Abstract
We introduce switchable chemoselectivity strategies based on the hydrazone phosphaketene intermediate to synthesize three classes of 1,2,4-diazaphosphol derivatives. First, the five-membered heterocyclic P and O anion intermediates acted as nucleophilic agents in the selective construction of C-P and C-O bonds. Second, the phosphinidene served as a phosphorus synthon, allowing for the formation of C-P and C-N bonds. Finally, a stepwise mechanism, supported by DFT calculations, was invoked to explain the reaction selectivity.

Abstract
Over the past decade, the reactivity of 2-phosphaethynolate (OCP-), a heavier analogue of the cyanate anion, has been the subject of momentous interest in the field of modern organometallic chemistry. It is used as a precursor to novel phosphorus-containing heterocycles and as a ligand in decarbonylative processes, serving as a synthetic equivalent of a phosphinidene derivative. This perspective aims to describe advances in the reactivities of phosphaethynolate and arsaethynolate anions (OCE-; E = P, As) with main-group element, transition metal, and f-block metal scaffolds. Further, the unique structures and bonding properties are discussed based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

Abstract
The cyano(triphenylsilyl)phosphanide anion was prepared as a sodium salt from 2-phosphaethynolate. The electronic structure of this new cyano(silyl)phosphanide was studied via computational methods and its reactivity investigated using various electrophiles and Lewis acids, demonstrating its P- and N-nucleophilicity. The ambident reactivity is in agreement with computations. The silyl group also shows lability and therefore the cyano(silyl)phosphanide can be considered as a phosphacyanamide synthon, [PCN]2- , and serves as building block for the transfer of a PCN moiety.

Abstract
Primary acyl-phosphines are scarce in the literature. Here we show that the reaction of Ph3 GePCO with the ylide Ph3 PCH2 proceeds to give the species Ph3 PCHC(O)PH(GePh3 ) 1. Deprotonation of 1 with Na[N(SiMe3 )2 ] generates the salt [Na(THF)2 ][Ph3 PCHC(O)P(GePh3 )] 2 which provides subsequent access to the bis-germanylated acylphosphine, Ph3 PCHC(O)P(GePh3 )2 3. Alternatively, treatment of 1 with HCl in dioxane affords the primary acylphosphine Ph3 PCHC(O)PH2 4. Compound 4 is a rare example of an air stable primary acyl-phosphines and the first devoid of a stabilizing heteroatom adjacent to the carbonyl fragment.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of N-functionalised phosphinecarboxamides obtained by reaction of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion (PCO-) with diamines, specifically hydrazine, methylenediamine and ethylenediamine, in the presence of acid. The resulting neutral compounds can be deprotonated to generate phosphide anions that, when further reacted with electrophiles, form secondary phosphines.

Abstract
The synthesis of two novel ferrocenyl-substituted phosphinecarboxamides, FcNHC(O)PH2 (1; Fc = ferrocenyl) and FcCH2NHC(O)PH2 (2), is reported. These two primary phosphines were obtained by the reaction of aminoferrocene with sodium 2-phosphaethynolate in the presence of a proton source or, directly, from aminomethylferrocene hydrochloride and sodium 2-phosphaethynolate. Their ability to act as ligands was probed via reactions of 1 with rhodium(iii) and ruthenium(ii) precursors. The isoelectronic metal complexes [(η5-C5Me5)RhCl2(1-κP)] and [(η6-mes)RuCl2(1-κP)] were obtained. Treatment of these compounds with a base resulted in HCl elimination to afford phosphide-bridged dirhodium and diruthenium complexes highlighting that on coordination to a metal, the P-H bonds of these phosphinecarboxamides become increasingly protic.

Abstract
In all likelihood the first synthesis of the phosphaethynolate anion, PCO- , was performed in 1894 when NaPH2 was reacted with CO in an attempt to make Na(CP) accompanied by elimination of water. This reaction was repeated 117 years later when it was discovered that Na(OCP) and H2 are the products of this remarkable transformation. Li(OCP) was synthesized and fully characterized in 1992 but this salt proved to be too unstable to allow for a detailed investigation of its chemistry. It was not until the heavier analogues of this lithium salt were isolated, Na(OCP) and K(OCP) (both of which are remarkably stable and can be even dissolved in water), that the chemistry of this new functional group could be explored. Here we review the chemistry of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion, a heavier phosphorus-containing analogue of the cyanate anion, and describe the wide breadth of chemical transformations for which it has been thus far employed. Its use as a ligand, in decarbonylative and deoxygenative processes, and as a building block for novel heterocycles is described. In the mere twenty-six years since Becker first reported the isolation of this remarkable anion, it has become a fascinating reagent for the synthesis of a vast library of, often unprecedented, molecules and compounds.

Abstract
Over the course of the last six years, research on the synthesis and reactivity of molecular metal phosphaketenes (M-PCO) has gained increasing attention. However, lanthanide complexes of the heavier group 15 cyanate analogue PCO- have not been investigated so far. Herein we present exemplar studies on the nature and reactivity of rare-earth phosphaethynolato-complexes using three characteristic representatives of the rare-earth metals: Y, Nd and Sm. Our investigations comprise both +2 and +3 redox states, and one defined amidinate-based ligand set, as well as novel reaction pathways in the presence of the sequestering agents 18-crown-6 and 2,2,2-crypt.

Abstract
A simple synthesis of sodium 2-phosphanaphthalene-3-olate (1) based on the extrusion of N2 from phthalazine using Na[OCP] is reported. This heterocycle can be readily functionalized at the negatively charged oxygen center using a variety of electrophilic substrates. The coordination chemistry of both 1 and its neutral derivatives was explored, revealing their facile use as P-donor ligands for late-transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
The reaction of magnesium chloride with two equivalents of sodium phosphaethynolate, Na[OCP]·(dioxane)2.5 (1), yields a magnesium diphosphaethynolate complex, [(THF)4Mg(OCP)2] (3). The formation of compound 3 goes through a monosubstituted chloromagnesium phosphaethynolate Mg(OCP)Cl (2). The structure of 3 was determined via a single crystal X-ray diffraction study. For comparison, we also report the structure of a monomeric sodium phosphaethynolate complex, [Na(OCP)(dibenzo-18-crown-6)] (4).

Abstract
Reaction of the zirconium-benzyne complex [Cp2Zr(PMe3)(C6H4)] with sodium phosphaethynolate, Na[OCP], affords a zircono-phosphaalkene complex. Notably, unlike reactions of other transition metal complexes with Na[OCP] that yield the products of simple salt metathesis, this transformation represents novel Na[OCP] insertion chemistry and formation of an unusual solid state coordination polymer. The polymer is disrupted upon addition of Me3SiCl to afford a silyl-capped dimer that retains the zirconophosphaalkene functionality. Protonation of either form of zirconophosphaalkenes results in the formation of benzoylphosphine, PhC([double bond, length as m-dash]O)PH2.

Abstract
We report in this work a combined structural and state-of-the-art computational study of homopolar P-HH-P intermolecular contacts. Database surveys have shown the abundance of such surprisingly unexplored contacts, which are usually accompanied by other weak interactions in the solid state. By means of a detailed theoretical study utilizing SAPT(DFT), MP2, SCS-MP2, MP2C and CCSD(T) methods and both aug-cc-pVXZ and aug-cc-pCVXZ (X = D, T, Q, 5) basis sets as well as extrapolation to the CBS limit, we have shown that P-HH-P contacts are indeed attractive and considerably strong. SAPT(DFT) calculations have revealed the dispersive nature of the P-HH-P interaction with only minor contribution of the inductive term, whereas the first-order electrostatic term is clearly overbalanced by the first-order exchange energy. In general the computed interaction energies follow the trend: E ≈ E < E < E. Our results have also shown that the aug-cc-pVDZ (or aug-cc-pCVDZ) basis set is not yet well balanced and that the second-order dispersion energy term is the slowest converging among all SAPT(DFT) energy components. Compared to aug-cc-pVXZ basis sets, their core-correlation counterparts have a modest influence on all supermolecular interaction energies and a negligible influence on both the SAPT(DFT) interaction energy and its components.

Abstract
The reactions of the phosphaethynolate anion ([PCO]- ) with a range of boranes were explored. BPh3 and [PCO]- form a dimeric anion featuring P-B bonds and is prone to dissociation at room temperature. The more Lewis acidic borane B(C6 F5 )3 yields a less symmetric dimer of [PCO]- with P-B and P-O bonds. Less sterically demanding HB(C6 F5 )2 and H2 B(C6 F5 ) boranes form a third isomer with [PCO]- featuring both boranes bound to the same phosphorus atom. Despite the unexpected thermodynamic preference for P-coordination, computational data illustrate that electronic and steric features impact the binding modes of the resulting dianionic dimers.

Abstract
We describe the reactivity of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion (PCO-) towards enantiomerically pure α-amino acids (AAs) resulting in the formation of novel salts of phosphinecarboxamides bearing chiral functionalities. These transformations occurred quantitatively with all but one of the amino acids trialled (the basic amino acid arginine was found to be unreactive). The resulting ionic species can be readily protonated to afford N-(phosphanyl)carbonyl-amino acids, a novel group of amino acids bearing primary phosphine functionalities.

Abstract
We report fundamental studies on the reactivity of the 2-arsaethynolate anion (AsCO- ), a species that has only recently become synthetically accessible. The reaction of AsCO- with the bulky stannylene Ter2 Sn (Ter=2,6-bis[2,4,6-trimethylphenyl]phenyl) is described, which leads to the unexpected formation of a [Ter3 Sn2 As2 ]- cluster compound. On the reaction pathway to this cluster, several intermediates were identified and characterized. After the initial association of AsCO- to Ter2 Sn, decarbonylation occurs to give an anion featuring monocoordinate arsenic, [Ter2 SnAs]- . Both species are not stable under ambient conditions, and [Ter2 SnAs]- rearranges to form [TerSnAsTer]- , an unprecedented anionic mixed Group 14/15 alkene analogue.

Abstract
The reaction of Na(OCP) with mesitoyl chloride delivers an ester functionalized 1,2,4-oxadiphosphole in a clean and P-atom economic way. The reaction mechanism has been elucidated by means of detailed NMR-spectroscopic, kinetic and computational studies. The initially formed acyl phosphaketene undergoes a pseudo-coarctate cyclization with an (OCP)- anion under the loss of carbon monoxide to yield a five-membered ring anion. Subsequently, the nucleophilic attack of the formed heterocyclic anion on a second acyl chloride molecule results in the 1,2,4-oxadiphosphole. The transient acyl phosphaketene is conserved during the reaction in the form of four-membered ring adducts, which act as a reservoir. Consequently, the phosphaethynolate anion has three different functions in these reactions: it acts as a nucleophile, as an en-component in [2 + 2] cycloadditions and as a formal P- transfer reagent.

Abstract
The synthesis and isolation of the 2-arsaethynolate anion, AsCO(-) , and its subsequent reactivity towards heteroallenes is reported. Reactions with ketenes and carbodiimides afford four-membered anionic heterocycles in formal [2+2] cycloaddition reactions. By contrast, reaction with an isocyanate yielded a 1,4,2-diazaarsolidine-3,5-dionide anion and the unprecedented cluster anions As10 (2-) and As12 (4-) . These preliminary reactivity studies hint at the enormous potential synthetic utility of this novel anion, which may be employed as an arsenide (As(-) ) source.

Abstract
A synthesis of the 2-phosphathioethynolate anion, PCS-, under ambient conditions is reported. The coordination chemistry of PCO-, PCS- and their nitrogen-containing congeners is also explored. Photolysis of a solution of W(CO)6 in the presence of PCO- [or a simple ligand displacement reaction using W(CO)5(MeCN)] affords [W(CO)5(PCO)]- (1). The cyanate and thiocyanate analogues, [W(CO)5(NCO)]- (2) and [W(CO)5(NCS)]- (3), are also synthesised using a similar methodology, allowing for an in-depth study of the bonding properties of this family of related ligands. Our studies reveal that, in the coordination sphere of tungsten(0), the PCO- anion preferentially binds through the phosphorus atom in a strongly bent fashion, while NCO- and NCS- coordinate linearly through the nitrogen atom. Reactions between PCS- and W(CO)5(MeCN) similarly afford [W(CO)5(PCS)]-; however, due to the ambidentate nature of the anion, a mixture of both the phosphorus- and sulfur-bonded complexes (4a and 4b, respectively) is obtained. It was possible to establish that, as with PCO-, the PCS- ion also coordinates to the metal centre in a bent fashion.

Abstract
Sodium phosphaethynolate reacts with [MCl(PDI)] (M = Co, Ir; PDI = pyridinediimine) to give metallaphosphaketenes, which in the case of iridium rearranges into a dimetalladiphosphene.
Sodium phosphaethynolate reacts with [MCl(PDI)] (M = Co, Ir; PDI = pyridinediimine) to give metallaphosphaketenes, which in the case of iridium rearranges into a dimetalladiphosphene, via CO migration from phosphorus to the metal. Two different bonding modes of the PCO anion to CAAC-coinage metal complexes [CAAC: cyclic (alkyl)(amino)(carbene)] are reported, one featuring a strong Au–P bond and the other an η2 coordination to copper. The gold complex appears to be mostly unreactive whereas the copper complex readily reacts with various organic substrates. A completely free PCO anion was structurally characterized as the [Cu(La)2]+ (OCP)– salt. It results from the simple displacement of the PCO unit of the cationic (CAAC)Cu(PCO) complex by a second equivalent of CAAC.
