An electric-field induced dynamical state in dispersions of highly charged colloidal rods: comparison of experiment and theory

Equilibrium phase diagram and thermal responses of charged DNA-virus rod-suspensions at low ionic strengths

The collective behavior of DNA is important for exploring new types of bacteria in the means of detection, which is greatly interested in the understanding of interactions between DNAs in living systems. How they self-organize themselves is a physical common phenomenon for broad ranges of thermodynamic systems. In this work, the equilibrium phase diagrams of charged chiral rods (fd viruses) at low ionic strengths (below a few mM) are provided to demonstrate both replicas of (or self-organized) twist orders and replica symmetry breaking near high concentration glass-states. By varying the ionic strengths, it appears that a critical ionic strength is obtained below 1-2 mM salt, where the twist and freezing of nematic domains diverge. Also, the microscopic relaxation is revealed by the ionic strength-dependent effective Debye screening length. At a fixed low ionic strength, the local orientations of twist are shown by two different length scales of optical pitch, in the chiral-nematic N* phase and the helical domains [Formula: see text], for low and high concentration, respectively. RSB occurs in several cases of crossing phase boundary lines in the equilibrium phase diagram of DNA-rod concentration and ionic strength, including long-time kinetic arrests in the presence of twist orders. The different pathways of PATH I, II and III are due to many-body effects of randomized orientations for charged fd rods undergoing long-range electrostatic interactions in bulk elastic medium. In addition, the thermal stability are shown for chiral pitches of the N* phase and the abnormal cooling process of a specific heat in a structural glass. Here, the concentration-driven twist-effects of charged DNA rods are explored using various experimental methods involving image-time correlation, microscopic dynamics in small angle dynamic light scattering, optical activity in second harmonic generation, and differential scanning calorimetry for the glass state.

Scaleable two-component gelator from phthalic acid derivatives and primary alkyl amines: acid-base interaction in the cooperative assembly

A series of phthalic acid derivatives (P) with a carbon-chain tail was designed and synthesized as single-component gelators. A combination of the single-component gelator P and a non-gelling additive n-alkylamine A through acid-base interaction brought about a series of novel phase-selective two-component gelators PA. The gelation capabilities of P and PA, and the structural, morphological, thermo-dynamic and rheological properties of the corresponding gels were investigated. A molecular dynamics simulation showed that the H-bonding network in PA formed between the NH of A and the carbonyl oxygen of P altered the assembly process of gelator P. Crude PA could be synthesized through a one-step process without any purification and could selectively gel the oil phase without a typical heating-cooling process. Moreover, such a crude PA and its gelation process could be amplified to the kilogram scale with high efficiency, which offers a practical economically viable solution to marine oil-spill recovery.

Synchronized oscillations of dimers in biphasic charged fd-virus suspensions

Micron-sized colloidal spheres that are dispersed in an isotropic-nematic biphasic host suspension of charged rods (fd-virus particles) are shown to spontaneously form dimers, which exhibit a synchronized oscillatory motion. Dimer formation is not observed in the monophase of isotropic and nematic suspensions. The synchronized oscillations of dimers are connected to the inhomogeneous state of the host suspension of charged rods (fd viruses) where nematic domains are in coexistence with isotropic regions. The synchronization of oscillations occurs in bulk states, in the absence of an external field. With a low field strength of an applied electric field, the synchronization is rather reduced, but it recovers again when the field is turned off. In this Rapid Communication, we report this observation as an example of the strange attractor, occurring in the mixture of PS (polystyrene) dimers in an isotropic-nematic coexistence biphasic fd-virus network. Furthermore, we highlight that the synchronization of PS-dimer oscillations is the result of a global bifurcation diagram, driven by a delicate balance between the short-attractive "twisted" interaction of PS dimers and long-ranged electrostatic repulsive interactions of charged fd rods. The interest is then in the local enhancement of "twist-nematic" elasticity in reorientation of the dimer oscillations. An analysis of image-time correlations is provided with the data movies and Fourier transforms of averaged orientations for the synchronized oscillations of dimers in the biphasic I-N coexistence concentration of charged fd-virus suspensions.

Soft-mode of charged chiral fibrous viruses (fd)

The frictional forces in suspensions vary depending on the size, shape, and the surface of the particles, which are either charged or neutral. For anisotropic particles with no spatial gradient in the order parameter under external parameters, they exhibit either a continuous phase transition or "freezing" of the order parameter fluctuation. They are known as the collective soft-mode, which has a finite cutoff dispersion where the relaxation time diverges. From microscopic dynamics of charged chiral fd-viruses, the soft-mode is revealed with a rotation restoring "twist", obtained from both polarized (VV) and depolarized (VH) small angle dynamic light scattering. Here, I have found the minimum spatial coherence length at a lower I-N binodal concentration, which is due to the reverse of electrostatic repulsive forces with an increase in the concentration of charged chiral rods.
