Uncovering employment outcomes for autistic university graduates in the United Kingdom: An analysis of population data

LAY ABSTRACT

International research suggests that more autistic people are entering higher education. Currently, very little is known about this group in the United Kingdom, for example, we have little information about how many autistic people enrol at UK-based higher education institutions, their backgrounds, the academic programmes they study and what they do once they have graduated. Our study tries to explore these issues by comparing outcomes between autistic students, other disabled students and non-disabled students. We use population data collected by the Higher Education Statistical Agency in the United Kingdom, which included 1,326,416 graduates across the years 2012-2018. Our findings indicate that the degree subjects studied at university by autistic students are more diverse than often people think. We also found that graduates go on to work in a range of employment sectors following graduation but often experience worse outcomes in terms of access to full-time work and worse pay. We argue that universities and colleges must focus greater attention on developing better employment transition support for autistic students and graduates.

Expectations of employers in the United States for entry-level public health job skills with a bachelor's degree: an analysis of the positions advertised in an online job portal

Objectives

To analyze the current public health labor market for bachelor's-level graduates.

Methods

Public health-related job postings (N = 365) from across the United States were collected from an online job portal, Indeed.com, from November 7-14, 2022. Job titles, organization type, degree requirements, work experience, job location, and preferred skills for bachelor's-level public health positions were analyzed.

Results

Thirty-one job titles were identified. Approximately one-third (32.33%) of postings were from the Northeastern US; 23.56% were from the Southeastern region. Thirty-five job skill categories were identified. Most jobs (92.33%) required oral and written communication skills, and 85.21% specified educational skills for public health promotion. Cultural competency, project management, and case management abilities were also highly sought.

Conclusion

This study revealed the needs of the public health workforce and bolstered the case that public health degree-seekers should be equipped with a set of strategic skills applicable to a range of multisectoral and multidisciplinary public health jobs.

Policy implications

Given the rapid changes in the field of public health, ongoing analysis of the labor market benefits educators, employers, and policymakers alike.

Experiences Shared by the (Future) Public Health Workforce during the COVD-19 Pandemic in Germany: Results of a Survey on Workload, Work Content, and Related Challenges among Students and Young Professionals

Although previous studies have focused on the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on various professional groups (particularly in the health and nursing care sector), this study aims to close a research gap by assessing perspectives of students and young professionals in epidemiology and public health in Germany in terms of shifts in workload, work content, and related challenges caused by the pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional survey between mid-February and mid-March 2022. Quantitative data were analyzed via standardized mean differences. Qualitative data based on answers to open-ended questions were analyzed via a qualitative content analysis. Overall, 172 individuals participated in this survey. Results indicate that students felt burdened the most by lack of exchange with other students and lecturers. Study participants employed in public health experienced changes in their employment because they had changes in their work content- and administration, which was accompanied by a high burden due to the workload. Multiple demands that can have an impact on both acquired skills and mental health during the professional qualification phase were mentioned by the participants. Therefore, more in-depth analyses are needed to investigate the impact the pandemic will have on the (future) public health workforce in the long run.

The predicting effects of professional governance and structural empowerment on job satisfaction among Jordanian nurses: A cross-sectional study

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the role of professional governance and empowerment in predicting nurses' job satisfaction.

BACKGROUND

Nurses can lead the way to enhance health care quality for all if they work in safe, satisfying and empowering environments. Professional governance and structural empowerment are associated with favourable work conditions and environments. However, studies addressing the predicting effects of professional governance and structural empowerment on job satisfaction are still limited.

METHODS

A cross-sectional design was applied. Online self-reported questionnaires were completed by 126 nurses. The analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, Pearson r correlation and hierarchical multiple regression to address the research aim.

RESULTS

Job satisfaction moderately correlated with structural empowerment (r = .40, p < .001) and professional governance (r = .30, p < .001). The final regression model revealed that 30% of the variation in job performance scores can be predicted by professional governance, structural empowerment and some demographic characteristics (R²  = .30, F = 8.67, p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

Working in an environment that incorporates empowerment conditions, genuine support and valuable opportunities will increase the nurse's job satisfaction. Additionally, nurses will have higher job satisfaction if they have their voices heard.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Nurse managers should properly assess the existing situation in each institution, implement already-tested-for-effectiveness and efficiency interventions and create new ones based on nurses'-specific needs.
