In-Depth Mechanism Understanding for Potassium-Ion Batteries by Electroanalytical Methods and Advanced In Situ Characterization Techniques

Construction of High-Performance Anode of Potassium-Ion Batteries by Stripping Covalent Triazine Frameworks with Molten Salt

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are promising battery electrodes owing to their designable functional groups, tunable pore sizes, and exceptional stability. However, their practical use is limited because of the difficulty in establishing stable ion adsorption/desorption sites. In this study, a melt-salt-stripping process utilizing molten trichloro iron (FeCl3) is used to delaminate the layer-stacked structure of fluorinated covalent triazine framework (FCTF) and generate iron-based ion storage active sites. This process increases the interlayer spacing and uniformly deposits iron-containing materials, enhancing electron and ion transport. The resultant melt-FeCl3-stripped FCTF (Fe@FCTF) shows excellent performance as a potassium ion battery with a high capacity of 447 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and 257 mAh g-1 at 1.6 A g-1 and good cycling stability. Notably, molten-salt stripping is also effective in improving the CTF's Na+ and Li+ storage properties. A stepwise reaction mechanism of K/Na/Li chelation with C═N functional groups is proposed and verified by in situ X-ray diffraction testing (XRD), ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and theoretical calculations, illustrating that pyrazines and iron coordination groups play the main roles in reacting with K+/Na+/Li+ cations. These results conclude that the Fe@FCTF is a suitable anode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Revealing the Charge Storage Mechanism in Porous Carbon to Achieve Efficient K Ion Storage

Constructing a porous structure is considered an appealing strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of carbon anodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Nevertheless, the correlation between electrochemical K-storage performance and pore structure has not been well elucidated, which hinders the development of high-performance carbon anodes. Herein, various porous carbons are synthesized with porosity structures ranging from micropores to micro/mesopores and mesopores, and systematic investigations are conducted to establish a relationship between pore characteristics and K-storage performance. It is found that micropores fail to afford accessible active sites for K ion storage, whereas mesopores can provide abundant surface adsorption sites, and the enlarged interlayer spacing facilitates the intercalation process, thus resulting in significantly improved K-storage performances. Consequently, PCa electrode with a prominent mesoporous structure achieves the highest reversible capacity of 421.7 mAh g-1 and an excellent rate capability of 191.8 mAh g-1 at 5 C. Furthermore, the assembled potassium-ion hybrid capacitor realizes an impressive energy density of 151.7 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 398 W kg-1. The proposed work not only deepens the understanding of potassium storage in carbon materials with distinctive porosities but also paves a path toward developing high-performance anodes for PIBs with customized energy storage capabilities.

Recent development and applications of differential electrochemical mass spectrometry in emerging energy conversion and storage solutions

Electrochemical energy conversion and storage are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the sustainable future. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) offers an operando and cost-effective tool to monitor the evolution of gaseous/volatile intermediates and products during these processes. It can deliver potential-, time-, mass- and space-resolved signals which facilitate the understanding of reaction kinetics. In this review, we show the latest developments and applications of DEMS in various energy-related electrochemical reactions from three distinct perspectives. (I) What is DEMS addresses the working principles and key components of DEMS, highlighting the new and distinct instrumental configurations for different applications. (II) How to use DEMS tackles practical matters including the electrochemical test protocols, quantification of both potential and mass signals, and error analysis. (III) Where to apply DEMS is the focus of this review, dealing with concrete examples and unique values of DEMS studies in both energy conversion applications (CO2 reduction, water electrolysis, carbon corrosion, N-related catalysis, electrosynthesis, fuel cells, photo-electrocatalysis and beyond) and energy storage applications (Li-ion batteries and beyond, metal-air batteries, supercapacitors and flow batteries). The recent development of DEMS-hyphenated techniques and the outlook of the DEMS technique are discussed at the end. As DEMS celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024, we hope this review can offer electrochemistry researchers a comprehensive understanding of the latest developments of DEMS and will inspire them to tackle emerging scientific questions using DEMS.

3D Dense Encapsulated Architecture of 2D Bi Nanosheets Enabling Potassium-Ion Storage with Superior Volumetric and Areal Capacities

2D alloy-based anodes show promise in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Nevertheless, their low tap density and huge volume expansion cause insufficient volumetric capacity and cycling stability. Herein, a 3D highly dense encapsulated architecture of 2D-Bi nanosheets (HD-Bi@G) with conducive elastic networks and 3D compact encapsulation structure of 2D nano-sheets are developed. As expected, HD-Bi@G anode exhibits a considerable volumetric capacity of 1032.2 mAh cm-3, stable long-life span with 75% retention after 2000 cycles, superior rate capability of 271.0 mAh g-1 at 104 C, and high areal capacity of 7.94 mAh cm-2 (loading: 24.2 mg cm-2) in PIBs. The superior volumetric and areal performance mechanisms are revealed through systematic kinetic investigations, ex situ characterization techniques, and theorical calculation. The 3D high-conductivity elastic network with dense encapsulated 2D-Bi architecture effectively relieves the volume expansion and pulverization of Bi nanosheets, maintains internal 2D structure with fast kinetics, and overcome sluggish ionic/electronic diffusion obstacle of ultra-thick, dense electrodes. The uniquely encapsulated 2D-nanosheet structure greatly reduces K+ diffusion energy barrier and accelerates K+ diffusion kinetics. These findings validate a feasible approach to fabricate 3D dense encapsulated architectures of 2D-alloy nanosheets with conductive elastic networks, enabling the design of ultra-thick, dense electrodes for high-volumetric-energy-density energy storage.

Architectural design of anode materials for superior alkali-ion (Li/Na/K) batteries storage

Developing high-performance anode materials remains a significant challenge for clean energy storage systems. Herein, we investigated the (MXene/MoSe2@C) heterostructure hybrid nanostructure as a superior anode material for application in lithium, sodium, and potassium ion batteries (LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs). Moreover, the anode structure's stability was examined via the open-source Large-scale atomic/molecular massively Parallel Simulator code. Our results indicated that the migration of SIBs toward the anode material is significantly greater than other ions during charge and discharge cycles. Therefore, SIBs systems can be competitive with PIBs and LIBs systems. In addition, the average values of the potential energies for the anode materials/ions complexes are about ~ - 713.65, ~  - 2030.41, and ~ - 912.36 kcal mol-1 in systems LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs, respectively. This study provides a rational design strategy to develop high-performance anode materials in SIBs/PIBs/LIBs systems, which can be developed for other transition metal chalcogenide-based composites as a superior anode of alkali metal ion battery storage systems.

Confine, Defect, and Interface Manipulation of Fe3 Se4 /3D Graphene Targeting Fast and Stable Potassium-Ion Storage

The fast electrochemical kinetics behavior and long cycling life have been the goals in developing anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). On account of high electron conductivity and theoretical capacity, transition metal selenides have been deemed as one of the promising anode materials for PIBs. Herein, a systematic structural manipulation strategy, pertaining to the confine of Fe₃ Se₄ particles by 3D graphene and the dual phosphorus (P) doping to the Fe₃ Se₄ /3DG (DP-Fe₃ Se₄ /3DG), has been proposed to fulfill the efficient potassium-ion (K-ion) evolution kinetics and thus boost the K-ion storage performance. The theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the well-designed dual P doping interface can effectively promote K-ion adsorption behavior and provide a low energy barrier for K-ion diffusion. The insertion-conversion and adsorption mechanism for multi potassium storage behavior in DP-Fe₃ Se₄ /3DG composite has been also deciphered by combining the in situ/ex situ X-ray diffraction and operando Raman spectra evidences. As expected, the DP-Fe₃ Se₄ /3DG anode exhibits superior rate capability (120.2 mA h g^-1 at 10 A g^-1 ) and outstanding cycling performance (157.9 mA h g^-1 after 1000 cycles at 5 A g^-1 ).

Unique Spindle-Like Bismuth-Based Composite toward Ultrafast Potassium Storage

Bismuth (Bi)-based materials have attracted great attention as anodes in potassium ion batteries (PIBs) for their high theoretical capacity and suitable voltage range. Herein, the authors report a unique spindle-like structured Bi@N-doped carbon composite (SPB@NC) consisting of interconnected nano-Bi coated heteroatom-doped hard carbon layer via an interesting in situ carbon thermal reduction method. The special interconnected Bi nanoparticles gradually form porous structure with ample inner voids for accommodating volume variations while the N-doped carbon layer not only keeps the electrode stable, but also contributes to rapid electron/ion transfer. As a result, such a robust framework endows SPB@NC fast potassium storage with outstanding capacity of 276.5 mAh g^-1  at 30 A g^-1 (i.e., 1 min for discharge/charge) and durable cycling performance of 299.3 mAh g^-1  at 5 A g^-1  after 2000 cycles. Notably, a full cell assembled with potassium vanadate cathode is promising for practical applications. A series of ex situ techniques reveals the in-depth potassium storage mechanism and kinetics reactions. This work illuminates helpful insights into Bi-based anodes for PIBs.

Dual-Carbon confinement strategy of antimony anode material enabling advanced potassium ion storage

Antimony (Sb) has attracted considerable attention as an anode material for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, owing to the large radius of K⁺, apparent volume expansion occurs during the reaction between Sb and K⁺, which will undermine the stability of the electrode. Accordingly, a dual-carbon confinement strategy is regarded as an effective method for handling this issue. Herein, Sb is firstly captured by mesoporous carbon sphere (MCS) to form a composite of Sb/MCS, and then reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is adopted as an outer layer to wrap the Sb/MCS to obtain the dual-carbon confinement material (Sb/MCS@rGO). Given the synergistic confinement effects of the MCS and rGO, the Sb/MCS@rGO electrode realizes an excellent rate capacity of 341.9 mAh g^-1 at 1000 mA g^-1 and prominent cycling stability with around 100% retention at 50 mA g^-1 after 100 cycles. Besides, the discussion on galvanostatic charge-discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and ex-situ XRD illustrates the stepwise potassium storage mechanism of Sb. Benefiting from the dual-carbon confinement effects, the Sb/MCS@rGO electrode processes promising electrochemical reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the application of the Sb/MCS@rGO in full cells also demonstrates its superior rate capacity (212.3 mAh g^-1 at 1000 mA g^-1).

Lignin as Polymer Electrolyte Precursor for Stable and Sustainable Potassium Batteries

Potassium batteries show interesting peculiarities as large-scale energy storage systems and, in this scenario, the formulation of polymer electrolytes obtained from sustainable resources or waste-derived products represents a milestone activity. In this study, a lignin-based membrane is designed by crosslinking a pre-oxidized Kraft lignin matrix with an ethoxylated difunctional oligomer, leading to self-standing membranes that are able to incorporate solvated potassium salts. The in-depth electrochemical characterization highlights a wide stability window (up to 4 V) and an ionic conductivity exceeding 10^-3  S cm^-1 at ambient temperature. When potassium metal cell prototypes are assembled, the lignin-based electrolyte attains significant electrochemical performances, with an initial specific capacity of 168 mAh g^-1 at 0.05 A g^-1 and an excellent operation for more than 200 cycles, which is an unprecedented outcome for biosourced systems in potassium batteries.

FeSb2 Nanoparticles Embedded in 3D Porous Carbon Framework: An Robust Anode Material for Potassium Storage with Long Activation Process

Due to their characteristics of high capacity and appropriate potassiation/depotassiation potential, Sb-based materials have become a class of promising anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). However, the huge strain induced by potassiation/depotassiation limits their ability to periodically accept/release K⁺ . Herein, a composite with FeSb₂ nanoparticles embedded in a 3D porous carbon framework (FeSb₂ @3DPC) is successfully constructed as an extremely stable anode material for PIBs. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the design of nano and porous structures, the introduction of the inactive metal Fe, the firm anchoring of the FeSb₂ nanoparticles by the carbon material, and the incomplete reaction of the FeSb₂ , the FeSb₂ @3DPC can achieve an ultra-long cycle life of over 4000 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g^-1 . Furthermore, ex situ X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal a gradual activation process of FeSb₂ for potassium storage. Fortunately, after activation, the electrochemical polarization of the FeSb₂ @3DPC anode gradually alleviates and the capacitance-controlled charge storage mode further dominates compared with the diffusion-controlled mode, all of which promote the FeSb₂ @3DPC to maintain the stable potassium storage capability.
