Plant disease recognition using fractional-order Zernike moments and SVM classifier

A dual-track feature fusion model utilizing Group Shuffle Residual DeformNet and swin transformer for the classification of grape leaf diseases

Grape cultivation is important globally, contributing to the agricultural economy and providing diverse grape-based products. However, the susceptibility of grapes to disease poses a significant threat to yield and quality. Traditional disease identification methods demand expert knowledge, which limits scalability and efficiency. To address these limitations our research aims to design an automated deep learning approach for grape leaf disease detection. This research introduces a novel dual-track network for classifying grape leaf diseases, employing a combination of the Swin Transformer and Group Shuffle Residual DeformNet (GSRDN) tracks. The Swin Transformer track exploits shifted window techniques to construct hierarchical feature maps, enhancing global feature extraction. Simultaneously, the GSRDN track combines Group Shuffle Depthwise Residual block and Deformable Convolution block to extract local features with reduced computational complexity. The features from both tracks are concatenated and processed through Triplet Attention for cross-dimensional interaction. The proposed model achieved an accuracy of 98.6%, the precision, recall, and F1-score are recorded as 98.7%, 98.59%, and 98.64%, respectively as validated on a dataset containing grape leaf disease information from the PlantVillage dataset, demonstrating its potential for efficient grape disease classification.

Recognition of 3D Images by Fusing Fractional-Order Chebyshev Moments and Deep Neural Networks

In order to achieve efficient recognition of 3D images and reduce the complexity of network parameters, we proposed a novel 3D image recognition method combining deep neural networks with fractional-order Chebyshev moments. Firstly, the fractional-order Chebyshev moment (FrCM) unit, consisting of Chebyshev moments and the three-term recurrence relation method, is calculated separately using successive integrals. Next, moment invariants based on fractional order and Chebyshev moments are utilized to achieve invariants for image scaling, rotation, and translation. This design aims to enhance computational efficiency. Finally, the fused network embedding the FrCM unit (FrCMs-DNNs) extracts depth features to analyze the effectiveness from the aspects of parameter quantity, computing resources, and identification capability. Meanwhile, the Princeton Shape Benchmark dataset and medical images dataset are used for experimental validation. Compared with other deep neural networks, FrCMs-DNNs has the highest accuracy in image recognition and classification. We used two evaluation indices, mean square error (MSE) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), to measure the reconstruction quality of FrCMs after 3D image reconstruction. The accuracy of the FrCMs-DNNs model in 3D object recognition was assessed through an ablation experiment, considering the four evaluation indices of accuracy, precision, recall rate, and F1-score.

An advanced approach for fig leaf disease detection and classification: Leveraging image processing and enhanced support vector machine methodology

In the rapidly evolving landscape of agricultural technology, image processing has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing critical agricultural challenges, with a particular focus on the identification and management of crop diseases. This study is motivated by the imperative need to enhance agricultural sustainability and productivity through precise plant health monitoring. Our primary objective is to propose an innovative approach combining support vector machine (SVM) with advanced image processing techniques to achieve precise detection and classification of fig leaf diseases. Our methodology encompasses a step-by-step process, beginning with the acquisition of digital color images of diseased leaves, followed by denoising using the mean function and enhancement through Contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization. The subsequent stages involve segmentation through the Fuzzy C Means algorithm, feature extraction via Principal Component Analysis, and disease classification, employing Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) in conjunction with SVM, Backpropagation Neural Network, and Random Forest algorithms. The results of our study showcase the exceptional performance of the PSO SVM algorithm in accurately classifying and detecting fig leaf disease, demonstrating its potential for practical implementation in agriculture. This innovative approach not only underscores the significance of advanced image processing techniques but also highlights their substantial contributions to sustainable agriculture and plant disease mitigation. In conclusion, the integration of image processing and SVM-based classification offers a promising avenue for advancing crop disease management, ultimately bolstering agricultural productivity and global food security.

Rapid measurement of brown tide algae using Zernike moments and ensemble learning based on excitation-emission matrix fluorescence

Accurate real-time prediction of microalgae density has great practical significance for taking countermeasures before the advent of Harmful algal blooms (HABs), and the non-destructive and sensitive property of excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) spectroscopy makes it applicable to online monitoring and control. In this study, an efficient image preprocessing algorithm based on Zernike moments (ZMs) was proposed to extract compelling features from EEM intensities images. The determination of the highest order of ZMs considered both reconstruction error and computational cost, then the optimal subset of preliminarily extracted 36 ZMs was screened via the BorutaShap algorithm. Aureococcus anophagefferens concentration prediction models were developed by combining BorutaShap and ensemble learning models (random forest (RF), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), and XGBoost). The experimental results show that BorutaShap_GBDT preserved the superior subset of ZMs, and the integration of BorutaShap_GBDT and XGBoost achieved the highest prediction accuracy. This research provides a new and promising strategy for rapidly measuring microalgae cell density.

Precision detection of crop diseases based on improved YOLOv5 model

Accurate identification of crop diseases can effectively improve crop yield. Most current crop diseases present small targets, dense numbers, occlusions and similar appearance of different diseases, and the current target detection algorithms are not effective in identifying similar crop diseases. Therefore, in this paper, an improved model based on YOLOv5s was proposed to improve the detection of crop diseases. First, the CSP structure of the original model in the feature fusion stage was improved, and a lightweight structure was used in the improved CSP structure to reduce the model parameters, while the feature information of different layers was extracted in the form of multiple branches. A structure named CAM was proposed, which can extract global and local features of each network layer separately, and the CAM structure can better fuse semantic and scale inconsistent features to enhance the extraction of global information of the network. In order to increase the number of positive samples in the model training process, one more grid was added to the original model with three grids to predict the target, and the formula for the prediction frame centroid offset was modified to obtain the better prediction frame centroid offset when the target centroid falled on the special point of the grid. To solve the problem of the prediction frame being scaled incorrectly during model training, an improved DIoU loss function was used to replace the GIoU loss function used in the original YOLOv5s. Finally, the improved model was trained using transfer learning, the results showed that the improved model had the best mean average precision (mAP) performance compared to the Faster R-CNN, SSD, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, YOLOv4-tiny, and YOLOv5s models, and the mAP, F1 score, and recall of the improved model were 95.92%, 0.91, and 87.89%, respectively. Compared with YOLOv5s, they improved by 4.58%, 5%, and 4.78%, respectively. The detection speed of the improved model was 40.01 FPS, which can meet the requirement of real-time detection. The results showed that the improved model outperformed the original model in several aspects, had stronger robustness and higher accuracy, and can provide better detection for crop diseases.

3D Object Recognition Using Fast Overlapped Block Processing Technique

Three-dimensional (3D) image and medical image processing, which are considered big data analysis, have attracted significant attention during the last few years. To this end, efficient 3D object recognition techniques could be beneficial to such image and medical image processing. However, to date, most of the proposed methods for 3D object recognition experience major challenges in terms of high computational complexity. This is attributed to the fact that the computational complexity and execution time are increased when the dimensions of the object are increased, which is the case in 3D object recognition. Therefore, finding an efficient method for obtaining high recognition accuracy with low computational complexity is essential. To this end, this paper presents an efficient method for 3D object recognition with low computational complexity. Specifically, the proposed method uses a fast overlapped technique, which deals with higher-order polynomials and high-dimensional objects. The fast overlapped block-processing algorithm reduces the computational complexity of feature extraction. This paper also exploits Charlier polynomials and their moments along with support vector machine (SVM). The evaluation of the presented method is carried out using a well-known dataset, the McGill benchmark dataset. Besides, comparisons are performed with existing 3D object recognition methods. The results show that the proposed 3D object recognition approach achieves high recognition rates under different noisy environments. Furthermore, the results show that the presented method has the potential to mitigate noise distortion and outperforms existing methods in terms of computation time under noise-free and different noisy environments.

Image classification and identification for rice leaf diseases based on improved WOACW_SimpleNet

In view of the problem that manual selection of hyperparameters may lead to low performance and large consumption of manpower cost of the convolutional neural network (CNN), this paper proposes a nonlinear convergence factor and weight cooperative self-mapping chaos optimization algorithm (WOACW) to optimize the hyperparameters in the identification and classification model of rice leaf disease images, such as learning rate, training batch size, convolution kernel size and convolution kernel number. Firstly, the opposition-based learning is added to the whale population initialization with improving the diversity of population initialization. Then the algorithm improves the convergence factor, increases the weight coefficient, and calculates the self-mapping chaos. It makes the algorithm have a strong ability to find optimization in the early stage of iteration and fast convergence rate. And disturbance is carried out to avoid falling into local optimal solution in the late stage of iteration. Next, a polynomial mutation operator is introduced to correct the current optimal solution with a small probability, so that a better solution can be obtained in each iteration, thereby enhancing the optimization performance of the multimodal objective function. Finally, eight optimized performance benchmark functions are selected to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, the experiment results show that the proposed WOACW outperforms than 5 other common improved whale optimization algorithms. The WOACW_SimpleNet is used to identify rice leaf diseases (rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, brown spot disease, sheath blight and tungro disease), and the experiment results show that the identification average recognition accuracy rate reaches 99.35%, and the F1-score reaches 99.36%.

Face Recognition Algorithm Based on Fast Computation of Orthogonal Moments

Face recognition is required in various applications, and major progress has been witnessed in this area. Many face recognition algorithms have been proposed thus far; however, achieving high recognition accuracy and low execution time remains a challenge. In this work, a new scheme for face recognition is presented using hybrid orthogonal polynomials to extract features. The embedded image kernel technique is used to decrease the complexity of feature extraction, then a support vector machine is adopted to classify these features. Moreover, a fast-overlapping block processing algorithm for feature extraction is used to reduce the computation time. Extensive evaluation of the proposed method was carried out on two different face image datasets, ORL and FEI. Different state-of-the-art face recognition methods were compared with the proposed method in order to evaluate its accuracy. We demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the highest recognition rate in different considered scenarios. Based on the obtained results, it can be seen that the proposed method is robust against noise and significantly outperforms previous approaches in terms of speed.

Improved Support Vector Machine and Image Processing Enabled Methodology for Detection and Classification of Grape Leaf Disease

In recent years, agricultural image processing research has been a key emphasis. Image processing techniques are used by computers to analyze images. New advancements in image capture and data processing have simplified the resolution of a wide range of agricultural concerns. Crop disease classification and identification are crucial for the agricultural industry’s technical and commercial well-being. In agriculture, image processing begins with a digital color picture of a diseased leaf. Plant health and disease detection must be monitored on a regular basis in property agriculture. Plant diseases have had a tremendous impact on civilization and the Earth as a whole. Extensions of detection strategies and classification methods try to identify and categorize each ailment that affects the plant rather than focusing on a single disease among several illnesses and symptoms. This article describes a new support vector machine and image processing-enabled approach for detecting and classifying grape leaf disease. The given architecture includes steps for image capture, denoising, enhancement, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, and detection. Image denoising is conducted using the mean function, image enhancement is performed using the CLAHE method, pictures are segmented using the fuzzy C Means algorithm, features are retrieved using PCA, and images are eventually classed using the PSO SVM, BPNN, and random forest algorithms. The accuracy of PSO SVM is higher in performing classification and detection of grape leaf diseases.

Image Classification and Recognition of Rice Diseases: A Hybrid DBN and Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

Rice blast, rice sheath blight, and rice brown spot have become the most popular diseases in the cold areas of northern China. In order to further improve the accuracy and efficiency of rice disease diagnosis, a framework for automatic classification and recognition of rice diseases is proposed in this study. First, we constructed a training and testing data set including 1,500 images of rice blast, 1,500 images of rice sheath blight, and 1,500 images of rice brown spot, and 1,100 healthy images were collected from the rice experimental field. Second, the deep belief network (DBN) model is designed to include 15 hidden restricted Boltzmann machine layers and a support vector machine (SVM) optimized with switching particle swarm (SPSO). It is noted that the developed DBN and SPSO-SVM can simultaneously learn three proposed features including color, texture, and shape to recognize the disease type from the region of interest obtained by preprocessing the disease images. The proposed model leads to a hit rate of 91.37%, accuracy of 94.03%, and a false measurement rate of 8.63%, with the 10-fold cross-validation strategy. The value of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) is 0.97, whose accuracy is much higher than that of the conventional machine learning model. The simulation results show that the DBN and SPSO-SVM models can effectively extract the image features of rice diseases during recognition, and have good anti-interference and robustness.

Novel encryption for color images using fractional-order hyperchaotic system

The fractional-order functions show better performance than their corresponding integer-order functions in various image processing applications. In this paper, the authors propose a novel utilization of fractional-order chaotic systems in color image encryption. The 4D hyperchaotic Chen system of fractional-order combined with the Fibonacci Q-matrix. The proposed encryption algorithm consists of three steps: in step#1, the input image decomposed into the primary color channels, R, G, & B. The confusion and diffusion operations are performed for each channel independently. In step#2, the 4D hyperchaotic Chen system of fractional orders generates random numbers to permit pixel positions. In step#3, we split the permitted image into 2 × 2 blocks where the Fibonacci Q-matrix diffused each of them. Experiments performed where the obtained results ensure the efficiency of the proposed encryption algorithm and its ability to resist attacks.

Identifying the Branch of Kiwifruit Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Images Using Deep Learning Method

It is important to obtain accurate information about kiwifruit vines to monitoring their physiological states and undertake precise orchard operations. However, because vines are small and cling to trellises, and have branches laying on the ground, numerous challenges exist in the acquisition of accurate data for kiwifruit vines. In this paper, a kiwifruit canopy distribution prediction model is proposed on the basis of low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images and deep learning techniques. First, the location of the kiwifruit plants and vine distribution are extracted from high-precision images collected by UAV. The canopy gradient distribution maps with different noise reduction and distribution effects are generated by modifying the threshold and sampling size using the resampling normalization method. The results showed that the accuracies of the vine segmentation using PSPnet, support vector machine, and random forest classification were 71.2%, 85.8%, and 75.26%, respectively. However, the segmentation image obtained using depth semantic segmentation had a higher signal-to-noise ratio and was closer to the real situation. The average intersection over union of the deep semantic segmentation was more than or equal to 80% in distribution maps, whereas, in traditional machine learning, the average intersection was between 20% and 60%. This indicates the proposed model can quickly extract the vine distribution and plant position, and is thus able to perform dynamic monitoring of orchards to provide real-time operation guidance.

UAV-Based Classification of Cercospora Leaf Spot Using RGB Images

Plant diseases can impact crop yield. Thus, the detection of plant diseases using sensors that can be mounted on aerial vehicles is in the interest of farmers to support decision-making in integrated pest management and to breeders for selecting tolerant or resistant genotypes. This paper investigated the detection of Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), caused by Cercospora beticola in sugar beet using RGB imagery. We proposed an approach to tackle the CLS detection problem using fully convolutional neural networks, which operate directly on RGB images captured by a UAV. This efficient approach does not require complex multi- or hyper-spectral sensors, but provides reliable results and high sensitivity. We provided a detection pipeline for pixel-wise semantic segmentation of CLS symptoms, healthy vegetation, and background so that our approach can automatically quantify the grade of infestation. We thoroughly evaluated our system using multiple UAV datasets recorded from different sugar beet trial fields. The dataset consisted of a training and a test dataset and originated from different fields. We used it to evaluate our approach under realistic conditions and analyzed its generalization capabilities to unseen environments. The obtained results correlated to visual estimation by human experts significantly. The presented study underlined the potential of high-resolution RGB imaging and convolutional neural networks for plant disease detection under field conditions. The demonstrated procedure is particularly interesting for applications under practical conditions, as no complex and cost-intensive measuring system is required.

Early Detection of Ganoderma boninense in Oil Palm Seedlings Using Support Vector Machines

Ganodermaboninense (G. boninense) is a fungus that causes one of the most destructive diseases in oil palm plantations in Southeast Asia called basal stem rot (BSR), resulting in annual losses of up to USD 500 million. The G. boninense infects both mature trees and seedlings. The current practice of detection still depends on manual inspection by a human expert every two weeks. This study aimed to detect early G. boninense infections using visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) hyperspectral images where there are no BSR symptoms present. Twenty-eight samples of oil palm seedlings at five months old were used whereby 15 of them were inoculated with the G. boninense pathogen. Five months later, spectral reflectance oil palm leaflets taken from fronds 1 (F1) and 2 (F2) were obtained from the VIS-NIR hyperspectral images. The significant bands were identified based on the high separation between uninoculated (U) and inoculated (I) seedlings. The results indicate that the differences were evidently seen in the NIR spectrum. The bands were later used as input parameters for the development of Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification models, and these bands were optimized according to the classification accuracy achieved by the classifiers. It was observed that the U and I seedlings were excellently classified with 100% accuracy using 35 bands and 18 bands of F1. However, the combination of F1 and F2 (F12) gave better accuracy than F2 and almost similar to F1 for specific classifiers. This finding will provide an advantage when using aerial images where there is no need to separate F1 and F2 during the data pre-processing stage.

Recognition of Common Non-Normal Walking Actions Based on Relief-F Feature Selection and Relief-Bagging-SVM

Action recognition algorithms are widely used in the fields of medical health and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR). The classification and recognition of non-normal walking actions and normal walking actions are very important for improving the accuracy of medical health indicators and PDR steps. Existing motion recognition algorithms focus on the recognition of normal walking actions, and the recognition of non-normal walking actions common to daily life is incomplete or inaccurate, resulting in a low overall recognition accuracy. This paper proposes a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) action recognition method based on Relief-F feature selection and relief-bagging-support vector machine (SVM). Feature selection using the Relief-F algorithm reduces the dimensions by 16 and reduces the optimization time by an average of 9.55 s. Experiments show that the improved algorithm for identifying non-normal walking actions has an accuracy of 96.63%; compared with Decision Tree (DT), it increased by 11.63%; compared with k-nearest neighbor (KNN), it increased by 26.62%; and compared with random forest (RF), it increased by 11.63%. The average Area Under Curve (AUC) of the improved algorithm improved by 0.1143 compared to KNN, by 0.0235 compared to DT, and by 0.04 compared to RF.

Grape Leaf Disease Identification Using Improved Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Anthracnose, brown spot, mites, black rot, downy mildew, and leaf blight are six common grape leaf pests and diseases, which cause severe economic losses to the grape industry. Timely diagnosis and accurate identification of grape leaf diseases are decisive for controlling the spread of disease and ensuring the healthy development of the grape industry. This paper proposes a novel recognition approach that is based on improved convolutional neural networks for the diagnoses of grape leaf diseases. First, based on 4,023 images collected in the field and 3,646 images collected from public data sets, a data set of 107,366 grape leaf images is generated via image enhancement techniques. Afterward, Inception structure is applied for strengthening the performance of multi-dimensional feature extraction. In addition, a dense connectivity strategy is introduced to encourage feature reuse and strengthen feature propagation. Ultimately, a novel CNN-based model, namely, DICNN, is built and trained from scratch. It realizes an overall accuracy of 97.22% under the hold-out test set. Compared to GoogLeNet and ResNet-34, the recognition accuracy increases by 2.97% and 2.55%, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model can efficiently recognize grape leaf diseases. Meanwhile, this study explores a new approach for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of plant diseases that establishes a theoretical foundation for the application of deep learning in the field of agricultural information.
