Dynamic ionic behavior of gel-free diolefin rubber-based carboxylate ionomers prepared via olefin metathesis

Constructing dynamic ionic bonding interactions is acknowledged as an efficient strategy to improve the physical-mechanical characteristics of rubber materials, and to provide them with some novel features such as self-healing. However, currently reported grafting-modification approaches such as free-radical and anionic reactions inevitably induced the generation of rubber gels, which is unfavorable for their practical applications. In this work, we fabricated a gel-free carbonylated diolefin rubber based on the olefin metathesis reaction. Furthermore, a diolefin rubber-based ionomer was prepared through the complexation of carbonylated diolefin rubber and sodium hydroxide. Compared with pure diolefin rubber, the resultant ionomers exhibited a higher glass transition temperature (T_g), higher mechanical strength and higher damping properties. Moreover, these ionomers were provided with apparent self-healing behavior. This was primarily because of the increased dynamic ionic bonding interactions induced by the formation of multi-ion-pair cluster structures, a unique intermolecular interaction that exists in the ionomers. Consequently, the gel-free diolefin rubber-based ionomers offer some brand-new applications, such as artificial skin and high-performance "green" tires.

Shape-Memory Composites Based on Ionic Elastomers

Shape-memory polymers tend to present rigid behavior at ambient temperature, being unable to deform in this state. To obtain soft shape-memory elastomers, composites based on a commercial rubber crosslinked by both ionic and covalent bonds were developed, as these materials do not lose their elastomeric behavior below their transition (or activation) temperature (using ionic transition for such a purpose). The introduction of fillers, such as carbon black and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), was studied and compared with the unfilled matrix. By adding contents above 10 phr of MWCNT, shape-memory properties were enhanced by 10%, achieving fixing and recovery ratios above 90% and a faster response. Moreover, by adding these fillers, the conductivity of the materials increased from ~10⁻¹¹ to ~10⁻⁴ S·cm⁻¹, allowing the possibility to activate the shape-memory effect with an electric current, based on the heating of the material by the Joule effect, achieving a fast and clean stimulus requiring only a current source of 50 V.

Ionic Correlations in Random Ionomers

Understanding the electrostatic interactions in ion-containing polymers is crucial to better design shape memory polymers and ion-conducting membranes for multiple energy storage and conversion applications. In molten polymers, the dielectric permittivity is low, generating strong ionic correlations that lead to clustering of the charges. Here, we investigate the influence of electrostatic interactions on the nanostructure of randomly charged polymers (ionomers) using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Densely packed branched structures rich in charged species are found as the strength of the electrostatic interactions increases. Polydispersity in charge fraction and composition combined with ion correlations leads to percolated nanostructures with long-range fluctuations. We identify the percolation point at which the ionic branched nanostructures percolate and offer a rigorous investigation of the statistics of the shape of the aggregates. The extra degree of freedom introduced by the charge polydispersity leads to bicontinuous structures with a broad range of compositions, similar to neutral A-B random copolymers, as well as to desirable percolated ionic structure in randomly charged-neutral diblock copolymers. These findings provide insight into the design of conducting and robust nanostructures in ion-containing polymers.

The shape-memory effect in ionic elastomers: fixation through ionic interactions

Shape-memory elastomers based on a commercial rubber cross-linked by both ionic and covalent bonds have been developed. The elastomeric matrix was a carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) vulcanized with magnesium oxide (MgO) providing ionic interactions that form hierarchical structures. The so-named ionic transition is used as the unique thermal transition responsible for the shape-memory effect (SME) in these elastomers. These ionic interactions fix the temporary shape due to their behavior as dynamic cross-links with temperature changes. Covalent cross-links were incorporated with the addition of different proportions of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) to the ionic elastomer to establish and recover the permanent shape. In this article, the SME was modulated by modifying the degree of covalent cross-linking, while keeping the ionic contribution constant. In addition, different programming parameters, such as deformation temperature, heating/cooling rate, loading/unloading rate and percentage of tensile strain, were evaluated for their effects on shape-memory behavior.
