Recent Advances in Multicolor Emission and Color Tuning of Heteroleptic Iridium Complexes

All-Solution-Processed Multilayered White Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes (WPLEDs) Based on Cross-Linked [Ir(4-vb-PBI)2(acac)]

All-solution-processed multilayered white polymer light-emitting diodes (WPLEDs) are promising candidates for low-cost and large-area flexible full-color flat-panel displays and solid-state lighting. However, it is still challenging to improve their performance. In this work, based on an elegant strategy of orthogonal materials, the utilization of the cross-linked Ir³⁺ polymer film poly(NVK-co-[Ir(4-vb-PBI)₂(acac)]-co-NVK) (NVK = N-vinyl-carbazole; 4-vb-HPBI = 1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole; and Hacac = acetylacetone) as the emitting layer (EML) between a hydrophilic polymer film poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the hole injection layer (HIL) and a hydrophobic polymer film poly(vinyl-PBD) (vinyl-PBD = 2-(4-(tert-butyl)phenyl)-5-(4'-vinyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-2,5-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazole) as the electron transport layer (ETL) led to the successful fabrication of reliable all-solution-processed multilayered WPLEDs. The device exhibits a η_CE^Max of 18.19 cd/A, a η_PE^Max of 8.16 lm/W, and a η_EQE^Max of 9.32% with stable white light (Commission International De L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates x = 0.269-0.283, y = 0.317-0.330; corrected color temperatures (CCTs) of 7237-8199 K, and CRIs (color rendering indices) of 63-72) under a wide applied-voltage range. Its high performance, especially with record efficiencies among those of reported all-solution-processed WPLEDs, renders cross-linked Ir³⁺ polymers a new platform to all-solution-processed multilayered WPLEDs.

Design of Conjugated Molecules Presenting Short-Wavelength Luminescence by Utilizing Heavier Atoms of the Same Element Group

The introduction of heavy atoms into conjugated molecules often induces a redshift in the emission spectra. Conversely, we report here a blueshifting effect in the absorption and emission bands of a conjugated organic dye by employing a heavier atom from the same element group. Boron complexes having oxygen- and sulfur-bridged structures in the ligand moiety were synthesized, and their optical properties were compared. Significant optical bands in the absorption and luminescence spectra of the sulfur-bridged complex were observed in a shorter wavelength region than those of the oxygen-bridged complex. Theoretical calculations suggest that replacement of the bridging atom by a heavier one should reduce molecular planarity because of the larger atom size. As a result, the degree of electronic conjugation decreases, and this is followed by a blueshift in the optical bands. Finally, a blue-emissive crystal is demonstrated.

Intrinsic triple-emitting 2D copper thiolate coordination polymer as a ratiometric thermometer working over 400 K range

A new lamellar, [Cu(p-SPhCO₂Me)]_n, coordination polymer exhibits intrinsic triple emission with great potential as optical thermometer working over 400 K range and up to 500 K.

Phosphorescent Platinum(II) Complexes with C∧C* Cyclometalated NHC Ligands

This Account describes our achievements toward the development of a new class of platinum(II) complexes with interesting photophysical properties. The general motif of a strongly donating N-heterocyclic carbene with a cyclometalating phenyl group attached to the nitrogen atom together with β-diketonate based counterligands enabled us to synthesize a new class of phosphorescent emitters for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This Account is divided into sections and introduces imidazolium based as well as triazolium based structures and discusses the effects of structural changes on the photophysical properties. Starting from the basic methylated (substituted) phenylimidalium presursors, we initially extended the π-system of the phenyl ring to the dibenzofuran ligand, its regioisomer, and thio-derivative. As the substituents of the β-diketonate ligands turned out to have a strong influence on the photophysical properties (higher quantum yields as well as shorter decay times) a series of dibenzofuranyl-3-methylimidazol as well as diphenylbenzimidazol platinum complexes were synthesized to investigate the different steric and electronic effects, which are described in a separate section. The next section of the Account then describes other extensions of the π-system. Exchange of the methyl group against a phenyl ring, as well as the extension of the π-system in the backbone of the NHC-ligand lead to a significant improvement of the photophysical properties, which reached a maximum for the diphenylbenzimidazole (DPBIC) system. Further extension of the π-system to the diphenylnaphthylimidazol then lead to a unfavorable long decay time. The effect of substitution is discussed for cyano groups, which change the electronic situation and lead to highly emissive complexes. We are currently working on studying the effect of other substituents on the photophysical properties, as well as the introduction of additional heteroatoms into the general motif. Our initial work in that area had been on 1,2,4-triazole complexes. For the basic phenyl/methyl substituted system, two different isomers are accessible, the 4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazoles as well as the 1-phenyl-1H-1,2,4 triazoles. It was interesting to note that the photophysical properties of the corresponding complexes are strongly dependent on the substituent R of the β-diketonate ligand. For R = methyl, the properties are significantly different, while we found almost identical photophysical results for R = mesityl for both 1,2,4-triazole isomers. The last section describes the synthesis of bimetallic complexes. To investigate whether it is possible to cyclometalate twice into the same phenyl ring, we synthesized dicationic NHC precursors from para- and meta-disubstituted bis(imidazole)benzenes. The bimetallic complexes show interesting photophysical properties with quantum yields of up to 93%. All experimental work was accompanied by quantum chemical calculations, which turned out to be very useful for the prediction of the emission wavelengths as well as the interpretation of the emissive states of the platinum complexes.

Photoswitchable azobenzene-appended iridium(iii) complexes

The use of aliphatic-bridging units to append azobenzene fragments on triscyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes permits the construction of photoswitchable organometallics.

Unusual product distribution from Friedländer reaction of di- and triacetylbenzenes with 3-aminonaphthalene-3-carbaldehyde and properties of new benzo[g]quinoline-derived aza-aromatics

The Friedländer reactions of acetylbenzenes and 2-acetylpyridine with 3-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde afforded the corresponding 2-phenylbenzo[g]quinoline and 2-(pyrid-2-yl)benzo[g]quinoline, respectively. The same reactions of 3-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde with 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-di- and 1,3,5-triacetylbenzenes, however, afforded a series of corresponding (benzo[g]quinolin-2-yl)benzenes as new N,C-bidentate and unexpected benzo[g]quinoline. Crystallinity, thermal properties, absorption and emission spectral properties of the products were studied.
