Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of medicinal plants to treat various veterinary illnesses has been practiced for millennia in many civilizations. Punjab is home to a diverse ethnic community, the majority of whom work in dairy farming, agriculture, and allied professions and have indigenous practices of treating animal illnesses using native flora. This study was designed to (1) document and preserve information about the applications of medicinal plant species in ethnoveterinary remedies among inhabitants of Punjab, Pakistan, and (2) identify popular plants for disease treatment by quantitative analysis of the obtained data and to assess the pharmacological relevance of these species. METHODS To collect data from informants (N = 279), questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used. The ethnoveterinary data were analyzed using principal component analysis, relative frequency citation, fidelity level, relative popularity level, and rank order priority. RESULTS A total of 114 plant species utilized in the ethnoveterinary medicinal system were found, which were divided into 56 families and used to treat 16 different illnesses. The Poaceae family, with 16 species, was the most common in the region. The most commonly employed growth form in herbal preparation was herb (49%). The most used part in ethnoveterinary remedies was leaves (35%), while powder was the most commonly used way for preparing ethnoveterinary remedies (51 applications). According to principal component analysis, the most typically used species in the research region were grasses. Five grasses (Arundo donax, Desmostachya bipinnata, Eleusine indica, Hordeum vulgare, and Pennisetum glaucum) showed a 100% FL value when used to treat diuretics, helminthiasis, digestive problems, fever, cough, worm infestation, indigestion, galactagogue, oral infections, and genital prolapse. The maximum value of disease cured level (DCL%) was recorded at 87.6% for endo- and ecto-parasitic ailments in the study area. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that medicinal plants play an important part in satisfying farmers' animal healthcare demands, making it a feasible practice. The study also provides a wealth of knowledge regarding ethnoveterinary methods for further planning and application, providing an option for farmers who cannot afford allopathic therapy.

Abstract
This study explores the spatio-temporal behavior of mortality due to multiple causes associated with several diseases and their relationship with the physical availability of food. We analyze data for the 2010-2020 period at the municipality level in Mexico. After collecting and standardizing national databases for each disease, we perform SATSCAN temporal and FleXScan spatial cluster analyses. We use the he Kruskal-Wallis test to analyze the differences between municipalities with high relative risk of mortality and their relationship with food retail units and food establishments. We found statistically significant relationships between clusters by disease and the physical availability of food per hundred thousand inhabitants. The main pattern is a higher average density of convenience stores, supermarkets, fast food chains and franchises, and Mexican snack restaurants in high-risk municipalities, while a higher density of grocery stores and inns, cheap kitchens, and menu restaurants exists in the municipalities with low risk. The density of convenience stores, fast food chains and franchises, and Mexican snack restaurants plays a very important role in mortality behavior, so measures must exist to regulate them and encourage and protect convenience stores, grocery stores, and local food preparation units.

Abstract
Fasciola hepatica and Ostertagia ostertagi are cattle parasites with worldwide relevance for economic outcome as well as animal health and welfare. The on-farm exposure of cattle to both parasites is a function of host-associated, intrinsic, as well as environmental and farm-specific, extrinsic, factors. Even though knowledge on the biology of both parasites exists, sophisticated and innovative modelling approaches can help to deepen our understanding of key aspects fostering the exposure of dairy cows to these pathogens. In the present study, multiple multinomial logistic regression models were fitted via neural networks to describe the differences among farms where cattle were not exposed to either F. hepatica or O. ostertagi, to one parasite, or to both, respectively. Farm-specific production and management characteristics were used as covariates to portray these differences. This elucidated inherent farm characteristics associated with parasite exposure. In both studied regions, pasture access for cows, farm-level milk yield, and lameness prevalence were identified as relevant factors. In region 'South', adherence to organic farming principles was a further covariate of importance. In region 'North', the prevalence of cows with a low body condition score, herd size, hock lesion prevalence, farm-level somatic cell count, and study year appeared to be of relevance. The present study broadens our understanding of the complex epidemiological scenarios that could predict differential farm-level parasite status. The analyses have revealed the importance of awareness of dissimilarities between farms in regard to the differential exposure to F. hepatica and O. ostertagi. This provides solid evidence that dynamics and relevant factors differ depending on whether or not cows are exposed to F. hepatica, O. ostertagi, or to both.

Abstract
AbstractBovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic zoonotic disease that is endemic in China. Current in-vitro tests for bTB are mainly based on blood assays. Collection of samples results in some stress to the sampled cattle and associated economic losses for the herd owner. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between milk and serum antibody tests for bTB in dairy cows using 85 cows with milk and corresponding blood samples. Totally 4,395 milk samples were used to assesse the apparent (test) prevalence and incidence of bTB using the milk antibody ELISA. The association between levels of bTB milk antibody and milk quality was also evaluated. Milk and serum antibody tests showed a good correlation with a 87.5% (95% CI: 61.7%, 98.4) positive agreement and 98.7% (95% CI: 95.4, 99.8) negative agreement. The animal level lactoprevalence ranged from 0.3% (95% CI: 0, 1.2) to 33.3% (95% CI: 26.6, 40.6) in different farms and the incidence rate ranged from 0 head/cow-month (95% CI: 0, 0.02) to 0.04 head/cow-month (95% CI: 0.02, 0.07). Twenty percent of sampled farms met the criteria for bTB control in China. The prevalence on large-scale farms was lower (p < 0.001) than on small farms. The bTB milk antibody levels had a negative correlation with milk yield and a positive correlation with somatic cell count (SCC), milk protein percentage (MPP) and percentage of total solids (TS). According to this research, milk ELISA could be used as a supplement of blood samples to assist in the surveillance for bTB and for alerting control and eradication of bTB.

Abstract
Diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematodes in livestock and companion animals has been neglected for years and there has been an historical underinvestment in the development and improvement of diagnostic tools, undermining the undoubted utility of surveillance and control programmes. However, a new impetus by the scientific community and the quickening pace of technological innovations, are promoting a renaissance of interest in developing diagnostic capacity for nematode infections in veterinary parasitology. A cross-cutting priority for diagnostic tools is the development of pen-side tests and associated decision support tools that rapidly inform on the levels of infection and morbidity. This includes development of scalable, parasite detection using artificial intelligence for automated counting of parasitic elements and research towards establishing biomarkers using innovative molecular and proteomic methods. The aim of this review is to assess the state-of-the-art in the diagnosis of helminth infections in livestock and companion animals and presents the current advances of diagnostic methods for intestinal parasites harnessing (i) automated methods for copromicroscopy based on artificial intelligence, (ii) immunodiagnosis, and (iii) molecular- and proteome-based approaches. Regardless of the method used, multiple factors need to be considered before diagnostics test results can be interpreted in terms of control decisions. Guidelines on how to apply diagnostics and how to interpret test results in different animal species are increasingly requested and some were recently made available in veterinary parasitology for the different domestic species.

Abstract
Malnutrition is one of the main risk factors related to chronic non-communicable diseases and child undernourishment on a planetary scale. Mexico is one of the countries with the highest levels of malnutrition, but there is also an accelerated increase in overweight or obesity. This study explored the spatiotemporal behaviour of mortality associated with chronic non-communicable diseases such as type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. The analysis was carried out at the municipality level for the 2000-2020 period targeting two age groups: ≥60-year olds and 20-59-year olds. In addition, 0-4-year olds were investigated with respect to undernourishment. National databases were gathered and standardized for each disease and SaTScan spatiotemporal cluster analyses were performed. We found that mortality associated with most of the diseases evaluated has increased since 2016 except for mortality caused by child undernourishment, which showed a downward trend during the study period. To focus on active conglomerates of diseases is important as they currently represent a threat to public health. Our results contribute to the potential spatial prioritization of the allocation of resources and campaigns for prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases and child undernourishment. Generally, geographical studies are fundamental for the discovery of disease aetiology and they provide valuable and timely information to multiple stakeholders.

Abstract
Ostertagia ostertagi is an abomasal parasite with significant economic impact on the cattle industry. Early host immune responses are poorly understood. Here, we examined time course expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) during infection where PBMC macrophages (Mϕ) generated both pro- and anti-inflammatory responses when incubated with excretory/secretory products (ESP) from fourth-stage larvae (OoESP-L4) or adult worms (OoESP-Ad). First, changes in cell morphology clearly showed that both OoESP-L4 and OoESP-Ad activated PBMC-Mϕ in vitro, resulting in suppressed CD40 and increased CD80 expression. Expression of mRNAs for TLR1, -4, -5, and -7 peaked 7 days postinfection (dpi) (early L4), decreased by 19 dpi (postemergent L4 and adults) and then increased at 27 dpi (late adults). The proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (transcript and protein) increased in the presence of OoESP-Ad, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 (IL-10) (protein) decreased in the presence of OoESP-L4 or OoESP-Ad; however, IL-10 mRNA was upregulated, and IL-6 (protein) was downregulated by OoESP-L4. When PBMC-Mϕ were treated with ligands for TLR4 or TLR5 in combination with OoESP-Ad, the transcripts for TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, and IL-10 were significantly downregulated relative to treatment with TLR4 and TLR5 ligands only. However, the effects of TLR2 ligand and OoESP-Ad were additive, but only at the lower concentration. We propose that O. ostertagi L4 and adult worms utilize competing strategies via TLRs and Mϕ to confuse the immune system, which allows the worm to evade the host innate responses.

Abstract
Wide distribution of ecto- and endoparasites in cattle is a serious problem in the sustainability of a farm, due to the negative impact on animals' health and productivity. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of antibodies against Ostertagia and Hypoderma in udder milk samples and the comparison of milk yield and content of the basic components of milk in ELISA-positive and ELISA-negative cows. Milk samples were collected from 148 lactating cows from 3 herds. Antibody detection was performed using specific ELISAs for Ostertagia ostertagi and Hypoderma bovis. Milk yield and content of protein, fat, and dry matter were studied in samples from each individual cow 11 times per year at 4 week intervals. The extensiveness of dual parasitic invasions in individual herds, estimated on the basis of udder milk testing with the ELISA test, varied and amounted to 3.22%, 11.36%, and 4.76% in the three studied herds, respectively. No antibodies were found in 61.2%, 22.7%, and 57.1% of the milk samples from the cows in each herd. The milk yield of ELISA-positive cows was significantly lower in comparison to the efficiency of ELISA-negative cows and amounted to 294 kg and even to 3672 kg of milk per year, per cow. No significant differences were found between the fat and protein contents of milk between ELISA-positive and -negative cows for both parasites.

Abstract
This article reviews the basics of gastrointestinal nematode biology and pathophysiology in cattle and describes how gastrointestinal nematode epidemiology is driven by environmental, host, and farm economic determinants. Adverse effects from gastrointestinal nematodes on their hosts are caused by tissue damage, nutrient absorption, immunopathologic effects, and reduced food intake induced by hormonal changes. Weather and microenvironmental factors influence the development and survival of free-living parasitic stages. A holistic control approach entails the consideration of environmental, immunologic, and socioeconomic aspects of nematode epidemiology and is key for the development and communication of sustainable control strategies.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of fasciolosis in cattle herds and its influence on production in order to identify potential risk factors in different climate regions and risk indices in three states of Mexico. The levels of anti-F. hepatica IgG1 antibodies were determined using an indirect ELISA. A total of 837 farm owners or managers answered the questionnaire. The total prevalence of the parasite over the period of January to March 2017 was 63.56%. The highest percentages of positive herds for the categories were found in Hidalgo state (88.33%), the no-risk classification (69.55%) and the temperate climate (76.53%). Overall, the production losses were approximately 0.51 to 1.00 kg of milk per parasitized cow per day. The annual costs of milk production loss per farm were estimated to range from US$2218.39 to US$6424.51, followed by anthelmintic treatment for young stock (US$67.68) and adult cows (US$209.47). Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, six final models were constructed for potential association with the ELISA results and were supported by the climatic, environmental and management factors. The results indicate that different factors were significantly associated with an increased risk of infection for each model.

Abstract
AbstractFasciola hepatica is a helminth parasite that causes huge economic losses to the livestock industry worldwide. Fasciolosis is an emerging foodborne zoonotic disease that affects both humans and grazing animals. This study investigated the associations between climatic/environmental factors (derived from satellite data) and management factors affecting the spatial distribution of this liver fluke in cattle herds across different climate zones in three Mexican states. A bulk-tank milk (BTM) IgG1 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was used to detect F. hepatica infection levels of 717 cattle herds between January and April 2015. Management data were collected from the farms by questionnaire. The parasite's overall herd prevalence and mean optical density ratio (ODR) were 62.76% and 0.67, respectively. The presence of clustered F. hepatica infections was studied using the spatial scan statistic. Three marked clusters in the spatial distribution of the parasite were observed. Logistic regression was used to test three models of potential statistical association from the ELISA results using climatic, environmental and management variables. The final model based on climatic/environmental and management variables included the following factors: rainfall, elevation, proportion of grazed grass in the diet, contact with other herds, herd size, parasite control use and education level as significant predictors. Geostatistical kriging was applied to generate a risk map for the presence of parasites in dairy herds in Mexico. In conclusion, the spatial distribution of F. hepatica in Mexican cattle herds is influenced by multifactorial effects and should be considered in developing regionally adapted control measures.
