Organic-inorganic hybrid fluorous monolithic capillary column for selective solid-phase microextraction of perfluorinated persistent organic pollutants

N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide/divinyl benzene based-highly cross-linked hybrid monolithic column: Production and its applications for powerful capture of four chlorophenols

In this paper, the role of the halogen bond in capillary monolithic column microextraction was explored for the first time. Benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide (BTH) was synthesized as a functional monomer, N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and divinyl benzene (DVB) were used as cross-linking agents, the hybrid monolithic column of poly (BTH-co-DVB-co-MBA) was prepared using methanol and polyethylene glycol as pore-forming agents and azodiisobutyronitrile as the initiator. Due to the existence of BTH, a large number of nitrogen atoms (Lewis base) were introduced into the monolithic column, which could form a halogen bond with chlorine-containing organic pollutants and enhance its adsorption performance. Based on the monolithic column, a sensitive and environment-friendly solid-phase microextraction technology was studied. The monolithic column was integrated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to extract and detect four kinds of chlorophenol in real water samples. Under best conditions, the method showed excellent extraction ability and linearity, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.9958-0.9987, a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.04-0.23 μg L^-1 (S/N = 3), and relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 3.09%. The recovery rate was kept between 87.30% and 123.00%, and the RSD was less than 3.83%, which indicated that the column had powerful capture performance, high precision, and strong anti-matrix interference ability in the real sample, and had potential application value in practical work.

Application of magnetic carbon nanotube composite nanospheres in magnetic solid-phase extraction of trace perfluoroalkyl substances from environmental water samples

The layer-by-layer assembly technique was used to synthesize novel multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on magnetic carbon (Fe₃O₄@C) nanospheres, which were then used to extract six perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental real water samples using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The as-synthesized sorbent MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C was employed for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The as-prepared MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The main extraction parameters were systematically optimized by Box-Behnken design. Under optimal conditions, excellent results were achieved. The synthesized sorbent showed wide linear ranges (0.1-1000 ng L^-1), low detection limits (0.03-0.09 ng L^-1) and good repeatability (3.80%-9.52%) for extracting and detecting six PFAS. The developed method was also applied to analyze six PFAS from environmental water samples. This study indicated that MWCNTs@Fe₃O₄@C composites are promising materials for the extraction and determination of PFAS from water samples.

Superhydrophobic fluorinated microspheres for fluorous affinity chromatography

Fluorous affinity chromatography has received growing attention in separation and purification of fluoro compounds, but the wettability of the fluorinated stationary phases is seldom noticed. Here, we construct a series of micro-sized fluorine-containing microspheres by solvothermal precipitation polymerization. The fluorinated microspheres could be obtained with narrow size distribution at even high monomer loading of 15 wt%. Through alternating fluoro monomer, both the particle size and the wettability of the microsphere array could be tuned. Among them, the poly(divinylbenzene -dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate), P(DVB-DFHMA), microsphere (6.1 μm) arrays displays superhydrophobicity with 153.2° water contact angle. The P(DVB-DFHMA) fluorinated microspheres (7.58% fluorine content) can be packed into steel-less columns as stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. The retention mechanism of the fluorinated column is proven to be the specific fluorine-fluorine interaction. Compared to the commercial C18 silica column, the fluorinated column can completely separate fluorine-containing compounds under high water content mobile phase, including small fluoro molecules and fluoro macromolecules, at much lower back pressure by fluorous affinity.

Analysis of fluorinated compounds by micellar electrokinetic chromatography - mass spectrometry

Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) is a good separation technique with high efficiency, high selectivity and simple preparation process. Hyphenation of MEKC with mass spectrometry (MS) could extend its application in complex sample analysis. However, direct coupling MEKC using commonly used surfactants like sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with ESI-MS will lead to strong signal suppression. In this work, a MEKC-MS method using volatile ammonium perfluorooctanoate as surfactant was developed. The MS compatibility of ammonium perfluorooctanoate was investigated. The result revealed that there is no signal suppression even the concentration of ammonium perfluorooctanoate was up to 300 mM. Meanwhile, we found that ammonium perfluorooctanoate used as surfactant in MEKC provided powerful F-F interaction and hydrophobic interaction, which was beneficial for separation of fluorinated compounds. Using the ammonium perfluorooctanoate based MEKC method, several groups of fluorinated compounds, which cannot be separated using non-fluorinated surfactants like lauric acid and SDS based MEKC method, were baseline separated. Finally, the MEKC-ESI-MS method was successfully applied for analysis of two herbicides including fluometuron and fenuron in lake water samples with high separation efficiency, high sensitivity, good linearity and reproducibility.

Research progress on the removal of hazardous perfluorochemicals: A review

Perfluorinated substances are global and ubiquitous pollutants. The persistent organic pollution of perfluorochemicals (PFCs) have drawn attentions worldwide. In view of the current need for sustainable development, many researchers began to study the remediation techniques for PFCs. Due to its unique hydrophobic and oil-phobic characteristics, the requirements for the PFCs removal process are different, so that their remediation techniques are still under continuous exploration. Hence, this review summarized the removal behaviors of various PFCs on different materials which supply a good foundation for future investigations in this field. It is evident from previous literature that every remediation techniques for PFCs has its own advantages. Among various currently evaluated removal methods, adsorption seems to be one of the most commonly used and recognized techniques for PFCs pollution control. Other innovative and promising techniques, such as physical and/or chemical methods, have also been tested for their effectiveness in removing perfluorinated compounds.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of perfluorinated compounds on various adsorbents--a review

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have drawn great attention recently due to their wide distribution in aquatic environments and potential toxic to animals and human beings. Adsorption not only is an effective technology to remove PFCs from water or wastewater, but also affects PFC distribution at solid-liquid interfaces and their fate in aquatic environments. This article reviews the adsorption behavior of different PFCs (mainly perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate) on various adsorptive materials. Some effective adsorbents are introduced in detail in terms of their preparation, characteristics, effects of solution chemistry and PFC properties on adsorption. Adsorption mechanisms of PFCs on different adsorbents are summarized, and various interactions including electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, ligand exchange, and hydrogen bond are fully reviewed. The adsorbents with amine groups generally have high adsorption capacity for PFCs, and formation of micelles/hemi-micelles plays an important role in achieving high adsorption capacity of perfluorinated surfactants on some porous adsorbents. Hydrophobic interaction is mainly responsible for PFC adsorption, but the difference between PFCs and traditional hydrocarbons has not clearly clarified. This review paper would be helpful for the preparation of effective adsorbents for PFC removal and understanding interfacial process of PFCs during their transport and fate in aquatic environments.

Monoliths: special issue in a new package

Regular special issues concerning monoliths have always been a stronghold of the Journal of Separation Science. Typically, we issued a call for papers, collected and processed the submitted manuscripts, and all of them were then printed in a single issue of the journal. This approach worked to a certain limit quite acceptably but there was always a longer waiting time between the early submissions and publication. This is why we decided to do it this year differently. I claimed in my 2013 New Years Editorial: "We are living in the electronic era! Why not to make an advantage of that?" And we do. As a result, all manuscript submitted for publication in the special issue Monoliths have already been published in regular issues as soon as they were accepted. The first page of these papers includes a footnote: "This paper is included in the virtual special issue Monoliths available at the Journal of Separation Science website." All papers published with this footnote were collected in a virtual special issue accessible through the internet. This concept ruled out possible delays in publication of contributions submitted early. Since we did not have any real "special issue", there was no need for any hard deadline for submission. We just collected manuscripts submitted for the special issue Monoliths published from January to July 2013 and included them in the virtual special issue. This new approach worked very well and we published 22 excellent papers that are included in the issue available now at this website: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1615-9314/homepage/virtual_special_issue__monoliths.htm.
