Abstract
The antifouling efficacy of hydrophilic polymer coatings is closely related to their surface charge. Many biological foulants such as mammalian cells and marine microalgae possess a negative surface charge, discouraging the use of positively charged polymer coatings for antifouling purposes. Instead, electrically neutral yet hydrophilic polymers have been widely employed, leveraging hydration layers to create a barrier against fouling. However, challenges arise in marine environments where both living marine organisms and sediments can adhere to solid surfaces, rendering previous findings less directly applicable. This study investigates the impact of a polymer coating surface charge on marine antifouling properties. Polymer brushes with various charges are applied to solid substrates, and the adhesion behavior of marine diatoms is assessed under both marine sediment-free and marine sediment conditions. The results underscore the effectiveness of negatively charged polymer brush coatings in marine antifouling, regardless of sediment presence.

Abstract
Water molecules can bind to zwitterionic polymers, such as carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine, forming strong hydration layers along the polymer chains. Such hydration layers act as a barrier to impede the attachment of marine fouling organisms; therefore, zwitterionic polymer coatings have been of considerable interest as marine antifouling coatings. However, recent studies have shown that severe adsorption of marine sediments occurs on zwitterionic-polymer-coated surfaces, resulting in the degradation of their marine antifouling performance. Therefore, a novel approach for forming amphiphilic zwitterionic polymers using zwitterionic and hydrophobic monomers is being investigated to simultaneously inhibit both sediment adsorption and marine fouling. In this study, amphiphilic zwitterionic thin polymer brushes composed of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) and trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) were synthesized on Si/SiO2 surfaces via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. For this, a facile metal-ion-mediated method was developed for immobilizing polymerization initiators on solid substrates to subsequently form poly(SBMA-co-TFEMA) brushes on the initiator-coated substrate surface. Poly(SBMA-co-TFEMA) brushes with various SBMA/TFEMA ratios were prepared to determine the composition at which both marine diatom adhesion and sediment adsorption can be prevented effectively. The results indicate that poly(SBMA-co-TFEMA) brushes prepared with an SBMA/TFEMA ratio of 3:7 effectively inhibit both sediment adsorption and marine diatom adhesion, thereby exhibiting balanced marine antifouling properties. Thus, the findings of this study provide important insights into the design of amphiphilic marine antifouling materials.

Abstract
In this study, on-line preconcentration and selective determination of the trace sulfadiazine (SDZ) existing in milk and hen egg white samples were realized by the capillary electrophoresis using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coated capillary. The capillary coated with MIP was firstly prepared through the surface imprinted techniques, using SDZ as template molecule and dopamine as function monomer and crosslinker, and then amine-terminated poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMOXA-NH2) was introduced onto polydopamine layer to reduce the non-specific adsorption. Successful preparation of SDZ-MIP-PMOXA coating was verified by zeta potential, as well as water contact angle. The SDZ-MIP-PMOXA coated capillary performed well on-line preconcentration of SDZ and the obtained peak area of SDZ was 46 times higher than that one obtained in bare capillary using the same procedure. Then the proposed on-line preconcentration method was fully validated and displayed good linear behavior in the concentration from 5.0 to 100.0 ng/mL, with the limit of detection was low to 1.5 ng/mL; and this method presented excellent accuracy and robustness. The prepared SDZ-MIP-PMOXA coated capillary also showed high selectivity with the imprinting factor of 5.85 and good repeatability during five consecutive runs with the relative standard deviation value of peak area was 1.6%. At last, the application of the prepared SDZ-MIP-PMOXA coated capillary in the detection of SDZ in spiked food samples was investigated, and good recoveries of 98.7-109.3% were obtained.

Abstract
Polyglycerol (PG) based surfaces materials and surfaces are well-established bio-compatible materials. Crosslinking of the dendrimeric molecules via their OH groups improves their mechanical stability up to the point that free-standing materials can be attained. Here, we investigate the effect of different crosslinkers on PG films regarding their biorepulsivity and mechanical properties. For this purpose, PG films with different thicknesses (15, 50 and 100 nm) were prepared by polymerizing glycidol in a ring-opening polymerization onto hydroxyl-terminated Si substrates. These films were then crosslinked using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDGE), divinyl sulfone (DVS), glutaraldehyde (GA), 1,11-di(mesyloxy)-3,6,9-trioxaundecane (TEG-Ms2) or 1,11-dibromo-3,6,9-trioxaundecane (TEG-Br2), respectively. While DVS, TEG-Ms2, and TEG-Br2 resulted in slightly thinned films, presumably due to loss of unbound material, increase of film thickness was observed with GA and, in particular, EDGDE, what can be explained by the different crosslinking mechanisms. The biorepulsive properties of the crosslinked PG films were characterized by water contact angle (WCA) goniometry and various adsorption assays involving proteins (serum albumine, fibrinogen, γ-globulin) and bacteria (E. coli), showing that some crosslinkers (EGDGE, DVS) improved the biorepulsive properties, while others deteriorated them (TEG-Ms2, TEG-Br2, GA). As the crosslinking stabilized the films, it was possible to use a lift-off procedure to obtain free-standing membranes if the thickness of the films was 50 nm or larger. Their mechanical properties were examined with a bulge test showing high elasticities, with the Young's moduli increasing in the order GA ≈ EDGDE < TEG-Br2 ≈ TEG-Ms2 < DVS.

Abstract
In situ 1H NMR characterization of copolymerization reactions of various 2-oxazoline monomers at different molar ratios offers detailed insight into the build-up and composition of the polymer chains. Various 2-oxazolines were copolymerized in one single solvent, butyronitrile, with 2-dec-9'-enyl-2-oxazoline, where the double bond allows for post-polymerization modification and can function as a crosslinking unit to form polymer networks. The types of the monomers and their molar ratios in the feed have a strong effect on the microstructure of the forming copolymer chains. Copolymers comprising 2-dec-9'-enyl-2-oxazoline and either 2-ethyl-, 2-isopropyl-, 2-butyl-, 2-heptyl, 2-nonyl- or 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline, show significant differences in sequential structure of copolymers ranging from block to gradient and random ordering of the monomer units. 1H NMR was found to be a powerful tool to uncover detailed oxazoline copolymerization kinetics and evolution of chain composition.

Abstract
Amphiphilic antimicrobial polymers display activity against the outer bacterial cell membrane, triggering various physiological effects. We investigated the regulation of ion transport across the lipid bilayer to understand differences in biological activity for a series of amphiphilic polymethyloxazoline - polyethyleneimine copolymers. The results confirmed that the tested structures were able to increase the permeability of the lipid bilayer (LB) membrane or its rupture. Black lipid membrane (BLM) experiments show that the triggered conductance profile and its character is strongly correlated with the polymer structure and zeta potential. The polymer exhibiting the highest antimicrobial activity promotes ion transport by using a unique mechanism and step-like characteristics with well-defined discreet openings and closings. The molecule was incorporated into the membrane in a reproducible way, and the observed channel-like activity could be responsible for the antibacterial activity of this molecule.

Abstract
Poly(2-oxazolines) (POx) are an attractive material of choice for biocompatible and bioactive coatings in medical applications. To prepare POx coatings, the plasma polymerization represents a fast and facile approach that is surface-independent. However, unfavorable factors of this method such as using the low-pressure regimes and noble gases, or poor control over the resulting surface chemistry limit its utilization. Here, we propose to overcome these drawbacks by using well-defined POx-based copolymers prepared by living cationic polymerization as a starting material. Chemically inert polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is selected as a substrate due to its beneficial features for medical applications. The deposited POx layer is additionally post-treated by non-equilibrium plasma generated at atmospheric pressure. For this purpose, diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge (DCSBD) is used as a source of "cold" homogeneous plasma, as it is operating at atmospheric pressure even in ambient air. Prepared POx coatings possess hydrophilic nature with an achieved water contact angle of 60°, which is noticeably lower in comparison to the initial value of 106° for raw PTFE. Moreover, the increased fibroblasts adhesion in comparison to raw PTFE is achieved, and the physical and biological properties of the POx-modified surfaces remain stable for 30 days.

Abstract
Biomedical devices have become essential in the health care. Every day, an enormous number of these devices are used or implanted in humans. In this context, the bacterial contamination that could be developed in implanted devices is critical since it is estimated that infections kill more people than other medical causes. Commonly, these infections are treated with antibiotics, but the biofilm formation on implant surfaces could significantly reduce the effectiveness of these antibiotics since bacteria inside the biofilm is protected from the drug. In some cases, a complete removal of the implant is necessary in order to overcome the infection. In this context, antibacterial coatings are considered an excellent strategy to avoid biofilm formation and, therefore, mitigate the derived complications. In this review, the main biomaterials used in biomedical devices, the mechanism of biofilm formation, and the main strategies for the development of antibacterial coatings, are reviewed. Finally, the main polymer-based strategies to develop antibacterial coatings are summarized, with the aim of these coatings being to avoid the bacteria proliferation by controlling the antibacterial mechanisms involved and enhancing long-term stability.

Abstract
Emulsions are dynamic materials that have been extensively employed within pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. However, their use beyond conventional applications has been hindered by difficulties in surface functionalization, and an inability to selectively control physicochemical properties. Here, we employ custom poly(2-oxazoline) block copolymers to overcome these limitations. We demonstrate that poly(2-oxazoline) copolymers can effectively stabilize nanoscale droplets of hydrocarbon and perfluorocarbon in water. The controlled living polymerization of poly(2-oxazoline)s allows for the incorporation of chemical handles into the surfactants such that covalent modification of the emulsion surface can be performed. Through post-emulsion modification of these new surfactants, we are able to access nanoemulsions with modified surface chemistries, yet consistent sizes. By decoupling size and surface charge, we explore structure-activity relationships involving the cellular uptake of nanoemulsions in both macrophage and non-macrophage cell lines. We conclude that the cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of poly(2-oxazoline)-stabilized droplets can be systematically tuned via chemical modification of emulsion surfaces.

Abstract
We synthesized a zwitterionic dopamine derivative ( ZW-DOPA) containing both catechol and amine groups, and we demonstrated an excellent marine antifouling surface by controlling the oxidation of ZW-DOPA. The oxidation was mediated by the deprotonation of catechol or the addition of an oxidant (ammonium persulfate (AP) or sodium periodate (NaIO4)). The oxidation and subsequent molecular transformation of ZW-DOPA was investigated over time by UV-vis spectroscopy. Among the different oxidation conditions tested, NaIO4-induced ZW-DOPA coating was the most efficient and successfully formed on various substrates, such as titanium dioxide, stainless steel, and nylon. Compared with uncoated substrates, ZW-DOPA-coated substrates showed high resistance to marine diatom adhesion. Considering the ease of use and substrate independence of the ZW-DOPA coating, this method shows promise as a basis for inhibiting marine fouling on a variety of substrates used in the marine industry and aquatic environments.

Abstract
Polymer brushes are particularly performant antifouling coatings, owing to their high grafting density that prevents unwanted biomacromolecules to diffuse through the coating and adhere to the underlying substrate. In addition to this structural feature, polymer brushes require a relatively high level of hydrophilicity and a globally neutral structure to display ultrahigh protein resistance. Poly(2-alkyl-2-oxaolines) are attractive building blocks for such coatings as they can display relatively high hydrophilicity, owing to their amide repeat units, but can also be side-chain and end-chain functionalized relatively readily. However, poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines) have not yet been introduced through a radical-mediated grafting from polymer brush structure that would confer the high level of grafting density that is the hallmark of highly protein resistant brushes. Here, we present the formation of a series of poly(oligo(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)methacrylate) brushes generated via a grafting from approach, via atom transfer radical polymerization. We characterize the chemical structure of the resulting coatings via ellipsometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We show that allyl end groups can be introduced as a side chain of these brushes to allow functionalization via thiol-ene chemistry. We demonstrate the excellent protein resistance of these coatings in single protein solutions as well as serum solutions at concentration typically used for cell culture. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of using these brushes for the micropatterning of cells and the generation of cell-based assays.

Abstract
We report an effective and versatile approach to control marine fouling on artificial surfaces based on specific chemical interactions found in marine mussels. The approach consists of mussel-inspired polydopamine coating, spin-coating-assisted deposition of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) catechols, and their cross-linking via catechol-Fe3+-catechol interactions. Using this approach, multilayered PEG films that were highly resistant to marine diatom adhesion were successfully constructed on various substrates, such as stainless steel, nylon, titanium oxide, and silicon oxide. We believe that our results will provide a basis for the construction of a marine antifouling agent that can be applied by a large variety of industries owing to its applicability to different types of substrates and stability under marine environments.
