Advantage for the sex changer who retains the gonad of the nonfunctional sex

Gonadal and cellular dynamics during protogynous sex change in the harlequin sandsmelt Parapercis pulchella

Some teleost fishes change their sex, and some of these fishes have specific gonads known as "ovotestes," that is, gonads containing both ovarian and testicular tissues. In this study, we revealed the gonadal transformation process and cell dynamics during the female-to-male sex change in the harlequin sandsmelt, Parapercis pulchella (Pinguipetidae), in which females possess ovotestes. Histological observations revealed that although female ovotestes were composed of oocytes, a few cysts of male germ cells were observed among them. At the initial phase of sex change, male germ cells increased, and spermatogenesis proceeded. After that, oocytes decreased and finally disappeared, and the gonads became functional testes. Immunohistochemistry using antibodies against Pcna (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) as a cell proliferation marker revealed that spermatogonia were Pcna positive, whereas spermatocytes were negative, in female ovotestes. This suggests that spermatogenesis is arrested at the spermatocyte stage. In addition, some somatic cells surrounding oocytes, which were thought to be the female follicle cells, were Pcna positive during sex change, indicating that these cells proliferate during sex change and are reused in male testes after sex change. Also, immunostaining using antibodies against active cleaved-Caspase3a as an apoptosis marker demonstrated that oocytes degenerated through apoptotic cell death at the late transition stage. Together with previous findings in other fishes, these findings suggested that the histological processes in gonads during sex change, such as the order of developmental events, developmental fates of ovarian cavities, and ovotestis structures, are diversified among fish species. In contrast, cellular dynamics of female germ and somatic cells during sex change are common among protogynous species.

Theoretical studies of diverse sexual patterns in marine animals

Marine animals show diverse and flexible sexual systems. Here, we review several advancements of theoretical studies made in the last decade. (i) Sex change in coral fishes is often accompanied by a long break in reproductive activity. The delay can be shortened by retaining the inactive gonad for the opposite sex. (ii) Barnacles adopt diverse sexual patterns. The game model was analysed assuming that newly settled larvae choose either growth or immediate reproduction and large individuals adjust male-female investments. (iii) Some parasitic barnacles produce larvae with sexual size dimorphism and others produce larvae with the sex determined after settlement on hosts. (iv) In some fish and many reptiles, sex is determined by the temperature experienced as eggs. The dynamics of sex hormones were studied when the enzymatic reaction rates were followed by the Arrhenius equation. The FMF pattern (male at intermediates temperature; female both at high and low temperatures) required some reactions with enhanced temperature dependence at higher temperatures. The game model provides a useful framework for understanding diverse sexual patterns if we incorporate various constraints, such as unpredictability, cost of trait change and social situations. For further developments, we need to consider constraints imposed by physiological and molecular mechanisms.

Life-history constraints, short adult life span and reproductive strategies in coral reef gobies of the genus Trimma

Body size influences many life-history traits, with small-bodied animals tending to have short life spans, high mortality and greater reproductive effort early in life. In this study, the authors investigated the life-history traits and reproductive strategies of three small-bodied coral reef gobies of the genus Trimma: Trimma benjamini, Trimma capostriatum and Trimma yanoi. The authors found all Trimma species studied attained a small body size of <25 mm, had a short life span of <140 days and experienced high estimated daily mortality of 3.0%-6.7%. Furthermore, the pelagic larval phase accounted for 25.3%-28.5% of the maximum life span, and maturation occurred between 74.1 and 82.1 days at 15.2-15.8 mm, leaving only 35%-43% of the total life span as a reproductively viable adult. All mature individuals had gonad structures consistent with bidirectional sex change, with bisexual gonads including both ovarian and testicular portions separated by a thin wall of connective tissue. In the female and male phases, only ovaries or testes were mature, whereas gonadal tissue of the non-active sex remained. One T. benjamini individual and one T. yanoi individual had ovarian and testicular tissue active simultaneously. The results of this study highlight the life-history challenges small CRFs face on their path to reproduction and reproductive strategies that could be beneficial in fishes with high and unpredictable mortality and short reproductive life spans.

Switches, stability and reversals in the evolutionary history of sexual systems in fish

Sexual systems are highly diverse and have profound consequences for population dynamics and resilience. Yet, little is known about how they evolved. Using phylogenetic Bayesian modelling and a sample of 4614 species, we show that gonochorism is the likely ancestral condition in teleost fish. While all hermaphroditic forms revert quickly to gonochorism, protogyny and simultaneous hermaphroditism are evolutionarily more stable than protandry. In line with theoretical expectations, simultaneous hermaphroditism does not evolve directly from gonochorism but can evolve slowly from sequential hermaphroditism, particularly protandry. We find support for the predictions from life history theory that protogynous, but not protandrous, species live longer than gonochoristic species and invest the least in male gonad mass. The distribution of teleosts' sexual systems on the tree of life does not seem to reflect just adaptive predictions, suggesting that adaptations alone may not fully explain why some sexual forms evolve in some taxa but not others (Williams' paradox). We propose that future studies should incorporate mating systems, spawning behaviours, and the diversity of sex determining mechanisms. Some of the latter might constrain the evolution of hermaphroditism, while the non-duality of the embryological origin of teleost gonads might explain why protogyny predominates over protandry in teleosts.

On the role of eviction in group living sex changers

Abstract

In most sex-changing fishes in coral reefs, a dominant male and multiple females form a mating group (harem). In a few species, the subordinates are simultaneous hermaphrodites that may act as sneakers. In this paper, we ask whether the subordinates in most sex changers choose to be female or whether they are forced to give up their male function to avoid eviction by the harem holder. We consider a game model in which (1) the dominant male evicts some hermaphroditic subordinates if the risk of sperm competition in regard to fertilizing eggs is high, and (2) each subordinate individual chooses its own sex allocation considering the risk of being evicted. In the evolutionarily stable state, the dominant male evicts subordinates only when the subordinates vary greatly in their reproductive resources. All the subordinate individuals are female if the summed male function of the subordinates is smaller than that of the dominant male. Otherwise, all the subordinates are hermaphrodites, and the large individuals have the same male investment but a greatly different female investment, while small individuals have a reduced male investment to avoid eviction risk. We conclude that situations in which the sex allocation of subordinates is affected by the possibility of eviction by the harem holder are rather limited

We studied the role of eviction in social evolution. In most sex-changing fishes in coral reefs, a dominant male and multiple females form a mating group. In a few species, subordinates are simultaneous hermaphrodites. We asked whether the subordinates are forced to give up their male function to avoid eviction by the harem holder. We examined a game model in which the dominant male evicts hermaphroditic subordinates with a high risk of sperm competition, and each subordinate chooses its own sex allocation considering the eviction risk. We derived mathematical conditions for when subordinates are females or hermaphrodites in the ESS. The model demonstrated that the control by the dominant over subordinate reproductive decisions is rather limited.

Optimal composition of chloride cells for osmoregulation in a randomly fluctuating environment

Fish live in water with a different osmotic pressure from that in the body. Their gills have chloride cells that transport ions to maintain an appropriate level of osmotic pressure in the body. The direction of ion transport is different between seawater and freshwater. There are two types of chloride cells that specialize in unidirectional transport and generalist cells that can switch their function quickly in response to environmental salinity. In species that experience salinity changes throughout life (euryhaline species), individuals may replace some chloride cells with cells of different types upon a sudden change in environmental salinity. In this paper, we develop a dynamic optimization model for the chloride cell composition of an individual living in an environment with randomly fluctuating salinity. The optimal solution is to minimize the sum of the workload of chloride cells in coping with the difference in osmotic pressure, the maintenance cost, and the temporal cost due to environmental change. The optimal fraction of generalist chloride cells increases with the frequency of salinity changes and the time needed for new cells to be fully functional but decreases with excess maintenance cost.

Why is bidirectional sex change rare?

Various species of fish living in coral reef communities show sequential hermaphroditism, or sex change. In a typical case, an individual first matures as a female, and later, when it becomes dominant in the mating group, it becomes a male (i.e., protogynous sex change). Many species show only unidirectional changes but some of coral reef fishes exhibit bidirectional sex changes, in which even a dominant male may revert to female when a socially more dominant competitor arrives. However, bidirectional sex change has rarely been observed in natural conditions, even among those species exhibiting it under experimental conditions. Here we explain the rarity of bidirectional sex change by studying dynamics of hormones controlling sex expression. We consider social status factor, S_F, which is elevated when the individual becomes more dominant in the mating group. When the S_F level is high, the dynamics would culminate with low estradiol expression and high testosterone expression, suggesting a male phenotype. In contrast, when S_F level is low, the system converges to an equilibrium with high estradiol expression and low testosterone expression, suggesting a female phenotype. There is a parameter region in which the dynamics exhibit bistability. The model demonstrates hysteresis: as S_F increases smoothly, the system undergoes a sudden transition in the levels of sex hormones. The model can explain why species show unidirectional sex change, in that an individual's switch to a new sex is irreversible, even if the individual's social situation returns to the original subdominant status.

Be a good loser: A theoretical model for subordinate decision-making on bi-directional sex change in haremic fishes

Among animals living in groups with reproductive skew associated with a dominance hierarchy, subordinates may do best by using various alternative tactics. Sequential hermaphrodites or sex changers adopt a unique solution, that is, being the sex with weaker skew when they are small and subordinate, and changing sex when they become larger. In bi-directionally sex-changing fishes, although most are haremic and basically protogynous, subordinate males can change sex to being females. We study a mathematical model to examine when and why such reversed sex change is more adaptive than dispersal to take over another harem. We attempt to examine previously proposed hypotheses that the risk of dispersal and low density favor reversed sex change, and to specify an optimal decision-making strategy for subordinates. As a result, while the size-dependent conditional strategy in which smaller males tend to change sex is predicted, even large males are predicted to change sex under low density and/or high risk of dispersal, supporting both previous hypotheses. The importance of spatiotemporal variation of social and ecological conditions is also suggested. We discuss a unified framework to understand hermaphroditic and gonochoristic societies.
