Abstract
In a number of laboratory studies, sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) particles showed increased reactivity, reducing capacity, and electron selectivity for Cr(VI) removal from contaminated waters. In our study, core-shell S-nZVI particles were successfully injected into an aquifer contaminated with Cr(VI) at a former chrome plating facility. S-nZVI migrated towards monitoring wells, resulting in a rapid decrease in Cr(VI) and Crtot concentrations and a long-term decrease in groundwater redox potential observed even 35 m downstream the nearest injection well. Characterization of materials recovered from the injection and monitoring wells confirmed the presence of nZVI particles, together with iron corrosion products. Chromium was identified on the surface of the recovered iron particles as Cr(III), and its occurrence was linked to the formation of insoluble chromium-iron (oxyhydr)oxides such as CrxFe(1-x)(OH)3(s). Injected S-nZVI particles formed aggregates, which were slowly transformed into iron (oxyhydr)oxides and carbonate green rust. Elevated contents of Fe0 were detected even several months after injection, indicating good S-nZVI longevity. The sulfide shell was gradually disintegrated and/or dissolved. Geochemical modelling confirmed the overall stability of the resulting Cr(III) phase at field conditions. This study demonstrates the applicability of S-nZVI for the remediation of a Cr(VI)-contaminated aquifer.

Abstract
Improving insulin sensitivity may reduce impacts of heat stress (HS) in pigs by facilitating heat dissipation. Chromium (Cr) has been reported to improve insulin sensitivity in pigs. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to investigate whether Cr supplementation can mitigate HS in growing pigs. Thirty-six gilts were randomly assigned to 2 diets containing 0 (control) or 400 ppb Cr. After 14 d the supplemented pigs were allocated to either 8 d thermoneutral (20°C constant; TN) or cyclic HS (35°C, 0900 h to 1700 h) conditions and continued their respective diet (n = 9 per group). Growth performance was recorded during the 14-d supplementation period. The physiological responses to HS were monitored by measuring respiration rate, rectal temperature, blood gas chemistry, and feed intake during thermal exposure. Kinetics of plasma glucose, insulin and NEFA were studied by intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) on d 8 of thermal treatment. Results showed Cr alleviated the HS-increased rectal temperature (P < 0.05) and respiration rate (P < 0.01) at 1300 h and 1600 h during thermal exposure. However, Cr did not mitigate the reduction in average daily feed intake which was reduced by 35% during HS or the HS-induced respiratory alkalosis. Chromium tended to increase average daily gain (0.86 vs. 0.95 kg, P = 0.070) during the 14-d supplementation under TN conditions before thermal exposure, which might be associated with the potential of Cr in improving overall insulin sensitivity, as evidenced by a reduced insulin resistance index calculated by Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA-IR; 0.65 vs. 0.51, P = 0.013) and a tendency of reduced fasting plasma insulin concentration (1.97 vs. 1.67 μU/mL, P = 0.094). Heat stress decreased the acute insulin releasing rate (P = 0.012) and consequently slowed glucose clearance rate (P = 0.035) during IVGTT. Besides, HS enlarged the values of area under the curve of NEFA during IVGTT (P < 0.01), indicating a reduced lipid mobilization. In conclusion, HS reduced insulin response to IVGTT. Chromium supplementation exhibited a potential in improving insulin sensitivity and mitigating HS symptoms in growing pigs.

Abstract
People taking dietary supplements are usually determined to lose weight, supplement nutrition or reduce the risk of illness and negative effects of their state of health. Chromium(III) supplementation influence body composition and mass, glucose and lipid metabolism and it enhance insulin action. This fact could be of general interest because diabetes mellitus is an increasing health problem in many countries. The study describes the effects of high dietary doses of chromium(III) complex with propionic acid [Cr3] (from 100 to 1000 mg Cr · kg(-1) diet) on the organisms of healthy female rats, with special regard to overall nutritional, carbohydrate, lipid and blood biochemical and morphological and haematological indices. The study was carried out on 30 10-week-old female Wistar rats, which were divided into five equal groups (six animals in each): the control group and four groups of tested animals which had free access to the diet supplemented with 100, 200, 500 and 1000 mg Cr · kg(-1) (equivalent of 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg Cr · kg body weight (b.w.) · day(-1)), given as [Cr3O(O2CCH2CH3)6(H2O)3]⋅NO3, also known as Cr3, for 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in body mass gains, feeding efficiency ratio, internal organ masses or blood serum glucose concentrations, except for some changes in the serum triglycerides concentration, which decreased in the rats that received 500 and 1000 mg Cr · kg(-1) diet, as opposed to the group treated with 200 mg Cr · kg(-1) diet. The dietary supplementation of Cr3 for 4 weeks at doses of 100 to 1000 mg Cr · kg(-1) diet did not affect overall nutritional indices and most blood biochemical, morphological and haematological indices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chromium (Cr) is commonly used as a complementary medicine for diabetes mellitus. Several studies suggest that Cr intakes may improve glucose metabolism and decrease oxidative stress. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effects of chromium histidinate (CrHis) supplementation using a range of reliable biomarkers of oxidative damage and histopathological changes in rats with diabetic retinopathy. METHODS Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin [(STZ), 55 mg/kg] by intraperitoneal injection in male Long-Evans rats. Three weeks after STZ injection, rats were divided into four groups, namely, untreated normal controls, normal rats receiving CrHis (110 μg/kg/day); untreated diabetics and diabetics treated with CrHis (110 μg/kg/day) orally for 12 weeks. RESULTS In the untreated diabetic group, levels of serum glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol (TC) and retina malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly increased, while expressions of retina insulin, and glucose transporter 1 (GLUT 1) and glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) and level of serum insulin were decreased. CrHis supplementation was found to reduce the levels of glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol and MDA and to improve the GLUT1, GLUT3 and insulin expressions in STZ-induced diabetic rats. CrHis prevents the changes in the expressions of GLUT1, GLUT3 and insulin and the level of MDA in the retina tissue, confirming the protective effect of CrHis supplementation against the retinopathy caused by STZ. Histopathologic findings suggest that the CrHis-treated diabetic group had normal retinal tissue appearance compared with the untreated diabetic group. CONCLUSIONS These results verify that CrHis has critical beneficial effects against retinal complications. Although detailed studies are required for the evaluation of the exact mechanism of the ameliorative effects of CrHis against diabetic complications, these preliminary experimental findings demonstrate that CrHis exhibits antidiabetic effects in a rat model of diabetic retinopathy by regulating the glucose metabolism and suppressing retinal tissue damage.

Abstract
We report the fabrication of gold screen printed macro electrodes which are electrochemically characterised and contrasted to polycrystalline gold macroelectrodes with their potential analytical application towards the sensing of chromium(III) and (VI) critically explored. It is found that while these gold screen printed macro electrodes have electrode kinetics typically one order of magnitude lower than polycrystalline gold macroelectrodes as is measured via a standard redox probe, in terms of analytical sensing, these gold screen printed macro electrodes mimic polycrystalline gold in terms of their analytical performance towards the sensing of chromium(III) and (VI), whilst boasting additional advantages over the macro electrode due to their disposable one-shot nature and the ease of mass production. An additional advantage of these gold screen printed macro electrodes compared to polycrystalline gold is the alleviation of the requirement to potential cycle the latter to form the required gold oxide which aids in the simplification of the analytical protocol. We demonstrate that gold screen printed macro electrodes allow the low micro-molar sensing of chromium(VI) in aqueous solutions over the range 10 to 1600 μM with a limit of detection (3σ) of 4.4 μM. The feasibility of the analytical protocol is also tested through chromium(VI) detection in environmental samples.

Abstract
Conditions in which glucose metabolism is impaired due to insulin resistance are associated with memory impairment. It was hypothesized that supplemental chromium (Cr) may alleviate insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes and consequently improve memory acquisition, depending upon its source and level. In a complete randomized design experiment, male Wistar rats (n=60; weighing 200-220 g) were fed either normal (8%, normal diet (ND)) or high-fat (40%, high-fat diet (HFD)) diet and supplemented with Cr as either chromium-glycinate (CrGly) or chromium-acetate (CrAc) at doses of 0, 40, or 80 μg/kg body weight (BW) via drinking water from 8 to 20 weeks of age. Feeding HFD induced type 2 diabetes, as reflected by greater glucose/insulin ratio (2.98 vs. 2.74) comparing to feeding ND. Moreover, HFD rats had greater BW (314 vs. 279 g) and less serum (53 vs. 68 μg/L) and brain (14 vs. 24 ng/g) Cr concentrations than ND rats. High-fat diet caused a 32% reduction in expressions of glucose transporters 1 and 3 (GLUTs) in brain tissue and a 27% reduction in mean percentage time spent in the target quadrant and a 38% increase in spatial memory acquisition phase (SMAP) compared with ND. Compared with supplemental Cr as CrAc, CrGly was more effective to ameliorate response variables (i.e., restoration of tissue Cr concentration, enhancement of cerebral GLUTs expressions, and reduction of the glucose/insulin ratio and SMAP) in a dose-response manner, especially in rats fed HFD. Supplemental Cr as CrGly may have therapeutic potential to enhance insulin action and alleviate memory acquisition in a dose-dependent manner, through restoring tissue Cr reserve and enhancing cerebral GLUTs expressions.

Abstract
One of the major obstacles to obtaining human cells of a defined and reproducible standard suitable for use as medical therapies is the necessity for FCS (fetal calf serum) media augmentation in routine cell culture applications. FCS has become the supplement of choice for cell culture research, as it contains an array of proteins, growth factors and essential ions necessary for cellular viability and proliferation in vitro. It is, however, a potential route for the introduction of zoonotic pathogens and makes defining the cell culture milieu impossible in terms of reproducibility, as the precise composition of each batch of serum not only changes but is in fact extremely variable. The present study determined the magnitude of donor variations in terms of elemental composition of FCS and the effect these variations had on the expression of a group of proteins associated with the antigenicity of primary human umbilical-vein endothelial cells, using a combination of ICPMS (inductively coupled plasma MS) and flow cytometry. Statistically significant differences were demonstrated for a set of trace elements in FCS, with correlations made to variations in antigenic expression during culture. The findings question in detail the suitability of FCS for the in vitro supplementation of cultures of primary human cells due to the lack of reproducibility and modulations in protein expression when cultured in conjunction with sera from xenogeneic donors.

Abstract
The reactions of 2,4- and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acids (dihydroxybenzoic acid, DHBA) with chromium(III) in weak acidic aqueous solutions have been shown to take place in at least two stages. The first stage of the reactions has an observed rate constant k1(obs) = k1[DHBA] + C and the corresponding activation parameters are ΔH1(2,4)≠ = 49, 5 kJ/mol−1, ΔS1(2,4)≠ = −103, 7 J mol−1 K−1, ΔH1(2,5)≠ = 60, 3 kJ/mol−1, and ΔS1(2,5)≠ = −68, 0 J mol−1 K−1. These are composite activation parameters and the breaking of the strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the two ligands is suggested to be the first step of the (composite) first stage of the reactions. The second stage is ligand concentration independent and is thus attributed to a chelation process. The corresponding activation parameters are ΔH2(2,4)≠ = 45, 13 kJ/mol−1, ΔS2(2,4)≠ = −185, 9 J mol−1 K−1, ΔH2(2,5)≠ = 54, 55 kJ/mol−1, and ΔS2(2,5)≠ = −154, 8 J mol−1 K−1. The activation parameters support an associative mechanism for the second stage of the reactions. The various substitution processes are accompanied by proton release, resulting in pH decrease.

Abstract
The interactions between chromium(III) and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA) were studied resulting in the formation of oxygen-bonded complexes upon substitution of water molecules in the chromium(III) coordination sphere. The experimental results show that the reaction takes place in at least three stages, involving various intermediates. The first stage was found to be linearly dependent on ligand concentration k1(obs)′ = k0 + k1(obs)[3, 4-DHBA], and the corresponding activation parameters were calculated as follows: ΔH1(obs)≠ = 51.2 ± 11.5 kJ mol−1, ΔS1(obs)≠ = −97.3 ± 28.9 J mol−1 K−1 (composite activation parameters) . The second and third stages, which are kinetically indistinguishable, do not depend on the concentrations of ligand and chromium(III), accounting for isomerization and chelation processes, respectively. The corresponding activation parameters are ΔH2(obs)≠ = 44.5 ± 5.0 kJ mol−1, ΔS2(obs)≠ = −175.8 ± 70.3 J mol−1 K−1. The observed stages are proposed to proceed via interchange dissociative (Id, first stage) and associative (second and third stages) mechanisms. The reactions are accompanied by proton release, as is shown by the pH decrease.

Abstract
Commercially available chromium supplements were tested for their DNA cleavage ability compared with synthetic chromium(III) complexes, including chromium(III) tris-picolinate [Cr(pic)3], basic chromium acetate [Cr3O(OAc)6]+, model complexes, and recently patented Cr-complexes for use in supplements or therapy. Four different supplements (P1-P4) were tested for their DNA cleaving activity in the presence and the absence of H2O2, dithiothreitol (DTT) or ascorbate. One supplement, P1, showed nicking of DNA in the absence of oxidant or reductant at 120 microM metal concentration. Different lot numbers of P1 were also tested for DNA cleavage activity with similar results. Commercial supplements containing Cr(pic)3 nicked DNA at 120 microM metal concentrations in the presence of 5 mM ascorbate or with excess hydrogen peroxide, analogous to reactions with synthetic Cr(pic)3 reported elsewhere. Another chromium (non-Cr(pic)3) supplement, P2, behaves in a comparable manner to simple Cr(III) salts in the DNA nicking assay. Chromium(III) malonate [Cr(mal)2] and chromium(III) acetate [Cr(OAc)] can nick DNA in the presence of ascorbate or hydrogen peroxide, respectively, only at higher metal concentrations. The Cr(III) complexes of histidine, succinate or N-acetyl-L-glutamate do not nick DNA to a significant degree.

Abstract
The first structurally characterized Cr(V) dioxo complex, cis-[CrV(O)2(phen)2](BF4) (2, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) has been synthesized by the oxidation of a related Cr(III) complex, cis-[Cr(III)(phen)2(OH2)2](NO3)3.2.5H2O (1, characterized by X-ray crystallography), with NaOCl in aqueous solutions in the presence of excess NaBF4, and its purity has been confirmed by electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS), EPR spectroscopy, and analytical techniques. Previously reported methods for the generation of Cr(V)-phen complexes, such as the oxidation of 1 with PbO2 or PhIO, have been shown by ESMS to lead to mixtures of Cr(III), Cr(V), Cr(VI), and in some cases Cr(IV) species, 3. Species 3 was assigned as [CrIV(O)(OH)(phen)2]+, based on ESMS and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. A distorted octahedral structure for 2 (CrO, 1.63 A; Cr-N, 2.04 and 2.16 A) was established by multiple-scattering (MS) modeling of XAFS spectra (solid, 10 K). The validity of the model was verified by a good agreement between the results of MS XAFS fitting and X-ray crystallography for 1 (distorted octahedron; Cr-O, 1.95 A; Cr-N, 2.06 A). Unlike for the well-studied Cr(V) 2-hydroxycarboxylato complexes, 2 was equally or more stable in aqueous media (hours at pH=1-13 and 25 degrees C) compared with polar aprotic solvents. A stable Cr(III)-Cr(VI) dimer, [Cr(III)(Cr(VI)O4)(phen)2]+ (detected by ESMS), is formed during the decomposition of 2 in nonaqueous media. Comparative studies of the oxidation of 1 by NaOCl or PbO2 have shown that [Cr(V)(O)2(phen)2]+ was the active species responsible for the previously reported oxidative DNA damage, bacterial mutagenicity, and increased incidence of micronuclei in mammalian cells, caused by the oxidation products of 1 with PbO2. Efficient oxidation of 1 to a genotoxic species, [Cr(V)(O)2(phen)2]+, in neutral aqueous media by a biological oxidant, hypochlorite, supports the hypothesis on a significant role of reoxidation of Cr(III) complexes, formed during the intracellular reduction of Cr(VI), in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenicity. Similar oxidation reactions may contribute to the reported adverse effects of a popular nutritional supplement, Cr(III) picolinate.
