Abstract
Plasmonic nanomaterials such as Au, Ag, and Cu are widely recognized for their strong light-matter interactions, making them promising photothermal materials for solar steam generation. However, their practical use in water evaporation is significantly limited by the trade-off between high costs and poor stability. In this regard, we introduce a novel, nonmetallic dual plasmonic TiN/MoO3-x composite. This composite features a three-dimensional, urchin-like biomimetic structure, with plasmonic TiN nanoparticles embedded within a network of plasmonic MoO3-x nanorods. As a solar absorber, the TiN/MoO3-x composite achieves a high evaporation rate of ∼2.05 kg m-2 h-1 with an energy efficiency up to 106.7% under 1 sun illumination, outperforming the state-of-the-art plasmonic systems. The high photothermal stability and unique dual plasmonic nanostructure of the TiN/MoO3-x composite are demonstrated by advanced in situ laser-heating transmission electron microscopy and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy/electron energy-loss spectroscopy, respectively. This work provides new inspiration for the design of plasmonic materials.

Abstract
Cactus spinelike materials have attracted much attention due to high fog harvesting efficiency, but great challenges in structure fabrication and structural controllability still remain. In this study, we proposed a magnetically driven spray-coating method to fabricate a cactus spinelike superhydrophobic Fe3O4 vertical array on nonwoven cotton fabric. This method is simple and controllable; a mixture containing magnetic Fe3O4 particles and organosilicon resin was atomized into tiny droplets and arranged along the magnetic field lines. Different from the traditional method to prepare a cactus spinelike structure via liquid flow under magnet, which is usually accompanied with a big structure size and an unobvious structure feature due to the high viscosity of magnetic liquid. However, if the magnetic liquid is transformed into tiny magnetic droplets by a spraying method, it is promising to prepare micrometer-scale conical structures, and the reduction degree of bionic structures is high. When the fabricated structure is used for fog harvesting, it shows an extremely high efficiency of approximately 6.33 g cm-2 h-1, which is superior to most state-of-the-art fog harvesting materials. Considering the advantages of simplicity, structure controllability, and high fog harvesting rate, the reported strategy provides an avenue to build up high-performance fog harvesting materials.

Abstract
Establishing an advanced ecosystem incorporating freshwater harvesting, plastic utilization, and clean fuel acquisition is profoundly significant. However, low-efficiency evaporation, single energy utilization, and catalyst leakage severely hinder sustainable development. Herein, a nanofiber-based mortise-and-tenon structural Janus aerogel (MTSJA) is strategically designed in the first attempt and supports Z-scheme catalysts. By harnessing of the upper hydrophilic layer with hydrophilic channels embedding into the hydrophobic bottom layer to achieve tailoring bottom wettability states. MTSJA is capable of a fully-floating function for lower heat loss, water supply, and high-efficiency solar-to-vapor conversion. Benefiting from the ultrasonic cavitation effect and high sensitivity of materials to mechanical forces, this is also the first demonstration of synergistic solar and ultrasound fields to power simultaneous evaporation desalination and waste plastics as reusable substrates generating fuel energy. The system enables persistent desalination with an exceptional evaporation rate of 3.1 kg m-2 h-1 and 82.3% efficiency (21 wt.% NaCl solution and 1 sun), and realizes H2, CO, and CH4 yields with 16.1, 9.5, and 3 µmol h-1 g-1, respectively. This strategy holds great potential for desalination and plastics value-added transformation toward clean energy and carbon neutrality.

Abstract
The engineering of multifunctional structures with special surface wettability is highly desirable for all-weather freshwater production, but relevant research is scarce. In this study, a Janus conical vertical array was designed and fabricated via a magnetically driven spray-coating method for the first time. Benefiting from the special structure and wettability enhancement of the array in terms of solar absorption, fog capture and merging, droplet movement and evaporation area, all-weather freshwater production consisting of high-quality daytime solar vapor generation (water evaporation rate approximately 2.43 kg m-2 h-1, 1 kW m-2) and nighttime fog collection (water collection rate approximately 3.536 g cm-2 h-1) can be realized concurrently. When the designed array is employed for outdoor environments (114°35'E, 30°38'N, average daily temperature 34.9 °C, average daily humidity 64.0%), reliable and efficient daily pure water yields of 19.13 kg m-2-26.09 kg m-2 are obtainable. We believe that the proposed strategy for fabricating a Janus conical vertical array is novel in the integration of solar vapor generation and fog collection, which has great significance for all-weather freshwater production.

Abstract
Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has been proven to be a promising method to alleviate the impact of the water crisis on human activities. However, the low water-sorption capacity and sluggish ab/desorption kinetics of current SAWH materials make it difficult to achieve high daily water production. In this study, a photothermal porous sodium alginate-tannic acid-5/Fe3+@lithium chloride aerogel (SA-TA-5/Fe3+@LiCl) with macroporous structure (average pore diameter ∼43.67 μm) and high solar absorbance (∼98.4 %) was fabricated via Fe3+-induced crosslinking and blackening methods. When it is employed for SAWH, moisture can enter the inner space of the aerogel and contact highly hygroscopic lithium chloride (LiCl) more easily via macroporous channels, resulting in the water uptake for the SA-TA-5/Fe3+@LiCl aerogel reaching approximately 1.229 g g-1 under dry conditions (relative humidity (RH) ∼ 45 %, 25 °C) after a short time (4 h) moisture absorption, and releasing as much as 97.7 % of the absorbed water under 1 sun irradiation within 2 h. As a proof of concept, it is estimated that the daily water yield of the fabricated SA-TA/Fe3+@LiCl aerogel can reach approximately 4.65 kg kg-1 in conditions close to the real outdoor environment (RH ∼ 45 %, 25 °C), which satisfies the daily minimum water consumption of two adults. This study demonstrates a novel strategy for developing advanced solar-driven SAWH materials with enhanced ab/desorption kinetics and efficient water sorption-desorption properties.

Abstract
High-quality solar evaporators with all-in-one design are highly desirable for vapor generation, but relevant research is scarce. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) porous polypyrrole/polydopamine (PPY/PDA) structure was fabricated via a simple heating-assisted rapid oxidative polymerization method. The obtained evaporator has multiple features, and can simultaneously provide rapid water transport channels (average pore sizes ∼ 18.37 nm), low thermal conductivity (0.071 W m-1 K-1), high solar absorbance (97.08%), and good mechanical properties. When it is employed as an evaporator, the calculated water evaporation rate is approximately 2.12 kg m-2h-1, which is comparable to other reported 3D evaporators. Additionally, the evaporator displays great potential for purification toward various nonpotable water, as well as reliable pure water yields in an outdoor application (from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the evaporator can produce at least 13.95 L of drinkable water for a 1 m2 sample). We believe that the proposed strategy to fabricate all-in-one evaporators has great significance for scientific research and practical applications.

Abstract
Applying solar energy to generate drinking water is a clean and low-energy exhaust route to address the issue of water purification. The current challenge with solar vapor generation is constructing nano/micro-hierarchical structures that can convert solar irradiation into exploitable thermal energy with high efficiency. Although various structures and material designs have been reported in recent years, solar vapor conversion can be improved by integrating light harvesting, thermal concentration, and water diffusion. Because of the optimized solar harvesting, enhanced heat capacity, and specified diffusive path endowed by the hierarchical composite structure, amorphous tantalum oxide/carbon-based yolk-shell structures (α-Ta2O5/C YS) for highly efficient solar vapor generation under 1 sun illumination are applied in this study. As a result, the α-Ta2O5/C YS realized a water evaporation rate of 3.54 kg m-2 h-1 with a solar-thermal conversion efficiency of 91% under one sun irradiation (1 kW m-2) with excellent evaporation stability. The collected water from seawater meets the World Health Organization drinking water standard. Importantly, reactive oxygen species enabled by α-Ta2O5 could be produced for water sterilization, exhibiting a facile way for application in various scenarios to acquire drinkable water.

Abstract
Solar-powered interfacial heating has emerged as a sustainable technology for hybrid applications with minimal carbon footprints. Aerogels, hydrogels, and sponges/foams are the main building blocks for state-of-the-art photothermal materials. However, these conventional three-dimensional (3D) structures and related fabrication technologies intrinsically fail to maximize important performance-enhancing strategies and this technology still faces several performance roadblocks. Herein, monolithic, self-standing, and durable aerogel matrices are developed based on composite photothermal inks and ink-extrusion 3D printing, delivering all-in-one interfacial steam generators (SGs). Rapid prototyping of multiscale hierarchical structures synergistically reduce the energy demand for evaporation, expand actual evaporation areas, generate massive environmental energy input, and improve mass flows. Under 1 sun, high water evaporation rates of 3.74 kg m-2 h-1 in calm air and 25.3 kg m-2 h-1 at a gentle breeze of 2 m s-1 are achieved, ranking among the best-performing solar-powered interfacial SGs. 3D-printed microchannels and hydrophobic modification deliver an icephobic surface of the aerogels, leading to self-propelled and rapid removal of ice droplets. This work shines light on rational fabrication of hierarchical photothermal materials, not merely breaking through the constraints of solar-powered interfacial evaporation and clean water production, but also discovering new functions for photothermal interfacial deicing.

Abstract
Macroscopic 3D porous materials are ideal solar evaporators for water purification. However, the limited sunlight intensity and penetrating depth during solar-driven evaporation cannot prevent the biofouling formation by photothermal effect, thus leading to the deterioration of evaporation rate. Herein, a magnetic heating strategy is reported for anti-biofouling solar steam generation based on a magnetic silk fibroin (SF) scaffold with bi-heating property. Under one sun, the solar-heated top surface of magnetic SF scaffolds accelerates water evaporation at 2.03 kg m-2 h-1 , while the unheated inner channels suffer from the formation of biofilm. When exposed to alternating magnetic field (AMF), the magnetic SF scaffold can be integrally heated, leading to an efficient inner temperature to prevent biofouling in channels for water transportation. Accordingly, magneto-heated scaffolds show steady water evaporation rates after exposure to S. aureus and E. coli, which maintained 93.6-94.6% of original performance. In contrast, the evaporation rates of the scaffolds without AMF treatment are reduced to 1.31 (S. aureus) and 1.32 (E. coli) kg m-2 h-1 , decreased by 35.5% and 35.0%, respectively. In addition, the magneto-heated scaffold inhibits biofouling formation in natural lake water, maintaining 99.5% original performance.

Abstract
Solar steam generator (SSG) systems have attracted increasing attention, owing to its simple manufacturing, material abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly freshwater production. This system relies on photothermic materials and water absorbing substrates for a clean continuous distillation process. To optimize this process, there are factors that are needed to be considered such as selection of solar absorber and water absorbent materials, followed by micro/macro-structural system design for efficient water evaporation, floating, and filtration capability. In this contribution, we highlight the general interfacial SSG concept, review and compare recent progresses of different SSG systems, as well as discuss important factors on performance optimization. Furthermore, unaddressed challenges such as SSG's cost to performance ratio, filtration of untreatable micropollutants/microorganisms, and the need of standardization testing will be discussed to further advance future SSG studies.

Abstract
Solar driven interfacial vapor generation is considered to be an effective strategy to alleviate the impact of water crisis on human activities. However, great efforts of researchers have been devoted to improving the solar steam generation efficiency, while less attention has been paid to the long-term stability of evaporators. Herein, we proposed a robust core-shell structured evaporator prepared by a simple fast curing assisted spray-coating method. Owing to the inherent superelasticity of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) sponge, the finely designed novel 3D core-shell structure, and the quick curing of branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and 5-pentaerythritol pentaacrylate (5Acl) induced special knot shaped photothermal coating, the as-obtained evaporator (CB/MF) performed well in vapor generation with a high water evaporation rate of 2.082 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination, and the evaporation efficiency reached 123.5%, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art artificial solar evaporator. Even in strict application situations, such as long-term recycling testing for 40 h, 500 compression-release cycles (20%, 40% or 60%), sonication for 12 h, or shaking for 30 h, the water evaporation rate of the obtained evaporator remains at a high level of above 2.00 kg m-2 h-1. Additionally, the evaporator shows effective purification toward high-concentration brine, acid-base solutions, simulated seawater, dye wastewater, and heavy metal wastewater, as well as reliable pure water, providing an outdoor application. With the advantages of a high evaporation rate, stable long-term vapor generation, and effective purification toward various non-potable water sources, we believe that the fabricated core-shell structured CB/MF evaporator is a promising candidate for practical solar steam generation.

Abstract
Solar steam generation has been considered a promising approach for using renewable solar energy to produce clean water from seawater and wastewater. It shows great potential for alleviating water shortages. However, salt accumulation and system longevity are challenges which impede the widespread use of evaporators. This paper reports a stable Janus evaporator with thickness controllable hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers based on cellulose composite aerogels, which were extracted from waste cotton fabric by a two-step freeze-drying process. The obtained glutaraldehyde cross-linked carbon nanotubes/cellulose Janus aerogel exhibited an attractive solar steam generation rate of 1.81 kg·m-2·h-1 and a light-to-vapor efficiency of up to 92.5% in 1 sun illumination. Moreover, the Janus solar steam generator could pledge stable and sustainable solar-driven water evaporation performance within a 10 h test, showing a high salt-resistant property in simulated seawater. In addition, the developed solar evaporator also had a good purification effect on dye wastewater. These findings suggest its potential ability for seawater desalination and wastewater purification.

Abstract
Improving the evaporation rate of solar steam generation (SSG) has always been a research hotspot to solve the shortage of water resources. Using cotton, Fe3O4, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and diatomite (DM) as raw materials, DM/PVA/Fe3O4@cotton composites with both firmness and hydrophilicity were prepared. Fe3O4 has a wide range of light absorption characteristics and good photothermal conversion performance, and is an ideal photothermal conversion material. PVA enhances the adhesion between Fe3O4, cotton and DM and enhances the hardness of the sample and the internal porous structure. The existence of DM greatly improves the hydrophilicity of the sample, ensuring that the water in the lower layer can be continuously transported to the surface of the sample, and DM makes the surface of the sample rough, which reduces the reflection of sunlight and improves the efficiency of light heat conversion. Under one-sun irradiation, the temperature of the sample surface increases by 52.6 °C, the evaporation rate can reach 1.32 kg m-2 h-1 and the evaporation efficiency is 82.9%. Using this sample as the photothermal conversion layer of the SSG device, the removal rate of salt ions in seawater is more than 98% and the removal rate of heavy metal ions in sewage is close to 100%. This work provides a new idea and design method for SSG in the field of seawater desalination and sewage treatment.

Abstract
Interfacial heating is the most obvious feature that distinguishes the novel solar driven interfacial heating from the traditional solar heating technology, and it is also a key factor in promoting solar energy utilization and vapor generation performance. However, the inherent trade-off between water supply and the interfacial heating performance of photothermal materials has rarely been investigated. Herein, an all-in-one designed bilayer evaporator consisting of a top solar absorber (Fe3O4@PDA-SA) and a bottom water transport layer (SA) is reported. This bilayer structured aerogel can provide good thermal insulation, effective water transmission channels, and reliable light absorbance, and perform well as a high-quality solar steam evaporator with the evaporation rate of approximately 1.517 kg m-2 h-1 and the evaporation efficiency of approximately 98.27% under 1 kW m-2 solar illumination. Most importantly, we can control the pore size of the bottom layer by a simple free water evaporation method, so as to manipulate the water transport capacity of materials. There is flexibility to change the water content of the light-absorbing structure and further explore the influence of water supply on the interfacial heating performance of the evaporator, which provides more possibilities for the design and preparation of high-quality solar steam evaporators.
