Background

Biosynthesized nanoparticles are gaining popularity due to their distinctive biological applications as well as bioactive secondary metabolites from natural products that contribute in green synthesis.

Methodology

This study reports a facile, ecofriendly, reliable, and cost-effective synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs), and polymeric PVP-silver-copper oxide nanocomposite using ethanol extract of seaweed Laurencia dendroidea and were evaluated for antiprotozoal, anticancer and photocatalytic potential. The nanostructures of the AgNPs, CuONPs, and polymeric PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite were confirmed by different spectroscopic and microscopic procedures.

Results

The UV-vis spectrum displayed distinct absorption peaks at 440, 350, and 470 nm for AgNPs, CuONPs, and polymeric Ag-CuO nanocomposite, respectively. The average particles size of the formed AgNPs, CuONPs, and Ag-CuO nanocomposite was 25, 28, and 30 nm, respectively with zeta potential values -31.7 ± 0.6 mV, -17.6 ± 4.2 mV, and -22.9 ± 4.45 mV. The microscopic investigation of biosynthesized nanomaterials revealed a spherical morphological shape with average crystallite sizes of 17.56 nm (AgNPs), 18.21 nm (CuONPs), and 25.46 nm (PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite). The antiprotozoal potential of green synthesized nanomaterials was examined against Leishmania amazonensis and Trypanosoma cruzi parasites. The polymeric PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite exerted the highest antiprotozoal effect with IC₅₀ values of 17.32 ± 1.5 and 17.48 ± 4.2 µM, in contrast to AgNPs and CuONPs. The anticancer potential of AgNPs, CuONPs, and polymeric PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite against HepG2 cancer cell lines revealed that all the nanomaterials were effective and the highest anticancer potential was displayed by PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite with IC₅₀ values 91.34 µg mL^-1 at 200 µg mL^-1 concentration. Additionally, PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite showed strong photocatalytic effect.

Conclusion

Overall, this study suggested that the biogenic synthesized nanomaterials AgNPs, CuONPs, and polymeric PVP-Ag-CuO nanocomposite using ethanol extract of seaweed L. dendroidea possesses promising antiprotozoal anticancer and photocatalytic effect and could be further exploited for the development of antiprotozoal and anticancer therapeutics agents.

Combined experimental and TD-DFT/DMOl3 investigations, optical properties, and photoluminescence behavior of a thiazolopyrimidine derivative

We present here the FT-IR, DFT computation, XRD, optical, and photophysical characterization of a heterocyclic compound with thienopyrimidine and pyran moieties. TD-DFT/DMOl³ and TD-DFT/CASTEP computations were used to study the geometry of isolated and dimer molecules and their optical behavior. The indirect (3.93 eV) and direct (3.29 eV) optical energy bandgaps, HOMO-LUMO energy gap (3.02 eV), and wavelength of maximum absorption (353 nm) were determined in the gas phase with M062X/6-31+G (d, p). A thin film of the studied molecule was studied using XRD, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The average crystallite size was found as 74.95 nm. Also, the photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that the compound exhibited different emission bands at the visible range with different intensities depending on the degree of molecular aggregation. For instance, solutions with different concentrations emitted blue, cyan, and green light. On the other hand, the solid-state material produced a dual emission with comparable intensities at λ_max = 455, 505, and 621 nm to cover the entire visible range and produce white emission from a single material with CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.32) that are very similar to the ideal pure white light. Consequently, these findings could lead to the development of more attractive new luminous materials.

Enhanced biosafety of silica coated gadolinium based nanoparticles

One of the most important and novel approaches of biomedical engineering is the development of new, effective and non-invasive medical diagnosis abilities, and treatments that have such requirements as advanced technologies for tumor imaging. Gadolinium (Gd) compounds can be used as MRI contrast agents, however the release of Gd³⁺ ions presents some adverse side effects such as renal failure, pancreatitis or local necrosis. The main aim of the work was the development and optimization of Gadolinium based nanoparticles coated with silica to be used as bioimaging agent. Gd based nanoparticles were prepared through a precipitation method and afterwards, these nanoparticles were covered with silica, using Stöber method with ammonia and functionalized with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Results showed that nanoparticles were homogeneous regarding chemical composition, silica layer thickness, total size and morphology. Also, silica coating was successfully not degraded after 4 weeks at pH 5.5, 6.0 and 7.4, contrary to GdOHCO₃ nanoparticles that degraded. Regarding the in vitro cell tests, very good cell proliferation and viability were observed. In conclusion, the results showed that Gd based nanoparticles coated with silica for imaging applications were successfully obtained under a well-controlled method. Furthermore, silica coating may enhance magnetic nanoparticles biosafety because it avoids GdOHCO₃ degradation into harmful products (such as Gd³⁺ ions) at physiological conditions.

A Review of Current Research into the Biogenic Synthesis of Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles via Marine Algae and Seagrasses

Today there is a growing need to develop reliable, sustainable, and ecofriendly protocols for manufacturing a wide range of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. The biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles via nanobiotechnology based techniques has the potential to deliver clean manufacturing technologies. These new clean technologies can significantly reduce environmental contamination and decease the hazards to human health resulting from the use of toxic chemicals and solvents currently used in conventional industrial fabrication processes. The largely unexplored marine environment that covers approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is home to many naturally occurring and renewable marine plants. The present review summarizes current research into the biogenic synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles via marine algae (commonly known as seaweeds) and seagrasses. Both groups of marine plants contain a wide variety of biologically active compounds and secondary metabolites that enables these plants to act as biological factories for the manufacture of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles.

Vitis vinifera Assisted Silver Nanoparticles with Antibacterial and Antiproliferative Activity against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells

Vitis vinifera extract assisted silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were biosynthesized that was confirmed primarily by color change and a sharp plasmon absorption band was found at 449 nm. Biosynthesized AgNPs shape was spherical and the particle size of 17 nm in average was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Functional groups of AgNPs were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Streptococcus aureus was the most sensitive bacteria towards the assisted V. vinifera AgNPs as their growth was 90% inhibited at 100 μg/mL concentration. That was also confirmed by the zone of inhibition study. Up to 96 h, no biofilm was observed for K. pneumoniae at 40 μg/mL of AgNPs. Although AgNPs showed a mild toxicity against brine shrimp nauplii, it showed a remarkable level of antiproliferative activity against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells.

Calcium carbonate nanoparticles as cancer drug delivery system

INTRODUCTION

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) has broad biomedical utilizations owing to its availability, low cost, safety, biocompatibility, pH-sensitivity and slow biodegradability. Recently, there has been widespread interest in their application as drug delivery systems for different groups of drugs. Among them, CaCO3 nanoparticles have exhibited promising potential as drug carriers targeting cancer tissues and cells. The pH-dependent properties, alongside the potential to be functionalized with targeting agents give them the unique property that can be used in targeted delivery systems for anticancer drugs. Also, due to the slow degradation of CaCO3 matrices, these nanoparticles can be used as sustained release systems to retain drugs in cancer tissues for longer times after administration.

AREAS COVERED

Development of drug delivery carriers using CaCO3 nanoparticles has been reviewed. The current state of CaCO3 nanoparticles as cancer drug delivery systems with focus on their special properties like pH-sensitivity and biodegradability has also been evaluated.

EXPERT OPINION

According to our review, CaCO3 nanoparticles, owing to their special characteristics, will have a potential role in safe and efficient cancer treatment in future.
