Abstract
Broiler chickens have the genetic potential for significant weight gain over a very short period of time. As a result, they account for over 92 % of the world's poultry meat production in different parts of the world. Yet, to fully realise their growth potential, effective management practices are crucial, encompassing aspects like nutritious feeds, disease control, optimal temperature, and adequate housing. The purpose of the study was to determine the management practices associated with the survival and market weight of broiler chickens in small-scale production. Small-scale poultry production plays a significant role in poverty reduction and household nutrition in developing countries. One hundred and forty small-scale broiler farmers were visited for interviews in the Dodoma City. Employing a structured questionnaire, data on management practices was gathered, while past production records determined market weight and survival rates. Most chickens weighed 1.8-2.3 kg at the end of the production cycle, with a mean live weight of 2.0 kg. Heat provision to chick housing in the early growth stages increased both survival and market weight. Conversely, chicken vaccination and the farmer's experiences were correlated with an increased survival rate. Furthermore, higher feed quantities offered to growers and finishers were linked to greater market weight. It was concluded that enhancing knowledge among small-scale farmers through training and extension services has the potential to increase broiler productivity.

Abstract
1. The following study investigated the relationship between pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) and mitochondrial dynamics in broiler cardiomyocytes.2. An animal model for PHS was established by injecting broiler chickens with CM-32 cellulose particles. Broiler myocardial cells were cultured under hypoxic conditions to establish an in vitro model. The ascites heart index, histomorphology, mitochondrial ultrastructure, and mitochondrial dynamic-related gene and protein expression were evaluated.3. The myocardial fibres from PHS broilers had wider spaces and were wavy and twisted and the number of mitochondria increased. Compared with the control group, the gene and protein expression levels were decreased for Opa1, Mfn1, and Mfn2 in the myocardium of PHS broilers. The gene and protein expression was significantly increased for Drp1 and Mff.4. This study showed that PHS in broilers may cause myocardial mitochondrial dysfunction, specifically by diminishing mitochondrial fusion and enhancing fission, causing disturbances in the mitochondrial dynamics of the heart.

Abstract
Similarly to poultry industry, coccidiosis may cause significant economic losses also in the commercial quail industry, an emerging sector undergoing uneven development around the world. Although scant and mostly dated, the available literature reports detailed morphological and morphometric features of both oocysts and sporocysts of the Eimeria species hitherto recognized in Japanese quails, i.e. E. tsunodai, E. uzura, E. bateri, and E. fluminensis. Mixed infections are very common in the field and require an accurate differential diagnosis of diverse species of coccidia, identifying the highly pathogenic ones, in particular E. tsunodai (localized in the caeca), and E. uzura (localized in both caeca and small intestine). This goal is hampered by time-consuming laboratory procedures involving highly qualified staff and facilities, and poorly compatible with routine management practices in farmed quails. A supplemental difficulty is represented by the lack of nucleotide sequences available in GenBank. To overcome these issues, copromicroscopic and molecular analyses (amplifying the 18S rRNA region, and the internal transcribed spacers regions ITS1-5.8rRNA-ITS2) were performed on oocysts populations separately isolated from pools of 12 caecal and 12 cloacal contents collected from 240 naturally infected laying Japanese quails. Data on morphological and morphometric features of 1,000 sporulated oocysts were statistically compared, demonstrating the presence of different Eimeria species colonizing the 2 intestinal tracts. This result was also confirmed by PCR and phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. Overall results allowed to hypothesize the presence of E. uzura in our Japanese quails. Although a certain identification at species level was not obtained, the present study demonstrates that reasonable turnaround times of monitoring procedures performed on Japanese quail farms, shedding light on the in vivo and post-mortem differential diagnosis of coccidiosis can be achieved, and provide obvious benefits in disease understanding and control.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine effects of various daylight exposure during the 24-h light-dark (L-D) cycle on growth performance, skeletal health, and welfare state in broilers. Environmental photoperiod and related circadian clock, the 24-h L-D cycle, are important factors in maintaining productive performance, pathophysiological homeostasis, and psychological reaction in humans and animals. Currently, various lighting programs as management tools for providing a satisfactory environmental condition have been used in commercial broiler production. Four hundred thirty-two 1-day-old Rose 308 broiler chicks were assigned to 24 pens (18 birds/pen). The pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 thermal and lighting control rooms, then the birds were exposed to (n = 6): 1) 12L, 2) 16L, 3) 18L, or 4) 20L at 15 d of age. Lighting program effects on bird body weight, behavioral patterns, bone health, and stress levels were evaluated from d 35 to d 45, respectively. The birds of 12L as well as 16L groups, reared under short photoperiods close to the natural 24-h L-D cycle, had improved production performance, leg bone health, and suppressed stress reaction compared to the birds of both 18L and 20L groups. Especially, 12L birds had heavier final body weight and averaged daily weight gain (P < 0.05), higher BMD and BMC with longer and wider femur (P < 0.05), lower H/L ratio (P < 0.05), and more birds reached the observer during the touch test (P < 0.05) but spent shorter latency during the tonic immobility test (P < 0.05). Taken together, the data suggest that supplying 12 h as well as 16L of daily light improves performance and health while decreasing stress levels in broilers, making it a potentially suitable approach for broiler production.

Abstract
In the present study, we evaluated the antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effects of garlic and dill in comparison with atorvastatin to combat lipogenesis in broiler chickens. A total of 400 1-day-old chicks (Ross 308 strain) were randomly distributed into four experimental diets. Dietary treatments included a control diet, the control diet plus atorvastatin at 20 mg/kg, the control diet plus garlic dry powder (GDP) at 7.5 g/kg, and the control diet plus dill dry powder (DDP) at 7.5 g/kg. Chicks were maintained on experimental diets for 42 days under the recommended environmental conditions set out by the strain management manual. The results showed that weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and duodenal, jejunal, and ileal dimensions of villi (height, width, and the surface absorptive area) were improved by in-feed atorvastatin, GDP, or DDP when compared to the control (P < 0.05). The inclusion of atorvastatin or phytobiotic products increased circulatory levels of nitric oxide (NO) but decreased circulatory levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), triacylglycerol (TAG), and low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL), with concomitant reductions in the T, R, and S waves amplitudes in the Lead 2 electrocardiogram (ECG) (P < 0.05). Dietary supplements caused an up-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) but reduced the expression of key hepatic lipogenic enzymes (fatty acid synthase (FAS) and hydroxy-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) (P < 0.05). In conclusion, feed supplementation with atorvastatin, GDP, or DDP suppressed lipogenesis, enhanced antioxidant response, and improved gut and cardio-pulmonary function in broiler chicks subjected to hypobaric hypoxia.

Abstract
Ascites syndrome (AS) is a metabolic disease observed mainly in fast-growing broilers. The heart is one of the most important target organs of the disease. The goal of this study was to evaluate the metabolic function of the right ventricles in clinical ascitic broilers. HE staining was performed to observe histopathological changes in the right ventricle of the heart, while Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK), as well as other key enzymes of energy metabolic pathways (i.e., glycolytic pathway: HK2, PFK1, PFK2, and PKM2; the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) pathway: OGDH, IDH2, and CS; and the fatty acid oxidation pathway: CPT-1A and ACC) in myocardial tissue. The histopathological examination of the myocardia of ascitic broilers revealed disoriented myocardial cells in the myofibril structure and a large number of blood cells deposited in the intermyofibrillar vessels, suggesting right heart failure in ascitic broilers. The Western blotting analysis demonstrated significantly increased levels of MIF and p-AMPK in the myocardia of ascitic broilers compared to those of the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the protein expression of key enzymes was dramatically increased in the glycolytic and fatty acid oxidation pathways, while the protein expression of key enzymes in the TCA cycle pathway was decreased in the ascitic broiler group. These findings suggest enhanced glycolysis and fatty acid oxidation metabolism, and a diminished TCA cycle, in the myocardia of broiler chickens with ascites syndrome.
