Magnesium Stung by Nonclassical Scorpionate Ligands: Synthesis and Cone-Angle Calculations

Reactivity of a Neutral Yttrium(III) Trimethyl Complex toward Brønsted and Lewis Acids

The present study corroborates that the neutral tridentate N-ligand 1,4,7-trimethyl-triazacyclononane (Me3TACN) qualifies as a versatile platform to study selective ligand exchange with rare-earth-metal alkyl complexes, herein [(Me3TACN)YMe3]. Treatment with Brønsted-acidic bis(dimethylsilyl)amine, HN(SiHMe2)2, gave selectively the mono-exchanged heteroleptic complex [(Me3TACN)YMe2{N(SiHMe2)2}]. Depending on the molecular ratio employed, the reaction of [(Me3TACN)YMe3] with AlMe3 resulted in the isolation/crystallization of [(Me3TACN)YMe2(AlMe4)] [1 : 1] or ion-separated [(Me3TACN)YMe(AlMe4)][AlMe4] [1 : 2] and [(Me3TACN)YMe(AlMe4)][Al2Me7] [1 : 3]. Analogous reactions with the heavier group 13 methyls GaMe3 and InMe3 generated mixed methyl/tetramethylgallato complex [(Me3TACN)YMe2(GaMe4)] and ion-separated [{(Me3TACN)YMe2}2{μ-Me}][InMe4]. Finally, dimethylalane, HAlMe2, converted [(Me3TACN)YMe3] into heteroaluminate [(Me3TACN)Y(HAlMe3)3], representing an AlMe3-supported, molecular yttrium trihydride complex. All compounds were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), homo- and heteronuclear (13C, 27Al, 89Y, 115In) NMR as well as IR spectroscopies and elemental analyses.

Rare-Earth-Metal Methyl and Methylidene Complexes Stabilized by TpR,R'-Scorpionato Ligands─Size Matters

Homoleptic tetramethylaluminates Ln(AlMe4)3 react with KTptBu,Me (TptBu,Me = tris(3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolyl)borato) to yield rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd). The lanthanum reaction is prone to additional C-H- and B-N-bond activation, affording coproducts La[HB(pzMe,tBu)(pzCMe2,Me)2][(μ-CH2)(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 and [La(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (pztBu,Me = 3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolato). The protonolysis reaction of Ln(AlMe4)3 and HpztBu,Me provides more efficient access to [Ln(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (Ln = La, Nd). Treatment of Ln(AlMe4)3 with KTpMe,Me led to methylidene complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = Nd, Sm) or bis(tetramethylaluminate) complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(AlMe4)2 (Ln = Y, Lu). The neodymium reaction generated methine derivative (TpMe,Me)Nd[(μ4-CH)(AlMe2)2(μ-pz,Me,Me)][(μ-Me)AlMe2] as a minor coproduct. The reaction of Ln(GaMe4)3 (Ln = Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Ho) with HTptBu,Me gave methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)GaMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm) and alkyl complexes (TptBu,Me)LnMe[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho), while competing B-N bond activation reactions produced GaMe2[BH(Me)(μ-pztBu,Me)2] and (TptBu,Me)Ln(η2-pztBu,Me)[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho). The steric impact of the TpR,Me ligands was examined by cone angle calculations. Rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)EMe2]2 (E = Al, Ga) successfully promote carbonyl methylenation reactions upon addition of ketone.

Structural Investigation of Magnesium Complexes Supported by a Thiopyridyl Scorpionate Ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of heteroleptic magnesium complexes stabilized with the scorpionate ligand tris(2-pyridylthio)methanide (Tptm). The compounds of the general formula [Mg(Tptm)(X)] (1-X; X = Cl, Br, I) were obtained via protonolysis reaction between the proligand and selected Grignard reagents. Attempts to isolate the potassium derivative K(Tptm) lead to decomposition of Tptm and formation of the alkene (C₅H₄N-S)₂C=C(C₅H₄N-S)₂, and this degradation was also modelled using DFT methods. Compound 1-I was treated with K(CH₂Ph), affording the degradation product [Mg(Bptm)₂] (2; Bptm = {CH(S-C₅NH₃)₂}⁻). We analyzed and quantified the steric properties of the Tptm ligand using the structural information of the compounds obtained in this study paired with buried volume calculations, also adding the structural data of HTptm and its CF₃-substituted congener (HTptm^CF3). These studies highlight the highly flexible nature of this ligand scaffold and its ability to stabilize various coordination motifs and geometries, which is a highly desirable feature in the design of novel organometallic reagents and catalysts.

The Dimethylbismuth Cation: Entry Into Dative Bi-Bi Bonding and Unconventional Methyl Exchange

The isolation of simple, fundamentally important, and highly reactive organometallic compounds remains among the most challenging tasks in synthetic chemistry. The detailed characterization of such compounds is key to the discovery of novel bonding scenarios and reactivity. The dimethylbismuth cation, [BiMe2 (SbF6 )] (1), has been isolated and characterized. Its reaction with BiMe3 gives access to an unprecedented dative bond, a Bi→Bi donor-acceptor interaction. The exchange of methyl groups (arguably the simplest hydrocarbon moiety) between different metal atoms is among the most principal types of reactions in organometallic chemistry. The reaction of 1 with BiMe3 enables an SE 2(back)-type methyl exchange, which is, for the first time, investigated in detail for isolable, (pseudo-)homoleptic main-group compounds.

Lanthanide Cerium(III) Tris(pyrazolyl)borate Complexes: Efficient Blue Emitters for Doublet Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have had commercial success in displays and lighting. Compared to red and green OLEDs, blue OLEDs are still the bottleneck because the high-energy and long-lived triplet exciton in traditional blue OLEDs causes the short operational lifetime of the device. As a new type emitter, lanthanide complexes with a 5d-4f transition could have short excited-state lifetimes on the order of nanoseconds. To achieve a high-efficiency 5d-4f transition, we systematically tuned the steric and electronic effects of tripodal tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and drew a full picture of their Ce(III) complexes. Intriguingly, all of these complexes show bright blue emission with high photoluminescence quantum yields exceeding 95% and short decay lifetimes of 35-73 ns both in the solid powder and in dichloromethane solutions. Using the Ce(III) complex emitter, we show a blue OLED with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.1% and a maximum luminance of 33,160 cd m^-2, and the specific electroluminescence mechanism of direct exciton formation on the Ce(III) ion with a near-unity exciton utilization efficiency is also confirmed. The discovered photoluminescence and electroluminescence property-structure relationships may shed new light on the rational design of highly efficient lanthanide-based blue emitters and their optoelectronic devices such as OLEDs.

Potential Precursors for Terminal Methylidene Rare-Earth-Metal Complexes Supported by a Superbulky Tris(pyrazolyl)borato Ligand

A series of solvent-free heteroleptic terminal rare-earth-metal alkyl complexes stabilized by a superbulky tris(pyrazolyl)borato ligand with the general formula [TptBu,Me LnMeR] have been synthesized and fully characterized. Treatment of the heterobimetallic mixed methyl/tetramethylaluminate compounds [TptBu,Me LnMe(AlMe4 )] (Ln=Y, Lu) with two equivalents of the mild halogenido transfer reagents SiMe3 X (X=Cl, I) gave [TptBu,Me LnX2 ] in high yields. The addition of only one equivalent of SiMe3 Cl to [TptBu,Me LuMe(AlMe4 )] selectively afforded the desired mixed methyl/chloride complex [TptBu,Me LuMeCl]. Further reactivity studies of [TptBu,Me LuMeCl] with LiR or KR (R=CH2 Ph, CH2 SiMe3 ) through salt metathesis led to the monomeric mixed-alkyl derivatives [TptBu,Me LuMe(CH2 SiMe3 )] and [TptBu,Me LuMe(CH2 Ph)], respectively, in good yields. The SiMe4 elimination protocols were also applicable when using SiMe3 X featuring more weakly coordinating moieties (here X=OTf, NTf2 ). X-ray structure analyses of this diverse set of new [TptBu,Me LnMeR/X] compounds were performed to reveal any electronic and steric effects of the varying monoanionic ligands R and X, including exact cone-angle calculations of the tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borato ligand. Deeper insights into the reactivity of these potential precursors for terminal alkylidene rare-earth-metal complexes were gained through NMR spectroscopic studies.

An Example of Polynomial Expansion: The Reaction of 3(5)-Methyl-1H-Pyrazole with Chloroform and Characterization of the Four Isomers

The reaction in phase-transfer catalyzed conditions of 3(5)-methyl-1H-pyrazole with chloroform affords four isomers 333, 335, 355 and 555 in proportions corresponding to the polynomial expansion (a + b)³, with a = 0.6 and b = 0.4, a and b being 3-methyl and 5-methyl proportions. The up (u) and down (d) conformation of the pyrazolyl rings with regard to the Csp³–H atom was established by X-ray crystallography and by ¹H-, ¹³C- and ¹⁵N-NMR in solution combined with gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAO)/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations. A comparison with other X-ray structures of tris-pyrazolylmethanes was carried out.
