Surface tension of viscous biopolymer solutions measured using the du Nouy ring method and the drop weight methods

Modification and characterization of a novel and fluorine-free cellulose nanofiber with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties

In this study, a brand-new, easy, and environmentally friendly approach for chemically functionalizing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) to produce modified cellulose nanofiber (octadecylamine-citric acid-CNF) was proposed. Effects of octadecylamine (ODA)/TOCNF mass ratio on the chemical structure, morphology, surface hydrophobicity and oleophobicity were studied. According to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, ODA was successfully grafted onto the TOCNF by simple citric acid (CA) esterification and amidation reactions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that a new rough structure was formed on the ODA-CA-CNF surface. The water contact angle (WCA) and the castor oil contact angle (OCA) of the ODA-CA-CNF reached 139.6° and 130.6°, respectively. The high-grafting-amount ODA-CA-CNF was sprayed onto paper, and the OCA reached 118.4°, which indicated good oil-resistance performance. The low-grafting-amount ODA-CNF was applied in a pH-responsive indicator film, exhibiting a colour change in response to the pH level, which can be applied in smart food packaging. The ODA-CA-CNF with excellent water/oil-resistance properties and fluorine-free properties can replace petrochemical materials and can be used in the fields of fluorine-free oil-proof paper.

Advanced optical assessment and modeling of extrusion bioprinting

In the context of tissue engineering, biofabrication techniques are employed to process cells in hydrogel-based matrices, known as bioinks, into complex 3D structures. The aim is the production of functional tissue models or even entire organs. The regenerative production of biological tissues adheres to a multitude of criteria that ultimately determine the maturation of a functional tissue. These criteria are of biological nature, such as the biomimetic spatial positioning of different cell types within a physiologically and mechanically suitable matrix, which enables tissue maturation. Furthermore, the processing, a combination of technical procedures and biological materials, has proven highly challenging since cells are sensitive to stress, for example from shear and tensile forces, which may affect their vitality. On the other hand, high resolutions are pursued to create optimal conditions for subsequent tissue maturation. From an analytical perspective, it is prudent to first investigate the printing behavior of bioinks before undertaking complex biological tests. According to our findings, conventional shear rheological tests are insufficient to fully characterize the printing behavior of a bioink. For this reason, we have developed optical methods that, complementarily to the already developed tests, allow for quantification of printing quality and further viscoelastic modeling of bioinks.

Synthesis, surface activity, and corrosion inhibition capabilities of new non-ionic gemini surfactants

Several environmentally acceptable non-ionic gemini surfactants are synthesized in this work using natural sources, including polyethenoxy di-dodecanoate (GSC12), polyethenoxy di-hexadecanoate (GSC16), and polyethenoxy di-octadecenoate (GSC18). The produced surfactants are confirmed by spectrum studies using FT-IR, 1HNMR, and 13CNMR. It explored and examined how the length of the hydrocarbon chain affected essential properties like foaming and emulsifying abilities. Surface tension examinations are used to assess the surface activity of the examined gemini surfactants. The lower value of critical micelle concentrations (0.381 × 10-4M) is detected for GSC18. Their spontaneous character is shown by the negative values of the free energy of adsorption (ΔGads) and micellization (ΔGmic) which arranged in the order GSC18 > GSC16 > GSC12. Based on theoretical, weight loss, and electrochemical investigations, these novel surfactants were investigated for their possible use in inhibiting carbon steel from corroding in 1 M HCl. Measuring results show that GSC18 inhibits corrosion in carbon steel by 95.4%. The isotherm of adsorption evaluated for the investigated inhibitors and their behavior obeys Langmuir isotherm.

Mechanical Tester Driven by Surface Tension

The measurement of in-plane mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus and strength, of thin and stretchable materials has long been a challenge. Existing measurements, including wrinkle instability and nano indentation, are either indirect or destructive, and are inapplicable to meshes or porous materials, while the conventional tension test fails to measure the mechanical properties of nanoscale films. Here, we report a technique to test thin and stretchable films by loading a thin film afloat via differential surface tension and recording its deformation. We have demonstrated the method by measuring the Young's moduli of homogeneous films of soft materials including polydimethylsiloxane and Ecoflex and verified the results with known values. We further measured the strain distributions of meshes, both isotropic and anisotropic, which were otherwise nearly impossible to measure. The method proposed herein is expected to be generally applicable to many material systems that are thin, stretchable, and water-insoluble.

Polysaccharide-dextrin thickened fluids for individuals with dysphagia: recent advances in flow behaviors and swallowing assessment methods

The global aging population has brought about a pressing health concern: dysphagia. To effectively address this issue, we must develop specialized diets, such as thickened fluids made with polysaccharide-dextrin (e.g., water, milk, juices, and soups), which are crucial for managing swallowing-related problems like aspiration and choking for people with dysphagia. Understanding the flow behaviors of these thickened fluids is paramount, and it enables us to establish methods for evaluating their suitability for individuals with dysphagia. This review focuses on the shear and extensional flow properties (e.g., viscosity, yield stress, and viscoelasticity) and tribology (e.g., coefficient of friction) of polysaccharide-dextrin-based thickened fluids and highlights how dextrin inclusion influences fluid flow behaviors considering molecular interactions and chain dynamics. The flow behaviors can be integrated into the development of diverse evaluation methods that assess aspects such as flow velocity, risk of aspiration, and remaining fluid volume. In this context, the key in-vivo (e.g., clinical examination and animal model), in-vitro (e.g., the Cambridge Throat), and in-silico (e.g., Hamiltonian moving particles semi-implicit) evaluation methods are summarized. In addition, we explore the potential for establishing realistic assessment methods to evaluate the swallowing performance of thickened fluids, offering promising prospects for the future.

Machine learning (ML)-assisted surface tension and oscillation-induced elastic modulus studies of oxide-coated liquid metal (LM) alloys

Pendant drops of oxide-coated high-surface tension fluids frequently produce perturbed shapes that impede interfacial studies. Eutectic gallium indium or Galinstan are high-surface tension fluids coated with a ∼5 nm gallium oxide (Ga2O3) film and falls under this fluid classification, also known as liquid metals (LMs). The recent emergence of LM-based applications often cannot proceed without analyzing interfacial energetics in different environments. While numerous techniques are available in the literature for interfacial studies- pendant droplet-based analyses are the simplest. However, the perturbed shape of the pendant drops due to the presence of surface oxide has been ignored frequently as a source of error. Also, exploratory investigations of surface oxide leveraging oscillatory pendant droplets have remained untapped. We address both challenges and present two contributing novelties- (a) by utilizing the machine learning (ML) technique, we predict the approximate surface tension value of perturbed pendant droplets, (ii) by leveraging the oscillation-induced bubble tensiometry method, we study the dynamic elastic modulus of the oxide-coated LM droplets. We have created our dataset from LM's pendant drop shape parameters and trained different models for comparison. We have achieved >99% accuracy with all models and added versatility to work with other fluids. The best-performing model was leveraged further to predict the approximate values of the nonaxisymmetric LM droplets. Then, we analyzed LM's elastic and viscous moduli in air, harnessing oscillation-induced pendant droplets, which provides complementary opportunities for interfacial studies alternative to expensive rheometers. We believe it will enable more fundamental studies of the oxide layer on LM, leveraging both symmetric and perturbed droplets. Our study broadens the materials science horizon, where researchers from ML and artificial intelligence domains can work synergistically to solve more complex problems related to surface science, interfacial studies, and other studies relevant to LM-based systems.

Enhancement of ocular anti-glaucomic activity of agomelatine through fabrication of hyaluronic acid modified-elastosomes: formulation, statistical optimisation, in vitro characterisation, histopathological study, and in vivo assessment

AIM

The aim of this manuscript was to fabricate agomelatine (AGM) loaded elastosomes to improve its corneal permeation and ocular bioavailability. AGM is a biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) class II with low water solubility and high membrane permeability. It has a potent agonistic action on melatonin receptors, so it is used for glaucoma treatment.

METHODS

Elastosomes were made using modified ethanol injection technique according to a 22 × 41 full factorial design. The chosen factors were: edge activators (EAs) type, surfactant percent (SAA %w/w), and cholesterol:surfactant ratio (CH:SAA ratio). The studied responses were encapsulation efficiency percent (EE%), mean diameter, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential (ZP), percentage of drug released after two hours (Q2h%), and 24 hours (Q24h%).

RESULTS

The optimum formula with the desirability of 0.752 was composed of Brij98 as EA type, 15%w/w SAA%, and 1:1 CH:SAA ratio. It revealed EE% of 73.22%w/v and mean diameter, PDI, ZP, Q2h%, and Q24h% values of 484.25 nm, 0.31, -30.75 mV, 32.7%w/v, and 75.6%w/v, respectively. It demonstrated acceptable stability for three months and superior elasticity than its conventional liposome. The histopathological study ensured the tolerability of its ophthalmic application. Also, it was proven to be safe from the results of the pH and refractive index tests. The in vivo pharmacodynamic parameters of the optimum formula revealed dominance in a maximum % decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP), the area under the IOP response curve, and mean residence time with the value of 82.73%w/v, 820.69%h, and 13.98 h compared to that of the AGM solution (35.92%w/v, 181.30%h, and 7.52 h).

CONCLUSIONS

Elastosomes can be a promising option to improve AGM ocular bioavailability.

Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces: Features of Interaction with Liquid Drops

The processes of interaction of liquid droplets with solid surfaces have become of interest to many researchers. The achievements of world science should be used for the development of technologies for spray cooling, metal hardening, inkjet printing, anti-icing surfaces, fire extinguishing, fuel spraying, etc. Collisions of drops with surfaces significantly affect the conditions and characteristics of heat transfer. One of the main areas of research into the interaction of drops with solid surfaces is the modification of the latter. Changes in the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of surfaces give the materials various functional properties-increased heat transfer, resistance to corrosion and biofouling, anti-icing, etc. This review paper describes methods for obtaining hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The features of the interaction of liquid droplets with such surfaces are considered. The existing and possible applications of modified surfaces are discussed, as well as topical areas of research.

Rheological Issues on Oropharyngeal Dysphagia

There is an increasing proof of the relevance of rheology on the design of fluids for the diagnosis and management of dysphagia. In this sense, different authors have reported clinical evidence that support the conclusion that an increase in bolus viscosity reduces the risks of airway penetration during swallowing. However, this clinical evidence has not been associated yet to the definition of objective viscosity levels that may help to predict a safe swallowing process. In addition, more recent reports highlight the potential contribution of bolus extensional viscosity, as elongational flows also develops during the swallowing process. Based on this background, the aim of this review paper is to introduce the lecturer (experts in Dysphagia) into the relevance of Rheology for the diagnosis and management of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD). In this sense, this paper starts with the definition of some basic concepts on Rheology, complemented by a more extended vision on the concepts of shear viscosity and elongational viscosity. This is followed by a short overview of shear and elongational rheometrical techniques relevant for the characterization of dysphagia-oriented fluids, and, finally, an in-depth analysis of the current knowledge concerning the role of shear and elongational viscosities in the diagnosis and management of OD (shear and elongational behaviors of different categories of dysphagia-oriented products and contrast fluids for dysphagia assessment, as well as the relevance of saliva influence on bolus rheological behavior during the swallowing process).

Hyaluronic acid-enriched bilosomes: an approach to enhance ocular delivery of agomelatine via D-optimal design: formulation, in vitro characterization, and in vivo pharmacodynamic evaluation in rabbits

Agomelatine (AGO) is a dual-functional drug. It uses as an antidepressant when orally administrated and antiglaucomic when topically applied to the eye. This study aimed to formulate AGO into bilosomal vesicles for glaucoma treatment, as modern studies pointed out the effect of topical AGO on intraocular pressure for the treatment of glaucoma. A modified ethanol injection technique was used for the fabrication of AGO bilosomes according to a D-optimal design. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) to edge activator (EA) ratio, Hyaluronic acid percentage (HA%), and EA type were utilized as independent variables. The measured responses were percent entrapment efficiency (EE%), particle size (PS), polydispersity index, zeta potential, percentage of drug released after 2 h (Q_2h%), and 24 h (Q_24h%). The optimal bilosomal formula (OB), with the desirability of 0.814 and the composition of 2:1 PC: EA ratio, 0.26% w/v HA and sodium cholate as EA, was subjected to further in vitro characterizations and in vivo evaluation studies. The OB formula had EE% of 81.81 ± 0.23%, PS of 432.45 ± 0.85 nm, Q_2h% of 42.65 ± 0.52%, and Q_24h% of 75.14 ± 0.39%. It demonstrated a higher elasticity than their corresponding niosomes with a typical spherical shape of niosomes by using transmission electron microscope. It exhibited acceptable stability over three months. pH and Refractive index measurements together with the histopathological study ensured that the OB formula is safe for the eye and causes no ocular irritation or blurred vision. The OB formula showed superiority in the in vivo pharmacodynamics parameters over the AGO solution, so AGO-loaded bilosome could improve ocular delivery and the bioavailability of agomelatine.

Polyelectrolytes Enabled Reduced Graphite Oxide Water Dispersions: Effects of the Structure, Molecular Weight, and Charge Density

The polyelectrolyte (PE)-based water dispersion of graphene-related materials (GRMs) represents an interesting intermediate for the development of advanced materials by sustainable processes. Although the proof of concept has been demonstrated, there is a lack of knowledge for what concerns the effects of parameters typical of PEs such as functionalization, molecular weight, and charge density. In this work, we evaluate the effects of such parameters on the quality and long-term stability of reduced graphite oxide (rGO) dispersion in aqueous media prepared by ultrasound sonication in the presence of different PEs. Four PEs were evaluated: polyacrylic acid (PAA), branched poly(ethylenimine) (BPEI), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSS). The prepared dispersions were thoroughly characterized by means of UV-visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, and Raman spectroscopy. The highest concentrations of rGO were achieved by BPEI with a molecular weight of 25,000 and 270,000 Da (33 and 26 µg/mL, respectively). For other PEs, the rGO concentration was found to be independent of the molecular weight. The PAA-based dispersions displayed the best through-time stability while yielding homogeneous dispersion with a smaller average size and narrower size distribution.

Characterization, Antioxidant Activities, and Functional Properties of Mucilage Extracted from Corchorus olitorius L

This study extracted the mucilage from Corchorus olitorius L. to observe its chemical and functional properties and suggest its possible applications in various fields. Corchorus olitorius L. mucilage was isolated by hot water extraction. FT-IR and HPAEC-PAD were used to describe the chemical composition, and the functional properties and antioxidant activities of the mucilage were also examined. The mucilage was mainly composed of uronic acid (34.24%, w/w). The solubility was 79.48 ± 1.08% at 65 °C, the swelling index was 29.01 ± 2.54% at 25 °C, and the water-holding capacity and oil-binding capacity were 28.66 ± 1.48 and 8.423 ± 0.23 g/g, respectively. The mucilage viscosity increased from 4.38 to 154.97 cP in a concentration-dependent manner. Increasing the concentration decreased the emulsion activity and increased the emulsion stability, most likely because of the corresponding increase in surface tension and viscosity. Results from antioxidant assays confirmed that the in-vitro radical scavenging activity of the mucilage increased with concentration. This study shows that C. olitorius L. can be utilized as a new hydrocolloid source, with potential applications in fields ranging from foods to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Interfacial properties of milk proteins: A review

The interfacial properties of dairy proteins are of great interest to the food industry. Food manufacturing involves various environmental conditions and multiple processes that significantly alter the structure and colloidal stability of food materials. The effects of concentration, pH, heat treatment, addition of salts etc., have considerable influence on the surface activity of proteins and the mechanical properties of the interfacial protein films. Studies to date have established some understanding of the links between environmental and processing related parameters and their impacts on interfacial behavior. Improvement in knowledge may allow better design of interfacial protein structures for different food applications. This review examines the effects of environmental and processing conditions on the interfacial properties of dairy proteins with emphasis on interfacial tension dynamics, dilatational and surface shear rheological properties. The most commonly used surface analytical techniques along with relevant methods are also addressed.

How a sticky fluid facilitates prey retention in a carnivorous pitcher plant (Nepenthes rafflesiana)

Nepenthes pitcher plants grow in nutrient-poor soils and produce large pitfall traps to obtain additional nutrients from animal prey. Previous research has shown that the digestive secretion in N. rafflesiana is a sticky viscoelastic fluid that retains insects much more effectively than water, even after significant dilution. Although the retention of prey is known to depend on the fluid's physical properties, the details of how the fluid interacts with insect cuticle and how its sticky nature affects struggling insects are unclear. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms behind the efficient prey retention in N. rafflesiana pitcher fluid. By measuring the attractive forces on insect body parts moved in and out of test fluids, we show that it costs insects more energy to free themselves from pitcher fluid than from water. Moreover, both the maximum force and the energy required for retraction increased after the first contact with the pitcher fluid. We found that insects sink more easily into pitcher fluid than water and, accordingly, the surface tension of N. rafflesiana pitcher fluid was lower than that of water (60.2 vs. 72.3 mN/m). By analysing the pitcher fluid's wetting behaviour, we demonstrate that it strongly resists dewetting from all surfaces tested, leaving behind residual films and filaments that can facilitate re-wetting. This inhibition of dewetting may be a further consequence of the fluid's viscoelastic nature and likely represents a key mechanism underlying prey retention in Nepenthes pitcher plants. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants secrete sticky viscoelastic fluids that prevent insects from escaping after falling into the pitcher. What physical mechanisms are responsible for the fluid's retentive function? First, insects sink and drown more readily in N. rafflesiana pitcher fluid due to its reduced surface tension. Second, once within the fluid, our force measurements show that it costs more energy to separate insects from pitcher fluid than from water. Third, the fluid strongly resists dewetting, making it harder for insects to extract themselves and covering their cuticle with residues that facilitate re-wetting. Such striking inhibition of dewetting may represent a previously unrecognised mechanism of prey retention by Nepenthes. Pitcher fluid fulfils a well-defined biological function and may serve as a model for studying the mechanics of complex fluids.

Atomic Force Microscopy: An Emerging Tool in Measuring the Phase State and Surface Tension of Individual Aerosol Particles

Atmospheric aerosols are suspended particulate matter of varying composition, size, and mixing state. Challenges remain in understanding the impact of aerosols on the climate, atmosphere, and human health. The effect of aerosols depends on their physicochemical properties, such as their hygroscopicity, phase state, and surface tension. These properties are dynamic with respect to the highly variable relative humidity and temperature of the atmosphere. Thus, experimental approaches that permit the measurement of these dynamic properties are required. Such measurements also need to be performed on individual, submicrometer-, and supermicrometer-sized aerosol particles, as individual atmospheric particles from the same source can exhibit great variability in their form and function. In this context, this review focuses on the recent emergence of atomic force microscopy as an experimental tool in physical, analytical, and atmospheric chemistry that enables such measurements. Remaining challenges are noted and suggestions for future studies are offered.

Semi-continuous production of xanthan in biofilm reactor using Xanthomonas campestris

Semi-continuous production of xanthan gum using self-immobilized Xanthomonas campestris cells in biofilm reactors was studied. Fermentation was carried out using two different designs of biofilm reactor equipped with a) stainless-steel support (SSS) and b) polyethylene support (PES). Fermentation was performed in three cycles with refreshing the media at the beginning of each: cycle 1, 0-27 h; cycle 2, 27-54 h; and cycle 3, 54-78.5 h. Results showed that the glucose consumption and the pH reduction in the PES biofilm reactor was faster compared to the SSS biofilm reactor. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the SSS was capable to immobilize more cells during the growth of X. campestris. The maximum concentration of xanthan gum in the SSS biofilm reactor obtained after 27 h (3.47 ± 0.71 g/L), while the maximum concentration of xanthan in the PES biofilm reactor obtained after 78.5 h (3.21 ± 0.68 g/L). Thermal stability analysis of xanthan using differential scanning calorimetry showed the presence of two fractures attributed to dehydration and degradation of polymer. The thermogram represented both endothermal and exothermal behaviour of xanthan polymer. Furthermore, the functional groups and molecular structure of the xanthan produced in this study was evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and also proton nuclear magnetic resonance. in addition, the surface tension of (0.2 %, w/v) xanthan gum solution was in a range of 52.16-56.5 mN/m. Rheological analysis of xanthan showed that the G' values were higher than the G″ in all frequencies demonstrating a relatively high elasticity of the produced xanthan gum.

Direct Measurement of Contact Angle Change in Capillary Rise

Capillary rise is important in many aspects of physical phenomena from transport in porous media to biotechnology. It is typically described by the Lucas-Washburn-Rideal equation (LWRE), but discrepancy between some experiments and the model still remains elusive. In this paper, we show that the discrepancy is simply from the contact angle change during the capillary rise with no help of any specific models, such as dynamic contact angle (DCA) models. To demonstrate this, we directly measure the contact angle change in the capillary rise for glycerol and carboxymethyl cellulose solutions as examples of Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids. Unlike previous studies that used DCA models to explain the discrepancy, when the contact angle change is directly applied to the LWRE for all four tested fluids, the model agrees well with experimental data. The estimated contact angle from the capillary rise as a function of time is in good agreement with the directly measured contact angle within a narrow margin of error. To pinpoint the conditions for the discrepancy, we propose a new time scale when contact angle dynamics dominates. The contact angle dynamics that can be obtained from the macroscopic capillary rise may provide useful information for capillary flow in a more complicated geometry such as porous media.

Construction and characterization of avermectin B2 solid nanodispersion

Poorly water-soluble pesticide compounds are difficult to be formulated as environmentally friendly formulations with high efficacy. For the conventional formulations, more than 50% of pesticides are lost during application due to the decomposition of active ingredient, dust drift and running off. Therefore, there is an urgent need to construct a novel formulation for improving the bioavailability of pesticides. The avermectin B2 solid nanodispersion was developed by self-emulsifying and solidification technology. The average particle size, surface tension and contact angle on cabbage leaves of the solid nanodispersion were 35.3 nm, 36.6 mN/m and 58°, respectively. The toxicities of the nanoformulation against diamondback moths and root-knot nematode were more than 1.7 times that of conventional emulsion in water and water dispersible granule. This investigation demonstrated that for foliage-applied pesticides, the formulation bioavailability had positive correlation with wettability which was negatively correlated with surface tension and contact angle. This study provides an easy and scalable technique to construct the effective and environmentally friendly nanoformulations. The toxicity improvement of the solid nanodispersion will significantly reduce dosage and environmental pollution of pesticide. The clarified relationship between formulation parameters and biological activity will contribute to the design and construction of novel pesticide formulations.

Evaluation of Thickened Fluids Used in Dysphagia Management Using Extensional Rheology

Recent studies show that understanding the rheological properties of thickened fluids, such as viscosity and yield stress, is advantageous in designing optimal thickened fluids for the treatment of dysphagia. To date, these studies have focused on the rheological behavior of thickened fluids in shear deformation, while limited information is available on the surface tension of thickened fluids or their rheological behavior in extensional deformation. Knowledge of the extensional properties of thickened fluids (extensional viscosity and cohesiveness) is important to fully understand the behavior of such fluids while swallowing. Our aim in this work, therefore, was to characterize water and skim milk thickened with a commercial thickener (xanthan gum based) to determine extensional deformation and surface tension properties. It was observed that the surface tension decreases as the thickener concentration increases due to the accumulation of the biopolymer at the surface of the fluid when it dissolves in water. In addition, the extensional viscosity of the fluid increased over time as the filament thinned (i.e., as the Hencky strain increased) until it reached a plateau. It was observed that the maximum extensional viscosity, which is related to the cohesiveness of the fluid, increases with the higher concentrations of thickener. However, the cohesiveness of thickened skim milk was lower than that of the thickened water at a given thickener concentration due to lower surface tension. This study confirms that by increasing the concentration of thickener, it will not only increase the shear viscosity (i.e., bolus thickness) of the fluid, but also the extensional viscosity (i.e., bolus cohesiveness).

Surface tension, rheology and hydrophobicity of rhizodeposits and seed mucilage influence soil water retention and hysteresis

AIMS

Rhizodeposits collected from hydroponic solutions with roots of maize and barley, and seed mucilage washed from chia, were added to soil to measure their impact on water retention and hysteresis in a sandy loam soil at a range of concentrations. We test the hypothesis that the effect of plant exudates and mucilages on hydraulic properties of soils depends on their physicochemical characteristics and origin.

METHODS

Surface tension and viscosity of the exudate solutions were measured using the Du Noüy ring method and a cone-plate rheometer, respectively. The contact angle of water on exudate treated soil was measured with the sessile drop method. Water retention and hysteresis were measured by equilibrating soil samples, treated with exudates and mucilages at 0.46 and 4.6 mg g-1 concentration, on dialysis tubing filled with polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution of known osmotic potential.

RESULTS

Surface tension decreased and viscosity increased with increasing concentration of the exudates and mucilage in solutions. Change in surface tension and viscosity was greatest for chia seed exudate and least for barley root exudate. Contact angle increased with increasing maize root and chia seed exudate concentration in soil, but not barley root. Chia seed mucilage and maize root rhizodeposits enhanced soil water retention and increased hysteresis index, whereas barley root rhizodeposits decreased soil water retention and the hysteresis effect. The impact of exudates and mucilages on soil water retention almost ceased when approaching wilting point at -1500 kPa matric potential.

CONCLUSIONS

Barley rhizodeposits behaved as surfactants, drying the rhizosphere at smaller suctions. Chia seed mucilage and maize root rhizodeposits behaved as hydrogels that hold more water in the rhizosphere, but with slower rewetting and greater hysteresis.

Sustained ocular delivery of Dorzolamide-HCl via proniosomal gel formulation: in-vitro characterization, statistical optimization, and in-vivo pharmacodynamic evaluation in rabbits

Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness worldwide. Frequent administration of traditional topical dosage forms may lead to patient incompliance and failure of treatment. Our study aims to formulate proniosomal gel formulations that sustain the release of the water-soluble anti-glaucoma drug Dorzolamide-HCl (Dorz). Proniosomal gel formulations were prepared using coacervation phase separation method according to a 5² full factorial design. The effects of Cholesterol and surfactant (Span 40) amounts (independent variables) on the percentage entrapment efficiency (EE%), particle size (PS), and the percent of drug released after 8 h (Q8h) (dependent variables (DVs)) were investigated. An optimized formulation (OF) was chosen based on maximizing EE% and Q8h and minimizing PS. An intraocular pressure (IOP) pharmacodynamic study was performed in rabbits to evaluate the in-vivo performance of the OF-gel compared to the marketed Trusopt^® eye drops. The results showed that the independent variables studied significantly affected EE%, PS, and Q8h. OF was the one containing 60 mg Cholesterol and 540 mg Span 40. It had desirability of 0.885 and its actually measured DVs deviated from the predicted ones by a maximum of 4.8%. The in-vivo pharmacodynamic study showed that OF could result in higher reduction in IOP, significantly sustain that reduction in IOP and increase Dorz bioavailability compared to Trusopt^® eye drops. Thus the OF-gel is very promising for being used in glaucoma treatment.

Micelle directed chemical polymerization of polypyrrole particles for the electrically triggered release of dexamethasone base and dexamethasone phosphate

Conducting polymers such as polypyrrole (PPy) can be used as electrically responsive drug delivery systems typically prepared by electrochemical polymerisation, however, the amount of drug that can be delivered is typically low. To increase drug delivery capacity and prepare larger amounts of polymer, PPy nanoparticles were produced by chemical polymerisation over drug-loaded micelles. Two forms of dexamethasone were included to increase total drug loading and to explore the mechanisms of loading and release. The particles produced were approximately 50 nm in size and their conductivity and reversible redox activity were demonstrated. Loading of the hydrophobic dexamethasone base was more efficient than for the more hydrophilic phosphate salt. After pressing the particles into the desired form, electrically-responsive drug release was achieved with a pulsed potential signal being the most effective way to trigger release. Notably, the anionic phosphate salt of the drug was more sensitive to electrically stimulated release than the uncharged base of dexamethasone, highlighting the role of electrostatic forces in driving drug release. This system has potential to be loaded with different drugs widening the scope of application of these smart particles to treat a range of disease states.

Assessment of hydrogels for bioprinting of endothelial cells

In tissue engineering applications, vascularization can be accomplished by coimplantation of tissue forming cells and endothelial cells (ECs), whereby the latter are able to form functional blood vessels. The use of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technologies has the potential to improve the classical tissue engineering approach because these will allow the generation of scaffolds with high spatial control of endothelial cell allocation. This study focuses on a side by side comparison of popular commercially available bioprinting hydrogels (Matrigel, fibrin, collagen, gelatin, agarose, Pluronic F-127, alginate, and alginate/gelatin) in the context of their physicochemical parameters, their swelling/degradation characteristics, their biological effects on vasculogenesis-related EC parameters and their printability. The aim of this study was to identify the most suitable hydrogel or hydrogel combination for inkjet printing of ECs to build prevascularized tissue constructs. Most tested hydrogels displayed physicochemical characteristics suitable for inkjet printing. However, Pluronic F-127 and the alginate/gelatin blend were rapidly degraded when incubated in cell culture medium. Agarose, Pluronic F-127, alginate and alginate/gelatin hydrogels turned out to be unsuitable for bioprinting of ECs because of their non-adherent properties and/or their incapability to support EC proliferation. Gelatin was able to support EC proliferation and viability but was unable to support endothelial cell sprouting. Our experiments revealed fibrin and collagen to be most suitable for bioprinting of ECs, because these hydrogels showed acceptable swelling/degradation characteristics, supported vasculogenesis-related EC parameters and showed good printability. Moreover, ECs in constructs of preformed spheroids survived the printing process and formed capillary-like cords. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part A: 106A: 935-947, 2018.

Self-Powered Triboelectric Micro Liquid/Gas Flow Sensor for Microfluidics

Liquid and gas flow sensors are important components of the micro total analysis systems (μTAS) for modern analytical sciences. In this paper, we proposed a self-powered triboelectric microfluidic sensor (TMS) by utilizing the signals produced from the droplet/bubble via the capillary and the triboelectrification effects on the liquid/solid interface for real-time liquid and gas flow detection. By alternating capillary with different diameters, the sensor's detecting range and sensitivity can be adjusted. Both the relationship between the droplet/bubble and capillary size, and the output signal of the sensor are systematically studied. By demonstrating the monitoring of the transfusion process for a patient and the gas flow produced from an injector, it shows that TMS has a great potential in building a self-powered micro total analysis system.

Bathroom greywater recycling using polyelectrolyte-complex bilayer membrane: Advanced study of membrane structure and treatment efficiency

Polyelectrolyte-complex bilayer membrane (PCBM) was fabricated using biodegradable chitosan and alginate polymers for subsequent application in the treatment of bathroom greywater. In this study, the properties of PCBMs were studied and it was found that the formation of polyelectrolyte network reduced the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) from 242kDa in chitosan membrane to 2.71kDa in PCBM. The decrease in MWCO of PCBM results in better greywater treatment efficiency, subsequently demonstrated in a greywater filtration study where treated greywater effluent met the household reclaimed water standard of <2 NTU turbidity and <30ppm total suspended solids (TSS). In addition, a further 20% improvement in chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was achieved as compared to a single layer chitosan membrane. Results from this study show that the biodegradable PCBM is a potential membrane material in producing clean treated greywater for non-potable applications.

Microencapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCIMB 701748 in matrices containing soluble fibre by spray drying: Technological characterization, storage stability and survival after in vitro digestion

We evaluated sodium alginate, chitosan and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as co-encapsulants for spray dried Lactobacillus acidophilus NCIMB 701748 by assessing their impact on cell viability and physicochemical properties of the dried powders, viability over 35 days of storage at 25 °C and survival after simulated digestion. Fibres were added to a control carrier medium containing whey protein concentrate, d-glucose and maltodextrin. Sodium alginate and HPMC did not affect cell viability but chitosan reduced viable counts in spray dried powders, as compared to the control. Although chitosan caused large losses of viability during spray-drying, these losses were counteracted by the excellent storage stability compared to control, sodium alginate and HPMC, and the overall effect became positive after the 35-day storage. Chitosan also improved survival rates in simulated GI conditions, however no single fibre could improve L. acidophilus NCIMB 701748 viability in all steps from production through storage and digestion.
