Abstract
There has been an increased demand for dental bleaching globally irrespective of age and gender. Main drawbacks associated with conventional tooth bleaching agents have been compromised strength and mineral-content of tooth enamel which results in sensitivity, discomfort, roughness, and structure loss of human teeth. Currently, nanoparticles synthesized by green synthesis have gained popularity especially in medical and dental applications because of their versatile and beneficial nano-scaled features. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2Nps) in this study were prepared from green ecofriendly source using the aloe vera plant extract and were then characterized via dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), for size, shape, composition and true-phase. These TiO2 Nps were incorporated in commercial bleaching gel containing hydrogen peroxide to form a novel TiO2-bleaching gel which was used to bleach extracted anterior teeth belonging to four different age groups: 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years and ≥50 years. These teeth were investigated for micro-hardness (Vickers microhardness tester) and mineral-content (EDX spectroscopy) including sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium in an in-vitro environment both before and after bleaching. Results revealed that TiO2 Nps prepared by aloe vera plant were nanos-sized of about 37.91-49 nm, spherical shape, true anatase phase with pure titanium and oxygen in their composition. The values of Vickers micro-hardness and mineral-content (Na, Mg, P, Ca) of enamel specimens belonging to different age groups enhanced in a linear pattern before bleaching with the increase in age (p value < 0.05). There was negligible reduction observed in Vickers micro-hardness and mineral-content elements (Na, Mg, P, Ca) of all enamel specimens belonging to different ages after the bleaching (p value > 0.05). The novel TiO2-bleaching gel prepared was effective enough in preventing the declination in Vickers micro-hardness strength and mineral-content of all the enamel specimens belonging to different age groups even after the bleaching procedure which makes it a promising biomaterial.

Abstract
Objectives Previous in vitro studies determined the whitening effects of bleaching products on stained resin composite surfaces. This in vitro study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a whitening system on composite resin previously subjected to pigmentation, specifically examining the depth of whitening effectiveness within the material structure. Materials and Methods A commercially available nano-filled composite resin was used. Specimens were stained using a coffee-based solution and a 10% carbamide peroxide-based gel was employed as the whitening agent. The pigment's penetration and the effect of the bleaching gel were evaluated by measuring color (CieLab values) from the outer edge to the inner part of the specimens. Color measurements were taken at 14 points, starting from 0.1 mm from the external perimeter up to 3.0 mm. Results Analysis of variance tests showed a statistically significant difference between the Control Group (CG), Pigmentation Group, and Whitening Group. The whitening agent was effective up to 1.5 mm in depth, with Whiteness index (W) values not statistically different from those of CG up to 0.5 mm in depth. Conclusions Whitening agents on nano-filled resin composite previously pigmented appear effective in restoring the W to values similar to the original, particularly in the superficial layers of the sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Teeth bleaching is a common practice performed by dental hygienists and dentists to correct aesthetic problems due to dental discoloration. Patients' opinions on this procedure may be different according to their personal experiences, expectations and individual sensitivities. The aim of this study is to assess the degree of satisfaction and related sensitivity of patients to professional and home bleaching treatment. METHODS A questionnaire consisting of 12 multiple-choice questions was submitted to 625 subjects among general population. These were related to: 1) patient's age and whether the patient is a smoker; 2) personal satisfaction; and 3) post-treatment tooth sensitivity. Descriptive analyses of all variables in the questionnaire were performed, and statistical analyses between variables were carried out by Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact test. RESULTS Of the people surveyed, 66% performed home bleaching, while the remaining performed the treatment in a dental office. Thirty-three percent of patients had previously undergone teeth bleaching and the 95.7% stated that they were satisfied with the treatment. Of these, only 36.4% reported experiencing postoperative hypersensitivity. Most patients (91.3%) received professional scaling before undergoing bleaching treatment. CONCLUSIONS Patient satisfaction with tooth whitening treatment can vary from patient to patient and represents a strong indicator of treatment efficacy and suitability. A proper communication, careful management and individualized patient assessment are key to maximizing satisfaction and ensuring a positive and fulfilling patient experience.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the effect of antioxidant (sodium ascorbate) on tooth sensitivity after two in-office bleaching techniques (light-activated and chemical bleaching). MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten patients aged 18-25 were bleached in four groups according to bleaching materials and/or antioxidant used. Group A: Maxillary right quadrant received light-activated bleaching with antioxidant. Group B: Maxillary left quadrant received light-activated bleaching without antioxidant. Group C: Mandibular right quadrant received chemical bleaching without antioxidant. Group D: Mandibular left quadrant received chemical bleaching with antioxidant. The tooth sensitivity was recorded using Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Schiff Scale (SS) immediately after treatment, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month follow-up periods. RESULTS Group B exhibited higher sensitivity values than Group A. This difference was statistically significant on the first day after treatment (p = 0.027* in NRS and p = 0.046* in SS). Furthermore, antioxidant incorporation in Group D led to a reduction in teeth sensitivity values compared to Group C. This disparity was highly significant on the first day after treatment (p = 0.001* in NRS and p < 0.001** in SS). CONCLUSIONS The antioxidant (10% sodium ascorbate) reduces the intensity of tooth sensitivity at the different follow-up periods, especially after 1 day from bleaching. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Using 10% sodium ascorbate after bleaching is advisable to reduce post-operative tooth sensitivity.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this umbrella review is to evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of different teeth whitening techniques in-office (IO) and at-home (AH), regarding chromatic changes and teeth sensitivity. Materials and methods The search was carried out from several databases. The included studies were all systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis of RCT or quasi-RCT. The participants were patients that underwent external dental bleaching in permanent vital teeth. The interventions were in-office (IO) bleaching techniques and at-home (AT) bleaching techniques with different bleaching agents and concentrations. Results The search resulted in a total of 257 articles, and 28 SR were included in the qualitative analysis and nine in the quantitative analysis. There is no difference between in-office and at-home techniques in terms of color change (p = 0.95) and post-treatment sensitivity (p = 0.85). There is similarity risk and intensity of teeth sensitivity between AH and IO bleaching. IO bleaching with light-activated systems with low concentrations of bleaching agent showed similar results to IO bleaching techniques with high concentrated bleaching gels. With the application of the criteria of the AMSTAR 2 tool, the reviews were considered critically low to high. Conclusions There are no significant differences in terms of color change between the different bleaching techniques compared. Teeth sensitivity is always present regardless of the technique used. The use of light activation systems did not increase the intensity and risk of post-operative sensitivity.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in gel form on fracture strength, hybrid layer formation, and microtensile bond strength of endodontically treated teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Sixty bovine incisors were randomized into one of six groups (n = 10 incisors per group) defined by the interventions carried out after endodontic treatment. In the control group, no additional intervention was carried out, while all teeth in the five intervention groups were bleached with 40% H2 O2 and subsequently treated with alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 15% (15AT), 20% (20AT), or 25% (25AT), with 10% sodium ascorbate (10SA), or with nothing (40HP). Fracture strength was evaluated in a mechanical testing machine, hybrid layer formation was assessed using scanning electron microscopy, and bond strength was determined using microtensile bond-strength testing. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. No statistically significant difference regarding fracture strength was observed among groups. Hybrid layer formation was greater in the 15AT group than in groups 40HP and 10SA. Teeth in groups 15AT, 20AT, and 25AT demonstrated higher bond strength than teeth in groups 40HP and 10SA. Alpha-tocopherol, preferably at 15%, effectively reverses the deleterious effects, of bleaching, on hybrid layer formation and bond strength to dentin.

Abstract
This in vitro experimental investigation aimed to evaluate the impact of the combined application of a nanofiber scaffold (NS), a polymeric catalyst primer (PCP) containing 10 mg/mL of heme peroxidase enzyme, and violet LED (LEDv) on the esthetic efficacy (EE), trans-amelodentinal cytotoxicity (TC), and procedural duration of conventional in-office bleaching therapy. To achieve this, 96 standardized enamel/dentin discs were individually placed in artificial pulp chambers. A 35% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) bleaching gel was administered for 45, 30, or 15 min to the enamel, either previously coated with NS + PCP or left uncoated, followed by irradiation with LEDv for 15 min or no irradiation. The established groups were as follows: G1, negative control (no treatment); G2, 35% H2O2/45 min; G3, NS + PCP + LEDv; G4, NS + PCP + 35%H2O2/45 min + LEDv; G5, NS + PCP + 35%H2O2/30 min + LEDv; and G6, NS + PCP + 35%H2O2/15 min + LEDv. Extracts (culture medium + gel components diffused through the discs) were collected and applied to odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells. EE (ΔE00 and ΔWI) and TC were assessed using ANOVA/Tukey analysis (p < 0.05). The EE analysis revealed no statistical differences between G6 and G2 (p > 0.05). Cells in G6 exhibited higher viability and lower oxidative stress compared to other bleached groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, employing NS + PCP + LEDv to catalyze a 35%H2O2 bleaching gel applied for 15 min to the enamel resulted in successful esthetic improvements and reduced the cytotoxicity commonly linked with traditional in-office bleaching procedures.

Abstract
THE AIM OF THE STUDY Optimization of methods for treating dental discoloration using whitening systems based on hydrogen peroxide by laboratory studying their chemical properties. MATERIAL AND METHODS The effectiveness of the bleaching system was assessed by quantitatively assessing the color change of model samples of hydroxyapatite (HAP) in the CIE L*a*b* system on a Spectron-M color analyzer after exposure to coloring food media. Safety assessment was carried out on samples made from teeth removed according to indications. RESULTS The results of laboratory tests allow us to conclude that the Chairside Light Whitening System professional teeth whitening system fläsh. (WHITEsmile GmbH, Germany) has high whitening efficiency with a whitening degree of ~84%, which significantly exceeds the norm of GOST R 702.3.004-2021. the microhardness of the enamel of samples exposed to the whitening gel for 15 minutes changes extremely little. After exposure of the studied samples to the Chairside Light Whitening System fläsh whitening system for 45 minutes, an increase in digital microhardness indicators is observed, which indicates the dynamics of processes demineralizing the hard tooth structure. CONCLUSIONS Chairside Light Whitening System fläsh professional teeth whitening system has high whitening efficiency with minimal impact on the teeth structure and high safety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess whether bleaching gel volume influences chromatic changes, hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the pulp tissue. METHODOLOGY A total of 60 bovine teeth were divided into four groups, according to bleaching gel volume (n=15): without gel (WG); V30 (30 µL of 35% HP); V60 (60 µL); and V120 (120 μL). HP diffusion analysis was performed in the first session (T1). Chromatic changes (ΔE, ΔE00, and WID) were assessed after the first (T1), second (T2), third (T3) sessions, and 15 d (T4) after the end of treatment. Moreover, 20 rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) and their upper first molars were treated with different gel volumes: control (no treatment); V2 (2 μL of 17.5% HP); V4 (4 μL); and V8 (8 μL). After 24 h, rats were euthanized and the specimens processed for histological and immunohistochemical (nitric oxide synthase) evaluation. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05). RESULTS In vitro (bovine teeth), chromatic changes were not influenced by bleaching gel volume, showing similar values in all groups and sessions, except for the control group (p<0.05). The V120 group had the highest HP diffusion values (p<0.05). In vivo (pulp tissue), the V4 and V8 groups showed the highest inflammatory infiltrate in the pulp and significant oxidative stress (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The adverse effects on the dental pulp related to HP diffusion, pulp inflammation, and oxidative stress depend on bleaching gel volume, while the bleaching effect is not proportional to the volume used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Negative effects of bleaching on dentin have previously been reported in vitro. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of carbamide peroxide bleaching on dentin fatigue resistance using a clinically relevant in situ model. METHODS AND MATERIALS Following research ethics board approval, 60 human teeth requiring extraction were collected. Sterilized human dentin specimens were cut (1.2x1.2x10 mm) and secured into customized bleaching trays to be used by study participants. Participants were randomly assigned to either bleach (10% carbamide peroxide, n=23) or control (gel without bleach, n=26) treatment groups. Treatment was applied to the bleaching trays and worn overnight by participants for 14 days. After treatment completion, dentin specimens were removed from the bleaching trays and subjected to fatigue testing (10 N, 3 mm/s, 2x105 cycles) while submerged in artificial saliva. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was conducted to compare the number of cycles to failure during fatigue testing in both groups. A log rank test was run to determine if there were differences in the survival distribution between the two groups (α<0.05). RESULTS The median number of cycles to failure was 352 ± 202 and 760 ± 644 for the bleach and control groups, respectively. The survival distributions for the two groups were significantly different (p=0.020). Dentin fatigue resistance was significantly lower in the bleach group compared to the control. CONCLUSIONS Direct bleaching of human dentin using an at-home tray bleaching protocol in situ reduced dentin fatigue resistance. This has implications for tooth fracture risk and longevity.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effect of different bleaching methods 40% (hydrogen peroxide) HP and Zinc Phthalocyanine (ZP) activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the utilization of diverse procedures of reversal (10% ascorbic acid and 6% cranberry solution) on bond values, surface microhardness and surface roughness of bleached enamel surface. MATERIAL AND METHODS An aggregate of 60 extracted human mandibular molars was gathered and the buccal surface of each specimen was exposed to 2 mm of enamel surface for bleaching with chemical and photoactivated agents with the use of reversal solutions. Specimens were divided into six groups (n = 10) at random- Group 1: samples bleached with 40% HP with 10% ascorbic acid (reversal agent), group 2: ZP activated by PDT with 10% ascorbic acid (reversal agent), group 3: 40% HP with 6% cranberry solution as a reversal agent, group 4: ZP activated by PDT with 6% cranberry solution, group 5: 40% HP and group 6: ZP activated by PDT with no reversal agents. Resin cement restoration was performed via etch and rinse technique and SBS was estimated by using the universal testing machine, SMH by using Vickers hardness tester, and Ra by stylus profilometer. Statistical analysis was executed using the ANOVA test and the Tukey multiple tests (p<0.05). RESULTS Enamel surface bleached with 40% HP reversed with 10% ascorbic acid displayed the highest SBS while 40% HP with no reversal agent use showed the least SBS. For SMH, ZP activated by PDT when applied on the enamel surface and reversed with 10% ascorbic acid showed the highest SMH while when bleached with 40% HP and reversed with 6% cranberry solution showed the least SMH value. For Ra, Group 3: samples bleached with 40% HP with 6% cranberry solution as reversal agent showed the highest Ra value while bleaching of enamel surface with ZP activated by PDT with 6% cranberry displayed the least Ra value. CONCLUSION Bleached enamel surface with Zinc Phthalocyanine activated by PDT with the application of 10% ascorbic acid as reversal solution has demonstrated the highest SBS and SMH with acceptable surface roughness for bonding adhesive resin to the enamel surface.

Abstract
Whitening products commonly utilize hydrogen peroxide (HP) as an active principle, which can penetrate dental tissues with potential side effects due to its low molecular weight. This study aimed to evaluate the HP diffusion of two in-office whitening products, namely 6% VivaStyle Paint On Plus (VS) and Opalescence Boost 40% (OP), in different tooth types. Additionally, the influence of the area of exposure, dental tissue thickness and pulp chamber volume was assessed. Each group consisted of eighteen intact anterior (A), premolar (PM) and molar (M) human teeth, and a positive pulpal pressure model was employed. The samples were analyzed using spectrophotometry, and results were expressed as the mean and 95% confidence interval. Statistical tests and linear regression models were appropriately applied at α = 5%. The total HP (µg) retrieved was as follows: VS-A, 1.333 [1.214, 1.452]; OP-A, 1.538 [1.457, 1.620]; VS-PM, 1.208 [1.123, 1.291]; OP-PM, 3.628 [3.401, 3.855]; VS-M, 2.560 [2.297, 2.823]; and OP-M, 4.197 [3.997, 4.396], with statistically significant differences in diffusion kinetics between whitening products for PM and M. Several HP concentrations attained a minimum cytotoxicity value of 2.22 µg/mL. The regression model shows that OP exposed the pulp chamber to 1.421 µg of HP more than that of VS. Different whitening products can cause cytotoxic HP concentrations in the pulp chamber, with a higher risk observed in molars.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of two antioxidants and their application time on the fracture strength of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-fabricated ceramic laminate veneers to bleached enamel, as well as their effects on the bonding interface micromorphology. Eight groups were set: Group NC (without bleaching and antioxidant treatment); Group NA (bleaching without antioxidant treatment); Group SA30, SA60, SA120 and Group PAC30, PAC60, PAC120 (bleaching and treating with sodium ascorbate or proanthocyanidins for 30, 60, and 120 min, respectively). After cementation of veneers, fracture strength values and failure modes were analyzed. The bonding interface morphology was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The fracture strength was impaired when cementation procedure was performed immediately after bleaching. This reduction in fracture strength was reestablished with antioxidant treatment, and an extended treatment time contributed to better improvement. The resin tags at the bonding interfaces of the bleached enamel were impaired. Antioxidant treatments were able to reverse this unfavorable trend.

Abstract
With the increasing demand for tooth bleaching in esthetic dentistry, its safety has been the focus of a comprehensive body of literature. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the application effects of pentalysine β-carbonylphthalocyanine zinc (ZnPc(Lys)5)-mediated photodynamic therapy in dentin bleaching and its effects on dentin collagen. We first established a new and reproducible tooth staining model using dentin blocks stained by Orange II and then bleached with ZnPc(Lys)5 (25 μM) and hydrogen peroxide (10% or 30%). Data were analyzed with one- and two-way ANOVA and a significance level of p < 0.05. ZnPc(Lys)5 effectively bleached the dentin samples to an extent comparable to hydrogen peroxide at either 10% or 30% concentrations. Further studies on the dentin morphology, chemical element distribution, and protein constituents, using an electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and SDS-PAGE, demonstrated that treatment with the photosensitizer preserved the dentin structure and, at the same time, the major organic component, collagen type I. For comparison, hydrogen peroxide (10% or 30%) treatment significantly degraded the collagen protein. This work indicated that the photosensitizer exerts potent bleaching effects on dentin staining; importantly, does not damage dentin and its collagen content; and opens up a new strategy to further explore various photosensitizers for the bleaching of both tooth enamel and dentin.

Abstract
Exposure of dentin tubules due to loss of protective enamel (crown) and cementum (root) tissues as a result of erosion, mechanical wear, gingival recession, etc. has been the leading causes of dentin hypersensitivity. Despite being a widespread ailment, no permanent solution exists to address this oral condition. Current treatments are designed to alleviate the pain by either using desensitizers or blocking dentin tubules by deposition of minerals or solid precipitates, which often have short-lived effects. Reproducing an integrated mineral layer that occludes exposed dentin with concomitant peritubular mineralization is essential to reestablish the structural and mechanical integrity of the tooth with long-term durability. Here, we describe a biomimetic treatment that promotes dentin repair using a mineralization-directing peptide, sADP5, derived from amelogenin. The occlusion was achieved through a layer-by-layer peptide-guided remineralization process that forms an infiltrating mineral layer on dentin. The structure, composition, and nanomechanical properties of the remineralized dentin were analyzed by cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy imaging, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and nanomechanical testing. The elemental analysis provided calcium and phosphate compositions that are similar to those in hydroxyapatite. The measured average hardness and reduced elastic modulus values for the mineral layer were significantly higher than those of the demineralized and sound human dentin. The structural integration of the new mineral and underlying dentin was confirmed by thermal aging demonstrating no physical separation. These results suggest that a structurally robust and mechanically durable interface is formed between the interpenetrating mineral layer and underlying dentin that can withstand long-term mechanical and thermal stresses naturally experienced in the oral environment. The peptide-guided remineralization procedure described herein could provide a foundation for the development of highly effective oral care products leading to novel biomimetic treatments for a wide range of demineralization-related ailments and, in particular, offers a potent long-term solution for dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
A steadily increasing public demand for whiter teeth has resulted in the development of new oral care products for home use. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a new ingredient to whiten teeth. This systematic review focuses on the evidence of whether HAP can effectively whiten teeth. A systematic search using the PICO approach and PRISMA guidelines was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciFinder, and Google Scholar as databases. All study designs (in vitro, in vivo) and publications in foreign language studies were included. Of the 279 study titles that the searches produced, 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. A new "Quality Assessment Tool For In Vitro Studies" (the QUIN Tool) was used to determine the risk of bias of the 13 studies conducted in vitro. Moreover, 12 out of 13 studies had a low risk of bias. The in vivo studies were assigned Cochrane-based GRADE scores. The results in vitro and in vivo were consistent in the direction of showing a statistically significant whitening of enamel. The evidence from in vitro studies is rated overall as having a low risk of bias. The evidence from in vivo clinical trials is supported by modest clinical evidence based on six preliminary clinical trials. It can be concluded that the regular use of hydroxyapatite-containing oral care products effectively whitens teeth, but more clinical trials are required to support the preliminary in vivo evidence.

Abstract
Background Aesthetic expectations have increased the use of aesthetic materials in dentistry. Lithium disilicates are frequently used materials for these expectations. Bleaching is another method used to provide aesthetics. Bleaching processes on restorative materials are not fully known. This study investigated the effect of at-home and in-office bleaching methods on the color change, surface roughness, and topography of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic materials produced with two different techniques and subjected to different polishing procedures. Methods A total of 144 disc-shaped pressed and computer-aided design (CAD) lithium disilicate glass-ceramic specimens were randomly divided into four groups. Glazing and three different chair-side polishing procedures were performed. The specimens in each group were randomly divided into two groups and subjected to at-home and in-office bleaching processes (n=9). The home bleaching process was repeated with 16% carbamide peroxide agent for six hours for seven days, while the in-office bleaching process was applied with 40% hydrogen peroxide agent for two sessions of 20 minutes. After the bleaching processes, the final color and surface roughness experiments of the specimens were carried out, and the results were recorded. ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used FOR the statistical analysis of the data (α=0.05). Results The material*polish*bleaching, polish*bleaching, material*bleaching, and material*polishing interactions were not statistically significant regarding color and roughness changes of both specimens (P>0.05). Conclusion Both bleaching processes can be safely applied to lithium disilicate glass-ceramic materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the potential influence of violet LED (V-LED) application time on the esthetic efficacy and cytotoxicity of a 35% H2O2 bleaching gel. METHODOLOGY Stained and standardized enamel/dentin discs were subjected to one in-office tooth bleaching session (45 min), and the gel was either irradiated or not with V-LED. Thus, the following groups were established (n = 8): G1: No treatment (negative control, NC); G2: 35% H2O2 (positive control, PC); G3: 35%H2O2 + V-LED/15 min; G4: 35%H2O2 + V-LED/30 min; G5: 35%H2O2 + V-LED/45 min. First, esthetic efficacy was assessed (ΔE00 and ΔWI). Discs assembled in artificial pulp chambers were subjected to the same bleaching treatments. Then, the extracts (culture medium + diffused bleaching gel components) were collected and applied to MDPC-23 pulp cells, which were analyzed for viability (Live/Dead, MTT) and oxidative stress (OxS). The amount of H2O2 in the extracts was also determined (leuco crystal-violet/peroxidase). The data were subjected to ANOVA/Tukey at a 5% significance level. RESULTS Although esthetic efficacy did not differ among the irradiated groups (G3, G4, and G5) (p > 0.05), their results were higher than in G2 (PC; p < 0.05). In the irradiated groups, the cell viability and OxS as well as the amount of H2O2 in the extracts were statistically similar to G2 (PC), regardless of irradiation time (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Although V-LED improves the esthetic outcome of in-office tooth bleaching, increasing irradiation time does not effect the color changes and cytotoxicity of this professional therapy.

Abstract
Whitening has been known since Biblical times. Nowadays, in the developed world, patients are placing a stronger interest in the aesthetic appearance of their teeth. As a result, public demand for aesthetic dentistry, including tooth whitening, has recently increased. Aesthetics of the teeth is of great importance to many patients.
The aim is to summarise and discuss the teeth whitening procedure, tools, materials, and methods, as well as its efficacy and safety. In addition, the paper aims to provide full and comprehensive information for dentists and their patients about the merits and perils of whitening.
Methods. Relevant literature from Scopus published in English was selected using the following search criteria "tooth OR teeth AND whitening OR bleaching" by 2022. In total, there were found 3840 papers. Then, we applied the inclusion and exclusion criteria to the selected scientific papers to choose the relevant ones.
Results. A comprehensive study of the available information related to means and products for teeth whitening was carried out. Whitening may be accomplished by the physical removal of the stain or a chemical reaction to lighten the tooth colour. The indications for appropriate use of tooth-whitening methods and products depend on the correct diagnosis of the discolouration. When used appropriately, tooth-whitening methods are safe and effective.
Conclusions. Tooth whitening is a form of dental treatment and should be completed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan developed by a dentist after an oral examination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are a number of different substances and treatments that are effective in mitigating the negative effects of tooth bleaching. It is essential, however, to consider whether or not the presence of these factors affects the efficiency of the bleaching agent. AIM The purpose of this study is to determine how the pretreated enamel with a Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser affects the bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 35%. METHODS AND MATERIALS Thirty samples were prepared from human-extracted permanent anterior teeth and stained using a tea solution. Based on the pre-treatment protocol, the samples were split into two equal groups (n = 15): In Group I, samples were submerged in saline solution for five minutes, while in Group II, Nd:YAG laser treatment was performed. Following pretreatment, samples from both groups were bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide. Colour analysis of all samples was done before and after bleaching using a spectrophotometer. For the colour analysis, the CIE L*a*b* (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) System of colour measurement was used. For statistical analysis, Student t-tests (two-tailed, unpaired) were used to compare the means of two groups on a continuous scale. RESULTS Samples from both groups became lighter in colour following bleaching. After bleaching, there was no discernible difference in the total colour change between the two groups. CONCLUSION The application of the Nd:YAG laser before bleaching did not influence the whitening efficacy of 35% hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract
This in vitro study investigated the extrinsic tooth-whitening effect of bleaching products containing polyphosphates on the dental enamel surface compared to 10% carbamide peroxide (CP). Eighty human molars were randomly allocated into four whitening-products groups. Group A (control) was treated with 10% CP (Opalescence). The other groups with non-CP over-the-counter (OTC) products were group B = polyphosphates (iWhiteWhitening-Kit); group C = polyphosphates+fluoride (iWhite-toothpaste); and group D = sodium bicarbonate (24K-Whitening-Pen). L*, a*, b* color-parameters were spectrophotometer-recorded at baseline (T0), one day (T1), and one month (T2) post-treatment. Changes in teeth color (ΔEab) were calculated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). Groups A, B, and D showed significant differences in ΔL*&Δa* parameters at T1, but not in Δb* at T0. Group C showed no difference for ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* at T0 and T1. Group A showed differences for ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, at T2, while groups B, C, and D had no difference in any parameters at T0. At T1, ΔEab values = A > D> B > C (ΔEab = 13.4 > 2.4 > 2.1 > 1.2). At T2, ΔEab values increased = A > B > C > D (ΔEab = 12.2 > 10.6 > 9.2 > 2.4). In conclusion, the 10% CP and Biomimetic polyphosphate extrinsic whitening kit demonstrated the highest color change, while simulated brushing with dark stain toothpaste and a whitening pen demonstrated the lowest color change at both measurement intervals.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bioactive glass (BAG) 45S5 paste on colour change and tooth sensitivity (TS) when used in combination with 20% carbamide peroxide (CP) during at-home vital tooth bleaching. Methods Twenty-four patients were selected and assigned into two experimental groups (n = 12) in a double-blind study design. Each patient received 20% CP followed by the application of either BAG paste or non-active placebo paste. The shade evaluation was performed using a digital spectrophotometer based on the CIE L*a*b* colour space system at different time points and the overall colour changes ΔE were calculated. TS was evaluated using visual analogue scale (VAS). The values of ΔE and TS were statistically analysed using paired t-test. The level of statistical significance was established at p = 0.05. Results The overall colour changes (ΔE) between baseline and each time point showed no significant differences between BAG and placebo groups (p > 0.05). The use of BAG paste significantly decreased TS reported by the participants. Conclusions The association of BAG paste with at-home bleaching treatment presents a promising method as it decreased TS and did not deteriorate bleaching efficacy. Abstract
This in vitro study aimed to investigate the effect of quercetin pretreatment on the bond strength of bleached dentin. Human dentin blocks (2 × 2 × 1 mm) were prepared and randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 16): deionized water pretreatment + no bleaching treatment (DNB); deionized water pretreatment + bleaching treatment (DYB); 75 μg/mL quercetin pretreatment + bleaching (Q75B); 150 μg/mL quercetin pretreatment + bleaching (Q150B); and 300 μg/mL quercetin pretreatment + bleaching (Q300B). The surfaces of superficial dentin (bonding surfaces) were treated with the respective solutions for 2 min, and then the surfaces opposite to the bonding surfaces (near pulp, bleaching surfaces) were subjected to bleaching treatment with 40% hydrogen peroxide (Ultradent, USA) for two 15-min sessions (groups DYB, Q75B, Q150B, and Q300B). After the bleaching procedure, the bonding surfaces were bonded with resin cements (Panavia V5, Kuraray, Japan). The bonded specimens were then divided into 2 subgroups (n = 8): the aging group (subgroup T), which was subjected to 10,000 thermocycles, and the nonaging group (subgroup N), which was not subjected to thermocycling. The microshear bond strength (μSBS) was obtained using a universal testing machine (AGS-X, Shimadzu, Tokyo, Japan). Additional dentin blocks (5 × 5 × 1 mm) were prepared and treated the same as the groups DYB, Q75B, Q150B, and Q300B (n = 8) to evaluate the color change, defined as groups CCDYB, CCQ75B, CCQ150B, and CCQ300B, respectively. Color evaluation was performed using a spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade Advance 4.0, Vident, USA) to obtain a baseline and again at the end of the bleaching treatment. The data were analyzed via two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). For the immediate bond strength, the specimens in the groups Q75B, Q150B, and Q300B showed significantly higher μSBS values than those in the group DYB (all P < 0.05). No significant differences in the μSBS values were found among the groups Q75B, Q150B, Q300B, and DNB, respectively (all P > 0.05). For the aged bond strength, both the groups Q150B and Q300B exhibited significantly higher μSBS values than groups DYB and DNB (all P < 0.05), whereas no significance differences were found between groups Q150B and Q300B (P = 1.00) or between the groups DYB and DNB (P = 1.00). No significant differences were observed in the △E values among all the groups tested (P = 0.80). Therefore, the application of quercetin for 2 min prior to the bleaching procedure preserved the immediate bond strength and improved the aged bond strength of bleached dentin while maintaining the effectiveness of bleaching.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate and compare the impacts of the postbleaching application of sodium ascorbate, alpha-tocopherol, and quercetin on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS 60 extracted intact maxillary first premolars were collected and were randomly divided into five experimental groups as follows (n=12): Group A (negative control): no bleaching, Group B (positive control): bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP), Group C: HP±10% sodium ascorbate for 10min, Group D: HP±10% alpha-tocopherol for 10min, and Group E: HP±1% quercetin for 10min. Composite bonding was done immediately after bleaching for Groups B-E and without any treatment for Group A. After being stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24h, all specimens were tested for SBS in the universal testing machine. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test were used to analyze the SBS values of all groups. RESULTS The results showed that the bonding of composite to the unbleached group exhibited the highest mean value of SBS (22.68±2.91MPa). Among the antioxidant-treated groups, the highest SBS value was detected in quercetin-treated specimens (15.45±1.58MPa), which was significantly different from the positive control group (p<.05). CONCLUSION It could be concluded that 10% quercetin applied for 10min increased the bond strength to bleached enamel, but it was not able to reverse it completely.

Altered physical-chemical properties of home bleaching gels after an accelerated stability study and their effects on tooth enamel. Clin Oral Investig 2022; 26:7229-7242. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the physical-chemical properties of home bleaching gels based on Carbamide Peroxide (CP) and Hydrogen Peroxide (HP) after accelerated stability (AS) and its effects on enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 360 bovine teeth blocks were divided (n = 12): Control, CP10%-Whiteness Perfect, CP10%-Pola Night, HP7.5%-Pola Day, and HP7.5%-White Class Calcium. Microhardness (KHN), roughness (Ra), color (ΔE and ΔE00), hardness, compressibility, elasticity, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, weight, pH, and calcium (Ca) quantification in enamel were analyzed without storage of the bleaching gels and after AS at 1 and 3 months. Data of Ca, KHN, and Ra were analyzed through mixed models for repeated measurements and the Tukey-Kramer test. Values of weight, hardness, compressibility, and elasticity were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. ΔE/ΔE00 data, cohesiveness, and adhesiveness were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS Groups subject to AS had lower ΔE and ΔE00 compared to those without storage. Lower KHN and higher Ra values were found after bleaching treatment in all groups compared to controls. Higher amounts of Ca were found on the first day of evaluation in the gels subject to AS for 3 months, regardless of the bleaching agent used. CONCLUSIONS Incorrectly stored bleaching gel accentuates adverse effects on enamel. Temperature and humidity interfere directly with the chemical stability of bleaching agents, reducing their properties. CLINICAL RELEVANCE HP is an unstable oxidizing agent when stored at high temperatures. Therefore, pH becomes more acidic and potentiates the demineralizing effect on enamel.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the postbrushing tooth-whitening effect of toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nano-HAPs). The impact of the concentration on the whitening performance of nano-HAP toothpaste was also investigated. Methods Two concentrations of nano-HAP (10 wt% and 1 wt%) were incorporated in nonabrasive toothpastes. Forty bovine incisors were randomly assigned into four groups: 10 wt% nano-HAP, 1 wt% nano-HAP, toothpaste without nano-HAP as a negative control and water as a blank control. Each tooth was treated with the toothpaste three times and hydrodynamic shear force (HSF) once. The teeth surfaces were observed by SEM after each application. Tooth color (L*, a* and b* values) was measured by a spectrophotometer, and color changes (△E, △L, △a and △b values) were calculated. Two-way mixed ANOVA was performed to evaluate the influence of the concentration and repeated application on the tooth-whitening effect of nano-HAP. Results We found that nano-HAP-treated enamel exhibited higher L* values and lower a* and b* values than the control groups (P < 0.05). The 10 wt% nano-HAP group showed significantly higher △E values than the 1 wt% nano-HAP group (P < 0.05). After three applications, the △E mean value of the 10 wt% nano-HAP group was 4.47. The △E and △L values were slightly reduced after HSF (P < 0.05). For both nano-HAP groups, HAP single crystallites and agglomerates were identified, and their sizes grew with nano-HAP reapplication. Conclusions In conclusion, nano-HAP toothpaste has a satisfying postbrushing whitening effect and good resistance to mechanical forces. The whitening effect seemed to be concentration-dependent.

Abstract
Tooth whitening has recently become one of the most popular aesthetic dentistry procedures. Beyond classic hydrogen peroxide-based whitening agents, photo-catalysts and piezo-catalysts have been demonstrated for non-destructive on-demand tooth whitening. However, their usage has been challenged due to the relatively limited physical stimuli of light irradiation and ultrasonic mechanical vibration. To address this challenge, we report here a non-destructive and convenient tooth whitening strategy based on the pyro-catalysis effect, realized via ubiquitous oral motion-induced temperature fluctuations. Degradation of organic dyes via pyro-catalysis is performed under cooling/heating cycling to simulate natural temperature fluctuations associated with intake and speech. Teeth stained by habitual beverages and flavorings can be whitened by the pyroelectric particles-embedded hydrogel under a small surrounding temperature fluctuation. Furthermore, the pyro-catalysis-based tooth whitening procedure exhibits a therapeutic biosafety and sustainability. In view of the exemplary demonstration, the most prevalent oral temperature fluctuation will enable the pyro-catalysis-based tooth whitening strategy to have tremendous potential for practical applications.

Abstract
H2O2 sensing is required in various biological and industrial applications, for which electrochemical sensing is a promising choice among various sensing technologies. Electrodes and electrocatalysts strongly influence the performance of electrochemical H2O2 sensors. Significant efforts have been devoted to electrode nanostructural designs and nanomaterial-based electrocatalysts. Here, we review the design strategies for electrodes and electrocatalysts used in electrochemical H2O2 sensors. We first summarize electrodes in different structures, including rotation disc electrodes, freestanding electrodes, all-in-one electrodes, and representative commercial H2O2 probes. Next, we discuss the design strategies used in recent studies to increase the number of active sites and intrinsic activities of electrocatalysts for H2O2 redox reactions, including nanoscale pore structuring, conductive supports, reducing the catalyst size, alloying, doping, and tuning the crystal facets. Finally, we provide our perspectives on the future research directions in creating nanoscale structures and nanomaterials to enable advanced electrochemical H2O2 sensors in practical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the physical-chemical (weight, pH, quantification of hydrogen peroxide) and mechanical (texture profile and rheology tests) properties of the experimental bleaching gel based on the bioadhesive polymer Aristoflex® AVC, after accelerated stability testing. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 300 syringes of bleaching gels were divided into 5 groups (n = 60): Whiteness Perfect® 10%-FGM (WP); carbamide peroxide 10% with aristoflex (CPa); carbamide peroxide 10% with Carbopol (CPc); aristoflex thickener (A); and Carbopol thickener (C). According to the following requirements and time, the accelerated stability test was performed: in an incubator at 40 °C and 75% humidity per 1, 3, and 6 months, and baseline (refrigerator at 5 °C and 25% humidity). The variables were analyzed following the statistical tests: Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were applied to pH; weight data were analyzed using a mixed model for repeated measurements over time and the Tukey-Kramer test; one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test analyzed the rheology test; generalized linear models were used to quantify the peroxide amount and texture profile data. A significance level of 5% was considered. RESULTS The experimental bleaches CPa and CPc had the highest pH values when compared to the others in 6 months. Thickeners A and C did not change the pH, weight, and active content over the accelerated stability times (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there was weight loss after 3 months of storage for CPa and CPc (p < 0.05). In the quantification of hydrogen peroxide, the WP group showed the highest values over time (p < 0.0001), only showing a significant loss after the 3rd month. Meanwhile, CPa and CPc showed a reduction in quantification from the 1st month. CONCLUSIONS Temperature and humidity directly influenced the active content and properties of bleaching gels. In addition, the presence of components regardless of thickeners, such as stabilizers, in the commercial gel allowed for greater stability over time. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The development of experimental bleaching gels for clinical use requires careful testing. Therefore, accelerated stability testing represents a valuable tool in the development and evaluation of cosmetic formulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The authors aimed to evaluate the effect of a novel radiofrequency (RF) toothbrush on tooth stains and shades compared with a sonic vibrating toothbrush (CVS Health SmileSonic Pro Advanced Clean Sonic Toothbrush, Ranir) that earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. METHODS The authors conducted a single-blind prospective study over 6 weeks. Participants were randomized to 1 of 2 study groups to receive either an RF toothbrush (ToothWave, Home Skinovations [test]) or a sonic vibrating toothbrush (SmileSonic powered toothbrush, Ranir [control]) and performed twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste (Crest Cavity Protection, Procter & Gamble) for 6 weeks. Tooth stains and shades were assessed using the Lobene Stain Index and VITA Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER shade guide (VITA North America) at baseline and after 4 and 6 weeks of toothbrushing. In addition, the VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0 spectrophotometer (VITA North America) was used for shade evaluation. Safety was evaluated by means of oral soft-tissue examinations at each visit. Percentage reduction from baseline was compared between the groups. Statistical analyses were conducted using Mann-Whitney nonparametric model. RESULTS Eighty-six participants (43 in each group) completed the study with fully evaluable data. At baseline, the groups did not differ significantly in mean measurement scores. Percentage reductions of the measured scores were significantly greater (more extrinsic stain removal and whitening) in the test group than in the control group (P < .001). Both toothbrushes were well-tolerated, and no device-related adverse events were reported during the study. CONCLUSIONS The RF toothbrush produced substantial benefits in the reduction of tooth stains and whitening of tooth shade compared with a powered toothbrush (CVS Health SmileSonic Pro Advanced Clean Sonic Toothbrush, Ranir) that earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The novel RF toothbrush is a safe and effective tool for stain removal and tooth whitening and can serve as an alternative to other whitening agents. This clinical trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. The registration number is NCT03885609.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to develop a novel bleaching material containing hydrated calcium silicate (hCS) particles and investigate the effects of hCS on the bleaching efficacy, microhardness, and surface morphology of bovine enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS To prepare the hCS particles, white Portland cement was mixed with distilled water and ground into a fine powder. The particles in various proportions were then mixed with 35% hydrogen peroxide solution (HP), while HP without hCS was used as a control (HP), and teeth whitening gel was used as a commercial control (CC). Following the thrice application of experimental and control solutions on the discolored bovine enamel surface for 15 min, color change (n = 10), microhardness (n = 10), and micromorphology (n = 2) of the enamel surface were analyzed. RESULTS The Δ E* of the enamel surface treated with the experimental solution containing hCS was significantly higher than that of the CC, but there were no significant differences between the different hCS contents. The experimental solution containing hCS reduced the percentage of microhardness loss on the enamel surface, and the percentage of microhardness loss significantly decreased as the content of hCS increased (p < 0.05). The erosion pattern was only observed on enamel surfaces treated with HP and CC. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that HP containing hCS is effective in bleaching efficacy. In addition, hCS could also minimize the microhardness loss of tooth structure caused by HP and maintain enamel surface morphology. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This novel bleaching material is promising for inhibiting demineralization and promoting the remineralization of teeth during bleaching treatment in dental clinics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the current importance of dental whitening, multiple studies have been carried out in order to achieve an efficient, effective, and innocuous procedure. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness and sensitivity of in-office dental bleaching with one versus two applications of 6% hydrogen peroxide (HP) gel with nitrogen titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles activated by LED/Laser lamp in a single-session. METHODS This RCT with a split-mouth design was performed in twenty-seven volunteers. The in-office dental bleaching technique was performed using 6% HP with nitrogen TiO2 nanoparticles. In each patient, groups were randomized by hemiarch: Group 1 received one application of 72 minutes and Group 2 received two applications of 36 minutes, both groups in a single-session. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the effectiveness of a single-session with one or two applications of 6% HP with nitrogen TiO2 nanoparticles between both groups(p>0.05). A positive and increase of ∆E value was observed in both groups. Group 1 showed an increase of 4.45 in the immediate measurement, remaining at 4.41 until the one-week control, to increase up to an ∆E of 4.99 at one-month control. Group 2 showed a sustained increase of 4.02 units in the immediate control until reaching the maximum value of 5.46 units of ∆E at one-month control. CONCLUSION One session single application protocol of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide gel with nanoparticulate TiO2 activated by LED/Laser is effective and efficient for dental bleaching.

Abstract
Tooth bleaching is becoming increasingly popular among patients with tooth staining, but the safety of bleaching agents on tooth structure has been questioned. Primarily thriving on the biofilm formation on enamel surface, Streptococcus mutans has been recognized as a major cariogenic bacterial species. The present study is aimed at investigating how cold-light bleaching would change enamel roughness and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans. Human premolars were divided into 72 enamel slices and allocated into 3 groups: (1) control, (2) cold-light bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide (Beyond™), and (3) 35% hydrogen peroxide (Beyond™) alone. Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans were cultivated on enamel slices in 5% CO2 (v/v) at 37°C for 1 day or 3 days. Enamel surfaces and biofilms were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to quantify the roughness of enamel surface, and the amounts of biofilms were measured by optical density of scattered biofilm and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Cold-light bleaching significantly increased (p < 0.05) surface roughness of enamel compared to controls, but significantly inhibited (p < 0.05) adhesion of Streptococcus mutans on enamel in the bacterial cultures of both 1 day and 3 days. In conclusion, cold-light bleaching could roughen enamel surface but inhibit Streptococcus mutans adhesion at the preliminary stage after the bleaching treatment.

Abstract
Background: Tooth-whitening procedures have gained wide popularity among the Saudi population. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception about tooth-whitening procedures among Jeddah's general population. Materials and Methods: A face-to-face interview was conducted on randomly selected female patients attending dental clinics. A pretested and structured questionnaire was used to record the response by calibrated interviewers. The responses regarding knowledge, attitude, and perceptions were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The findings showed that the prevalence of tooth whitening among the participants was 43.7%, and about 8.7% reported that they did it once every year. In-office bleaching was the most preferred method (31.4%), followed by whitening toothpaste (8.7%). An increased frequency of bleaching was reported by participants belonging to younger age group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The knowledge related to the mechanism of action and adverse effects was average among the participants. Younger age groups were more concerned about tooth-whitening procedures compared to the older ones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the influence of smoking on the oral cells genotoxicity before and after at-home bleaching using 22% carbamide peroxide (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a prospective observational analytics cohort study which evaluated nonsmokers (NS; n = 24) and smokers (S; n = 16) patients. At-home bleaching was performed using 22% CP gel in individual trays for 1 h per day for 14 days in both groups. Scrapped cells from marginal gums were collected before the bleaching treatment (D0-baseline) and 1 day (D1), 15 days (D15), and 1 month (D30) after its finishing. Cells were stained with Giemsa 10%, and the micronucleus (MN) and metanuclear alterations (MA) were counted by a trained operator in 1000 cells per patient. The collections and data analysis occurred blindly. Data was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and Mann-Whitney test (α = 0.05). RESULTS MN frequency was not influenced by smoking or bleaching. An increase of MA was observed between D0 and D30 for both groups (p < 0.001); however, no statistical difference was found between NS and S (p > 0.05) in the evaluation times. CONCLUSION Smoking associated with 22% carbamide peroxide gel for at-home bleaching does not show genotoxic potential analyzed by the MN counts. However, a significant increase of MA was found for smokers and nonsmokers. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Despite of the increase in MA, smoking associated with 22% CP peroxide at-home bleaching showed no important genotoxic potential (MN) for oral cells. Therefore, at-home bleaching treatment is safe for nonsmokers and smokers even with a high carbamide peroxide concentration of 22%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial was to evaluate different protocols for at-home use of 10% hydrogen peroxide in whitening effectiveness and tooth sensitivity. METHODS Seventy-two patients were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with the upper central incisors having color A2 or darker according to the Vita Classical scale (VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) and randomized into two groups: 10% hydrogen peroxide applied once daily for 15 minutes (HP 15) or applied once daily for 30 minutes (HP 30). Bleaching was performed for 14 days in both groups. The color was evaluated before bleaching, during bleaching (1st and 2nd weeks), and 1 month after the bleaching treatment using the Vita Classical, Vita Bleachedguide 3D-MASTER, and Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer (VITA Zahnfabrik). Dental sensitivity was recorded by the patients using the numerical rating scale (0-4) and visual analogue scale (0-10 cm). Color data were evaluated by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) of repeated measures (group vs. treatment time). The Mann-Whitney test was performed to contrast the means (α=0.05). Tooth sensitivity was assessed by Fisher's exact test (p=1.00) and intensity of tooth sensitivity was evaluated by the Mann-Whitney test (α=0.05) for both scales. RESULTS A significant whitening effect was observed after 2 weeks of bleaching for all color measurements (p=0.01), with no difference between HP 15 and HP 30 (p>0.05). Also, the absolute risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity were similar (47%; p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The effectiveness and tooth sensitivity of at-home bleaching carried out with 10% hydrogen peroxide applied for 15 minutes or 30 minutes are similar.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the viability of dental cells following time-dependent carbamide peroxide teeth-whitening treatments using an in-vitro dentin perfusion assay model. 30 teeth were exposed to 5% or 16% CP gel (4 h daily) for 2-weeks. The enamel organic content was measured with thermogravimetry. The time-dependent viability of human dental pulp stem cells (HDPSCs) and gingival fibroblast cells (HGFCs) following either indirect exposure to 3 commercially available concentrations of CP gel using an in-vitro dentin perfusion assay or direct exposure to 5% H2O2 were investigated by evaluating change in cell morphology and by hemocytometry. The 5% and 16% CP produced a significantly lower (p < 0.001) enamel protein content (by weight) when compared to the control. The organic content in enamel varied accordingly to the CP treatment: for the 16% and 5% CP treatment groups, a variation of 4.0% and 5.4%, respectively, was observed with no significant difference. The cell viability of HDPSCs decreased exponentially over time for all groups. Within the limitation of this in-vitro study, we conclude that even low concentrations of H2O2 and CP result in a deleterious change in enamel protein content and compromise the viability of HGFCs and HDPSCs. These effects should be observed in-vivo.

Abstract
Evaluate the kinetics of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) degradation, esthetic efficacy and cytotoxicity of a bleaching gel with 35%H2 O2 applied on enamel previously covered or not with polymeric nanofibrillar scaffold (SNan), polymeric primer catalyst (PPol), and both. Standardized enamel/dentin discs (n = 128) obtained from bovine teeth were adapted to pulp chambers. After covering enamel with the polymeric products, the bleaching gel was applied for 45 min, establishing the following groups: G1: no treatment (negative control); G2: 35%H2 O2 (positive control); G3: SNan; G4: PPol; G5: SNan + PPol; G6: SNan + 35%H2 O2 ; G7: PPol + 35%H2 O2 ; G8: SNan + PPol + 35%H2 O2 . The kinetics of H2 O2 degradation (n = 8), bleaching efficacy (ΔE/ΔWI; n = 8), trans-amelodentinal cytotoxicity (n = 8), and cell morphology (n = 4) were assessed (ANOVA/Tukey test; p < 0.05). Greater H2 O2 degradation occurred in G7 and G8. Bleaching efficacy (ΔE) was higher in G6, G7, and G8 in comparison with G2 (p < 0.05). However, no difference was observed for ΔWI (p > 0.05). G8 presented the lower level of trans-amelodentinal diffusion of H2 O2 , oxidative stress, and toxicity to the MDPC-23 cells (p < 0.05). Polymeric biomaterials increased the kinetics of H2 O2 decomposition, as well as maintained the esthetic efficacy and minimized the cytotoxicity caused by a bleaching gel with 35%H2 O2 . CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Application of a bleaching gel with 35%H2 O2 on enamel previously covered by polymeric biomaterials maintains the esthetic efficacy and reduces the cytotoxicity caused by a single session of in-office dental bleaching.

Abstract
The role of bleaching agents (e.g., hydrogen peroxide) in tooth bleaching is quite well-described in a few literature studies and considered as the option choice for those desiring brighter teeth, but alternative methods have emerged to fulfill the desire of patients in a faster, easier, and cheaper way. In this context, whitening over-the-counter (OTC) products are available in several vehicles, such as toothpaste, rinses, gums, paint-on varnishes, and strips, but their effectiveness in terms of bleaching is questioned. This review aimed to describe their mode of action, whitening effectiveness, and harmful effects associated with the indiscriminate use of these products. Dentifrices usually present a combination of abrasives that can induce damage to the tooth surface without evidence of promoting real bleaching. The same was found for rinses, which might present a low pH, with an erosive potential. Charcoal has been included in the composition of these products to improve their whitening effect but there is no evidence supporting it. Regarding strips, they present hydrogen peroxide in a variety of concentrations and are the only OTC products able to promote bleaching. Despite the vehicle, an indication for the use of these products should be made after a careful individual diagnosis of the etiology of the dental staining, considering that most of them seem to be effective only in removing extrinsic stains or preventing their formation over enamel. Also, their indiscriminate use might induce damage and deleterious effects over tooth tissues or gingival tissues. The dentist should be aware of the composition and mode of action of each individual product as they change according to the composition and the vehicle used to recommend the best mode of usage. Still, there is no sound evidence that any of the described OTC products promote a better bleaching effect than the products indicated for a professional.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the effect of a novel radiofrequency (RF)‐utilizing toothbrush on reduction of stains and improvement of teeth shade. Materials and Methods This was an open label, prospective study, including six clinical visits that were conducted over a period of 8 weeks. Subjects performed twice daily brushing using a novel RF‐utilizing toothbrush, used manually with no mechanical vibration. Teeth shade and stains were assessed using Vita Easyshade advanced 4.0 device and a visual assessment of standardized digital photographs, before, and following 4 and 8 weeks of treatment. Results Twelve subjects completed the study with fully evaluable data. A notable shade improvement (whitening) was observed between the visits according to the average scores of teeth whitening index per subject. Statistical analysis conducted by the unstructured mix model confirmed a significant reduction in the average score of whitening index between baseline and visit 5 (p < 0.001) as well as between baseline and visit 6 (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found between the average teeth shade in visit 5 as compared to visit 6 (p = 0.918). No significant difference was found in teeth shade between females and males; however, subjects age was significantly correlated with teeth shade (p < 0.001). Digital photographs indicated a notable reduction in visible dark stains. The toothbrush was well tolerated and no device‐related adverse events were reported during the study. Conclusions The novel RF‐utilizing toothbrush produced significant benefits relating to teeth whitening and stains reduction, following one and 8 weeks of brushing.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a whitening toothpaste containing 3% carbamide peroxide and lactoperoxidase. Materials and methods. Participants were instructed to brush their teeth using an enzymatic-activated dentifrice following a particular procedure for three weeks. Color was recorded before and after treatment using a VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer. Differences in L∗ (tooth color lightness), a∗ (displacement along the red-green axis), and b∗ (displacement along the yellow-blue axis) were measured before and after treatment using the paired t and the Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Color changes (ΔE) were calculated using the obtained measurements. Results Thirty-four volunteers were included. ΔE was 4.03. For the set of 348 teeth, a greater tendency towards green (lower a∗) and blue (lower b∗) was observed (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in lightness after treatment. Mandibular central incisors showed a greater tendency towards green (lower a∗) and blue (lower b∗). Bleaching effectiveness was observed in both the upper and lower central incisors and in the lateral mandibular incisors. Conclusion Based on these results, it may be concluded that brushing with an enzymatic-activated dentifrice is effective for whitening teeth.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the pH of four bleaching agents based on high concentration hydrogen peroxide (30-35%) Whiteness HP Maxx (HPM), Lase Peroxide (LP), Whiteness HP Automixx (HPA) and Dash (DA) in different clinical periods (baseline, 15', 30' and 45'). Materials and methods 40 specimens (bovine teeth) were divided into 4 groups; one group for each bleaching agent. Each bleaching agent was prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions and was applied on the vestibular surface. The pH of the bleaching agent was measured with a digital pH meter at baseline, 15, 30 and 45 minutes. ANOVA, Friedman and Wilcoxon tests were applied. Results The pH values showed a trend to decreasing from the initial time of application to the final time, except for the DA group, which showed increasing pH values over time. The HPM group showed significant differences between baseline and the remaining periods. The LP group LP showed significant difference between 15' and the other periods. The HPA group showed significant differences between baseline and the remaining periods. Finally, the DA group, showed a significant difference between baseline and 45'. Conclusions The pH values of 3 of the bleaching agents decreased over time, with the exception of Dash which increased in the different time periods.

Abstract
Bleaching agents containing a high concentration of H2O2 in the dental market lead to formation of reactive oxygen species, which have genotoxic effects. However, ozone bleaching, one of the most effective oxidants known, stimulates blood circulation and immune response and thus it has strong antimicrobial activity against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. For these reasons, one of our hypothesis was ozone bleaching would reduce local and systemic DNA damage in the body. Hence, we aimed to determine the oxidative DNA damage biomarker levels in serum, saliva, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) by measuring 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) after different bleaching methods.Forty-eight volunteers who requested dental bleaching were divided into three treatment groups (n = 16). Group 1: ozone bleaching with the ozone-releasing machine; Group 2: chemical bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) gel; Group 3: 40% H2O2 gel activated with the diode laser. Initial and post-operative (immediately after bleaching and two weeks later) color measurements were performed with a spectrophotometer. The color changes were calculated with the CIEDE2000 (ΔE 00) formula. 8-OHdG levels in serum, saliva, and GCF samples were determined with ELISA. All three treatments resulted in efficient and statistically similar bleaching. The 8-OHdG levels in the serum and saliva were not affected by all bleaching methods (p > 0.05), but a temporary increase was observed in the GCF for chemical and laser-assisted groups except the ozone group (p > 0.05). According to the findings, chemical and laser-assisted bleaching can affect DNA damage locally but not systemically. Bleaching with ozone may eliminate this local DNA damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Tooth bleaching has become one of the most frequently requested esthetic procedures in dental practice. A side effect of bleaching is gingival irritation. This study examined the efficacy of propolis to treat gingival irritation caused by bleaching in vivo and in vitro. METHODS Gingival irritation was mimicked by a mild burn injury to oral mucosa in young (10 week old) and aged (18 month old) mice. Propolis ointment was immediately applied to the burn area. After 24 h, gingiva was collected to determine the efficacy of propolis by hematoxylin and eosin staining and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS Topical application of propolis ointment reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells at irritated sites and promoted the repair of the mucosal epithelium in young and aged mice. It also suppressed the expression of IL-1β and TNF-α and increased keratin 1 and 5 expression in the irritated gingiva. Propolis suppressed an increase in IL-1β and TNF-α upon stimulation with H2O2 in young and SA-β-gal-expressing senescent human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) cultures. CONCLUSIONS Propolis may be effective for mucosal repair in gingival irritation as it suppresses the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and promotes keratin expression.
