Mercury oxidation coupled to autotrophic denitrifying branched sulfur oxidation and sulfur disproportionation for simultaneous removal of Hg0 and NO

Mechanistic insights into tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate biomineralization coupled with lead (II) biostabilization driven by denitrifying bacteria

The ubiquity and persistence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and heavy metal (HMs) pose global environmental risks. This study explored tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate (TCPP) biomineralization coupled to lead (Pb2+) biostabilization driven by denitrifying bacteria (DNB). The domesticated DNB achieved synergistic bioremoval of TCPP and Pb2+ in the batch bioreactor (efficiency: 98 %).TCPP mineralized into PO43- and Cl-, and Pb2+ precipitated with PO43-. The TCPP-degrading/Pb2+-resistant DNB: Achromobacter, Pseudomonas, Citrobacter, and Stenotrophomonas, dominated the bacterial community, and synergized TCPP biomineralization and Pb2+ biostabilization. Metagenomics and metaproteomics revealed TCPP underwent dechlorination, hydrolysis, the TCA cycle-based dissimilation, and assimilation; Pb2+ was detoxified via bioprecipitation, bacterial membrane biosorption, EPS biocomplexation, and efflux out of cells. TCPP, as an initial donor, along with NO3-, as the terminal acceptor, formed a respiratory redox as the primary energy metabolism. Both TCPP and Pb2+ can stimulate phosphatase expression, which established the mutual enhancements between their bioconversions by catalyzing TCPP dephosphorylation and facilitating Pb2+ bioprecipitation. TCPP may alleviate the Pb2+-induced oxidative stress by aiding protein phosphorylation. 80 % of Pb2+ converted into crystalized pyromorphite. These results provide the mechanistic foundations and help develop greener strategies for synergistic bioremediation of OPEs and HMs.

Treatment of volatile organic compounds and other waste gases using membrane biofilm reactors: A review on recent advancements and challenges

This article provides a comprehensive review of membrane biofilm reactors for waste gas (MBRWG) treatment, focusing on studies conducted since 2000. The first section discusses the membrane materials, structure, and mass transfer mechanism employed in MBRWG. The concept of a partial counter-diffusion biofilm in MBRWG is introduced, with identification of the most metabolically active region. Subsequently, the effectiveness of these biofilm reactors in treating single and mixed pollutants is examined. The phenomenon of membrane fouling in MBRWG is characterized, alongside an analysis of contributory factors. Furthermore, a comparison is made between membrane biofilm reactors and conventional biological treatment technologies, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages. It is evident that the treatment of hydrophobic gases and their resistance to volatility warrant further investigation. In addition, the emergence of the smart industry and its integration with other processes have opened up new opportunities for the utilization of MBRWG. Overcoming membrane fouling and developing stable and cost-effective membrane materials are essential factors for successful engineering applications of MBRWG. Moreover, it is worth exploring the mechanisms of co-metabolism in MBRWG and the potential for altering biofilm community structures.

Depth-dependent microbial communities potentially mediating mercury methylation and various geochemical processes in anthropogenically affected sediments

Metal contamination and other geochemical alterations affect microbial composition and functional activities, disturbing natural biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, it is essential to understand the influences of multi-metal and geochemical interactions on microbial communities. This work investigated the distributions of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and trace metals in the anthropogenically affected sediment. The microbial communities and functional genes profiles were further determined to explore their association with Hg-methylation and geochemical features. The levels of THg and MeHg in sediment cores ranged between 10 and 40 mg/kg and 0.01-0.16 mg/kg, respectively, with an increasing trend toward bottom horizons. The major metals present at all depths were Al, Fe, Mn, and Zn. The enrichment and contamination indices confirmed that the trace metals were highly enriched in the anthropogenically affected sediment. Various functional genes were detected in all strata, indicating the presence of active microbial metabolic processes. The microbial community profiles revealed that the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Bathyarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota, and the genera Thauera, Woeseia, Methanomethylovorans, and Methanosarcina were the dominant microbes. Correlating major taxa with geochemical variables inferred that sediment geochemistry substantially affects microbial community and biogeochemical cycles. Furthermore, archaeal methanogens and the bacterial phyla Chloroflexi and Firmicutes may play crucial roles in enhancing MeHg levels. Overall, these findings shed new light on the microbial communities potentially involved in Hg-methylation process and other biogeochemical cycles.

The trafficking of HgII by alleviating its toxicity via Citrobacter sp. IITISM25 in batch and pilot-scale investigation

The study aims to see how effective the Citrobacter species strain is in removing Hg^II under stressful conditions. For this, a response surface methodology was chosen to optimized pH, temperature, and biomass for effective biotransformation of Hg^II. The optimized value for pH, temperature, and biomass were 6.5, 30 °C, and 2 mg/l with 89% Hg^II removal potential. TEM-EDX showed accumulated mercury onto the bacterial surface. Pot study was conducted to check the potentiality of this strain in alleviating the toxicity in Solanum lycopersicum L. under different concentrations of mercury. The enhancement in antioxidative enzymes, as well as mercury accumulation, was observed in test plants inoculated with IITISM25. Obtained result showed a greater accumulation of mercury in the root system than that of the shoot system due to poor translocation. Moreover, mercury reductase enzyme synthesis was also boosted by the addition of β-mercaptoethanol and L-cysteine. The optimized condition for maximum enzyme synthesis was at pH 7.5 and temperature 30 °C with Km = 48.07 μmol and Vmax = 9.75 μmol/min. Thus, we can say that Citrobacter species strain IITISM25 can be effectively applied in remediation of Hg^II stress condition as well as promotion of Solanum lycopersicum L growth under stress conditions as a promising host.

Microbial mercury transformations: Molecules, functions and organisms

Mercury (Hg) methylation, methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation, and inorganic redox transformations of Hg are microbe-mediating processes that determine the fate and cycling of Hg and MeHg in many environments, and by doing so influence the health of humans and wild life. The discovery of the Hg methylation genes, hgcAB, in the last decade together with advances in high throughput and genome sequencing methods, have resulted in an expanded appreciation of the diversity of Hg methylating microbes. This review aims to describe experimentally confirmed and recently discovered hgcAB gene-carrying Hg methylating microbes; phylogenetic and taxonomic analyses are presented. In addition, the current knowledge on transformation mechanisms, the organisms that carry them out, and the impact of environmental parameters on Hg methylation, MeHg demethylation, and inorganic Hg reduction and oxidation is summarized. This knowledge provides a foundation for future action toward mitigating the impact of environmental Hg pollution.

Microbial diversity alteration reveals biomarkers of contamination in soil-river-lake continuum

Microbial communities inhabiting soil-water-sediment continuum in coastal areas provide important ecosystem services. Their adaptation in response to environmental stressors, particularly mitigating the impact of pollutants discharged from human activities, has been considered for the development of microbial biomonitoring tools, but their use is still in the infancy. Here, chemical and molecular (16S rRNA gene metabarcoding) approaches were combined in order to determine the impact of pollutants on microbial assemblages inhabiting the aquatic network of a soil-water-sediment continuum around the Ichkeul Lake (Tunisia), an area highly impacted by human activities. Samples were collected within the soil-river-lake continuum at three stations in dry (summer) and wet (winter) seasons. The contaminant pressure index (PI), which integrates Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkanes, Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and metal contents, and the microbial pressure index microgAMBI, based on bacterial community structure, showed significant correlation with contamination level and differences between seasons. The comparison of prokaryotic communities further revealed specific assemblages for soil, river and lake sediments. Correlation analyses identified potential "specialist" genera for the different compartments, whose abundances were correlated with the pollutant type found. Additionally, PICRUSt analysis revealed the metabolic potential for pollutant transformation or degradation of the identified "specialist" species, providing information to estimate the recovery capacity of the ecosystem. Such findings offer the possibility to define a relevant set of microbial indicators for assessing the effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. Microbial indicators, including the detection of "specialist" and sensitive taxa, and their functional capacity, might be useful, in combination with integrative microbial indices, to constitute accurate biomonitoring tools for the management and restoration of complex coastal aquatic systems.

Biological treatments of mercury and nitrogen oxides in flue gas: biochemical foundations, technological potentials, and recent advances

Nitrogen oxides (NO_x) and mercury (Hg) are commonly found coexistent pollutants in combustion flue gas. Ever-increasing emission of atmospheric Hg and NO_x has caused considerable environmental risks. Traditional flue gas demercuration and denitration techniques have many socioeconomic, technological and environmental drawbacks. Biotechnologies can be a promising and prospective alternative strategy. This article discusses theoretical foundation (biochemistry and genomic basis) and technical potentials (Hg⁰ bio-oxidation coupled to denitrification) of bioremoval of Hg and NO_x in flue gas and summarized recent experimental and technological advances. Finally, several specific technical perspectives have been put forward to better guide future researches.
