Abstract
Boron(III) complexation was investigated in a series of β-substituted porphycenes. Unlike meso-arylporphycenes, these macrocycles undergo a facile complexation reaction. Upon fusion of the β,β'-positions of the porphycene ligand, the complexation resulted in fast insertion of boron, forming the cisoid-B2OF2 complex. However, in the case of the other β-substituted porphycenes, only bis-BF2 complexes formed. The effect of these substituents on the core geometry and photophysical properties are elaborated here.

Abstract
Dinaphthoporphycene (DNP) has emerged as a versatile ligand undergoing large out-of-plane distortion to form a cis-bimetallic complex with Pd(II) using Pd(OAc)2 and out-of-plane monometallic complexes with Pd(acac)2 and PtCl2(PhCN)2. Herein, we are finally able to synthesize the in-core complex with Pd(II) using PdCl2(PhCN)2 or PdCl2. The crystal structure shows the palladium ion resides slightly above the N4-core, with the Pd(II) dimensionally dissenting with the typical square planarity displayed by the reported in-core DNP complexes with Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions. The deformed complex displays a blue shift in the absorption spectra compared to DNP and its metallo-derivatives. PdDNP exhibits a moderate singlet oxygen generation ability (18%).

Abstract
Directly investigating hydrogen bond (HB) dynamics in molecular materials is a challenging task. Here, we report a set of porphyrin isomers, porphycenes, that visualize slight changes on the order of picometers in the intramolecular HB dynamics. Intramolecular HBs of porphycenes were regulated by the systematic modification at meso positions with methyl (Me), cyclopentyl (Cy5), and cyclohexyl (Cy6) moieties. Notably, the quantum yields varied from 35 to 0.04% in chloroform, depending on a slight distortion in the porphycene framework. SC-XRD, XPS, and NMR clearly revealed that the Me and Cy6 moieties increased the nonradiative deactivation by strengthening the intramolecular NH···N HBs whereas Cy5 retained their photoluminescence properties. This is the first example of how the distortion of planar porphyrinoids at the picometer level along with the strength of the intramolecular NH···N HBs can drastically affect their optical properties. The results revealed new avenues of HB engineering based on porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Porphycene, a porphyrin isomer, is an efficient fluorophore. However, four-fold meso substitution with alkyl groups decreases the fluorescence quantum yield by orders of magnitude. For aryl substituents, this effect is small. To explain this difference, we have synthesized and studied a mixed aryl-alkyl-substituted compound, 9,20-diphenyl-10,19-dimethylporphycene, as well as the 9,20-diphenyl and 9,20-dimethyl derivatives. Analysis of the structural, spectroscopic, and photophysical data of the six porphycenes, combined with quantum chemical calculations, shows a clear correlation between the strength of the intramolecular NH⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds and the efficiency of the radiationless depopulation of the lowest-excited singlet state. This result led us to propose a model in which the delocalization of the inner protons in the cavity of the macrocycle is responsible for the nonradiative deactivation channel. The applicability of the model is confirmed by the literature data for other alkyl- or aryl-substituted porphycenes. The finding of a correlation between structural and emissive characteristics enables a rational design of porphycenes with desired photophysical properties.

Abstract
We have introduced the first 3,6,13,16-tetrasubstituted porphycene as its tetramethoxy analogue. This substitution pattern is one of the most general patterns yet missing in this isomeric porphyrin chemistry. This porphycene exhibits intense fluorescence along with the ability to coordinate with divalent metal ions; in particular, it forms the first stable Zn(II) complex among the tetrasubstituted porphycenes. Notably, the molecular structure of Zn1•Py displays supramolecular chirality.

Abstract
Two porphycenes, substituted at the meso positions with two and four methyl groups, respectively, reveal similar absorption spectra, but their photophysical properties are completely different. 9,20-dimethylporphycene emits fluorescence with about 20% quantum yield, independent of the solvent. In contrast, fluorescence of 9,10,19,20-tetramethylporphycene is extremely weak in nonviscous solvents, but it can be recovered by placing the chromophore in a rigid environment. We propose a model that explains these differences, based on calculations and structural analogies with other extremely weakly emitting derivatives, dibenzo[cde, mno]porphycenes. The efficient S1 deactivation involves delocalization of two inner cavity protons coupled with proton translocation toward a high-energy cis tautomer. The latter process leads to distortion from planarity. The probability of deactivation increases with the strength of the intramolecular NH···N hydrogen bonds. The model also explains the observation of biexponential fluorescence decay in weakly emitting porphycenes. It can be extended to other derivatives, in particular, the asymmetrically substituted ones. We also point to the possibility of using specific porphycenes as viscosity sensors, in particular, when working in single molecule regime.

Abstract
Tautomerization in porphycenes, constitutional isomers of porphyrins, is strongly entangled with spectral and photophysical parameters. The intramolecular double hydrogen transfer occurring in the ground and electronically excited states leads to uncommon spectroscopic characteristics, such as depolarized emission, viscosity-dependent radiationless depopulation, and vibrational-mode-specific tunneling splittings. This review starts with documentation of the electronic spectra of porphycenes: Absorption and magnetic circular dichroism are discussed, together with their analysis based on the perimeter model. Next, photophysical characteristics are presented, setting the stage for the final part, which discusses the developments in research on tautomerism. Porphycenes have been studied in different experimental regimes: molecules in condensed phases, isolated in supersonic jets and helium nanodroplets, and, recently also on the level of single molecules investigated by optical and scanning probe microscopies. Because of the rich and detailed information obtained from these diverse investigations, porphycenes emerge as very good models for studying the complex, multidimensional phenomena involved in the process of intramolecular double hydrogen transfer.

Abstract
An unprecedented cis-bimetallic complex of dinaphthoporphycene (DNP), namely [Pd2(μ-DNP)(μ-OAc)2], is reported. The most striking feature of this complex is that two palladiums coordinate to the macrocycle on the same side and are closely held together (Pd-Pd: 2.67 Å) by two bridging acetate ligands exhibiting significant metal-metal bonding interaction (bond order 0.18 evaluated by NBO analysis). Interestingly, replacing acetate with acetylacetonate (acac) could stabilize an unusual mono-palladium complex of DNP, where Pd coordinates unsymmetrically to two ring Ns above the macrocyclic plane, as well as coordinating with two Os of the acac ligand. Remarkably, the rigid DNP core displays enhanced complexation induced aromaticity (as per NICS and HOMA analysis), despite undergoing severe core deformation during complexation with metal ion(s) as noticed from their solid-state structures.

Abstract
A series of benzoporphycenes and naphthoporphycenes and their zinc complexes were prepared from bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene fused porphycenes by a retro-Diels-Alder reaction and their photophysical properties were studied. Free-base tetranaphthoporphycene was not soluble in common organic solvents, but zinc tetranaphthoporphycene was slightly soluble in pyridine and showed B- and Q-bands at 507 and 690 nm, respectively. Dinaphthoporphycene showed broad B- and Q-bands due to its lower symmetry. Tetrabenzo-, dibenzo-, and dinaphthoporphycenes showed fluorescence at 673, 654, and 670 nm with quantum yields of 0.32, 0.42, and 0.31, respectively, although their precursors were non-fluorescent. Zinc complexes of tetrabenzo-, dibenzo-, tetranaphtho-, dinaphthoporphycenes and their bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene-fused precursors revealed moderate fluorescence with quantum yields of 0.15–0.37. The crystal structures of tetrabenzo- and dibenzoporphycenes showed herringbone structures, while the zinc tetrabenzoporphycene showed a hexagonal box-structure with six pyridine ligands inside.

Abstract
Unsubstituted porphycene was prepared in 65% yield from 2,7,12,17-tetra-tert-butylporphycene. Taking into account the yield of the substrate, this represents more than a five-fold improvement compared to the methodology used to date. Enhanced availability of the parent porphycene may be exploited in synthetic procedures based on derivatization of the unsubstituted compound.

Abstract
The X-ray structure, electrochemistry, and optical spectroscopy of the porphycene analog of a benzochlorin, octaethylbenzochloracene (OEBzC) are reported. The OEBzC macrocycle is easier to oxidize and harder to reduce than octaethylporphycene (OEPc). The optical spectra of OEBzC and of the diacid salt are also reported. The optical spectrum for the one-electron oxidation of OEBzC is indicative of π-cation radical formation. In porphyrins, saturation of one pyrrole ring and addition of an exocyclic benzene ring progressively red-shifts the first absorption band. For porphycenes, saturation of one pyrrole ring results in a 35 nm blue shift in the first absorption relative to OEPc. Compared to 2,3-dihydroporphycene (DHPc), the first absorption band in OEBzC is red-shifted 24 nm. These studies further illustrate how the fused exocyclic benzene ring influences the macrocycle conformation, chemical and physical properties of porphycenes.

Abstract
The need for new photodynamic-therapy photosensitizers has stimulated the search of new families of compounds absorbing strongly in the 700-900 nm range, the region where tissue is most transparent to radiation capable to induce the photodynamic effect. Using computational chemistry techniques, 3,6,13,16-tetraazaporphycenes were previously identified as interesting target candidates. This work reports on the photophysical and electrochemical properties of selected members of this new family of macrocycles. Compared to porphycenes, the tetra-aza counterparts show stronger absorption in the near-infrared, lower-lying singlet and triplet excited states, and substantially larger internal conversion quantum yield (Phi(IC) = 0.93). Energy transfer to oxygen is observed, which results in the formation of the cytotoxic species singlet oxygen. The process is found to be reversible, consistent with a triplet-energy value close to that of singlet oxygen.

Abstract
Laser-induced fluorescence and dispersed fluorescence spectra measured in supersonic jets for 9,10,19,20-tetra-n-methylporphycene and 9,10,19,20-tetra-n-propylporphycene reveal, for both compounds, the presence of two different species which are assigned to trans and cis tautomeric forms. Doublet splitting of lines is observed, disappearing upon deuteration of the inner nitrogen atoms. This finding is interpreted as an indication of double hydrogen tunneling. The values of tunneling splitting are obtained for both ground and lowest singlet excited states. The splitting is similar for cis and trans forms, and the barrier for tautomerization is larger in the excited state. Due to the coupling of hydrogen motion with rotation of alkyl substituents, tautomerization occurs in an asymmetric double minimum potential, with the ordering of energy minima reversed upon excitation. The second singlet excited state is found to lie very close to S(1), thus facilitating an efficient radiationless depopulation.
