Abstract
A facile and convenient protocol for the regioselective construction of functionalized 2-hydroxybenzophenones is described. This protocol involves the Sc(OTf)3/BF3·OEt2-catalyzed benzannulation of 2-vinyloxirans with 3-formylchromone, which involves cascade in situ diene formation, [4 + 2] cycloaddition, elimination, and ring-opening strategies. Moreover, it provides an expedited synthetic pathway to access biologically intriguing 1,4-naphthoquinones and anthraquinones including vitamin K3 and tectoquinone. The synthesized compounds also hold potential for use as UV filters and show promise as chemosensors for Cu2+ and Mg2+ ions.

Abstract
Molecular metal oxides are key materials in diverse fields like energy storage and conversion, molecular magnetism and as model systems for solid-state metal oxides. To improve their performance and increase the variety of accessible motifs, new synthetic approaches are necessary. Herein, we report a universal, new precursor to access different metal-functionalized polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters. The precursor is synthesized by a novel solid-state thermal treatment procedure. Solution-phase test reactions at room temperature and pressure show that reaction of the precursor with various metal nitrate salts gives access to a range of metal-functionalized POVs. The first nitrate-templated molecular calcium vanadate cluster is reported. We show that this precursor could open new access routes to POV components for molecular magnetism, energy technologies or catalysis.

Challenges in transfer of gas-liquid reactions from batch to continuous operation: dimensional analysis and simulations for aerobic oxidation. J Flow Chem 2021. Abstract
AbstractThe transfer of gas-liquid reactions from conventional batch processes into continuous operation using milli and micro reactors is claimed as an important step towards process intensification. Importantly, this transfer step should be realized in an early phase of process development, already, in order to minimize research efforts towards the undesired operation strategy. The main challenge of this approach, therefore, arises from lack of knowledge in the early stage of process development and the resulting system with high degrees of freedom. This contribution presents an approach to tackle this challenge by means of mathematical modelling and simulation for the aerobic oxidation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) catalyzed by polyoxometalates (POMs) being used as example for gas-liquid reactions. The reaction was chosen as it provides sufficient complexity, since it consists of three consecutive oxidation steps of DHA and a parallel catalytic redox-cycle according to a Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism. It also provides the challenge of unknown reaction kinetics, which have been estimated in this contribution. The dimensionless balance equations for reactor modeling are derived and parametrized based on early stage experimental results obtained in batch operation mode. The discrimination between batch and continuous operation was performed by means of characteristic dimensionless numbers using the identical mathematical model for comparability reasons. The model was used to perform sensitivity studies with emphasis on the interplay between mass transfer characteristics and reaction kinetics for both the batch and continuous operation mode. The simulation results show that the performance of both operation modes mainly depend on the oxidation state of the POM catalyst, which is caused by the differences in oxygen availability. Therefore, results obtained in batch operation mode are prone to be masked by mass transfer issues, which affects catalyst and reactor development at the same time and may thus cause maldevelopments. With respect to process development it can thus be concluded that the transfer from batch to continuous operation together with mathematical modeling is important in an early phase, already, in order to detect limitations misleading the development. Finally, even simple models with roughly estimated parameters from preliminary experiments are shown to be sufficient in the early phase and can systematically be improved, in the subsequent phases.

Abstract
Molecular vanadium oxides, or polyoxovanadates (POVs), have recently emerged as a new class of molecular energy conversion/storage materials, which combine diverse, chemically tunable redox behavior and reversible multielectron storage capabilities. This Review explores current challenges, major breakthroughs, and future opportunities in the use of POVs for energy conversion and storage. The reactivity, advantages, and limitations of POVs are explored, with a focus on their use in lithium and post-lithium-ion batteries, redox-flow batteries, and light-driven energy conversion. Finally, emerging themes and new research directions are critically assessed to provide inspiration for how this promising materials class can advance research in sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract
Polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are an important subclass of polyoxometalates with a broad range of molecular compositions and physicochemical properties. One relatively underdeveloped application of these polynuclear assemblies involves their use as atomically precise, homogenous molecular models for bulk metal oxides. Given the structural and electronic similarities of POVs and extended vanadium oxide materials, as well as the relative ease of modifying the homogenous congeners, investigation of the chemical and physical properties of pristine and modified cluster complexes presents a method toward understanding the influence of structural modifications (e.g. crystal structure/phase, chemical makeup of surface ligands, elemental dopants) on the properties of extended solids. This review summarises recent advances in the use of POV clusters as atomically precise models for bulk metal oxides, with particular focus on the assembly of vanadium oxide clusters and the consequences of altering the molecular composition of the assembly via organofunctionalization and the incorporation of elemental "dopants".

Abstract
The host-guest interaction between a half spherical-type dodecavanadate (V12) and a neutral molecule guest was evaluated by monitoring the flip of a VO5 unit caused by the presence or absence of a guest in the cavity of V12. In N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), V12 adopted the guest-free form (V12-free). By the addition of several guest molecules, such as acetonitrile, nitromethane, and dichloromethane, the structural conversion to the guest-inserted form (V12(guest)) was observed with the affinity constants of 137 ± 10 M-1, 0.14 ± 0.1 M-1, and 0.15 ± 0.1 M-1, respectively. In the case of 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dibromoethane, and 1,2-diiodoethane, the constants were 35 ± 5 M-1, 114 ± 5 M-1, and 2.1 ± 0.5 M-1, respectively, suggesting that the bromo group is the best fit to the cavity of the bowl. A cyclic carbonate, 5- and 6-membered lactones, cyclobutanone, and hexanal were inserted into the V12 host, while a non-cyclic carbonate, non-cyclic and 7-membered cyclic ester, a ketone with a 5-membered ring, and benzaldehyde showed no effect on the guest insertion. The V12 host preferred to hold a guest with an electron-rich group, and the bowl-type structure showed the unique shape-selective interaction with the guest.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) are an intriguing class of compounds due to their tremendous structural variety and the wide spectrum of resulting properties, which make them interesting for applications in fields such as catalysis, material science or nanotechnology. Their ability to form large supramolecular architectures by self-assembly offers an entry to complex, functional systems. After an introduction into the structure and synthesis of POMs of the early transition metals, recently discovered water-soluble antimonato polyoxovanadates (Sb-POVs) and the investigation of their chemical reactivity are discussed. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is presented as an analytical technique suitable to investigate the structure of complex POM assemblies in solution and to probe the underlying reactivity and formation mechanisms. This Minireview highlights the first studies on the soluble Sb-POVs and how the knowledge of their reactivity obtained by ESI-MS has fostered the syntheses of numerous novel Sb-POV compounds.

Abstract
The chemistry of vanadium has seen remarkable activity in the past 50 years. In the present review, reactions catalyzed by homogeneous and supported vanadium complexes from 2008 to 2018 are summarized and discussed. Particular attention is given to mechanistic and kinetics studies of vanadium-catalyzed reactions including oxidations of alkanes, alkenes, arenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur species, as well as oxidative C-C and C-O bond cleavage, carbon-carbon bond formation, deoxydehydration, haloperoxidase, cyanation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, ring-opening metathesis polymerization, and oxo/imido heterometathesis. Additionally, insights into heterogeneous vanadium catalysis are provided when parallels can be drawn from the homogeneous literature.
