Temporal mechanisms influencing gender expression and pollen flow within a self-incompatible perennial, Amianthium muscaetoxicum (Liliaceae)

Reproductive biology and pollinators in two enantiostylous Qualea species (Vochysiaceae) in the Brazilian Cerrado

Enantiostyly is a floral polymorphism in which two floral forms in the same species differ in deflection of the stigma to right or left position. In monomorphic enantiostylous plants, flowers of the two morphs occur within the same individual, usually in the same proportion. In self-compatible species the function of monomorphic enantiostyly is proposed to increase outcrossing rates and offer a reproductive advantage under pollination limitation. Enantiostylous species are usually self-compatible and show heteranthery, with poricide anthers and pollen as pollinator reward; however, there are families, such as Vochysiaceae, that have different characteristics. We analysed the reproductive system and pollination biology of Qualea parviflora and Q. multiflora, two enantiostylous species from the Brazilian Cerrado that have specific morphological and physiological traits. For this, we characterized flower traits, performed hand pollinations and studied floral visitors. We found no differences between morphs in the proportion of flowers, nectar produced or its concentration, pollen quantity and fruit set. Both species were self-incompatible and quite generalist regarding floral visitors. Enantiostyly in self-incompatible plants seems to confer a reproductive advantage by reducing self-interference resulting from stigma clogging. This novel result helps to expand our knowledge on this complex floral polymorphism and opens new avenues for future research on this topic.

Importance of Pollinator-Mediated Interspecific Pollen Transfer for Angiosperm Evolution

Understanding how pollen moves between species is critical to understanding speciation, diversification, and evolution of flowering plants. For co-flowering species that share pollinators, competition through interspecific pollen transfer (IPT) can profoundly impact floral evolution, decreasing female fitness via heterospecific pollen deposition on stigmas and male fitness via pollen misplacement during visits to heterospecific flowers. The pollination literature demonstrates that such reproductive interference frequently selects for reproductive character displacement in floral traits linked to pollinator attraction, pollen placement, and mating systems and has also revealed that IPT between given pairs of species is typically asymmetric. More recent work is starting to elucidate its importance to the speciation process, clarifying the link between IPT and current and historical patterns of hybridization, the evolution of phenotypic novelty through adaptive introgression, and the rise of reproductive isolation. Our review aims to stimulate further research on IPT as a ubiquitous mechanism that plays a central role in angiosperm diversification.

Self-pollen interference is absent in wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum, Brassicaceae), a species with sporophytic self-incompatibility

Explaining the diversity of mating systems and floral forms in flowering plants is a long-standing concern of evolutionary biologists. One topic of interest is the conditions under which self-pollination can interfere with seed set for flowering plants with a self-incompatibility system. We investigated the effect of self-pollen interference for wild radish, Raphanus raphanistrum, which has sporophytic self-incompatibility. We performed pollinations and determined seed set for plants grown in the greenhouse, using pollen mixtures representing either self- with outcross-pollen or outcross-pollen alone. Stigmas were collected for a subset of pollinated flowers to determine the number of pollen grains applied. Average seed set for the self/cross (5.13 seeds/pollination) and cross treatments (5.09 seeds/pollination) did not differ significantly. Stigmatic pollen loads averaged around 700 grains, an amount close to observed natural pollen loads on R. raphanistrum. We concluded that for R. raphanistrum in natural populations, self-pollen is unlikely to interfere with outcross-pollen success. This study is the first to investigate effects of self-pollen interference on seed set for a homomorphic species with sporophytic self-incompatibility where rejection occurs at the stigmatic surface.

Life history, floral development, and mating system in Clarkia xantiana (Onagraceae): do floral and whole-plant rates of development evolve independently?

Autogamously self-fertilizing taxa have evolved from outcrossing progenitors at least 12 times in the annual wildflower genus, Clarkia (Onagraceae). In C. xantiana, individuals of the selfing subspecies (ssp. parviflora) flower at an earlier age, produce successive flowers more rapidly, and produce flowers that complete their development more rapidly than their outcrossing counterparts (ssp. xantiana). Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain the joint evolution of these whole-plant and individual floral traits. The accelerated life cycle hypothesis proposes that selection favoring a short life cycle in environments with short growing seasons (such as those typically occupied by parviflora) has independently favored genotypes with early reproduction, synchronous flower production, and rapidly developing, self-fertilizing flowers. The correlated response to selection hypothesis similarly proposes that selection in environments with short growing seasons favors early reproduction, but that rapid floral development and increased selfing evolve as correlated responses to selection due to genetic linkage (or pleiotropy) affecting both whole-plant and floral development. We conducted a greenhouse experiment using maternal families from two field populations of each subspecies to examine covariation between floral and whole-plant traits within and among populations to seek support for either of these hypotheses. Our results are consistent with the accelerated life cycle hypothesis but not with the correlated response to selection hypothesis.

An experimental evaluation of self-interference in Narcissus assoanus: functional and evolutionary implications

Floral traits that reduce self-pollination in hermaphroditic plants have usually been interpreted as mechanisms that limit the genetic consequences of self-fertilization. However, the avoidance of sexual conflict between female and male function (self-interference) may also represent an important selection pressure for the evolution of floral traits, particularly in self-incompatible species. Here, we use experimental manipulations to investigate self-interference in Narcissus assoanus, a self-incompatible species with a stigma-height dimorphism in which the degree of spatial separation between sex organs (herkogamy) differs strikingly between the long- and short-styled morphs (hereafter L- and S-morphs). We predicted that weak herkogamy in the L-morph would cause greater self-pollination and hence self-interference. Experimental self-pollination reduced seed set when it occurred prior to, or simultaneously with, cross-pollination in the L-morph, but only if it occurred prior to cross-pollination in the S-morph. In the field, autonomous self-pollination was greater in the L-morph than the S-morph, but we found no evidence that self-interference reduced maternal or paternal fitness in either morph. One-day-old flowers of the L-morph have reduced stigma receptivity and hence exhibit protandry, whereas stigma receptivity and anther dehiscence are concurrent in the S-morph. This suggests that the two style morphs have alternative strategies for reducing self-interference: dichogamy in the L-morph and herkogamy in the S-morph. These results provide insight into the mechanisms that reduce sexual conflict in hermaphrodite plants and are of significance for understanding the evolution and maintenance of sexual polymorphisms.

The effects of stigma age on receptivity in Silene alba (Caryophyllaceae)

Silene alba, a perennial, dioecious plant, produces flowers that open in the evening and can remain open and receptive to pollination for up to 5 d, though in hot and dry conditions the flowers will wilt during the day only to reopen night after night. In the field, it is visited by two different kinds of pollinators with differential success: moths visit the flowers at night, and their movements result in broad pollen dispersal and large seed production, whereas bees, wasps, and flies visit the flowers in the mornings and have decreased pollination effectiveness. However, this differential success may be due to a decrease in stigmatic receptivity soon after the flowers open. We performed controlled pollinations to determine the effect of stigma age on pollen germination and seed set. We pollinated flowers at 12-h intervals up to 120 h and divided these into two sets: from one set, we removed stigmas 24 h after pollination to examine percentage of pollen germination. The second set of flowers was allowed to produce fruits, and the seeds were counted and weighed. Pollen germination declined significantly with stigma age, but there was no significant effect of stigma age at pollination on the number or mass of resulting seeds. Thus, the decreased pollination success of bees is not due to a decrease in stigmatic receptivity but is most likely a result of pollinator inefficiency.

Demographics of pollen tube growth inCucurbita pepo

Pollen tube growth rates and pollen tube attrition were examined in Cucurbita pepo plants grown in an experimental garden. Two separate studies were performed utilizing controlled hand-pollinations. First, female flowers were hand-pollinated and collected at intervals over a 22-h period. Examination of stained pollen tubes in these pistils under reflected UV light revealed variation in growth rate: after approximately 7 h, the fastest growing pollen tubes grew at nearly twice the rate of the mass of the pollen tubes. The faster growing tubes reached the top of the ovary well ahead of most of the pollen tubes. Second, density of pollen application was varied and counts of germinated pollen and pollen tubes were made at four points from the stigmatic surface to the receptacle. Attrition was high for all pollen densities, but significantly higher rates occurred at high and medium densities just below the stigmatic surface. Pollen tube attrition at other points in the pistil was associated with constrictions in the stylar tissue and possibly with levels of nutrients in the pistil. INCIDENCE OF MONOECY AND DICHOGAMY IN RELATION TO SELF-FERTILIZATION IN ANGIOSPERMS

The evolution of many floral traits, including monoecy and dichogamy, has been attributed to selection for avoidance of self-fertilization. If this explanation is correct, monoecy and dichogamy should be uncommon among self-incompatible species because physiological barriers prevent self-fertilization in such species. In fact, self-fertility was independent of sexual system in a sample of 588 hermaphroditic and monoecious angiosperms. Overall, dichogamy was also equally common among self-incompatible and self-compatible species. When the different forms of dichogamy were analyzed separately, only intrafloral protogyny was associated with self-compatibility. This form of dichogamy is less common among angiosperms than intrafloral protandry, which is probably less effective at reducing self-fertilization. Thus, avoidance of self-fertilization has probably been less important in the evolution of monoecy and most forms of dichogamy than other factors, such as avoidance of pollen-pistil interference, and flexibility of resource allocation to male and female functions.

The effects of pollination distance on seed production in three populations of Amianthium muscaetoxicum (Liliaceae)

We examined the effects of varying pollination distances on seed production and its components in three populations of the perennial lily Amianthium muscaetoxicum. We performed hand pollinations using pollen from near neighbors and from plants separated by 5, 15, and 60 meters. Pollination by near neighbors reduced fruit set and the numbers of seeds per fruit in comparison to other treatments in two of the three populations; variation in pollination distance beyond near-neighbor pollination produced no effect. In the third population, in which nearneighbor pollination did not affect seed production, nearneighbor pollination reduced seed weight by 11%, compared to other pollination distances. Seed weights from the 5-, 15-, and 60-m pollination treatments did not differ, and pollination distance did not affect seed weight in the other two populations. The effects of pollination-distance treatments explained a very small proportion of the variance in seed production and seed weight. Heterogeneity among individual plants, despite full hand pollination of every plant, accounted for much more variance (by one to two orders of magnitude) than variation in pollination distance.
