Cadmium removal and 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation by immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Optimizing leachate treatment with titanium oxide-impregnated activated carbon (TiO2@ASC) in a fixed-bed column: characterization, modeling, and prediction study

This research focused on the application of a fixed bed column filled with immobilized titanium oxide-loaded almond shell carbon (TiO2@ASC) for the treatment of leachate. The adsorption performance of synthesized TiO2@ASC in fixed bed column is analyzed using adsorption experiments and modeling study. The characteristics of synthesized materials are determined by several instrumental techniques like BET, XRD, FTIR, and FESEM-EDX. The flow rate, initial concentration of COD and NH3-N, and bed height were optimized to determine the effectiveness of leachate treatment. The linear bed depth service time (BDST) plots equations with a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.98 confirmed the model's accuracy for COD and NH3-N adsorption in column structure. The adsorption process was found to be well predicted by an artificial neural network (ANN) model with a root mean square error of 0.0172 and 0.0167 for COD and NH3-N reduction, respectively. The immobilized adsorbent was regenerated using HCl and was found to be reusable for up to three cycles, promoting material sustainability. This study is aimed to contribute towards SDG 6 and SDG11 by United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Insights into the recent advances in nano-bioremediation of pesticides from the contaminated soil

In the present scenario, the uncontrolled and irrational use of pesticides is affecting the environment, agriculture and livelihood worldwide. The excessive application of pesticides for better production of crops and to maintain sufficient food production is leading to cause many serious environmental issues such as soil pollution, water pollution and also affecting the food chain. The efficient management of pesticide use and remediation of pesticide-contaminated soil is one of the most significant challenges to overcome. The efficiency of the current methods of biodegradation of pesticides using different microbes and enzymes depends on the various physical and chemical conditions of the soil and they have certain limitations. Hence, a novel strategy is the need of the hour to safeguard the ecosystem from the serious environmental hazard. In recent years, the application of nanomaterials has drawn attention in many areas due to their unique properties of small size and increased surface area. Nanotechnology is considered to be a promising and effective technology in various bioremediation processes and provides many significant benefits for improving the environmental technologies using nanomaterials with efficient performance. The present article focuses on and discusses the role, application and importance of nano-bioremediation of pesticides and toxic pollutants to explore the potential of nanomaterials in the bioremediation of hazardous compounds from the environment.

Nanobioremediation: A sustainable approach for the removal of toxic pollutants from the environment

In recent years, the proportion of organic and inorganic contaminants has increased rapidly due to growing human interference and represents a threat to ecosystems. The removal of these toxic pollutants from the environment is a difficult task. Physical, chemical and biological methods are implemented for the degradation of toxic pollutants from the environment. Among existing technologies, bioremediation in combination with nanotechnology is the most promising and cost-effective method for the removal of pollutants. Numerous studies have shown that exceptional characteristics of nanomaterials such as improved catalysis and adsorption properties as well as high reactivity have been subjects of great interest. There is an emerging trend of employing bacterial, fungal and algal cultures and their components, extracts or biomolecules as catalysts for the sustainable production of nanomaterials. They can serve as facilitators in the bioremediation of toxic compounds by immobilizing or inducing the synthesis of remediating microbial enzymes. Understanding the association between microorganisms, contaminants and nanoparticles (NPs) is of crucial importance. In this review, we focus on the removal of toxic pollutants using the cumulative effects of nanoparticles with microbial technology and their applications in different domains. Besides, we discuss how this novel nanobioremediation technique is significant and contributes towards sustainability.

Mineralization of lead by Phanerochaete chrysosporium microcapsules loaded with hydroxyapatite

In this study, microcapsules assembled with Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium, PC) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) were successfully prepared and applied for Pb(II) immobilization in aqueous solution. The effect of different conditions on Pb(II) removal was investigated, such as pH, temperature, dosages of microcapsules and HAP, and initial concentrations of Pb(II). The removal efficiency of Pb(II) was in order of HAP+PC > HAP > PC > CK (control check) at the Pb(II) initial concentration of 100 mg L^-1, which were 87.7%, 82.82%, 63.67% and 2.06%, respectively. Under HAP+PC treatment, P. chrysosporium secreted plentiful organic acids like formic, oxalic and citric acids, when the addition dose of HAP increased from 5 g L^-1 to 15 g L^-1, the production of formic acid increased remarkably from 32.37 g L^-1 to 66.02 g L^-1. After reaction, P. chrysosporium kept a good biological activity evidenced by the live/dead stain test. The characterization results indicated that the insoluble apatite could transform to soluble phosphate due to the secreted organic acids, then reacted with Pb(II) to form pyromorphite [Pb₁₀(PO₄)₆Cl₂] and lead phosphate hydroxide [Pb₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂]. The overall results clearly demonstrated that combining P. chrysosporium with HAP could be used as a promising technology to accelerate lead immobilization.

Trends in microbial degradation and bioremediation of emerging contaminants

Modernization and modern ways of living demands more improved products from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food processing industries. Moreover, industries like pesticides, fertilizers, dyeing, paints, detergent etc., also needs improvised products as per demand. As the new product emerges, the pollutants from these industries also constitute new type of danger to the environment and serious health risks to the living organisms. These emerging contaminants (ECs) are from different category of sources such as personal care products (PCPs), pharmaceuticals (Phcs), endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), etc. These ECs can easily escape from the conventional water treatment and eventually get discharged in to the surface water and thus enters in to the ground water, soil, sediments, and also into the oceans. When these contaminants emerge we also require progress in tremendous process for preventing these hazardous chemicals by effective removal and treatment. For the past 50 years, both developed and developing countries are working on this treatment process and found that Microbial degradation and bioremediation are very useful for effective treatment to prevent their emissions. This treatment can be designed for any sort of ECs since the microbial members are so versatile to redesign their metabolic pathways when subject to exposure. However, implementing bioremediation is not alone efficient to degrade ECs and hence, combination of bioremediation, nanotechnology and physical treatment method will also provide sustainable, potent and fast degradation process. In this Book Chapter, we discuss in detail about the ECs, sources of microbial degradation process and its usefulness in the bioremediation of these ECs.

Efficient Degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol on Activation of Peroxymonosulfate Mediated by MnO2

Sulfate radical based-advanced oxidation process has received increasing interest in the remediation of wastewater and contaminated soil. In this study, degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) was investigated over peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by MnO₂, which was prepared by liquid-phase oxidation method. The prepared MnO₂ was characterized by transition electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Characterization results showed that α-MnO₂ exhibited the highest surface area and Mn (III) content. The PMS activation by MnO₂ in 2, 4-DCP degradation followed the order of α-MnO₂ >  γ-MnO₂ > β-MnO₂, which is dependent on the properties of MnO₂ including crystal structure, surface area and Mn (III) content. Influences of initial concentration of 2, 4-DCP, PMS and MnO₂ dosage, pH and co-existing inorganic ions on the degradation were examined. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments with ethanol and tert-butanol suggested that sulfate radicals were the dominant radicals in the process. Findings in this study indicated that α-MnO₂ was an attractive catalyst for activation of PMS to degrade 2, 4-DCP in aqueous solution.

A comprehensive insight into the application of white rot fungi and their lignocellulolytic enzymes in the removal of organic pollutants

Environmental problems resultant from organic pollutants are a major current challenge for modern societies. White rot fungi (WRF) are well known for their extensive organic compound degradation abilities. The unique oxidative and extracellular ligninolytic systems of WRF that exhibit low substrate specificity, enable them to display a considerable ability to transform or degrade different environmental contaminants. In recent decades, WRF and their ligninolytic enzymes have been widely applied in the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs), pesticides, synthetic dyes, and other environmental pollutants, wherein promising results have been achieved. This review focuses on advances in WRF-based bioremediation of organic pollutants over the last 10 years. We comprehensively document the application of WRF and their lignocellulolytic enzymes for removing organic pollutants. Moreover, potential problems and intriguing observations that are worthy of additional research attention are highlighted. Lastly, we discuss trends in WRF-remediation system development and avenues that should be considered to advance research in the field.

Insights into enhanced biodegradation of sulfadimethoxine by catalyst: Transcriptomic responses and free radical interactions

The occurrence of sulfonamides in the environment is a severe global threat to public health due to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic selection pressure that may lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. We report an enhanced biodegradation of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium (Pc) with lignocellulosic biomass (Lb) using Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5 as a catalyst (Pc/Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5/Lb). SDM was completely degraded within 4 days at pH 7.0 in the Pc/Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5/Lb system. Transcriptomic, metabolites and free radical analyses were performed to explore the detailed molecular mechanisms of SDM degradation. A total of 246 genes of Pc in the Pc/Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5/Lb system exhibited significant upregulation compared to that in Pc alone. Upregulated genes encoding cellulases, cytochrome P450, cellobiose quinone oxidoreductase, and cellobiose dehydrogenase were involved in SDM degradation in the Pc/Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5/Lb system. In addition, genes encoding glutathione S-transferase and cytochrome P450 genes related to oxidative stress and detoxification were all significantly upregulated (P < 0.01). Electron paramagnetic resonance revealed the generation of OH suggesting a free radical pathway could be catalyzed by Fe₃O₄-ZSM-5 and the enzymes. These findings of catalyst-assisted SDM biodegradation will be valuable for remediation of antibiotics from contaminated wastewater.

Fir bark modified by Phanerodontia chrysosporium: A low-cost amendment for cd-contaminated water and agricultural soil

In this study, a modified fir barks (MFB) was prepared by mixing fir barks (FB) and white-rot fungi (Phanerodontia chrysosporium) under aerobic fermentation. The potential of MFB for Cd²⁺ adsorption was investigated by batch experiments combined with kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamics analyses. The results revealed that the modification greatly increased the porous structures on the surfaces of fir barks and the surface area of MFB was much higher than that of FB. As a result, the adsorption capacity of Cd²⁺ on MFB (17.4 mg g^-1) was more than two times higher than that on FB (7.2 mg g^-1), and the adsorption of Cd²⁺ on MFB was controlled by physisorption and chemisorption. The immobilization of Cd by MFB in a contaminated agricultural soil was also investigated. The effect of MFB on the bioavailability of Cd was investigated using a leaching test (the European standard EN 12457-2) combined with a typical sequential extraction procedure (the community bureau of reference, BCR). The experimental results showed that the Cd leachability was reduced by 71% when the added MFB dosage was 30 mg g^-1. Besides, the MFB amendment could transform Cd from unstable geochemical fractions into more stable fractions. In total, the MFB, as a chemical-free and eco-friendly material, could be potentially employed for in-situ remediation of Cd-contaminated agricultural soils.

Bead-immobilized Pseudomonas stutzeri Y2 prolongs functions to degrade s-triazine herbicides in industrial wastewater and maize fields

Functional durability of bio-augmented microbes in contaminated fields remains a major challenge in bioremediation. In the present study, various immobilization materials and compositional combinations were designed and compared to enhance the functional durability of Pseudomonas stutzeri sp. Y2 for degradation of simazine, one of the most used herbicides, in industrial wastewater and maize fields. Among four combinations of materials tested, the optimal combination obtained from the orthogonal array trials was 14% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 1-3% sodium alginate (SA), 2% activated carbon (AC), and 1-2% Y2 cells (PSC-Y2), which yielded 1.7 fold faster degradation of simazine at 50 mg L^-1 than that by free Y2 cells in the industrial wastewater. The degradation half-lives (DT₅₀) of simazine (10 mg L^-1) by free Y2 cells and PSC-Y2 was 1.1 d and 5.3 d in laboratory soil, respectively. The DT₅₀ of simazine by PSC-Y2 at the recommended and double dosages of simazine (0.45 and 0.9 g ai·m^-2) was 17.2 d and 12.4 d in the maize fields, respectively, in comparison with 23 d and 17.4 d by free Y2 cells. In addition, the PSC-Y2 degraded 100% of atrazine and terbuthylazine, and 96% of propazine at an initial concentration of 50 mg L^-1 each in 4 days. This study provides an immobilization strategy to stabilize bacteria and prolong bacterial functions to treat s-triazine herbicides contaminated water and soil.

Recent Advances in Water Treatment Using Graphene-based Materials

A variety of processes were reported for efficient removing of heavy metal from wastewater, including but not limited to ion exchange, reverse osmosis, membrane filtration, flotation, coagulation, chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, electrochemical treatments, evaporation, oxidation, adsorption, and biosorption. Among the aforementioned techniques, adsorption/ion exchange has been known as a most important method for removing heavy metal ions and organic pollutants due to great removal performance, simple and easy process, cost-effectiveness and the considerable choice of adsorbent materials.

Nanotechnology and its applications have been developed in most branches of science and technology. Extensive studies have been conducted to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater by preparation and applications of various nanomaterials. Nanomaterials offer advantages in comparison to other materials including an extremely high specific surface area, low-temperature modification, short intraparticle diffusion distance, numerous associated sorption sites, tunable surface chemistry, and pore size. In order to evaluate an adsorbent, two key parameters are: the adsorption capacity and the desorption property. The adsorption parameters including the absorbent loading, pH and temperature, concentration of heavy metal ion, ionic strength, and competition among metal ions are often studied and optimized.

Several reviews have been published on the application of Graphene (G), Graphene Oxide (GO) in water treatment. In this minireview, we attempted to summarize the recent research advances in water treatment and remediation process by graphene-based materials and provide intensive knowledge of the removal of pollutants in batch and flow systems. Finally, future applicability perspectives are offered to encourage more interesting developments in this promising field. This minireview does not include patent literature.

Enhanced removal of trichlorfon and Cd(II) from aqueous solution by magnetically separable chitosan beads immobilized Aspergillus sydowii

Simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics from wastewater has always been an environmental problem with great concern. In this study, a novel ecofriendly bioborbent, magnetic chitosan beads immobilized Aspergillus sydowii (MCBAs) were synthesized and used to simultaneously remove trichlorfon (TCF) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution. MCBAs showed an increased special surface area (55.38 m²·g^-1) through immobilizing A. sydowii and its saturation magnetization reached 14.62 emu·g^-1. The equilibrium removal capacities of TCF and Cd(II) were 135.43 mg·g^-1 and 56.40 mg·g^-1 in the co-system with 200 mg·L^-1 TCF and 50 mg·L^-1 Cd(II), respectively. The removal capacities of TCF and Cd(II) were strongly depended on the immobilized A. sydowii spore concentration, initial concentrations of TCF and Cd(II), and MCBAs dose. TCF biodegradation intermediates were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system. Fourier transform infrared spectra displayed that -OH and -NH groups on MCBAs mainly participated in the Cd(II) sequestration and the CO stretching vibration was possibly related to the degradation intermediates of TCF. MCBAs exhibited excellent recyclability upto four cycles. Therefore, MCBAs are suitable and effective for the simultaneous removal of TCF and Cd(II) from wastewater.

Enhanced degradation of prometryn and other s-triazine herbicides in pure cultures and wastewater by polyvinyl alcohol-sodium alginate immobilized Leucobacter sp. JW-1

The s-triazine herbicides, such as prometryn, have been widely used in agriculture and have raised much public concern over their contamination of water and soil. Leucobacter sp. JW-1 cells were immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol‑sodium alginate (PVA-SA) beads and then used to degrade prometryn. Orthogonal array experiments showed that the optimal immobilization conditions of PVA-SA immobilized Leucobacter sp. JW-1 beads (PSLBs) were 3% JW-1 cells (w/v, wet weight), 10-12% (w/v) PVA, 2-3% (w/v) calcium chloride, and an immobilization time of 24-36h. The PSLBs were more tolerance to pH, temperature and salinity changes than free JW-1 cells and were stable and effective for degrading prometryn through six reuse cycles without losing their degradation capacity. The half-life of prometryn degradation by PSLBs at 100mgL^-1 in pesticide plant wastewaters were 1.1-6.9h. The rate constants of prometryn degradation by PSLBs in wastewaters ranged from 304 to 576mgL^-1day^-1, which were approximately 1.25-118 times those of degradation by free JW-1 cells. The PSLBs degraded 99.9% of atrazine, 99.9% of ametryn, 97.8% of propazine, 100.0% of simetryn, 77.9% of simazine, 98.9% of terbuthylazine, 95.2% of prometon, 98.9% of atraton, and 31.6% of terbumeton at an initial concentration of 50mgL^-1 of each herbicide in 2days. This study indicates that PSLBs persistently biodegrade s-triazine herbicides better than JW-1 free cells, and can be an efficient, safe and reusable biomaterial for the removal of s-triazine herbicides from contaminated sites.

White rot fungi and advanced combined biotechnology with nanomaterials: promising tools for endocrine-disrupting compounds biotransformation

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) can interfere with endocrine systems and bio-accumulate through the food chain and even decrease biodiversity in contaminated areas. This review discusses a critical overview of recent research progress in the biotransformation of EDCs (including polychlorinated biphenyl and nonylphenol, and suspected EDCs such as heavy metals and sulfonamide antibiotics) by white rot fungi (WRF) based on techniques with an emphasis on summarizing and analyzing fungal molecular, metabolic and genetic mechanisms. Not only intracellular metabolism which seems to perform essential roles in the ability of WRF to transform EDCs, but also advanced applications are deeply discussed. This review mainly reveals the removal pathway of heavy metal and antibiotic pollutants because the single pollution almost did not exist in a real environment while the combined pollution has become more serious and close to people's life. The trends in WRF technology and its related advanced applications which use the combined technology, including biocatalysis of WRF and adsorption of nanomaterials, to degrade EDCs have also been introduced. Furthermore, challenges and future research needs EDCs biotransformation by WRF are also discussed. This research, referring to metabolic mechanisms and the combined technology of WRF with nanomaterials, undoubtedly contributes to the applications of biotechnology. This review will be of great benefit to an understanding of the trends in biotechnology for the removal of EDCs.

Applications of white rot fungi in bioremediation with nanoparticles and biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles

White rot fungi (WRF) are important environmental microorganisms that have been widely applied in many fields. To our knowledge, the application performance of WRF in bioremediation can be greatly improved by the combination with nanotechnology. And the preparation of metallic nanoparticles using WRF is an emerging biosynthesis approach. Understanding the interrelation of WRF and nanoparticles is important to further expand their applications. Thus, this mini-review summarizes the currently related reports mainly from the two different point of views. We highlight that nanoparticles as supports or synergistic agents can enhance the stability and bioremediation performance of WRF in wastewater treatment and the biosynthesis process and conditions of several important metallic nanoparticles by WRF. Furthermore, the potential toxicity of nanoparticles on WRF and challenges encountered are also discussed. Herein, we deem that this mini-review will strengthen the basic knowledge and provide valuable insight for the applications of WRF and nanoparticles.

Toxicity mechanisms and synergies of silver nanoparticles in 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation by Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Mechanisms of silver nanoparticles-mediated toxicity to Phanerochaete chrysosporium and the influence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the biodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) have been systematically investigated. AgNPs at low doses (0-60μM) have greatly enhanced the degradation ability of P. chrysosporium to 2,4-DCP with the maximum degradation rates of more than 94%, exhibiting excellent synergies between AgNPs and P. chrysosporium in the degradation of 2,4-DCP. Meanwhile, removal of total Ag was also at high levels and highly pH dependent. However, significant inhibition was highlighted on 2,4-DCP biodegradation and Ag removal upon treatment with AgNPs at high doses and AgNO₃ at low-level exposure. Results also suggested that AgNPs-induced cytotoxicity could arise from the "Trojan-horse" mechanism executing particle effects, ion effects, or both, ruling out extracellularly released Ag⁺. Moreover, under relatively low concentrations of AgNPs exposure, 2,4-DCP was broken into linear chain organics, and eventually turned into CO₂ and H₂O through reductive dechlorination and reaction with hydroxyl radicals. FTIR analysis showed that amino, carboxyl, carbonyl, and sulfur-containing functional groups played crucial roles in Ag transportation and the reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag⁰.

Efficient biodegradation of chlorophenols in aqueous phase by magnetically immobilized aniline-degrading Rhodococcus rhodochrous strain

Background

Chlorophenols are environmental contaminants, which are highly toxic to living beings due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic and cytotoxic properties. Bacterial degradation has been considered a cost-effective and eco-friendly method of removing chlorophenols, compared to the traditional physical–chemical processes.

Results

In this study, we first developed an efficient process for the biodegradation of chlorophenols by magnetically immobilized Rhodococcus rhodochrous cells. R. rhodochrous DSM6263 degrades chlorophenols following the first step of hydroxylation at the ortho-positions of chlorophenolic rings. The cells immobilized by k-carrageenan with 9 g/L Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles could efficiently degrade 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, 2,3-dichlorophenol and their mixture, which were even higher than those by free cells. The magnetically nanoparticle-immobilized cells could be used at least for six cycles.

Conclusion

Given the much easier separation by an external magnetic field and high degradation efficiency, this study provides a promising technique for improving biocatalysts used in the bioremediation process for chlorophenols in wastewater.

Treatment of landfill leachate using immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles

This study investigated the performance of immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles in the treatment of raw landfill leachate with a very low biodegradability ratio (BOD5/COD) of 0.09. The effects of various operating parameters, such as initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, pH, temperature, and biosorbent dosage, were evaluated with respect to the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). For the immobilized biosorbents, an optimum pH of 6.0 for TOC and 7.0 for NH3-N were found suitable for TOC and NH3-N removal at temperature of 37°C, respectively. The most superior removal efficiencies of TOC and NH3-N of landfill leachate were over 75% and 74% in 72 h at an initial COD concentration of 200 mg L(-1), respectively. In addition, heavy metals were partly removed by the immobilized biosorbents during the process of landfill leachate treatment. The species and mass percentage of organic compounds in landfill leachate after the treatment were found to have considerably declined according to the gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. These results indicate that the immobilized P. chrysosporium loaded with nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanoparticles could be a convenient and efficient method for the treatment of landfill leachate.

Physiological fluxes and antioxidative enzymes activities of immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles after exposure to toxic pollutants in solution

Immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles (PTNs) are novel high-value bioremediation materials for adsorbing cadmium and for degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The real-time changes in H(+) and O2 fluxes were measured using the noninvasive microtest technique (NMT). The H(+) influx increased after the addition of 2,4-DCP, and shifted to efflux following the addition of Cd(2+). The O2 flux decreased after the addition of both 2,4-DCP and Cd(2+). A larger Cd(2+) flux was immediately observed after exposure to 0.5mM Cd(2+) (-351.25 pmol cm(-2) s(-1)) than to 0.1 mM Cd(2+) (-107.47 pmol cm(-2) s(-1)). The removal of Cd(2+) by the PTNs increased more after treatment with the 0.5 mM exposure solution (27.6 mg g(-1)) than with the 0.1 mM exposure solution (3.49 mg g(-1)). The enzyme activities were analyzed to review the antioxidative defense system of PTNs in a solution containing various concentrations of Cd(2+). The activities of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase as well as the enzyme catalase (CAT) plateaued at 6.5 U g(-1) FW and 9.7 U g(-1) FW, respectively, after exposure to 0.25 mM Cd(2+). The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased gradually in solutions containing 0.1-0.6 mM Cd(2+), and eventually reached a maximum (68.86 U g(-1) FW). These results illustrate how the antioxidative defense system and the physiological fluxes of PTNs respond to the stress caused by toxic pollutants.

Polyvinyl alcohol-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium and its application in the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater

A novel biosorbent, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium, was applied to the bioremediation of composite-polluted wastewater, containing both cadmium and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The optimum removal efficiency achieved was 78% for Cd(II) and 95.4% for 2,4-DCP at initial concentrations of 20 mg/L Cd(II) and 40 mg/L 2,4-DCP. PPBs had significantly enhanced the resistance of P. chrysosporium to 2,4-DCP, leading to the degradation rates of 2,4-DCP beyond 90% with varying initial 2,4-DCP concentrations. This research demonstrated that 2,4-DCP and secreted proteins might be used as carbon and nitrogen sources by PVA-immobilized P. chrysosporium beads (PPBs) for Cd(II) removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface of PPBs were dominant in Cd(II) binding. The mechanism underlying the degradation of 2,4-DCP into fumaric acid and 1-hexanol was investigated. The adsorption-desorption studies indicated that PPBs kept up to 98.9% of desorption efficiency over three cycles.

Enhanced catalytic hydrodechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol over Pd catalysts supported on nitrogen-doped graphene

Pd catalysts supported on graphene and N-doped graphene (GN-1, GN-2 and GN-3) with varied N-doping amounts were prepared, and liquid phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol was investigated over these catalysts.

Impact of humic/fulvic acid on the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using nanomaterials: a review

Nowadays nanomaterials have been widely used to remove heavy metals from water/wastewater due to their large surface area and high reactivity. Humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) exist ubiquitously in aquatic environments and have a variety of functional groups which allow them to complex with metal ions and interact with nanomaterials. These interactions can not only alter the environmental behavior of nanomaterials, but also influence the removal and transportation of heavy metals by nanomaterials. Thus, the interactions and the underlying mechanisms involved warrant specific investigations. This review outlined the effects of HA/FA on the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions by various nanomaterials, mainly including carbon-based nanomaterials, iron-based nanomaterials and photocatalytic nanomaterials. Moreover, mechanisms involved in the interactions were discussed and potential environmental implications of HA/FA to nanomaterials and heavy metals were evaluated.
