetic step. Specifically, the utility of this novel reaction sequence has been demonstrated by the synthesis of fully orthogonally protected sialidase inhibitors.

Abstract
The reaction of enantiopure 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes with unmodified ketones was catalyzed by L-proline as well as by D-proline, to give the corresponding gamma-amino-beta-hydroxy ketones with good yields and diastereoselectivities. The obtained results implied that (2R,3R)-4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes and L-proline are a matched pair for diastereoselective induction.
