Ionic liquid-functionalized mesoporous multipod silica for simultaneously effective extraction of aflatoxin B1 and its two precursors from grain

BACKGROUND

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and its precursors contaminate food and agricultural products, posing a significant risk to food safety and human health, but simultaneous and effective extraction and determination of AFB1 and its precursors with varied structures is still a challenging task.

RESULTS

In this study, a bisimidazolium-type ionic liquid functionalized mesoporous multipod silica (SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2) was fabricated to extract AFB1 and its two precursors, i.e., averantin and sterigmatocystin. The SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 could simultaneously extract three targets with varied structures based on the multipods, mesopores, and multifunctional groups. The density functional theory calculations further verified the multiple interactions between SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 and targets. The fabricated SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 could effectively extract and determine three targets in grains by combing with dispersive solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography. Good linearity (r2 > 0.9978), low LODs (0.9-1.5 μg kg-1) and LOQs (3.0-4.5 μg kg-1), satisfactory spiked recoveries (92.5%-106.8%) and high precisions (RSD<6.4%) were observed.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

This work demonstrates the feasibility of SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 for simultaneous and effective extraction of toxins with varied structures and provides a promising sample preparation for the analysis of AFB1 and its precursors in grain samples.

Effective enrichment and detection of trace polybrominated diphenyl ethers in water samples based on magnetic covalent organic framework nanospheres coupled with chromatography-mass spectrometry

Novel core shell structured magnetic covalent organic frameworks were synthesized at room temperature and first applied in water samples for the enrichment of trace polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) through magnetic solid-phase extraction. The prepared materials were characterized through transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. During adsorption, the parameters affecting extraction and desorption efficiency were further optimized. Combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) revealed that high enrichment factors (275-292), low limits of detection (0.12-0.38 ng·L-1), wide linear ranges (0.5-1000 ng·L-1), and good reproducibility (intra-day 1.40%-4.31% and inter-day 5.14%-9.12%) were obtained under optimal conditions. The method successfully detected PBDEs in different water samples.

Analytical Methodology for Trace Determination of Propoxur and Fenitrothion Pesticide Residues by Decanoic Acid Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles

A sensitive, rapid, reliable, and easily applicable method based on magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) combined with HPLC-PDA was developed for monitoring propoxur (PRO) and fenitrothion (FEN) pesticides in environmental water samples. The effect of major experimental variables on the extraction efficiency of both the pesticides was investigated and optimized systematically. For this purpose, a new magnetic material containing decanoic acid on the surface of particles was synthesized and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, and TGA analysis in detail. The simultaneous determination of pesticide molecules was carried out by using a Luna Omega C18 column, isocratic elution of acetonitrile (ACN): Water (70:30 v/v) with a flow rate of 1.2 mL min^-1. After MSPE, the linear range for pesticide molecules (r² > 0.9982) was obtained in the range of 5-800 and 10-800 ng mL^-1, respectively. The limit of detections (LOD) are 1.43 and 4.71 ng mL^-1 for PRO and FEN, respectively while RSDs % are below 3.5%. The applicability of the proposed method in four different environmental samples were also investigated using a standard addition-recovery procedure. Average recoveries at two spiking levels were over the range of 91.3-102.5% with RSD < 5.0% (n = 3). The obtained results show that decanoic acid grafted magnetic particles in MSPE combined with HPLC-PDA is a fast and simple method for the determination of PRO and FEN in environmental water samples.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics

In this work, magnetic metal-organic frameworks-101 functionalized with graphite-like carbon nitride material (Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101) has been simply prepared for the efficient enrichment of glucocorticoids in cosmetics. Due to the introduction of g-C₃N₄, the water stability of MIL-101 has been greatly improved. This composite material also showed better selectivity for glucocorticoids than those for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene compounds due to the hydrogen bonding effect with g-C₃N₄ and the size-matching effect with MIL-101. When the prepared material was used as the sorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), a sensitive MSPE-UPLC-MS/MS method was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were linear over the concentration ranging from 0.01 to 2 μg/L with correlation coefficients (R²) between 0.9915 and 0.9995. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 2 ng/L with the RSDs lower than 5.5%. The recoveries ranged from 77.3% to 113%. The LOD of glucocorticoids in real samples analysis was improved by nearly three orders of magnitude compared to current literature records. The results indicated that Fe₃O₄/g-C₃N₄/MIL-101 could be used as MSPE extractant to determine glucocorticoids in complex cosmetics matrix.

Facile Preparation of Dual-Shell Novel Covalent-Organic Framework Functionalized Magnetic Nanospheres Used for the Simultaneous Determination of Fourteen Trace Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines in Nonsmokers and Smokers of Cigarettes with Different Tar Yields Based on UPLC-MS/MS

The facile preparation, characterization, and application of novel dual-shell TpBD (a kind of covalent-organic framework) coated magnetic nanospheres as sorbents for simple, fast, and high selectivity capture of 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are reported. Quantum chemistry theory calculations were conducted to directly and quantifiably describe the multiple interactions, including π-π, hydrogen bonding, cation-π, static electricity, and ion-exchange, between TpBD and heterocyclic aromatic amines. The excellent adsorption capacity of TpBD coated magnetic nanospheres was further evaluated by extraction of 14 HAAs from nonsmokers' and smokers' urine samples. Under the optimized conditions, the magnetic solid phase extraction process can be completed with high recovery ranging from 95.4% to 129.3%. After being washed with acetonitrile and water successively, the collected sorbents can be easily recycled and reused five times without any significant difference in performance. Coupled with the ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer detection, the exposure level of HAAs in nonsmokers and smokers smoking cigarettes with different tar yields were successfully explored. And, this implied that the robust method based on the versatile TpBD coated dual-shell magnetic nanospheres sorbents represents a great potential application in the analysis of disease markers and body fluids.

Organic Analysis of Environmental Samples Using Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array and Fluorescence Detectors: An Overview

This overview is focused to provide an useful guide of the families of organic pollutants that can be determined by liquid chromatography operating in reverse phase and ultraviolet/fluorescence detection. Eight families have been classified as the main groups to be considered: carbonyls, carboxyls, aromatics, phenols, phthalates, isocyanates, pesticides and emerging. The references have been selected based on analytical methods used in the environmental field, including both the well-established procedures and those more recently developed.

Magnetic mesoporous nanoparticles modified with poly(ionic liquids) with multi-functional groups for enrichment and determination of pyrethroid residues in apples

Considering that the determination of pyrethroid residues is of value for the safety of food, a new poly(ionic liquid)-functionalized magnetic mesoporous nanoparticle was designed and used as an adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction for the enrichment of eight pyrethroids. The porous structure and large surface area of the mesoporous silica shell endow the adsorbent with abundant binding sites. In contrast to the reported poly(ionic liquids) with only one kind of functional group in the cationic part, the new poly(ionic liquids) with mixed cyano and phenyl groups in cationic part matched the chemical structure of the analytes to improve extraction efficiency. Under the optimum conditions, an effective method was established for the determination of eight pyrethroids in apples. Adsorption equilibrium can be quickly reached in 1 min, greatly decreasing the extraction time. The linearity range was found to be 10-200 ng/g, and the detection limits ranged from 0.24 to 1.99 ng/g. Recoveries of analytes in apple samples ranged from 87.3 to 119.0%, with relative standard deviations varying in the range of 3-21.2% (intraday) and 0.3-15.2% (interday). The results indicate that the proposed method is a good candidate for pyrethroid residues in apple samples.

Determination of Six Macrolide Antibiotics in Chicken Sample by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Based on Solid Phase Extraction

In this paper, a simple and effective method for the determination of six macrolide antibiotics (MACs), including tylosin, tilmicosin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, and kitasamycin, in the chicken sample using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed based on a self-built porous aromatic framework- (PAF-) based solid phase sorbent. The main parameters influencing the extraction efficiency, such as sorbent amounts, type of the eluent, pH of the sample, and the eluent volume, were evaluated. Under the optimized condition, the limits of detection were from 0.2 to 0.5 μg·kg^-1. The recoveries of the method ranged from 82.1% to 101.4% with the relative standard deviations less than 11.1%. All the results demonstrated that the established method is potential for the determination of macrolide antibiotics in food safety analysis and monitoring.

Platinum nanoparticles supported on polymeric ionic liquid functionalized magnetic silica: effective and reusable heterogeneous catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols in water
