Loading controlled magnetic carbon dots for microwave-assisted solid-phase extraction: Preparation, extraction evaluation and applications in environmental aqueous samples

Magnetic thermo-responsive branched polymer for fast extraction and enrichment of phenolic acids in olive oil with tunable and enhanced performance

Magnetic thermo-responsive branched polymer (Fe₃O₄@poly(glycidyl methacrylate)@poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)) was fabricated for the first time and applied for microwave-assisted magnetic solid phase extraction of phenolic acids in olive oil samples followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis in multiple reaction monitoring mode. Owing to the controllable molecular weight of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization and the thermo-responsive characteristic of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), extraction performance could be efficiently tuned and enhanced. The whole sample pretreatment process was accomplished within 1 min with the help of the microwave. The nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, vibrating sample magnetometer, water contact angles and dynamic light scattering. The adsorption experimental data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The factors affecting the extraction process including adsorbent amount, adsorption time, sample volume, desorption conditions and interferents were investigated and optimized. Under the most favorable conditions, the developed method showed good linearity (R² ≥ 97.98%) in the range of 0.2-30 μg L^-1, low limits of detection (0.005-0.030 μg L^-1) and limits of quantification (0.016-0.098 μg L^-1) as well as satisfactory precision (RSDs≤4.85%). Our proposed method was successfully used for determination of phenolic acids in olive oil samples and satisfactory recoveries at three spiked concentration levels were in the range of 84.6-108.1% with RSDs less than 9.20%. Coupled with principal component analysis, our developed method proved promising for fast and convenient differentiation between extra virgin olive oils and refined olive oils.

Carbon Dot-Decorated Graphite Carbon Nitride Composites for Enhanced Solid-Phase Microextraction of Chlorobenzenes from Water

In this work, carbon dot-decorated graphite carbon nitride composites (CDs/g-C₃N₄) were synthesized and innovatively used as a SPME coating for the sensitive determination of chlorobenzenes (CBs) from water samples, coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The CDs/g-C₃N₄ coating presented superior extraction performance in comparison to pristine g-C₃N₄, owing to the enhancement of active groups by CDs. The extraction capacities of as-prepared SPME coatings are higher than those of commercial coatings due to the functions of nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing group binding, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibits a wide linearity range (0.25-2500 ng L^-1), extremely low detection of limits (0.002-0.086 ng L^-1), and excellent precision, with relative standard deviations of 5.3-9.7% for a single fiber and 7.5-12.6% for five fibers. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of CBs from real river water samples, with spiked recoveries ranging from 73.4 to 109.1%. This study developed a novel and efficient SPME coating material for extracting organic pollutants from environmental samples.

A thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique used for the enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water

In this article, we propose a novel microsolid-phase extraction and elution technique, which we called the thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique. The thin-layer solid-phase extraction phase is an octadecylsilylated sol gel- coated porous silica thin film prepared on the outer wall of a test tube, which has a larger surface area for the extraction of the target compounds compared to a conventional solid-phase microextraction phase. After optimization of the extraction procedure for five types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the liquid film elution technique was investigated. Liquid film elution is an elution technique wherein the compounds extracted into the thin-layer solid-phase extraction phase are eluted using a small volume of solvent film formed around the extraction phase. The results show that the elution can be carried out using 150 μL of eluent. Enrichment factors between 20 and 34 were obtained for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing more than four aromatic rings in 10 mL aliquots of aqueous samples. Finally, recoveries of 85-112% were obtained for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing more than four aromatic rings from spiked natural water samples using the thin-layer solid-phase extraction-liquid film elution technique.

Bifunctional Carbon Dots-Magnetic and Fluorescent Hybrid Nanoparticles for Diagnostic Applications

There is a huge demand for materials capable of simple detection or separation after conjugation with specific biologic substances when applied as a diagnostic tools. Taking into account the photoluminescence properties of C-dots and the highly magnetic properties of Fe(0), a new hybrid composite of these components was synthesized via ultrasound irradiation. The material was fully characterized by various physicochemical techniques. The main goal of the current study was to obtain a highly magnetic and intense fluorescent hybrid material. The goal was achieved. In addition, magnetic particles tended to agglomerate. The new hybrid can be suspended in ethanol, which is an additional feature of the current research. The dispersion of the hybrid nanoparticles in ethanol was achieved by utilizing the interaction of iron particles with C-dots which were decorated with functional groups on their surface. The newly formed hybrid material has potential applications in diagnostic by conjugating with specific antibodies or with any other biologic compounds. Such application may be useful in detection of various diseases such as: cancer, tuberculosis, etc.
