Assessment of farm soil, biochar, compost and weathered pine mulch to mitigate methane emissions

Prolonged operation of a methane biofilter from acclimation to the failure stage

Global warming needs immediate attention to reduce major greenhouse gas emissions such as methane (CH4). Bio-oxidation of dilute CH4 emissions in packed-bed bioreactors such as biofilters has been carried out over recent years at laboratory and large scales. However, a big challenge is to keep CH4 biofilters running for a long period. In this study, a packed-bed lab-scale bioreactor with a specialized inorganic-based filter bed was successfully operated over four years for CH4 elimination. The inoculation of the bioreactor was the active leachate of another CH4 biofilter which resulted in a fast acclimation and removal efficiency (RE) reached 80% after seven weeks of operation for CH4 inlet concentrations ranging from 700 to 800 ppmv and an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 6 min. During four years of operation, the bioreactor often recorded REs higher than 65% for inlet concentrations in the range of 1900-2200 ppmv and an EBRT of 6 min. The rate and interval of the nutrient supply played an important role in maintaining the bioreactor's high performance over the long operation. Forced shutdowns were unavoidable during the 4-year operation and the bioreactor fully tolerated them with a partial recovery within one week and a progressive recovery over time. In the end, the bioreactor's filter bed started to deteriorate due to a long shutdown of twelve weeks and the extended operation of four years when the RE dropped to below 8% with no sign of returning to its earlier performance.

Biofiltration of n-butyl acetate with three packing material mixtures, with and without biochar

Two cost-effective packing materials were used for n-butyl acetate removal in lab-scale biofilters, namely waste spruce root wood chips and biochar obtained as a byproduct from a wood gasifier. Three biofilters packed with spruce root wood chips: without biochar (SRWC), a similar one with 10% of biochar (SRWC-B) and that with 10% of biochar impregnated with a nitrogen fertilizer (SRWC-IB) showed similar yet differing maximum elimination capacities of 206 ± 27, 275 ± 21 and 294 ± 20 g m-3 h-1, respectively, enabling high pollutant removal efficiency (>95% at moderate loads) and stable performance. The original biochar adsorption capacity was high (208 ± 6 mgtoluene g-1), but near 70% of it was lost after a 300-day biofilter operation. By contrast, the exposed impregnated biochar drastically increased its adsorption capacity in 300 days (149 ± 7 vs. 17 ± 5 mgtoluene g-1). Colony forming unit (CFU) and microscopic analyses revealed significant packing material colonization by microorganisms and grazing fauna in all three biofilters with an acceptable pressure drop, up to 1020 Pa m-1, at the end of biofilter operation. Despite a higher price (14 vs. 123 €m-3), the application of the best performing SRWC-IB packing can reduce the total investment costs by 9% due to biofilter volume reduction.

Resilience of aerobic methanotrophs in soils; spotlight on the methane sink under agriculture

Aerobic methanotrophs are a specialized microbial group, catalyzing the oxidation of methane. Disturbance-induced loss of methanotroph diversity/abundance, thus results in the loss of this biological methane sink. Here, we synthesized and conceptualized the resilience of the methanotrophs to sporadic, recurring, and compounded disturbances in soils. The methanotrophs showed remarkable resilience to sporadic disturbances, recovering in activity and population size. However, activity was severely compromised when disturbance persisted or reoccurred at increasing frequency, and was significantly impaired following change in land use. Next, we consolidated the impact of agricultural practices after land conversion on the soil methane sink. The effects of key interventions (tillage, organic matter input, and cover cropping) where much knowledge has been gathered were considered. Pairwise comparisons of these interventions to nontreated agricultural soils indicate that the agriculture-induced impact on the methane sink depends on the cropping system, which can be associated to the physiology of the methanotrophs. The impact of agriculture is more evident in upland soils, where the methanotrophs play a more prominent role than the methanogens in modulating overall methane flux. Although resilient to sporadic disturbances, the methanotrophs are vulnerable to compounded disturbances induced by anthropogenic activities, significantly affecting the methane sink function.

Assessing the performance of farm soil-based and hybrid biofilters for methane abatement

Mitigating methane (CH4) emissions using methanotrophs (methane-oxidizing bacteria, MOB), is a simple, energy efficient and cheap technology. The abundance and distribution of MOB in the environmental samples is critical for efficient removal of emitted CH4 from any source. This study evaluated the performance of farm soils without and with cheap, easily accessible bulking materials as sustainable hybrid biofilter media. Soil-only biofilters removed up to 865 ± 19 g CH4 m-3 d-1 with well-drained organic carbon-rich soils compared with 264 ± 14 g CH4 m-3 d-1 for poorly drained soil. The removal efficiency decreased with increasing flow rate (0.16→0.24 L min-1) and subsequent priming could not return soil biofilters to their previous removal rate.Hybrid biofilters using organic, carbon-rich soils and compost removed up to 2698 g CH4 m-3 d-1 (flow rate 0.35 L min-1). Increasing CH4 flow rates also reduced their efficiency, but the hybrid biofilters with compost quickly regained most of their efficiency and removed up to 2262 g CH4 m-3 d-1 (flow rate 0.3 L min-1) after remixing of biofilter media. These results show that hybrid biofilters removed higher CH4 than soil-only biofilters and were also more resilient. The MOB gene abundance results complement the CH4 removal capacity of both soil-only and hybrid biofilter materials used. The more aerobic, carbon-rich soils had more abundant MOB than the poorly drained soil. The most porous hybrid biofilter with compost and more available nutrients to sustain bacterial growth and activity had the highest MOB abundance and removed the most CH4.

Gas transport in landfill cover system: A critical appraisal

Landfill gas (LFG) emission is gaining more attention from the scientific fraternity and policymakers recently due to its threat to the atmosphere and human health of the populace living in surrounding premises. Though landfill cover (LFC) (viz., daily, intermittent and final cover) is widely used by landfill operators to mitigate or reduce these emissions, their overall performance is still under question. A critical analysis of available literature, primarily pertaining to (i) the composition of the landfill gases and their migration in the LFC system, (ii) experimental and mathematical investigations of the transport mechanism of gas and (iii) the impact of additives to cover soils on transport and fate of gas, has been conducted and presented in this manuscript. Investigation of the efficiency of modified soil was mainly focused on laboratory test. More field tests and application of amended cover soils should be conducted and promoted further. Studies on nitrous oxide and emerging pollutants, including poly-fluoroalkyl substances transport in landfill cover system are limited and need further research. The transport mechanisms of these unconventional contaminants should be considered regarding the selection of LFC materials including geomembrane and geosynthetic clay liners. The existing analytical and numerical models can provide a basic understanding of LFG transport mechanisms and are able to predict the migration behaviour of LFG; however, there are still knowledge gaps concerning the interaction between different species of the gas molecule when modeling multi-component gas transport. Gas transport through fractured cover should also be considered when evaluating LFG emission in the future. Simplified design method for landfill cover system regarding LFG emission based on analytical models should be proposed. Overall, mathematical models combined with experiments can facilitate more visualized and intensive insights, which would be instrumental in devising climate adaptive landfill covers.

Quantification and control of gaseous emissions from solid waste landfill surfaces

Landfilling is the most common option for solid waste disposal worldwide. Landfill sites can emit significant quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs; e.g., methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide) and release toxic and odorous compounds (e.g., sulfides). Due to the complex composition and characteristics of landfill surface gas emissions, the quantification and control of landfill emissions are challenging. This review attempts to comprehensively understand landfill emission quantification and control options by primarily focusing on GHGs and odor compounds. Landfill emission quantification was highlighted by combining different emissions monitoring approaches to improve the quality of landfill emission data. Also, landfill emission control requires a specific approach that targets emission compounds or a systematic approach that reduces overall emissions by combining different control methods since the diverse factors dominate the emissions of various compounds and their transformation. This integrated knowledge of emission quantification and control options for GHGs and odor compounds is beneficial for establishing field monitoring campaigns and incorporating mitigation strategies to quantify and control multiple landfill emissions.

Enhancement of the methane removal efficiency via aeration for biochar-amended landfill soil cover

Methane (CH₄) mitigation of biocovers or biofilters for landfills is influenced by the bed material and oxygen availability. The improvement of active aeration for the CH₄ oxidation efficiency of biochar-amended landfill soil cover was investigated over a period of 101 days. There were column 1 as the control group, column 2 with biochar amending the soil cover, and column 3 with daily active aeration besides the same biochar amendment. All groups were inoculated with enriched methane oxidation bacteria (MOB). The average CH₄ removal efficiency was up to 78.6%, 85.2% and 90.6% for column 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The depth profiles of CH₄ oxidation efficiencies over the whole period also showed that the stimulation of CH₄ oxidation by biochar amendment was apparent in the top 35 cm but became very faint after two months. This probably was due to the rapid depletion of nitrogen nutrition caused by enhanced methanotrophic activities. While through aeration, CH₄ oxidation efficiency was further improved for column 3 than column 2. This enhancement also lasted for the whole period with a reduced decline of CH₄ oxidation. Finally, the major MOB Methylocystis, commonly found in the three columns, were most abundant in the top 35 cm for column 3. A more balanced ratio of MOB and more homogeneous microbial community structures across different soil depths were also the results of active aeration.

Comparison of the methane-oxidizing capacity of landfill cover soil amended with biochar produced using different pyrolysis temperatures

The in-situ mitigation of methane (CH₄) in landfill gas using landfill cover soil (LCS) is a cost-effective approach, but its efficiency needs to be enhanced. In this study, we incorporated an enriched methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) consortium into LCS and established four biochar-amended LCS groups with biochar produced at 300 °C (BC300), 400 °C (BC400), 500 °C (BC500), and 600 °C (BC600). The purpose was to evaluate the CH₄ oxidation capacity of biochar-amended LCS after inoculation with MOB and to investigate how the physicochemical properties of biochar that are influenced by the pyrolysis temperature affect the performance and microbial activity of biochar-amended LCS. It was found that a 15% volume ratio (representing a mass ratio of 2.49%-2.78%) for biochar amendment in LCS enhanced CH₄ removal efficiency, with the highest removal observed to be 46% for BC400-amended LCS compared to 30% for the original LCS. In addition, CH₄ adsorption by the biochar was not observed, and a 15% mass ratio for biochar in the LCS had no or a negative impact. Besides improving the water-holding capacity and gas permeability of LCS, other possible advantages of biochar amendment in terms of CH₄ oxidization include greater retention of nutrients, electron acceptors, and exchangeable cations, as well as introducing iron ions. It was also found that CH₄ oxidation capacity and the methanotroph activity of biochar-amended LCS did not continue to increase with higher pyrolysis temperatures, even though higher micropore volumes and surface areas were obtained at higher pyrolysis temperatures. From this study, BC400 was identified as the optimal choice for the best performance in terms of enhancing both the CH₄ oxidation capacity of the amended LCS and the growth of type II methanotroph Methylocystaceae, which can possibly be attributed to having the highest cation exchange capacity of the four biochars.

Biofiltration of methane

The on-going annual increase in global methane (CH₄) emissions can be largely attributed to anthropogenic activities. However, as more than half of these emissions are diffuse and possess a concentration less than 3% (v/v), physical-chemical treatments are inefficient as an abatement technology. In this regard, biotechnologies, such as biofiltration using methane-oxidizing bacteria, or methanotrophs, are a cost-effective and efficient means of combating diffuse CH₄ emissions. In this review, a number of abiotic factors including temperature, pH, water content, packing material, empty-bed residence time, inlet gas flow rate, CH₄ concentration, as well biotic factors, such as biomass development, are reviewed based on empirical findings on CH₄ biofiltration studies that have been performed in the last decades.

Mitigating Methane: Emerging Technologies To Combat Climate Change's Second Leading Contributor

Methane (CH₄) is the second greatest contributor to anthropogenic climate change. Emissions have tripled since preindustrial times and continue to rise rapidly, given the fact that the key sources of food production, energy generation and waste management, are inexorably tied to population growth. Until recently, the pursuit of CH₄ mitigation approaches has tended to align with opportunities for easy energy recovery through gas capture and flaring. Consequently, effective abatement has been largely restricted to confined high-concentration sources such as landfills and anaerobic digesters, which do not represent a major share of CH₄'s emission profile. However, in more recent years we have witnessed a quantum leap in the sophistication, diversity and affordability of CH₄ mitigation technologies on the back of rapid advances in molecular analytical techniques, developments in material sciences and increasingly efficient engineering processes. Here, we present some of the latest concepts, designs and applications in CH₄ mitigation, identifying a number of abatement synergies across multiple industries and sectors. We also propose novel ways to manipulate cutting-edge technology approaches for even more effective mitigation potential. The goal of this review is to stimulate the ongoing quest for and uptake of practicable CH₄ mitigation options; supplementing established and proven approaches with immature yet potentially high-impact technologies. There has arguably never been, and if we do not act soon nor will there be, a better opportunity to combat climate change's second most significant greenhouse gas.

A study of torrefied cardboard characterization and applications: Composition, oxidation kinetics and methane adsorption

Torrefaction is proposed as a valorization process for non recycled cardboard. Torrefied cardboard was physically and chemically characterized and it was proposed for energy production and methane adsorption. The surface area and pore volume obtained were among 3.0-6.0m²/g and 5.7·10^-3-2.3·10^-2cm³/g, respectively. The carbon content increased with temperature and residence time of torrefaction. Oxidation kinetics of torrefied cardboard at different temperatures (250-300°C) and at different plateaus (60-120min) were tested. Torrefied cardboard was chemically treated with KOH in order to study the effect of K on thermal oxidation kinetics. It was observed that high torrefaction temperatures and residence times lead to a more stable char. Furthermore, kinetic parameters were obtained by iso-conversional methods and Coats and Redfern method. Attending to iso-conversional method, a decrease of E_a was observed with both, temperature and residence time of torrefaction. Whereas chemically treated presented highest E_a values than torrefied cardboard. In addition, regarding Coats and Redfern method, the oxidation model was not highly modified by torrefaction temperature and residence time. However, for chemically treated samples the oxidation model was modified by K presence. Finally, CH₄ adsorption capacity of torrefied cardboard was studied at 30°C and atmospheric pressure. CH₄ partial pressures tested were lower than 0.45kPa. It was observed that CH₄ adsorption capacity increased with torrefaction time and decreased with chemical treatment. Thus, for the tested samples, the highest adsorption capacity observed was 5.70mgCH₄/g of sample.

Assessing the Performance of Floating Biofilters for Oxidation of Methane from Dairy Effluent Ponds

Mitigating methane (CH) emissions from New Zealand dairy effluent ponds using volcanic pumice soil biofilters has been found to be a promising technology. Because the soil column biofilter prototype previously used was cumbersome, here we assess the effectiveness of volcanic pumice soil-perlite biofilter media in a floating system to remove high concentrations of CH emitted from a dairy effluent pond and simultaneously in a laboratory setting. We measured the CH removal over a period of 11 mo and determined methanotroph population dynamics using molecular techniques to understand the role of methanotroph population abundance and diversity in CH removal. Irrespective of the season, the pond-floating biofilters removed 66.7 ± 5.7% CH throughout the study period and removed up to 101.5 g CH m h. By contrast, the laboratory-based floating biofilters experienced more biological disturbances, with both low (∼34%) and high (∼99%) CH removal phases during the study period and an average of 58% of the CH oxidized. These disturbances could be attributed to the measured lower abundance of type II methanotroph population compared with the pond biofilters. Despite the acidity of the pond biofilters increasing significantly by the end of the study period, the biofilter encouraged the growth of both type I ( and ) and type II ( and ) methanotrophs. This study demonstrated the potential of the floating biofilters to mitigate dairy effluent ponds emissions efficiently and indicated methanotroph abundance as a key factor controlling CH oxidation in the biofilter.
