Impacts of Sediment Organic Matter Content and pH on Ecotoxicity of Coexposure of TiO2 Nanoparticles and Cadmium to Freshwater Snails Bellamya aeruginosa

Evaluation of the teratogenic potency of bulk zinc oxide and its nanoparticles on embryos of the freshwater snail, Helisoma duryi

Bulk zinc oxide (ZnO-BPs) and its nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are frequently used in various products for humans. Helisoma duryi embryos can serve as effective model organisms for studying the toxicity of NPs. This study aimed to compare the teratogenic potency of ZnO-BPs and ZnO NPs in the embryonic stages of H. duryi to evaluate the utility of this snail as a bioindicator for ZnO-NPs in the aquatic environment. The mechanisms of teratogenesis were evaluated by determination of the LC50, studying the effect of sub-lethal concentrations of both ZnO forms on the embryos, and studying their enzyme activity, oxidative stress, and biochemical analysis. The SDS-PAGE electrophoresis was undertaken to assess the effect of ZnO-BPs and ZnO NPs on protein synthesis. The results revealed that the veliger stage of H. duryi is the specific stage for bulk and nano ZnO. ZnO-NPs proved to be more toxic to snails' embryos than ZnO-BPs. Exposure to ZnO influences specific types of defects in development, which in the case of BPs are far less drastic than those caused by NPs. Thus, the toxicity of ZnO-NPs in embryonic development is due to their unique physicochemical properties. The observed malformations include mainly hydropic malformation, exogastrulation, monophthalmia, shell misshapen, and cell lyses. Almost all tested oxidative biomarkers significantly changed, revealing that ZnONPs display more oxidative stress than ZnO-BPs. Also, the low concentration of ZnO induces many disturbances in the organic substances of veliger larvae, such as a decrease in the total protein and total lipid levels and an increase in the glycogen level. The results indicated that ZnO-BPs increase the number of protein bands. Conversely, ZnO-NPs concealed one band from treated egg masses, which was found in the control group. Embryos of snail are an appropriate model to control freshwater snails. This study demonstrates that H. duryi embryos can serve as effective model organisms to study the toxicity of ZnO-NPs.

Interactive effects of cadmium and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on hepatic tissue in rats: Ameliorative role of coenzyme 10 via modulation of the NF-κB and TNFα pathway

This study investigated the effect of oral dosing of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) and cadmium (Cd2+) on rat liver and the potential protective role of coenzyme Q10 (CQ10) against TNPs and Cd2+-induced hepatic injury. Seventy male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into seven groups and orally given distilled water, corn oil, CQ10 (10 mg/kg b.wt), TNPs (50 mg/kg b.wt), Cd2+ (5 mg/kg b.wt), TNPs + Cd2+, or TNPs + Cd2++CQ10 by gastric gavage for 60 successive days. The results showed that individual or mutual exposure to TNPs and Cd2+ significantly increased the serum levels of various hepatic enzymes and lipids, depleted the hepatic content of antioxidant enzymes, and increased malondialdehyde. Moreover, the hepatic titanium and Cd2+ content were increased considerably in TNPs and/or Cd2+-exposed rats. Furthermore, marked histopathological perturbations with increased immunoexpression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nuclear factor kappa B were evident in TNPs and/or Cd2+-exposed rats. However, CQ10 significantly counteracted the damaging effect of combined exposure of TNPs and Cd2+ on the liver. The study concluded that TNPs and Cd2+ exposure harm hepatic function and its architecture, particularly at their mutual exposure, but CQ10 could be a candidate protective agent against TNPs and Cd2+ hepatotoxic impacts.

Protective effects of polymer amendment on specific metabolites in soil and cotton leaves under cadmium contamination

Polymer materials have great potential for soil heavy metal contamination remediation, but the metabolic mechanism by which polymer amendments regulate the responses of soil-plant systems to cadmium (Cd) stress is still unclear. To clarify the metabolic mechanism by which a self-developed soluble polymer amendment (PA) remediates Cd contamination in cotton fields, the common and differential metabolites in soil and cotton leaves were analyzed during the critical period of cotton growth (flowering and bolling stage) in a field experiment. The results showed that Cd stress increased Cd concentration in the soil-cotton system, and reduced enzyme activity in soil and cotton leaves. Besides, Cd stress also reduced the abundance of α-linolenic acid in soil and the abundance of 2-Oxoarginine and S-Adenosylmethionine in cotton leaves. These ultimately led to reductions in weight, boll number, yield, and fiber elongation. However, the application of PA to the Cd-contaminated soil significantly reduced the soil exchangeable Cd (Ex-Cd) concentration by 41.43%, and increased the boll number, yield, and fiber strength by 14.17%, 21.04%, and 19.89%, respectively compared with the Cd treatment. The results of metabolomic analysis showed that PA application mainly affected the Nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism pathway, Lysine degradation pathway, and Arginine and proline metabolism pathway in cotton leaves and soil. Besides, in these metabolic pathways, succinic acid semialdehyde of cotton leaves, saccharopine of soil, and S-Adenosylmethionine of soil and cotton had the most significant response to PA application. Therefore, the application of PA to Cd-contaminated soil can increase soil and cotton leaf enzyme activity and cotton yield (boll number and seed cotton yield) and quality (fiber strength), and maintain soil-plant material balance by regulating the distribution of Cd ions and key metabolites in the soil-cotton system. This study will deepen our understanding of the metabolic mechanism of PA remediating Cd-contaminated cotton fields, and provide a technical reference for the remediation of heavy metal contamination in drip-irrigated cotton fields in arid areas.

Molluscicidal and biochemical effects of green-synthesized F-doped ZnO nanoparticles against land snail Monacha cartusiana under laboratory and field conditions

The glass clover snail, Monacha cartusiana (M. cartusiana) is one of the most seriously impacting economic animal pests spreading across Egypt which inflicts severe damages to the agriculture. A green route is developed by deploying an abundant Rosemary plant leaves aqueous extract to synthesize ZnO and F-doped ZnO (F-ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) that display high molluscicidal activities against the M. cartusiana land snails via leaf dipping and contact techniques. The effect of lethal concentrations, that kills 50% of exposed snails (LC50) value of the treatments, is examined on the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), enzymes, total protein (TP), total lipids (TL) and cholesterol level of snails, including the histopathological evaluation of the digestive gland and foot of M. Cartusiana. Their molluscicidal activity as poisonous baits under field conditions is also evaluated and compared to the recommended molluscicide, Neomyl. The results show that F^- doping dramatically improves the snail control capability of ZnO NPs, and promotes a considerable increase in both ALT and AST enzymes with an enhancement of TL and Cholesterol levels, but a significant decrease in TP content and ALP activity in treated snails compared to the control group. The LC₅₀ values are found to be 1381.55 and 2197.59 ppm using the leaf dipping for F-ZnO and ZnO, while 237.51 and 245.90 ppm can be achieved using the contact technique, respectively. The greenly synthesized F-ZnO and ZnO NPs induce severe histological alterations in the digestive gland and foot of M. cartusiana, including a complete destruction of the digestive tubules. The histological evaluation of the foot of M. cartusiana exposed to ZnO, shows a rupture of the epithelial layer of the foot sole, while F- ZnO NPs causes the folds of the foot becoming deeper and the rupture of epithelial layer. Our field experiments further demonstrate that F-ZnO achieves 60.08% reduction, while ZnO attains 56.39% diminution in snail population compared to the commercial, Neomyl (69.55%), exhibiting great potentials in controlling the harmful land snail populations.

TiO2-NPs and cadmium co-exposure: in vitro assessment of genetic and genomic DNA damage on Dicentrarchus labrax embryonic cells

The increased titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂-NPs) spread and their interaction with organic and inorganic pollutants arouses concern for the potential hazards for organisms and environment. This study tested in vitro the genotoxic effects of TiO₂-NPs (1 μg/mL) and cadmium (Cd) (0.1 μg/mL) co-exposure using Dicentrarchus labrax embryonic cells (DLEC) as experimental model. The genotoxicity tests (Comet assay, Diffusion Assay and Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) were conducted after 3, 24 and 48 hours of exposure to TiO₂-NPs and Cd alone and in combination. The results showed that the percentage of DNA damage and apoptotic cells increases following 48 hours TiO₂-NPs exposure, while DNA instability was detected for all the times tested. Cd induced genotoxic effects starting from 3 hour-exposure and for all the treatment times. Cd + TiO₂-NPs co-exposure did not cause any genomic damage or apoptosis for all the exposure times. The possibility that Cd and TiO₂-NPs form aggregates no longer able of penetrating the nucleus and damaging the genetic material is discussed.

Chronic toxicity effects of sediment-associated polystyrene nanoplastics alone and in combination with cadmium on a keystone benthic species Bellamya aeruginosa

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging pollutants that may adversely affect aquatic fauna. However, the adverse effects of NPs and heavy metals, both alone and combined on freshwater benthic fauna remain largely unclear. Here, we performed a 28-day sediment toxicity test with Bellamya aeruginosa to examine the effects of exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and co-exposure to PSNPs and Cd. Cd bioavailability, the bioaccumulation of PSNPs and Cd, and changes in multiple biomarkers were determined. The results revealed that PSNPs significantly increased Cd bioavailability and thereby facilitated Cd bioaccumulation; however, PSNPs displayed a negligible vector role in Cd uptake by B. aeruginosa. The results demonstrated that PSNPs can accumulate in B. aeruginosa and induce oxidative damage and DNA damage. Co-exposure to PSNPs and Cd significantly enhanced oxidative damage and DNA damage and reduced metallothionein levels. The integrated biomarker response index analysis showed that co-exposure to PSNPs and Cd considerably increased toxic stress in B. aeruginosa compared to single PSNPs or Cd exposure, suggesting that PSNPs may have a synergistic effect with Cd. Collectively, our findings highlight that PSNPs not only cause toxicity to B. aeruginosa but also significantly enhance the toxicity of Cd by increasing Cd bioavailability in the sediment.

Advances in genotoxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in vivo and in vitro

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) are currently one of the most widely used nanomaterials. Due to an increasing scope of applications, the exposure of humans to TiO₂ NP is inevitable, such as entering the body through the mouth with food additives or drugs, invading the damaged skin with cosmetics, and entering the body through the respiratory tract during the process of production and handling. Compared with TiO₂ coarse particles, TiO₂ NPs have stronger conductivity, reaction activity, photocatalysis, and permeability, which may lead to greater toxicity to organisms. Given that TiO₂ was classified as a category 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans), the genotoxicity of TiO₂ NPs has become the focus of attention. There have been a series of previous studies investigating the potential genotoxicity of TiO₂ NPs, but the existing research results are still controversial and difficult to conclude. More than half of studies have shown that TiO₂ NPs can cause genotoxicity, suggesting that TiO₂ NPs are likely to be genotoxic to humans. And the genotoxicity of TiO₂ NPs is closely related to the exposure concentration, mode and time, and experimental cells/animals as well as its physicochemical properties (crystal type, size, and shape). This review summarized the latest research progress of related genotoxic effects through in vivo studies and in vitro cell tests, hoping to provide ideas for the evaluation of TiO₂ NPs genotoxicity.

Emerging investigator series: metal nanoparticles in freshwater: transformation, bioavailability and effects on invertebrates

MNPs may undergo different environmental transformations in aquatic systems, consequently changing their mobility, bioavailability and toxicity to freshwater invertebrates.

Trophic Transfer and Toxicity of (Mixtures of) Ag and TiO2 Nanoparticles in the Lettuce-Terrestrial Snail Food Chain

The increasing application of biosolids and agrochemicals containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) results in their inevitable accumulation in soil, with unknown implications along terrestrial food chains. Here, the trophic transfer of single NPs and a mixture of AgNPs and TiO2NPs from lettuce to snails and their associated impacts on snails were investigated. Both AgNPs and TiO2NPs were transferred from lettuce to snails with trophic transfer factors (defined as the ratio of the Ag/Ti concentration in snail tissues to the Ag/Ti concentration in lettuce leaves) of 0.2-1.1 for Ag and 3.8-47 for Ti. Moreover, the majority of Ag captured by snails in the AgNP-containing treatments was excreted via feces, whereas more than 70% of Ti was distributed in the digestive gland of snails in the TiO2NP-containing treatments. Additionally, AgNP-containing treatments significantly inhibited the activity of snails, while TiO2NP-containing treatments significantly reduced feces excretion of snails. Furthermore, the concurrent application of AgNPs and TiO2NPs did not affect the biomagnification and distribution patterns of Ag and Ti in snails, whereas their co-existence exhibited more severe inhibition of the growth and activity of snails than in the case of applying AgNPs or TiO2NPs alone. This highlights the possibility of nanoparticle transfer to organisms of higher trophic levels via food chains and the associated risks to ecosystem health.

Effects of 4-epianhydrotetracycline on oxidative stress in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos

4-Epianhydrotetracycline (4-EATC) is a major intermediate product of tetracycline during its degradation progress in the natural environment, which is frequently detected in aquatic environments and poses a potential threat to aquatic organisms. In the present study, the ecotoxicity of 4-EATC have been studied from the perspective of oxidative stress by using zebrafish embryos. After 96 h exposure, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and protein carbonyl (PC) contents in zebrafish embryos in the lower-concentration 4-EATC treatment groups (1.25 mg/L and 2.50 mg/L) showed no significant differences compared with the negative control group. However, the total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was increased significantly. After exposed to the higher-concentration of 4-EATC (5.00, 10.0 and 20.0 mg/L) resulted in a significant increase in ROS levels, MDA concentrations and PC contents, in contrast, a significant decrease in SOD activities. The results indicate that exposure to high concentrations of 4-EATC (5.00, 10.0 and 20.0 mg/L) could disrupt the redox equilibrium in zebrafish embryos, leading to the occurrence of oxidative damage. Apoptosis of the embryonic cells could be induced by 4-EATC exposure at different concentration and the rate of apoptosis enhanced with the increase of 4-EATC concentration. The pericardium was the most frequent site of apoptosis. The present study points out that more attention should be paid to the potential ecological risks of antibiotic degradation products.

Co-exposures of TiO2 nanoparticles and cadmium ions at non-lethal doses aggravates liver injury in mice with ConA-induced hepatitis

The wide applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNP) and ubiquitous cadmium (Cd) pollution increase the chances of their co-existence in the environment and also pose potential health risks to humans. However, toxicological understanding of effects of co-exposures of TNP and Cd to mammals is still lacking. In this study, non-lethal doses of TNP and CdCl2 were intravenously co-administered to healthy or Concanavalin A (ConA)-induced acute hepatitis mice. Co-exposures of TNP and CdCl2 increased the accumulation of Cd2+ in the liver of hepatitis mice, which was 1.42-fold higher than that of healthy mice. Co-exposures also caused liver damage only in hepatitis mice on the basis of histopathological and biochemical evidence. Further study showed that co-exposure upregulated hepatic oxidative stress, which further induced autophagy and apoptosis only in the liver of hepatitis mice. This finding underlines the potential toxicological consequences of co-exposures of TNP and CdCl2 in hepatitis sufferers.

Evaluating the potential of KOH-modified composite biochar amendment to alleviate the ecotoxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid-contaminated sediment on Bellamya aeruginosa

Modified composite biochar offers a cost-effective solution for the remediation of contaminated sediments; however, few studies have evaluated the effects of modified composite biochar amendment on the ecotoxicity of contaminated sediment based on benthic macroinvertebrates. A 21-day sediment toxicity test was conducted using the freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa to examine the intrinsic ecotoxicity of a novel KOH-modified composite biochar (KOH-CBC) and its efficacy for reducing the bioavailability, uptake, and ecotoxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). It was found that KOH-CBC is toxic to B. aeruginosa, which may be attributed to its high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content and alkalinity. The addition of KOH-CBC to PFOA-contaminated sediments can markedly reduce the bioavailability and uptake of PFOA by more than 90% and 50%, respectively, and subsequently alleviate the toxicity of PFOA to B. aeruginosa by at least 30%. Increasing the KOH-CBC dosage is not beneficial for further mitigating the toxicity of PFOA-contaminated sediments. Our findings imply that KOH-CBC is a promising sorbent for the in-situ remediation of PFOA-contaminated sediments. Application of acidified KOH-CBC at a dosage of approximately 1-3% will be sufficient to control the ecotoxicity of PFOA; however, its long-term environmental effects should be further validated.

Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) heavy metal pollution induced toxicity severely affects the plant growth and yield of various agriculutral crops worldwide. The present study discuss the prime role of phycomolecules coated zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) application on development of heavy metal tolerance mechanism in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seedlings better than exposed to Cd and Pb treatments alone. Co-exposure of ZnONPs along with heavy metal treatments significantly promoted the shoot, and root growth as well as biomass compared to control, while it was down-regulated in Cd and Pb exposed seedlings. The intervention of ZnONPs had up-regulated the level of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid contents in leaves grown under Cd and Pb treatments than the untreated control. Similarly, the level of total soluble protein and malondialdehyde (MDA-lipid peroxidation) contents was significantly increased in the co-presence of ZnONPs along with Cd and Pb treatments over their respective control. Accumulation of antioxidant defense enzymes viz., superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) was up-regulated significantly in seedlings upon co-exposure of ZnONPs with Cd and Pb treatments. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting analysis exhibited no genomic changes/alterations in seedlings by co-existence of ZnONPs with heavy metals. Overall, the present results indicate that the addition of ZnONPs with Cd and Pb ion exposure protects cotton seedlings by alleviating heavy metal induced phytotoxicity and promoted physiochemical characteristics via differential regulation of photosynthetic machinery as well as antioxidative defense mechanisms in cotton seedlings. Results strongly suggest that phycomolecule coated ZnO nanoparticles could be effectively used as nanofertilizer to cultivate agronomically important crops in heavy metal polluted soil in the future.

Adsorption of Cd to TiO2-NPs Forms Low Genotoxic AGGREGATES in Zebrafish Cells

The aquatic environment is involved in the pollutants spreading mechanisms, including nanomaterials and heavy metals. The aims of this study were to assess the in vivo genotoxicity of Cd (1 mg/L) and to investigate the genomic effects generated by its co-exposure with TiO₂-NPs (10 µg/L). The study was performed using zebrafish as a model for 5, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of exposure. The genotoxic potential was assessed by three experimental approaches: DNA integrity, degree of apoptosis, and molecular alterations at the genomic level by genomic template stability (% GTS) calculation. Results showed an increased in DNA damage after Cd exposure with a decrease in % GTS. The co-exposure (TiO₂-NPs + Cd) induced a no statistically significant loss of DNA integrity, a reduction of the apoptotic cell percentage and the recovery of genome stability for prolonged exposure days. Characterization and analytical determinations data showed Cd adsorption to TiO₂-NPs, which reduced free TiO₂-NPs levels. The results of our study suggest that TiO₂-NPs could be used for the development of controlled heavy metal bioremediation systems.

Risk assessment of iron oxide nanoparticles in an aquatic ecosystem: A case study on Biomphalaria glabrata

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been applied in several sectors in the environmental field, such as aquatic nanoremediation, due to their unique superparamagnetic and nanospecific properties. However, the knowledge of chronic toxicity of IONPs on aquatic invertebrate remains limited. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the chronic toxicity of gluconic acid-functionalized IONPs (GLA-IONPs) and their dissolved counterpart (FeCl₃) to freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata. GLA-IONPs were synthesized and characterized by multiple techniques, and the snails were exposed to both Fe forms at environmentally relevant concentrations (1.0-15.6 mg L^-1) for 28 days. The bioaccumulation, mortality rate, behavior impairments, morphological alterations, fecundity and fertility of snails were analyzed. Results showed that GLA-IONPs induced high iron bioaccumulation in the entire soft tissue portion. Chronic exposure to GLA-IONP increased the behavioral impairments of snails compared to iron ions and control groups. Both Fe forms reduced the fecundity, while the mortality and reduced fertility were observed only after the exposure to GLA-IONPs at 15.6 mg L^-1. Overall results indicated the behavioral impairments and reproductive toxicity associated, possibly, to bioaccumulation of GLA-IONPs in the B. glabrata. These results can be useful for the development of eco-friendly nanotechnologies.

Toxicity of engineered nanomaterials to aquatic and land snails: A scientometric and systematic review

The emerging growth of nanotechnology has attracted great attention due to its application in the parasite and intermediate host control. However, the knowledge concerning the mechanism of action (MoA) and toxicity of nanomaterials (NMs) to snails remain unclear. In this context, the present study revised the historical use of snails as experimental models in nanotoxicological studies and summarized the MoA and toxicity of NMs in aquatic and land snails. The data concerning the bioaccumulation, reproductive and transgenerational toxicity, embryotoxicity, genotoxicity and potential molluscicidal activity of NMs were revised. Furthermore, the data about the experimental conditions, such as exposure time, concentrations, cell and tissue-specific responses, snail species and nanoparticle types are discussed. Revised data showed that the toxic effects of NMs were reported for 21 snail species with medical, veterinary and ecological importance. The NM toxicity to snails is dependent on the physical and chemical properties of NMs, as well as their environmental transformation and experimental design. The NM bioaccumulation on snails was related to several toxic effects, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, oxidative stress, following by oxidative damage to DNA, lipids and proteins. The NM metabolism in snails remains unknown. Results showed the potential use of NMs in the snail control program. Also, significant research gaps and recommendations for future researches are indicated. The present study confirms that snails are suitable invertebrate model system to assess the nanotoxicity.

Multi-omics analyses reveal molecular mechanisms for the antagonistic toxicity of carbon nanotubes and ciprofloxacin to Escherichia coli

With the increasing production and application, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are being discharged into the environment, where they can interact with co-existing contaminants, causing complicated joint toxicity to organisms that needs to be studied. The case study of ENMs-contaminant joint toxicity and the understanding of relative mechanisms are very insufficient, particularly the mechanisms of molecular interactions and governing processes. Herein, a typical ENMs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 0-60 mg/L), and a common antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP, 0-900 mg/L), were selected as the analytes. Their joint toxicity to a model microbe Escherichia coli was specifically investigated via biochemical, transcriptomics, and metabolomics approaches. The result revealed an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition between CNTs and CIP. Mitigations in cell membrane disruption and oxidative stress were involved in the antagonistic action. CIP (48.8-244 mg/L) decreased the bioaccumulation of CNTs (7.2 mg/L) via reducing cell-surface hydrophobicity and hindering the bio-nano interaction, which could attenuate the toxicity of CNTs to bacteria. CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) alleviated the disturbance of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) to gene expressions especially related to nitrogen compound metabolism, oxidoreductase activity, and iron-sulfur protein maturation, probably through relieving the CIP-induced inhibition of DNA gyrase activity. Further, CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) offset the impact of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) on bacterial metabolome via the regulation of biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and metabolisms of some amino acids and glutathione. The findings shed new light on the molecular mechanisms by which ENMs present joint effect on contaminant toxicity, and provide important information for risk assessments of CNTs and fluoroquinolones in the environment.

Combined effects of polystyrene microplastics and natural organic matter on the accumulation and toxicity of copper in zebrafish

As emerging contaminants, microplastics (MPs) are predicted to act as vectors for other contaminants and their combined effects are largely unknown. In this study, the combined effects of MPs and natural organic matter (NOM) on the accumulation and toxicity of copper (Cu) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) were investigated. As a result, small-size MPs could absorb more Cu than large-size MPs. The presence of NOM promoted Cu adsorption on MPs in the pH range of 6-8. Our results demonstrate that the combination of MPs and NOM increased Cu accumulation in the livers and guts in a size-depended manner. Correspondingly, the results of biochemical test showed that MPs and NOM could aggravate Cu-toxicity in the livers and guts, which is manifested in the increased levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) and metallothionein (MT) and decreased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Furthermore, the results of transcriptomic analysis suggested that such aggravation of toxicity was mainly attributed to the inhibition of Cu-ion transport and the enhanced oxidative stress. Since the co-existence of MPs and NOM in the environment is inevitable, their enhancement effects on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of other pollutants such as heavy metals deserve more attention.

Environmental mixtures of nanomaterials and chemicals: The Trojan-horse phenomenon and its relevance for ecotoxicity

The usage of engineered nanomaterials (NM) offers many novel products and applications with advanced features, but at the same time raises concerns with regard to potential adverse biological effects. Upon release and emission, NM may interact with chemicals in the environment, potentially leading to a co-exposure of organisms and the occurrence of mixture effects. A prominent idea is that NM may act as carriers of chemicals, facilitating and enhancing the entry of substances into cells or organisms, subsequently leading to an increased toxicity. In the literature, the term 'Trojan-horse effect' describes this hypothesis. The relevance of this mechanism for organisms is, however, unclear as yet. Here, a review has been performed to provide a more systematic picture on existing evidence. It includes 151 experimental studies investigating the exposure of various NM and chemical mixtures in ecotoxicological in vitro and in vivo model systems. The papers retrieved comprised studies investigating (i) uptake, (ii) toxicity and (iii) investigations considering both, changes in substance uptake and toxicity upon joint exposure of a chemical with an NM. A closer inspection of the studies demonstrated that the existing evidence for interference of NM-chemical mixture exposure with uptake and toxicity points into different directions compared to the original Trojan-horse hypothesis. We could discriminate at least 7 different categories to capture the evidence ranging from no changes in uptake and toxicity to an increase in uptake and toxicity upon mixture exposure. Concluding recommendations for the consideration of relevant processes are given, including a proposal for a nomenclature to describe NM-chemical mixture interactions in consistent terms.

Nanoparticles in the environment: where do we come from, where do we go to?

Nanoparticles serve various industrial and domestic purposes which is reflected in their steadily increasing production volume. This economic success comes along with their presence in the environment and the risk of potentially adverse effects in natural systems. Over the last decade, substantial progress regarding the understanding of sources, fate, and effects of nanoparticles has been made. Predictions of environmental concentrations based on modelling approaches could recently be confirmed by measured concentrations in the field. Nonetheless, analytical techniques are, as covered elsewhere, still under development to more efficiently and reliably characterize and quantify nanoparticles, as well as to detect them in complex environmental matrixes. Simultaneously, the effects of nanoparticles on aquatic and terrestrial systems have received increasing attention. While the debate on the relevance of nanoparticle-released metal ions for their toxicity is still ongoing, it is a re-occurring phenomenon that inert nanoparticles are able to interact with biota through physical pathways such as biological surface coating. This among others interferes with the growth and behaviour of exposed organisms. Moreover, co-occurring contaminants interact with nanoparticles. There is multiple evidence suggesting nanoparticles as a sink for organic and inorganic co-contaminants. On the other hand, in the presence of nanoparticles, repeatedly an elevated effect on the test species induced by the co-contaminants has been reported. In this paper, we highlight recent achievements in the field of nano-ecotoxicology in both aquatic and terrestrial systems but also refer to substantial gaps that require further attention in the future.

Contamination assessment of mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic in surface sediments of Chabahar Bay

This study aimed to investigate heavy metals content of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in surface sediments of Chabahar Bay. Sediment samples were taken from 13 stations and then analyzed. The concentration of Hg, Pb, Cd and As ranged between 0.06 and 0.14ppm, 8 and 23ppm, 0.05 and 0.9ppm and 5 and 22ppm, respectively. Arsenic content was more than ERL at some stations. Statistical analyses indicated critical importance of organic matter and mud in metal dispersion. Also, positive correlation of Al with Pb, Hg and Cd probably implies their terrestrial origination. Average enrichment factor of Hg, Pb, Cd and As were 2.67±0.95, 0.77±0.28, 6.56±9.9, and 7.53±3.44, respectively. Most stations were classified as moderately polluted and non-polluted sites.
