Abstract
A novel non-C2-symmetric bis-benzimidazolium salt derived from (±)-valinol has been prepared by a simple and straightforward process in good yield. The structure of bis-benzimidazolium salt provided a bulky steric group on the ethylene bridge; which facilitates the catalytic efficacy in the C(sp2)-C(sp2) formation. Its catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of unactivated aryl chlorides has been found to have high efficacy in 1 mol% Pd loading. This protocol demonstrated the potential on the synthesis of sterically hindered biaryls.

Abstract
An asymmetric homoenolate cross-annulation of enals and aldehydes with high enantioselectivity is realized by NHC-catalyzed chemoselective umpolung of enals. The reaction proceeds in a highly chemoselective manner, selectively generating the conjugated Breslow intermediates from enals rather than aldehydes, enabling the homoenolate addition of enals to aldehydes in preference to competing acyl anion-mediated reactions. Enantioenriched substituted γ-butyrolactones are formed in good yields with high enantioselectivities.

Abstract
In the last few decades, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, characterized by attractive features, have increased their presence in transition-metal catalysis. However, chiral NHC ligands still require further design enhancement to realize far more exciting synthetic applications. This review documents advances in chiral NHC ligands, focusing on planar-chiral ferrocene-based NHCs. As the basic shape of most classes of NHC rings is planar, it seems rational to employ a planar-chiral element in the design of chiral NHC ligands.

Abstract
Catalytic, stereoselective N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed reactions facilitate efficient construction of many different heterocyclic compounds, such as the enantioenriched 5-membered (γ) lactones highlighted in this tutorial review. Herein, various strategies to enable formal [3+2] type annulations between electrophilic carbonyl equivalents and homoenolate nucleophiles for the synthesis of γ-lactones are summarized.

Abstract
A general and enantioselective N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed lactonization of simple enals and α-ketoesters has been discovered using a new ternary cooperative catalytic system. The highly selective annulation was achieved by using a combination of a chiral NHC, a hydrogen-bond donor, and a metal salt, facilitating self-assembly of the reactive partners. A proposed model for this new mode of NHC chiral relay catalysis is supported by experimental and computational mechanistic studies.

Abstract
The physical factors governing the Diels-Alder reactivity of (2,7)pyrenophanes have been computationally explored using state-of-the-art Density Functional Theory calculations. It is found that the [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions between these cyclophanes and tetracyanoethylene, which occur concertedly through highly asynchronous transition states, proceed with lower activation barriers and are more exothermic than the analogous process involving the parent planar pyrene. The influence of the bent equilibrium geometry of the pyrenophane as a function of the length of the bridge as well as the nature of the tether on the transformation are analyzed in detail. By means of the Activation Strain Model of reactivity and the Energy Decomposition Analysis methods, a detailed quantitative understanding of the reactivity of this particular family of cyclophanes is presented.

Abstract
The efficient asymmetric synthesis of highly substituted succinimides from α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and α-ketoamides via NHC-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition has been developed. The new scalable protocol significantly expands the utility of NHC catalysis for the synthesis of heterocycles and provides easy access to assemble a wide range of succinimides from simple starting materials.

Abstract
NHC-catalyzed divergent annulation of enals with heterocyclic enones was developed to produce benzofuran/indole-containing ε-lactones or spiro-heterocycles in a highly diastereo- and enantioselective fashion. The chemo-selectivity controlled by the chiral catalyst backbone is particularly noteworthy.

A highly selective NHC-catalyzed synthesis of γ-butyrolactones from the fusion of enals and α-ketophosphonates has been developed. Computational modeling of competing transition states guided a rational design strategy to achieve enhanced levels of enantioselectivity with a new tailored C1-symmetric biaryl-saturated imidazolium-derived NHC catalyst.

Abstract
A cooperative catalysis approach for the enantioselective formal [3+2] addition of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to isatins has been developed. Homoenolate annulations of β-aryl enals catalyzed by an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) require the addition of lithium chloride for high levels of enantioselectivity. This NHC-catalyzed annulation has been used for the total synthesis of maremycin B.

Abstract
Lewis acid activation with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis has presented new opportunities for enantioselective reaction development. Recent findings illustrate that Lewis acids can play an important role in homoenolate annulations by: enhancement of the reactivity, reversal of the diastereo- or regioselectivity, and activation of previously inactive electrophiles. Additionally, the incorporation of a Lewis acid into Brønsted base-catalyzed conjugate addition allowed for an increase in yields.

Abstract
A new class of enantiopure carbene precursors based on cheap camphor has been developed, and a restricted rotation of one N-substituent due to the C-10 methyl group of the camphor skeleton has been found; in situ prepared corresponding carbenes revealed the same behaviour.
