Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed syntheses of oligothiophene and polythiophene were carried out with Ni(cod)(dq) (COD: 1,5-cycloctadiene; DQ: duroquinone) as a catalyst precursor. Studies on the ligand exchange of Ni(cod)(dq) revealed that a high temperature was necessary to replace COD and DQ with PPh3 and N-heterocyclic carbene IPr. A coupling reaction of a metalated 3-hexylthiophene with 2-chloro-3-hexylthiophene employing Ni(cod)(dq) with IPr proceeded with a remarkably reduced amount of homocoupling byproduct. Polymerization of 2-chloro-3-hexylthiophene with Ni(cod)(dq)/DPPP also resulted in the reduction of the regioregularity defect.

Abstract
Developmental studies are ongoing to discover a way to utilise new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Ni complexes as catalysts. Using a bulky NHC ligand, it is possible to synthesise an NHC/phosphine-mixed heteroleptic Ni(II) complex, which can serve as an excellent catalyst for various cross-coupling reactions. During the study of the reaction mechanisms using these Ni complexes, NHC-Ni(I) complexes were accidentally discovered, and it was observed that they exhibit excellent catalytic activity for cross-coupling reactions. The possibility of the presence of NHC-Ni(I) intermediates in these catalytic reaction pathways has been experimentally demonstrated. Depending on the type of reaction, dinuclear Ni(I) and mononuclear Ni(I) complexes can function as intermediates. The results of the investigation of each reaction mechanism are summarised, and the prospects are described.

Abstract
Certainly, the success of polythiophenes is due in the first place to their outstanding electronic properties and superior processability. Nevertheless, there are additional reasons that contribute to arouse the scientific interest around these materials. Among these, the large variety of chemical modifications that is possible to perform on the thiophene ring is a precious aspect. In particular, a turning point was marked by the diffusion of synthetic strategies for the preparation of terthiophenes: the vast richness of approaches today available for the easy customization of these structures allows the finetuning of their chemical, physical, and optical properties. Therefore, terthiophene derivatives have become an extremely versatile class of compounds both for direct application or for the preparation of electronic functional polymers. Moreover, their biocompatibility and ease of functionalization make them appealing for biology and medical research, as it testifies to the blossoming of studies in these fields in which they are involved. It is thus with the willingness to guide the reader through all the possibilities offered by these structures that this review elucidates the synthetic methods and describes the full chemical variety of terthiophenes and their derivatives. In the final part, an in-depth presentation of their numerous bioapplications intends to provide a complete picture of the state of the art.

Abstract
Due to a wide range of applications in electronic materials, polythiophenes attract considerable attention in organic and polymer syntheses as well as in materials science. For the purpose of developing the practical synthetic protocol, this review focuses on the deprotonative pathway in the preparation of thiophene organometallic monomer, which was shown to be effective employing 2-halo-3-substituted thiophene as a monomer precursor. The thus metallated thiophene monomer was shown to undergo polymerization by nickel(II) complex catalysis, with which highly regioregular head-to-tail (HT)-type polythiophenes were obtained with controlled molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Several polythiophene derivatives with modified thiophene-ring and side-chain structures were shown to be designed in order to achieve the designed functionality as materials.

Abstract
Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of heteroaryl polyhalides with aryl boronates are surveyed. Drawing on data from literature sources as well as bespoke searches of Pfizer's global chemistry RKB and CAS Scifinder® databases, the factors that determine the site-selectivity of these reactions are discussed with a view to rationalising the trends found.

Abstract
Brominated oligothiophene with a branched structure was subjected to deprotonative metalation with TMPMgCl·LiCl and the thus formed metalated species polymerized with Ni(ii) catalyst to proceed in a linear selective manner through α-α conjugation.

Abstract
Conditions allowing the one pot 2,5-diheteroarylation of 2,5-dibromothiophene derivatives in the presence of palladium catalysts are reported. Using KOAc as the base, DMA as the solvent and only 0.5–2 mol % palladium catalysts, the target 2,5-diheteroarylated thiophenes were obtained in moderate to good yields and with a wide variety of heteroarenes such as thiazoles, thiophenes, furans, pyrroles, pyrazoles or isoxazoles. Moreover, sequential heteroarylation reactions allow the access to 2,5-diheteroarylated thiophenes bearing two different heteroaryl units.

Abstract
Operationally simple, efficient, and widely applicable Pummerer annulations of simple phenols with ketene dithioacetal monoxides, with the aid of trifluoroacetic anhydride, have been shown to provide a variety of benzofurans having a methylthio group at the 2-position. Subsequent and newly developed nickel-catalyzed arylation at the methylthio group culminates in diversity-oriented synthesis of multisubstituted benzofurans. Our extended Pummerer annulation/cross-coupling sequence is powerful enough to synthesize biologically active natural products as well as highly fluorescent benzofuran derivatives.
