Electrogenic Single-Species Biocomposites as Anodes for Microbial Fuel Cells

Polyethylene glycol hydrogel coatings for protection of electroactive bacteria against chemical shocks

Loss of bioelectrochemical activity in low resource environments or from chemical toxin exposure is a significant limitation in microbial electrochemical cells (MxCs), necessitating the development of materials that can stabilize and protect electroactive biofilms. Here, polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogels were designed as protective coatings over anodic biofilms, and the effect of the hydrogel coatings on biofilm viability under oligotrophic conditions and ammonia-N (NH4+-N) shocks was investigated. Hydrogel deposition occurred through polymerization of PEG divinyl sulfone and PEG tetrathiol precursor molecules, generating crosslinked PEG coatings with long-term hydrolytic stability between pH values of 3 and 10. Simultaneous monitoring of coated and uncoated electrodes co-located within the same MxC anode chamber confirmed that the hydrogel did not compromise biofilm viability, while the coated anode sustained nearly a 4 × higher current density (0.44 A/m2) compared to the uncoated anode (0.12 A/m2) under oligotrophic conditions. Chemical interactions between NH4+-N and PEG hydrogels revealed that the hydrogels provided a diffusive barrier to NH4+-N transport. This enabled PEG-coated biofilms to generate higher current densities during NH4+-N shocks and faster recovery afterwards. These results indicate that PEG-based coatings can expand the non-ideal chemical environments that electroactive biofilms can reliably operate in.

Engineered Living Materials for Advanced Diseases Therapy

Natural living materials serving as biotherapeutics exhibit great potential for treating various diseases owing to their immunoactivity, tissue targeting, and other biological activities. In this review, the recent developments in engineered living materials, including mammalian cells, bacteria, viruses, fungi, microalgae, plants, and their active derivatives that are used for treating various diseases are summarized. Further, the future perspectives and challenges of such engineered living material-based biotherapeutics are discussed to provide considerations for future advances in biomedical applications.

Recent Implementations of Hydrogel-Based Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (METs) in Sensing Applications

Hydrogel materials have been used extensively in microbial electrochemical technology (MET) and sensor development due to their high biocompatibility and low toxicity. With an increasing demand for sensors across different sectors, it is crucial to understand the current state within the sectors of hydrogel METs and sensors. Surprisingly, a systematic review examining the application of hydrogel-based METs to sensor technologies has not yet been conducted. This review aimed to identify the current research progress surrounding the incorporation of hydrogels within METs and sensors development, with a specific focus on microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). The manufacturing process/cost, operational performance, analysis accuracy and stability of typical hydrogel materials in METs and sensors were summarised and analysed. The current challenges facing the technology as well as potential direction for future research were also discussed. This review will substantially promote the understanding of hydrogel materials used in METs and benefit the development of electrochemical biosensors using hydrogel-based METs.

Methods of Encapsulation of Biomacromolecules and Living Cells. Prospects of Using Metal–Organic Frameworks

The review discusses different methods of encapsulation and biomineralization of macromolecules and living cells. Main advantages and disadvantages of most commonly used carriers, matrices, and materials for immobilization of proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, and living cells are briefly surveyed. Examples of delivery vehicles for multifunctional encapsulation of protein-like substances are presented. Particular attention is paid to prospects of using metal–organic frameworks in medicine and biotechnology.

Polyimide-Based Foams: Fabrication and Multifunctional Applications

Because of their unique three-dimensional cellular structure and intrinsic properties, polyimide foam materials have bright prospects for development in multiple functional equipment, which arouses extensive concern. In this Spotlight on Applications, several typical fabrication methods of polyimide foams and the related synthesis mechanism have been systematically described. The advantages and disadvantages of the preparation methods have been compared with each other. Representative functions and the corresponding mechanism models have been concluded, which involve thermal, mechanical, sensing, electromagnetic, environmental, and electrical fields. In the end, the severe tasks and challenges of polyimide foam materials have been summarized, and their promising future development is worth expecting.

Ultralight, Structurally Stable Electrospun Sponges with Tailored Hydrophilicity as a Novel Material Platform

Sponges based on short electrospun fibers have received significant attention due to their ultrahigh porosity, lightweight, and multifunctional characteristics. In particular, polyimide (PI) sponges have been researched due to their exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability. Nevertheless, a number of sponges, including PI, are usually hydrophobic and synthesized in toxic, nonwater solvents (e.g., 1,4-dioxane). Conversely, hydrophilic sponges disintegrate upon contact with water. Here, we suggest a new strategy to fabricate PI sponges in water by introducing a suitable surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) (sPI sponges). With less than 1 wt % of SDBS with respect to PI short fibers, they can be homogeneously dispersed in water and mixed well with poly(amic acid) (PAA) solution. The synthesized sponge, depending on the concentration of SDBS, showed hydrophilic properties and substantial water uptake above 5000%. The hydrophilic properties of the sponges, which are not common, and the preparation from aqueous solution introduce new research opportunities. Such hydrophilic sponges are particularly special because they do not swell in contact with water, which makes them dimensionally stable. The methods presented here can serve as a milestone for the future development of various kinds of hydrophilic sponges applied for various applications, ranging from tissue engineering to oil/water separation.

Preparation of Biocomposite Microfibers Ready for Processing into Biologically Active Textile Fabrics for Bioremediation

Biocomposites, i.e., materials consisting of metabolically active microorganisms embedded in a synthetic extracellular matrix, may find applications as highly specific catalysts in bioproduction and bioremediation. 3D constructs based on fibrous biocomposites, so-called "artificial biofilms," are of particular interest in this context. The inability to produce biocomposite fibers of sufficient mechanical strength for processing into bioactive fabrics has so far hindered progress in the area. Herein a method is proposed for the direct wet spinning of microfibers suitable for weaving and knitting. Metabolically active bacteria (either Shewanella oneidensis or Nitrobacter winogradskyi (N. winogradskyi)) are embedded in these fibers, using poly(vinyl alcohol) as matrix. The produced microfibers have a partially crystalline structure and are stable in water without further treatment, such as coating. In a first application, their potential for nitrite removal (N. winogradskyi) is demonstrated, a typical challenge in potable water treatment.
