Abstract
Acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts-type cyclization of tetrapyrrolic BF2 complex 1 and α,α'-dibromotripyrrin 2 gave 5,10,23-trimesityl [28]heptaphyrin(1.1.0.0.1.0.0) BF2 complex 3BF2 as a stable and moderate antiaromatic macrocycle. Demetalation of 3BF2 with methanesulfonic acid followed by treatment with HCl gave free-base salt 3HCl that holds a chloride anion at the core. This salt displays a planar structure with an inverted pyrrole and a stronger paratropic ring current. Metalation of neutral free-base 3 with PdCl2 gave bis-PdII complex 3Pd2 as a stable antiaromatic molecule. The 1H NMR spectrum of 3Pd2 displays signals due to pyrrolic β-protons in the range of -1.06 ∼ -1.90 ppm, indicating the unprecedented strong paratropic ring current.

Abstract
Recently, Baird (anti)aromaticity has been referred to as a description of excited-state (anti)aromaticity. With the term of Baird's rule, recent studies have intensively verified that the Hückel aromatic [4n + 2]π (or antiaromatic [4n]π) molecules in the ground state are reversed to give Baird aromatic [4n]π (or Baird antiaromatic [4n + 2]π) molecules in the excited states. Since the Hückel (anti)aromaticity has great influence on the molecular properties and reaction mechanisms, the Baird (anti)aromaticity has been expected to act as a dominant factor in governing excited-state properties and processes, which has attracted intensive scientific investigations for the verification of the concept of reversed aromaticity in the excited states. In this scientific endeavor, porphyrinoids have recently played leading roles in the demonstration of the aromaticity reversal in the excited states and its conceptual development. The distinct structural and electronic nature of porphyhrinoids depending on their (anti)aromaticity allow the direct observation of excited-state aromaticity reversal, Baird's rule. The explicit experimental demonstration with porphyrinoids has contributed greatly to its conceptual development and application in novel functional organic materials. Based on the significant role of porphyrinoids in the field of excited-state aromaticity, this review provides an overview of the experimental verification of the reversal concept of excited-state aromaticity by porphyrinoids and the recent progress on its conceptual application in novel functional molecules.

Abstract
Four examples of stable nonaromatic pyridine containing heteroheptaphyrins (pyrithiaheptaphyrins) 2-5 were synthesized in 8-13% yields by [5+2] condensation of newly synthesized pyridine-based pentapyrrane 8 and bithiophene diol 9 a-d. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of macrocycle 2 proved that the macrocycle assumes a highly planar structure with two inverted thiophene rings. The heteroheptaphyrins 2-5 are asymmetric and showed a greater number of resonances in 1 H NMR spectra compared to our previously reported symmetric heterohexaphyrin (pyrithiahexaphyrin) 1 c. Most of the macrocyclic core protons in pyrithiahepaphyrins 2-5 experienced upfield/downfield shifts compared to pyrithiahexaphyrin 1 c indicating the alteration of π-conjugation in the macrocycles. The absorption bands were significantly red-shifted and located in the NIR region in macrocycles 2-5 compared to 1 c supporting the increase of π-delocalization. The theoretical studies support the experimental findings and NICS(0) value supports the non-aromaticity of the macrocycles.

Abstract
meso-Aryl dipyrromethanes are important building blocks to create various practical molecules, and the electron-withdrawing effect of the meso-aryls can play an important role in improving/controlling their reactivities in further reactions: meso-Pentafluorophenyl and meso-(2,6-dichlorophenyl) substituted dipyrromethanes towards the associating dipyrrins and other derivatives have been investigated, in which coordination with different transition metals followed by the dissociation of the metal coordination by interruption of proton and halide ions have been verified. Furthermore, simple DDQ-oxidations of the dipyrromethanes have afforded DDQ-dipyrrin adducts which were delivered to distinctly advanced molecular rearrangements in the presence of acid and base. Vinylene bisdipyrrin compounds, obtained in the reactions of DDQ-dipyrrin adducts with a Lewis base triethylamine, have produced expanded porphyrinoid bis-nickel complexes during the metalation procedure with nickel acetate, while a cobalt metalation of the vinylene bisdipyrrin compounds resulted in an isolation of diamagnetic octahedral cobalt(III) complex. Moreover, meso-pentafluorophenyl and meso-(2,6-dichlorophenyl) dipyrromethanes have been useful platforms to accomplish size-controlled series of meso-aryl-substituted expanded porphyrins and easy separation/purification of selective meso-aryl expanded porphyrins, in which advanced metal complexes and various fascinating properties and reactivities admitting moderate functional molecules have arisen.

Abstract
Two sterically crowded benzo-tetrathiafulvalene (BTTF)-annulated expanded porphyrins (BTTF7-F and BTTF8) are synthesized. Detailed photophysical investigations reveal their intrinsic intramolecular charge transfer (CT) character, originated from partial electron transfer from electron-rich TTF units to the relatively electron-deficient macrocyclic core. This finding stands in contrast to what was observed in the previously reported Figure-of-eight conformer of BTTF-annulated [28]hexaphyrin (BTTF6), in which a typical π-π* electronic transition from HOMO to LUMO was observed. However, core expansion in BTTF7-F and BTTF8 makes the oligopyrrole macrocyclic cores relatively more electron-deficient, facilitating the effective intramolecular CT process. Comparative electrochemical investigations reveal that the current generated at the oxidative region is directly proportional to the number of TTF units attached to the macrocyclic core. This work demonstrates the control of the intramolecular CT process through incremental addition of TTF units to the macrocyclic core. Facile multielectron electrochemical oxidations of these expanded porphyrins suggest that they behave like potential multielectron reservoirs.

Abstract
Di-2,7-naphthihexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), a non-aromatic carba-analogue of the hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1), incorporating two built-in 2,7-naphthylene moieties was synthesized as two separate, conformationally locked stereoisomers. Both conformers followed complex protonation pathways involving structurally different species, which can be targeted under kinetic and thermodynamic control. The neutralization of the ultimate dicationic product, accessible from both stereoisomers of the free base, allowed to realize the complex conformational switching cycle involving six structurally different species.

Abstract
A novel bis-palladium(II) complex of doubly N-confused octaphyrin (Pd[Formula: see text]-2) adopting a Möbius-twisted topological structure was synthesized and characterized. Due to the effective 36[Formula: see text]-electronic delocalization over the Möbius-twisted octaphyrin scaffold, characteristic Soret and Q-like absorption features were observed in the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the complex Pd[Formula: see text]-2 exhibited weak aromatic character attributed to the distinct cross-conjugated resonance contribution as inferred from the 1H NMR chemical shifts as well as theoretical assessments ([Formula: see text] nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS)). Since the bis-palladium(II) complexation of doubly N-confused octaphyrin 2 imparted significant conformational stability, topologically chiral enantiomers of Pd[Formula: see text]-2 were successfully separated as ([Formula: see text]- and ([Formula: see text]-twisted forms. The resulting isomers revealed relatively large circular dichroism (CD) responses with an absorption anisotropy factor of [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 0.009 in the NIR region ([Formula: see text] 823 nm). In addition, the cyclic voltammogram of Pd[Formula: see text]-2 revealed redox-rich properties due to its large [Formula: see text]-conjugated system.

Abstract
The concept of chemical topology has generated considerable interest among chemists and one of the state-of-the-art topics is Möbius topology in cyclic π-conjugated molecules. In this regard, expanded porphyrins have been extensively studied because of their facile topological interconversions and attractive optoelectronic properties. A typical example involves [28]hexaphyrins: they show topological conversion between planar Hückel and twisted Möbius topologies owing to their flexible structure. With this in mind, we designed a [28]hexaphyrin where one dimethine pyrrole unit was replaced with dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophene (β-DTT), aiming at a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-systems by a change in molecular topologies. Considering that the β-DTT unit can offer both macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits, we envisioned that a combination of the topological interconversion of [28]hexaphyrin with the two π-circuits of the β-DTT unit would enable a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits on Möbius and Hückel topologies, respectively, by a simple conformational change. Unexpectedly, the hexaphyrin revealed a unique, unprecedented π-system switching between a Möbius cross-conjugated π-system and a Hückel antiaromatic π-system, which was fully supported by both experimental and theoretical investigations. Meanwhile, the [28]hexaphyrin was also found to be redox interconvertible with the corresponding [26]hexaphyrin with a Hückel cross-conjugated π-system. These results demonstrate that the β-DTT unit is a new effective motif to realize π-system switching by changing molecular and π-system topologies. Importantly, external stimuli, i.e., solvent, as well as oxidation/reduction can be used to trigger the topological changes in expanded porphyrins with the help of the β-DTT unit.

Abstract
This review underscores the conformational flexibility of porphyrinoids, a unique class of functional molecules, starting from the smallest triphyrins(1.1.1) via [18]porphyrins(1.1.1.1) and concluding with a variety of expanded porphyrinoids and heteroporphyrinoids, including the enormous [96]tetracosaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0). The specific flexibility of porphyrinoids has been documented as instrumental in the designing or redesigning of macrocyclic frames, particularly in the search for adjustable platforms for coordination or organometallic chemistry, anion binding, or mechanistic switches in molecular devices. A structural prearrangement to coordinate one or more metal ions has been outlined. The coverage of the topic focuses on representative examples of geometry or conformational rearrangements for each selected class of the numerous porphyrinoids accordingly categorized by the number of built-in carbo- or heterocycles.

While hydrogenated porphyrins are abundant in natural and synthetic compounds, antiaromatic hydrogenated porphyrinoids have not been synthesized to date. Here, we report bacteriochlorin-like NiII tetrahydronorcorrole complexes as the first examples of antiaromatic porphyrinoids that contain saturated pyrrole units.

Abstract
The switching phenomena of conformation with π-electronic network through deprotonation–protonation processes were investigated by employing a series of 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1).
The switching phenomena of conformation with π-electronic network through deprotonation–protonation processes were investigated by employing a series of 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1). They showed significant changes in the absorption and emission spectra with deprotonation, and returned to the initial state with protonation. Through NMR measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, we found that the 5,20-bis(α-oligothienyl) substituted hexaphyrins, which possess acyclic, helical electronic networks involving oligothienyl chains in dumbbell conformations (type-I) in a neutral form, underwent effective deprotonation upon treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) to generate the corresponding dianions, which display cyclic electronic networks with enhanced aromaticity in rectangular conformations (type-II). Our quantum calculation results provide an unambiguous description for the switchable conformation and π-conjugation, which revealed that a deprotonation-induced enhanced aromatic conjugation pathway is involved in the switchable π-electronic network.
