Modulation of Spectrokinetic Properties ofo-Quinonoid Reactive Intermediates by Electronic Factors: Time-Resolved Laser Flash and Steady-State Photolysis Investigations of Photochromic 6- and 7-Arylchromenes

Influence of Triptycene Annulation on the Photochromism of Diphenylnaphthopyrans: Entropic Control of Thermal Reversion

Regioisomeric naphthopyrans annulated with triptycene, i. e., Prox-NP and Dist-NP, display divergent photochromic behaviors. While steady-state photolysis of Dist-NP led to a very labile colored intermediate that is not observable at room temperature, Prox-NP yielded a remarkably stable species characterized by X-ray crystallography as the TT isomer of o-quinonoid intermediate (Prox-NPQ) with t_1/2 ca. 0.18 years at 298 K. The kinetic analysis of thermal reversion reveals that the bleaching of Prox-NPQ is entropically controlled; the steric effect due to the rigid triptycene scaffold renders Prox-NP a highly constrained system such that the photogenerated colored o-quinonoid form is more entropically relaxed. This constitutes the first instance of an entropically-controlled thermal reversion for the celebrated class of photochromic naphthopyrans. Based on the response of Prox-NP and its colored intermediate Prox-NPQ to different stimuli, namely, light, heat, and acid, the molecular system can be likened to a logic gate with the 'INHIBIT' function.

Homoconjugation in triptycenes: an inquiry through photochromism

Stabilization of the fleeting photogenerated o-quinonoid colored intermediate of diphenylpyran-annulated triptycene (Trip-chrom) lends credence to homoconjugation.

Contrasting Photochromic and Acidochromic Behaviors of Pyridyl- and Pyrimidylethynylated Mono- and Bis-Benzopyrans

Investigation of photochromic and acidochromic behaviors of a set of pyridyl- and pyrimidylethynylated mono- and bis-benzopyrans reveals an intriguing influence of the N-heteroaryl ring on spectrokinetic properties of the photogenerated o-quinonoid colored reactive intermediates. While the absorption maxima of the pyridylethynylated bis-benzopyran and its photogenerated o-quinonoid colored species undergo bathochromic shifts by ca. 40 and 22 nm, respectively, in the presence of an acid (e.g., trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)), the same remain unaffected for the analogous pyrimidylethynylated bis-benzopyran and its photogenerated o-quinonoid colored species under similar conditions. Modification of the photochromic behavior of these benzopyrans and, hence, spectrokinetic properties of their photogenerated o-quinonoid species in the presence of H⁺ is a consequence of relative proton affinities of N-heteroaryl rings, i.e., pyridyl/pyrimidyl, and the resonance effects relayed through the ethynyl spacers in a push-pull π-delocalized-type skeleton; the mesomeric effects operate in a contrasting manner depending on the N-heteroaryl ring in the absence and in the presence of an acid. These molecular systems offer a unique opportunity to modulate both photochromic and acidochromic properties of benzopyrans and their photogenerated colored o-quinonoid intermediates by leveraging N-heteroaromatic rings.

Transition-metal-free α-arylation of oxindoles via visible-light-promoted electron transfer

An operationally simple photochemical strategy for the direct arylation of oxindoles with (hetero)aryl halides in the absence of both transition metals and photoredox catalysts has been developed. The reaction provides an efficient way to construct various 3-aryloxindole building blocks of pharmaceutical interest at ambient temperature by using household compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs as the light source. Preliminarily, mechanistic studies revealed that the intermolecular electron transfer relied on the formation of photon-absorbing electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes between electron-rich oxindole enolates and electron-deficient (hetero)aryl halides, and a radical chain mechanism was operative.

P-Type Photochromism of New Helical Naphthopyrans: Synthesis and Photochemical, Photophysical and Theoretical Study

Two novel helical naphthopyrans have been synthesised. The helical scaffold has the interesting effect of increasing the thermal stability of the transoid-trans (TT) open isomer formed upon UV irradiation of the closed form (CF), which transforms these naphthopyrans from thermal to photochemical photochromes. The photochromic performance is excellent in both polar and apolar solvents and the conversion percentage from the CF to the TT form can be as high as 92.8 %. We propose a new method to determine the quantum yields of the photochemical processes that lead to transoid-cis (TC) and TT isomers, and their molar absorption coefficients. The thermal stability of the TT and TC isomers has been studied in different solvents. The quantum yields of fluorescence before and after irradiation, along with the decay lifetimes, have also been measured. TD-DFT calculations have been performed to determine the relative thermodynamic stability of the species involved in the photochromic mechanism and to rationalise their spectral properties.
