Vortexing/shaking-free solid phase extraction of lead(II) by using an urchin-like NiCo2O4 hollow microsphere adsorbent

Poly (deep eutectic solvents) as a new class of sustainable sorbents for solid phase extraction: application for preconcentration of Pb (II) from food and water samples

A new class of polymeric sorbents based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is introduced. These materials are obtained from simple and inexpensive precursors via an energy-efficient process. The primary benefit of these sorbents is that they possess the unique characteristics of DESs and porous materials simultaneously. Moreover, the possibility of tailoring deep eutectic solvents allows designing a specific polymer for a desired analyte, based on its physical and chemical properties. In this work, the deep eutectic solvent of tetrabutylammonium bromide and acrylic acid (1:2 molar ratio) was prepared and then polymerized under solventless condition. The synthesized polymer was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller analysis (BET) to evaluate the properties of the sorbent. The poly (TBAB-2AA DES) was applied as a selective sorbent for preconcentration of lead from food and water samples prior to its quantification by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). Variable factors affecting the extraction were optimized, and under the optimum conditions, the calibration plot was linear in the range 5.0-250.0 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation was (for n = 5) (RSD) < 3%. The limit of detection (LOD) and the enhancement factor were found to be 2.0 μg L^-1 and 50, respectively. Finally, the accuracy of the method was assessed by comparison of the results with those obtained by direct determination of lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and spiked real samples. The obtained recoveries were between 92 and 106%. Graphical abstract.

Effect of Urine Compounds on the Electrochemical Oxidation of Urea Using a Nickel Cobaltite Catalyst: An Electroanalytical and Spectroscopic Investigation

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of major urine compounds on the electro-oxidation activity of urea using a nickel cobaltite (NiCo₂O₄ ) catalyst. As a substrate, carbon paper exhibited better benchmark potential and current values compared with stainless steel and fluorine-doped tin oxide glass, which was attributed to its greater active surface area per electrode geometric area. CV analysis of synthetic urine showed that phosphate, creatinine, and gelatin (i.e., proteins) had the greatest negative effect on the electro-oxidation activity of urea, with decreases in peak current up to 80% compared to that of a urea-only solution. Further investigation of the binding mechanisms of the deleterious compounds using in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopy revealed that urea and phosphate weakly bind to NiCo₂O₄ through hydrogen bonding or long-range forces, whereas creatinine interacts strongly, forming deactivating inner-sphere complexes. Phosphate is presumed to disrupt the interaction between urea and NiCo₂O₄ by serving as a hydrogen-bond acceptor in place of catalyst sites. The weak binding of urea supports the hypothesis that it is oxidized through an indirect electron transfer. Outcomes of this study contribute to the development of electrolytic systems for treating source-separated urine.

Core-shell Fe3O4 polydopamine nanoparticles as sorbent for magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction of copper from food samples

In the present study, core-shell Fe₃O₄ polydopamine nanoparticles were synthesized and used for the first time as an adsorbent for the vortex assisted magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction of copper from food samples. After elution, copper in the solutions was determined by FAAS. The adsorbent was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, and zeta potential measurements. Various parameters affecting the magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction were evaluated. The optimum pH and magnetic adsorbent amount were found to be 5 and 40 mg, respectively. Elution was made by 3 mL of 2 mol L^-1 HNO₃.The major advantage of the method is the fast equilibration during adsorption without the need for vortexing or shaking. The preconcentration factor and detection limit of the method were found to be 150 and 0.22 mg L^-1, respectively. The precision (as RSD%) and adsorption capacity of the method were 3.7% and 28 mg g^-1, respectively. The method was successfully verified by analyzing four certified reference materials (SPS-WW1 Batch 114 Wastewater, TMDA-53.3 Lake water, BCR-482 Lichen and 1573a Tomato Leaves) and by addition/recovery tests of copper standard solution in organic baby food, muesli, macaroni, honey, and milk samples.
