The occurrence and significance of Campylobacter jejuni in man and animals

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter strains isolated from broilers in the southern part of Japan from 1995 to 1999

Cecal contents (16 samples/each flock) of broilers derived from 212 flocks were investigated for colonization of Campylobacter from 1995 to 1999 in the southern part of Japan, and the isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibilities. C. jejuni-positive flocks numbered 42 (19.8%) and C. coli-positive ones 26 (12.3%); Campylobacter spp. were recovered from 68 flocks (32.1%) in total. MICs of ampicillin, erythromycin (EM), tetracycline, nalidixic acid (NA), norfloxacin (NFLX), and ofloxacin (OFLX) to these 68 Campylobacter isolates were determined. Quinolone-resistant Campylobacter isolates numbered 22 (32.4%). All the isolates except one were cross-resistant to NA, OFLX, and NFLX. A high frequency of quinolone-resistance was found in both C. jejuni and C. coli, whereas a high level of EM-resistance was found in only C. coli strains. All C. jejuni isolates were sensitive to EM.

Biochemical characteristics, serogroup distribution, antibiotic susceptibility and age-related significance of Campylobacter strains causing diarrhoea in humans in Hungary

During August and September 1995, 111 thermopilic campylobacters from stool samples of patients suffering from diarrhoea were cultured and f1amined. Biochemical characteristics, serological distribution and antibiotic susceptibility of the strains were examined and the age distribution of the patients affected was recorded. Most of the strains, i.e. 101 isolates (91%) proved to be Campylobacter (C.) jejuni, whereas 10 strains (9%) were C. coli. On the basis of their heat-stable antigens, 66 strains (65.3%) of C. jejuni could be assigned to 17 serogroups, of which serogroups 2 (15 strains, 14.8%) and 8 (10 strains, 9.9%) occurred most frequently. All isolates examined were susceptible to erythromycin whereas susceptibility to other antibiotics varied greatly. Children under five years of age (59 cases = 53.1%) were most frequently affected. During 1995, altogether 11,976 human Campylobacter cases were recorded in Hungary which means a prevalence of 114/100,000. The results suggest that the great majority of cases of Campylobacter diarrhoea is caused by C. jejuni strains while C. coli strains have much less significance. The serotype distribution of C. jejuni strains causing diarrhoea is very wide. If treatment is needed the best choice at present seems to be erythromycin.

Food preservation using ionizing radiation

Irradiation processing has been researched extensively and is now in use worldwide for many food commodities. Irradiation has been successfully used to reduce pathogenic bacteria, eliminate parasites, decrease postharvest sprouting, and extend the shelf life of fresh perishable foods. Although food irradiation is widely accepted in world food markets, U.S. markets have been slower to accept the idea of irradiated food products. For fruits and vegetables, irradiation is not a cure for shelf life problems; cost and quality problems damage preclude its general use. It appears that the most likely use of irradiation in fruits and vegetables is as an insect control in those commodities for which there is no effective alternative method. For grains such as rice and wheat, irradiation has been used primarily to control insect infestation when insects have been shown to develop resistance to the traditional fumigation methods. Treatment of spices with irradiation doses of 10 kGy has proved to extend shelf life without causing significant changes in sensory or chemical quality. Higher doses that effectively sterilize spices, however, may cause undesirable chemical and sensorial changes. For meat, especially red meat, irradiation is considered a viable alternative in the effort to improve the safety of meat products. With time, the authors believe that economic realities and the technical superiority of irradiation for specific poultry products will lead to public acceptance of the process. Irradiation of seafood products is still being considered for approval by the USFDA, although it is currently used in Asian and European markets, especially for shrimp. It is our belief that scientifically based research in food irradiation and the positive results thereof will also prove economical in the twenty-first century. As we move to a more peaceful world with reduced threat of nuclear holocaust, these valid opinions will prevail and will overshadow the distortions and misinformation generated by the opponents of irradiation.

Campylobacter infections in calves, piglets, lambs and kids in Trinidad

Faeces or rectal swabs from 689 diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic animals were cultured for thermophilic campylobacters and their antibiograms were determined. Three hundred and fifteen (45.7%) samples were positive for Campylobacter. Piglets had the highest prevalence, 79.3% (233/294) and lambs, the lowest with 17.9% (15/84) being positive. The difference was statistically significant (P < or = 0.01; chi 2). In calves, 20.5% (60/293) and in kids 38.9% (7/18) were positive for campylobacters. The prevalence of infection was not significantly (P > or = 0.05; chi 2) different between diarrhoeic (46.1%) and non-diarrhoeic (45.1%) animals nor between male (47.5%) and female (43.8%). The frequency of isolation of campylobacters harvested from semi-intensively managed animals (75.4%) was, however, significantly higher (P < or = 0.001; chi 2) than from intensively or extensively managed animals. Overall, C. coli strains (32.8%) were more frequently isolated than C. jejuni strains (12.9%) and the difference was significant (P < or = 0.001; chi 2). Biotype I accounted for 67.3% (152/226) of C. coli and 64.0% (57/89) of C. jejuni strains isolated. A total of 245 (77.8%) strains of Campylobacter exhibited resistance to one or more antibiotics and was highest to streptomycin (76.5%), kanamycin (28.6%) and neomycin (26.7%). It was concluded that Campylobacter infections were widespread in livestock in Trinidad, particularly C. coli in piglets.

Serogroups of Campylobacter jejuni from man and animals

A total of 186 campylobacter strains from aborted calf and sheep fetuses, from scouring dogs, rabbits and man, and from retailed poultry were isolated and examined biochemically and serologically for heat stable antigens. Immune sera were produced in rabbits against Penner reference strains from 1 to 60, and against two field isolates. Out of 186 biochemically tested strains 179 (96.2%) proved C. jejuni and only 6 (3.2%) C. coli. One strain has been identified as C. laridis. In cattle and sheep 3.2 and 21.7% respectively of all campylobacter abortions were due to C. jejuni infection. The same agent caused 12.7% of diarrhoea of dogs. The campylobacter infection rate of freshly slaughtered and dressed chicken varied between 25 and 64.3%. Out of the serologically examined 140 C. jejuni strains 118 (84.3%) could be assigned to 16 Penner serogroups and 13 (9.3%) to 2 further serogroups. Serogroups 8 (31.4%), 1 (19.3%) and 2 (12.1%) occurred most frequently. The human isolates represented the widest serotype distribution, as 32 tested strains belonged to 12 serogroups. All those serogroups which caused abortion or diarrhoea in animals or were isolated from poultry carcases were isolated also from man with diarrhoea, but some serogroups were found only in man.

Prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni in eggs and poultry meat in New York State

The presence of Campylobacter jejuni was tested for but not isolated from any of 276 eggs sampled from 23 egg farms in New York State. The presence of C. jejuni was evaluated in broilers, kosher broilers, spent layers, Peking ducks, and turkeys. Four of five poultry dressing plants tested showed positive growth of C. jejuni on the 25-carcass samples at various stages of processing. Twenty to 100% of live birds sampled contained C. jejuni on the skin but 90 to 100% were contaminated after scalding and defeathering operations from contaminated birds and equipment. A three to four-fold increase in carcass contamination was observed after evisceration. The number of C. jejuni on the carcasses decreased after washing and chilling. The organisms did not survive the salting, rinsing, and chilling operations in a kosher processing plant. Several pieces of equipment, i.e., shackles, eviscerating troughs, and cooling tanks were contaminated with C. jejuni. This study illustrates how C. jejuni may be transmitted from the live bird to the final poultry product.

Decontamination of Campylobacter jejuni on chicken drumsticks using chemicals and radiation

A trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of four disinfectants and radiation to reduce the level of C. jejuni contamination on poultry meat. Two levels of each treatment were applied to chicken drumsticks inoculated with a known concentration of a strain of Campylobacter jejuni, biotype 1, isolated from a human patient with diarrhea. Radiation using a cobalt-60 source at a level of 0.5 KGy effected a 99% surface reduction in C. jejuni. With a mean initial surface contamination level of 1.1 X 10(3) Colony Forming Units/cm2, 1 KGy completely eliminated C. jejuni. Glutaraldehyde at 0.5% concentration for 30 minutes had an efficacy similar to the lower dose of radiation. Chlorine showed a negligible effect on C. jejuni. Succinic acid and Poly (hexamethylenebiguanide hydrochloride) were statistically similar in their effectiveness, ranking between glutaraldehyde and chlorine. These results strongly indicate that, of the alternatives tested, low-dose radiation is the method of choice for reducing Campylobacter contamination of poultry products.

Zoonoses acquired from pet primates

Laws regulating the importation of primates have drastically reduced the number of primates seen as pets and, thus, the hazard both to the potential owner and veterinarian. Active disease and latent carrier states in primates potentially have severe consequences for the contact person. This potential for human transmission makes it imperative that medical and veterinary professionals collaborate to educate the public on the danger of the primate as a pet.

Campylobacter jejuni contamination of eggs

Contamination of commercial table eggs with a fecal suspension containing 4.4 X 10(6) CFU/g Campylobacter jejuni resulted in shell penetration in 3/70 eggs and recovery of the organism from homogenized egg contents in 1/70 eggs. Viability of C. jejuni on the shell surface was retained for only 16 hours, attributed to desiccation of the fecal suspension. A field survey of three commercial laying farms and their associated egg-packing plants showed that hens demonstrated to be fecal shedders of C. jejuni (12% to 62% incidence) did not produce infected eggs. The organism could not be detected in the environment of the packing plant, including grading machinery and effluent.
