Patient Perception on Osteoporosis in Korean Female Patients with Osteoporosis

BACKGROUND

Patient perception is a key element in improving compliance with medications for osteoporosis. This study evaluated the awareness, perception, sources of information, and knowledge of osteoporosis among Korean women with osteoporosis.

METHODS

A questionnaire survey was conducted from July 22, 2021 to 13 August 2021. Patients who were followed up in endocrinology (Endo), orthopedic surgery (OS), and gynecology (GY) were recruited (N=40, 40, and 20 in each group). Patients were allocated according to their age, as follows: 15, 15, and 10 patients in their 60s, 70s, and 80s for Endo and OS, and 10 and 10 patients in their 60s and 70s for GY. The questionnaire was composed of the following topics: patient journey to the hospital, drug-related issues, communication with medical doctors, patient knowledge, and sources of information about osteoporosis.

RESULTS

The results of medical check-ups were the most common reason for patient visits to the hospital for an initial diagnosis of osteoporosis (61%). A knowledge gap regarding mortality, refracture, and drug-induced osteoporosis was observed. Doctors were the most preferred and trustful source of information, while health-related TV shows were the second most common source of information. Patients with OS reported lower perceived severity and higher drug discontinuation, along with a higher proportion of fractures, as the initial reasons for hospital visits for osteoporosis.

CONCLUSIONS

Variations in perceptions according to the issue and group were identified. These should be considered during patient consultations to improve compliance with osteoporosis treatment.

Perception and awareness of osteoporosis and its related risk factors among women: A cross-sectional study

<b>Objectives:</b> This study was designed to assess the awareness of women of the risk factors and preventive measures of osteoporosis.<br /> <b>Methods:</b> This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in Jordan. During the study period, a convenience sample of women were invited to participate via a survey link communicated through social media. Linear regression was used to screen independent variables affecting participants’ awareness of osteoporosis, its risk factors, and preventive measures.<br /> <b>Results:</b> 426 women agreed to participate in this study, with a median age of 38.5 years (IQR=16.0). Results showed that women have a median awareness score of 5.0 out of 9.0 (IQR=4.0) about osteoporosis risk factors, whereas women with higher educational levels (diploma or higher) and those with medical-related degrees have a higher awareness about osteoporosis risk factors compared to others (p≤0.05).<br /> Medical websites were the primary source used to obtain information about osteoporosis by the participating women (n=236, 55.4%). Also, results showed that more than 90% of the women believed that osteoporosis is a chronic silent disease that makes your bones less dense and more fragile (n=418, 98.1%), and that bone strength may increase by taking vitamin D and calcium (n=405, 95.0%).<br /> <b>Conclusion:</b> This study showed that women had an intermediate level of awareness of osteoporosis and prevention measures. The importance of medical websites and social media as sources of information was also demonstrated. More public targeted campaigns are needed to promote awareness of osteoporosis, its risk factors, prevention, and treatment.

OSTEOPOROSIS KNOWLEDGE, OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTING BEHAVİORS AND EATING HABITS AMONG HIGHLY EDUCATED YOUNG PREMENOPAUSAL TURKISH WOMEN

The purpose of this study was to determine osteoporosis knowledge, osteoporosis preventing behaviors and eating habits among highly educated young premenopausal women under the age of bone mineralization termination. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 189 academic and administrative staff of Erciyes University, aged 18-35 years. The knowledge level of osteoporosis was evaluated with the Turkish version of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT). Osteoporosis preventing behaviors and eating habits of participants were assessed. Despite the high educational level of women, they had poor levels of knowledge about osteoporosis. The mean total score for knowledge achieved by all women, out of a possible score of 24, was 14.08±3.69 or 58.6%. The mean nutrition subscale score was 9.63±3.07 and the exercise subscale score was 9.19±2.85. Assessing the Knowledge and Attitude towards Osteoporosis among Syrian Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Osteoporosis is a progressive decline in the bone mass, which occurs with no alterations to the bone's composition. It is associated with increased bone fragility that may eventually lead to fractures. In this study, we aim to assess the level of awareness that Syrian women possess regarding osteoporosis and spread the knowledge about its prevention measures.

METHODS

This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Syrian Private University. A validated questionnaire was asked to be filled in by women aged 18 and above, who were presented to clinics at Damascus, Al Helal, and Al Zahrawi hospitals between 28 November 2021 and 5 March 2022.

RESULTS

6082 women were included, of which 63.9% (n = 3884) were under 30 years old and 89.3% (n = 5429) were in their reproductive age. The average knowledge score of osteoporosis was 69.2 ± 7.7 (28-100); 88.1% correctly defined osteoporosis while the majority (93.4%) has heard of it. The majority of our participants were living in rural areas (77.2%; n = 4698) while only 22.8% (n = 1384) were living in urban areas. The respondents from urban areas reported the highest knowledge scores (OR = 1.472; 95% CI: 1.258-1.723; P < 0.0001). 75.60% agreed that aging is a risk factor for osteoporosis. 64.6% were aware that osteoporosis is directly responsible for hip fractures. Smoking, family history, lack of exercise, and menopause were the main risk factors for osteoporosis, at 53.6%, 53.1%, 84.6%, and 60.7%, respectively. Social media represented the ultimate source of information on osteoporosis (64.70%).

CONCLUSION

Our study is the largest in the region and the first of its kind in the country. Syrian women had an average knowledge score regarding osteoporosis; the vast majority has defined it correctly and has heard of it. We found no statistical significance between age or educational level and adequate knowledge about osteoporosis.

Knowledge and understanding risk factors and preventive measures for osteoporosis in women: results of a survey in 502 women with and without a migration background

BACKGROUND

Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system associated with loss of bone mass and an increased risk of fractures affecting women more often than men. Identification of the knowledge about osteoporosis and its preventive methods is the backbone of any awareness program. This study investigates the knowledge with a special focus on women with and without a migration background.

METHODS

Data from systematic patient interviews based on a questionnaire were collected at three different sites in Berlin between February and June 2021. The survey included questions assessing migrant background, demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits including physical exercise and smoking, prevention by vitamin D intake and bone densitometry, and information on personal and family medical history. According to the responses, a scale was created to assess the level of knowledge of preventive osteoporosis measures. The ethic committee of the Charité, Medical faculty has approved this study. SPSS (version 24.0) was used for the statistical analyses.

RESULTS

The survey of 502 female patients revealed that 25% had low and 34% no previous knowledge of osteoporosis. Older age and a better education level correlate with a higher knowledge. Patients with gynecologic cancer are less well informed. There is a significant difference in vitamin D intake between migrant and non-migrant women (57% vs. 49%). There were no significant differences regarding the use of bone densitometry.

CONCLUSION

Knowledge of osteoporosis and the possibility of a bone densitometry as well as the implementation of preventive measures is low among women. Therefore, informing patients better should be a priority, with particular attention on the risks and needs of women with a migration background. Specific programs for women with and without migration background should be developed to increase the awareness of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis: Prevalence, awareness and pertinent risk factors in a cohort of elderly Asian population presenting with low-energy distal radius fractures

BACKGROUND

This study aims to evaluate the awareness of osteoporosis and related risk factors in elderly Asian patients who present with distal radius fractures. The distal radius fracture is one of the most frequent fractures in the elderly cohort, owing to osteoporosis, and maybe a harbinger for further fractures, however, data is scarce regarding awareness of this condition among these patients.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients aged 45 and above that presented in the emergency department with low-energy distal radial fractures in Karachi from January-December 2018. Data were collected via a self-designed questionnaire, assessing the demographic information, knowledge about osteoporosis and its risk factors. The data was analysed using SPSS 20 for statistical significance.

RESULTS

From a total of 550 patients with a mean age of 70.5 ± 32.82 years, there were 442 (80.36%) females and 108 (19.63%) males. On educational consideration, 243 (44.18%) patients could not read or write and only 110 (20%) of the patients received secondary school education. Only 123 (22.36%) were well informed about osteoporosis, the predominant source of information being their physician. There were 427 (77.63%) patients who were unaware of osteoporosis, 16% of which were smokers, 26% indicated they exercised at least 30 minutes daily, and 2% reported drinking alcohol occasionally. On dietary supplements, 24.27% of patients reported calcium and 17.81% reported vitamin D supplement consumption on regular basis.

CONCLUSION

We found a positive correlation between a patient's education status and osteoporosis awareness We believe that the role of the physician could be crucial in preventing further fractures in such patients via physician lead educational campaigns to target modifiable risk factors.

To study the awareness of osteoporosis in postmenopausal Indian women in a Northeast part of India: An evaluation of the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale

Aim and Objective:

Our study's objective is to determine the level of awareness in postmenopausal women in Guwahati, Northeast part of India, using the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS).

Settings and Design:

Osteoporosis is the most common silent health problem in postmenopausal Indian women. An awareness level among this subset of women needs to study. The present study is based on a self-explanatory questionnaire.

Methods:

We conducted a self-explanatory questionnaire study on 2000 postmenopausal women in Guwahati, North East region of India. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using calcaneum Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) to assess BMD. Baseline characteristics were noted and analyzed.

Results:

The awareness level was noted only in757 (37.85%). Women with education level 12^th standard and above have some awareness regarding osteoporosis.

Conclusions:

Based on the present study, we can conclude that there is a lack of awareness in postmenopausal women regarding osteoporosis in India's North-East region. This subset of women is unaware of the condition that can leads to fragility fracture if not address in time. The study emphasizes that health care professionals should conduct frequent awareness programs in the community to prevent this silent disease, and morbidities so arise from osteoporosis can be minimized.

Assessment of osteoporosis knowledge among adult Saudi females attending the family medicine department at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Background

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by loss of bone mineral density, deterioration of bone structure, bone fragility, and it is associated with high risk of fractures. The prevalence of osteoporosis among Saudis is estimated to be 34% in females and 30.7% in males. The aim of this study was to know the level of knowledge about osteoporosis among Saudi females at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Materials and Methods

This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study conducted between January 2019 and January 2020. We used the osteoporosis knowledge assessment tool (OKAT) for data collection. The survey assessed the understanding of symptoms and fracture risk, risk factors, treatment availability and preventive factors for osteoporosis.

Results

The overall knowledge of our 376 participants was good with a mean score of (66%). Participants had more knowledge about the symptoms and fracture risk and the preventive factors such as physical activity and diet compared to the other subscales of the OKAT. There was a significant difference between the knowledge of younger and older females (>40 yrs.), where younger females had lower scores on the OKAT.

Conclusion

This study showed that knowledge about osteoporosis was good among females attending the family medicine clinics in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, younger females were less knowledgeable, which means that more effort should be made to increase the awareness about osteoporosis especially among the younger females.

Knowledge and Beliefs on Osteoporosis among African Postmenopausal Women in a Kenyan Semi-Rural County of Kiambu

BACKGROUND

Assessing people's knowledge and beliefs about osteoporosis is fundamental to the formulation of preventive strategies for this condition. To our knowledge, no randomized community survey has been conducted using Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz (FOOQ) and Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS) exclusively in the postmenopausal women in Kenya. This study aimed to assess postmenopausal women&apos;s knowledge and beliefs concerning osteoporosis in semirural Kiambu County, Kenya.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study involving face-to-face interviews with 254 African postmenopausal women was conducted between October 2017 and February 2018. The questionnaire explored the socio-demographic characteristics; FOOQ was used to evaluate the knowledge these women had about osteoporosis, while OHBS was used to assess their beliefs.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 64.6±10.7 years. About 26.4% (67/254) of the participants had no formal education, while 3.1% (8/254) were in formal employment. About 54.3% (138/254) of the women were married, and 51.2% (130/254) were in the lowest and lower wealth quintile. FOOQ had a mean score of 8.6 (standard deviation±1.8; range, 0-17). OHBS revealed a low level of perceived susceptibility to osteoporosis. Perceived benefits of exercising and calcium intake as well as perceived seriousness of osteoporosis as a disease were at moderate levels. The level of health motivation was also moderate.

CONCLUSIONS

The women in this study demonstrated limited knowledge about osteoporosis. The low susceptibility score makes the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in this population challenging. We recommend public health education for all postmenopausal women in this setting.

Construction and validation of the Lebanese Osteoporosis Knowledge Scale among a representative sample of Lebanese women

Our study aimed at constructing and validating the Lebanese Osteoporosis Knowledge Scale adapted for use among Lebanese women and to assess factors associated with the poorest knowledge of osteoporosis definition, risk factors, and preventive measures. This scale showed adequate psychometric properties; higher knowledge scores were reached in women who already heard about the disease and had a formal education. As a result, the LOKS-19 can be used to measure knowledge of osteoporosis and help assess osteoporosis-related interventions.

INTRODUCTION

The primary objective of this study was to describe the construction of the Lebanese Osteoporosis Knowledge Scale (LOKS) and assess its psychometric properties in a representative sample of Lebanese women aged 40 years and above. Secondary objectives were to explore factors associated with this knowledge score.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study carried out between March and June 2018, enrolled 560 women over the age of 40 years living in the community. This proportionate sample was randomly selected from all Lebanese governorates to cover the entire Lebanese area. A survey was developed and adapted to the Lebanese population based on preexisting scales. Personal interviews were conducted to collect data.

RESULTS

The items of the LOKS were distributed across seven factors with an Eigenvalue over 1 solution, outlining an overall value of 55.89% of the variance. A high Cronbach's alpha was found for the full scale (0.725). Individuals having a university level of education (beta = 1.62; compared to illiteracy), having heard of osteoporosis (beta = 2.62), taking supplements of calcium and vitamin D compared to none (beta = 0.77), and having had Crohn's disease (beta = 1.71) had significantly higher knowledge scores of osteoporosis; oppositely, having diabetes (beta = - 1.17), currently taking chemotherapy (beta = - 2.25), and ever having had a fracture (beta = - 0.74) were significantly correlated with lower awareness of osteoporosis.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that the LOKS-19 can be used to measure knowledge of osteoporosis and help assess osteoporosis-related interventions. A better knowledge seems to be associated with more preventive measures and less risk of fracture.

Osteoporosis awareness and health beliefs among Lebanese women aged 40 years and above

Higher knowledge scores were reached in women who already heard about the disease and had a formal education. As a result, osteoporosis awareness campaigns and educational programs are mostly needed in populations with lower educational levels.

Our study investigated the characteristics of Lebanese women population groups with the poorest knowledge of osteoporosis definition, risk factors, and preventive measures.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study, conducted between March and June 2018, enrolled 560 community dwelling women aged 40 years and above. A questionnaire was used to collect data. A proportionate random sample from all Lebanese Mohafazat was used. Data collection was performed through personal interviews. The median was used as a cutoff point for both the Knowledge and Health Belief scales.

RESULTS

The study results showed that 47.3% of participants had a poor knowledge score. Women who received no education, compared to a higher education and have not previously heard about the disease, had lower knowledge scores. In addition, women not taking calcium and vitamin D supplements and not exercising or exercising less than 20 min per day compared to those having these characteristics had lower osteoporosis knowledge levels. A lower knowledge score was associated with less recognized benefits of adequate calcium intake and regular physical activity, more perceived barriers towards their practice, and a less important health motivation. A lower level of education correlated to the same results.

CONCLUSION

Lower knowledge scores were reached in women who have never heard of osteoporosis and had a lower level of education. As a result, osteoporosis awareness campaigns and educational programs need to target population categories with lower educational levels.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of Osteoporosis Knowledge Tool-Arabic Version Among Iraqi Population

Background:

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem as the majority of people are not aware of the disease until the complications occur.

Objective:

The aims of this study were to validate Osteoporosis Knowledge Tool (OKT-A) Arabic version and to assess the osteoporosis knowledge among Iraqi general population.

Methods:

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the city of Baghdad with a random cluster sampling method from the community. Forward–backward-forward translation method was used to translate the OKT questionnaire from English into Arabic language. The psychometric assessment process includes: face validity, reliability (Cronbach’s alpha and test-retest), item difficulty index, point biserial correlation and discriminatory power.

Results:

The results showed good face validity. The Cronbach’s alpha and Pearson correlation coefficient of the test re-test reliability were 0.775 and 0.412, respectively. Item difficulty index, point biserial correlation ranges and discriminatory power were 0.105 to 0.852, 0.105 to 0.445 and 0.933, respectively. These results demonstrated that OKT-A was a reliable and stable tool. The results showed low OKT-A scores 11.50±3.958. Furthermore, the OKT-A scores and its subscales were less than 50%. In addition, there were significant differences between the following independent variables in relation to total OKT-A scores: educational level, do you have osteoporosis or ever heard about osteoporosis. Moreover, there was a significant association between ever heard about osteoporosis groups and the OKT-A knowledge levels.

Conclusion:

This study showed good validity and reliability of OKT-A tool among Arabic general population. In addition, the results showed an urgent need for implementing an educational programme and should be a public health practice to increase the knowledge toward osteoporosis and its related risk factor.

Low knowledge of osteoporosis and its risk factors in urban Indian adults from Pune city, India

OBJECTIVE

To assess knowledge of osteoporosis and its risk factors and to explore associations between knowledge and various sociodemographic factors in Indian adults.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study. The Revised Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT) was used to assess knowledge of osteoporosis. Four scores (OKT-total, range 0-32; OKT-exercise, range 0-20; OKT-nutrition, range 0-26; OKT-risk factors, range 0-14) were generated by giving 1 point to every correct answer and 0 points for incorrect or 'not known' answers.

SETTING

Tertiary-care hospital in Pune city, India.ParticipantsAdults aged 40-75 years (n 477; 234 males) enrolled through voluntary routine health checks and health camps.

RESULTS

Mean age of the study population was 54·6 (sd 9·5) years. Half the participants were aware of osteoporosis and could correctly define it. Women showed significantly higher median OKT-total and OKT-nutrition scores than men (P0·1).

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding about osteoporosis and its risk factors is low in the present cohort of Indian men and women. There is need to create awareness programmes aimed at both men and women especially targeting those with lower education, lower socio-economic status and no previous exposure to osteoporosis.

The Relationship of Knowledge of Osteoporosis and Bone Health in Postmenopausal Women in Silesia Osteo Active Study

The Silesia Osteo Active Study was designed to assess osteoporosis-related knowledge and its relationships with skeletal status in an epidemiological population-based program. Participants were chosen randomly from postmenopausal women over 55 yr. The study group consisted of 388 patients (mean age 65 ± 7). All participants fulfilled medical and socioeconomic questionnaires and test concerning osteoporosis-related knowledge. They underwent proximal femur and lumbar spine densitometry. The mean level of osteoporosis knowledge was 7.3 ± 2.0 for 10 questions. Osteoporosis knowledge seems to have no influence on densitometry results in the population; nevertheless it improves femoral neck (FN) density in those without prior personal experience of osteoporosis (r = 0.15; p < 0.05). Higher knowledge of osteoporosis was connected with osteoporosis in family, hormone replacement therapy or smoking history, and higher educational degree. The level of knowledge was significantly better in younger than in older participants (7.4 vs 6.7; p < 0.01). Osteoporosis (T-score < -2.5) was established in 6.4%, 2%, and 33% for FN, total hip, and spine, respectively. As a conclusion, current study revealed a positive influence of the knowledge of osteoporosis on FN density in postmenopausal women without prior personal experience of the disease.

Expressed information needs of patients with osteoporosis and/or fragility fractures: a systematic review

This systematic review identified patients have unmet information needs about the nature of osteoporosis, medication, self-management and follow-up. Clinician knowledge and attitudes appear to be of key importance in determining whether these needs are met. Unmet information needs appear to have psychosocial consequences and result in poor treatment adherence.

PURPOSE

Patient education is an integral component of the management of osteoporosis, yet patients are dissatisfied with the information they receive and see this as an area of research priority. This study aimed to describe and summarise the specific expressed information needs of patients in previously published qualitative research.

METHODS

Using terms relating to osteoporosis, fragility fracture and information needs, seven databases were searched. Articles were screened using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Full-text articles selected for inclusion underwent data extraction and quality appraisal. Findings were drawn together using narrative synthesis.

RESULTS

The search identified 11,024 articles. Sixteen empirical studies were included in the review. Thematic analysis revealed three overarching themes relating to specific information needs, factors influencing whether information needs are met and the impact of unmet information needs. Specific information needs identified included the following: the nature of osteoporosis/fracture risk; medication; self-management and understanding the role of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and follow-up. Perceived physician knowledge and attitudes, and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of patients were important factors in influencing whether information needs were met, in addition to contextual factors and the format of educational resources. Failure to elicit and address information needs appears to be associated with poor treatment adherence, deterioration of the doctor-patient relationship and important psychosocial consequences.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to describe the information needs of patients with osteoporosis and fracture, the impact of this information gap and possible solutions. Further research is needed to co-design and evaluate educational interventions with patients.

Awareness of osteoporosis in a polytechnic in Enugu, South East Nigeria

This study aims to determine the awareness of osteoporosis and factors that determine awareness of osteoporosis. Results showed that osteoporosis awareness was associated with age (p = 0.006) and occupation (p < 0.001) but not gender, marital status, and level of education. There is therefore need for educational interventions to improve awareness of osteoporosis.

INTRODUCTION

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bone becomes porous, brittle, and more susceptible to fracture. It is the most common metabolic bone disease worldwide. Increased prevalence of disease is attributed to low awareness of disease among general population referred to as a 'silent disease.' There is paucity of evidence of osteoporosis awareness in Africa while level of knowledge in Nigeria is also minimal.

METHODS

The study was carried out in a Polytechnic in Enugu, South East Nigeria, as one of the phases of ongoing awareness exercise on osteoporosis. Study design was descriptive cross-sectional study using stratified random sampling method for selection. The study made use of a structured, self-administered questionnaire using English language. Statistical analyses were carried out with SPSS version 22 software, using Chi square and Fischer exact tests of significance and alpha level set at p = 0.05.

RESULTS

Out of a total number of 500 respondents, 187 (37.4%) had heard about osteoporosis, however, only 34 (18.2%) of those who have heard about osteoporosis knew the correct meaning of osteoporosis. Overall, only 34 (6.8%) out of 500 knew the correct meaning of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis awareness was highest among age group ≥51 years (33.3%) and least in age group ≤20 years (6.3%) (p = 0.006). Awareness was also highest among civil servants (17.9%) and least among unemployed respondents (0.0%) (p < 0.001). There was no gender preponderance in awareness level while marital status and level of education were not significantly associated with level of awareness.

CONCLUSION

While there was low knowledge of osteoporosis in the study area, awareness of osteoporosis was associated with age and occupation but not gender, marital status, or level of education. There is need for educational interventions to improve awareness of osteoporosis.

Men's knowledge about osteoporosis and its risk factors

INTRODUCTION

Until recently osteoporosis was seen mainly as a woman's problem. However, in the last ten years there has been rising awareness in society that osteoporosis constitutes an inseparable element of getting old for men as well. The aim of the research was to evaluate men's knowledge about osteoporosis and its risk factors contributing to the development of the disease.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included 205 men aged 20-60. The examined men were patients of selected healthcare centres in Lublin Voivodeship. The study was conducted between September 2014 and April 2015. The research was performed by means of the survey method, using a poll technique. Purposive sampling and an original questionnaire were used. Gathered material was subjected to descriptive and statistical analysis. The Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were applied. The statistical significance level was set at α = 0.05. IBM SPSS Statistics software was used to perform the statistical analysis.

RESULTS

The respondents' level of knowledge about osteoporosis and its risk factors can be estimated as average. The polled men showed better knowledge on osteoporosis risk factors (M = 59.78) than general osteoporosis knowledge (M = 53.71). Significant differences were found between the respondents' education and their general osteoporosis knowledge as well as between the respondents' living conditions and their knowledge about osteoporosis risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Because of the insufficient level of knowledge about osteoporosis and its risk factors in the male population it is advisable to launch prevention programmes aimed at men focusing on this issue.

Awareness of osteoporosis in postmenopausal Indian women: An evaluation of Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale

Context:

The level of awareness about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are the common sufferers.

Aims:

This study aims to evaluate the level of awareness in postmenopausal women using the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS).

Settings and Design:

Osteoporosis has emerged as a common health problem in geriatric population. A proactive role needs to be played for preventing its consequences. Before initiating any preventive measures, an evaluation of awareness level of the target population is necessary. The questionnaire-based study design was used for this study.

Subjects and Methods:

A questionnaire (OHBS)-based study in 100 postmenopausal women in Chandigarh was conducted. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in each case by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of the participants were noted.

Statistical Analysis Used:

Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate any correlation between the various components of the OHBS and the BMD.

Results:

No statistically significant difference was noted in the seven component parameters of OHBS among the normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic women suggesting that the health belief regarding susceptibility is not much different between the three groups of the study population. A statistically significant difference between the mean BMI of normal and osteoporotic population was noted.

Conclusions:

The results show that there is a great deficit in the awareness level of postmenopausal Indian women regarding osteoporosis. Most of the women were unaware of the condition and the means to prevent it. The study emphasizes that health care professionals have lot of ground to cover to decrease the incidence of osteoporosis and its associated health problem.

The Development and Validation of the Osteoporosis Prevention and Awareness Tool (OPAAT) in Malaysia

OBJECTIVES

To develop and validate Osteoporosis Prevention and Awareness Tool (OPAAT) in Malaysia.

METHODS

The OPAAT was modified from the Malaysian Osteoporosis Knowledge Tool and developed from an exploratory study on patients. Face and content validity was established by an expert panel. The OPAAT consists of 30 items, categorized into three domains. A higher score indicates higher knowledge level. English speaking non-osteoporotic postmenopausal women ≥ 50 years of age and pharmacists were included in the study.

RESULTS

A total of 203 patients and 31 pharmacists were recruited. Factor analysis extracted three domains. Flesch reading ease was 59.2. The mean ± SD accuracy rate was 0.60 ± 0.22 (range: 0.26-0.94). The Cronbach's α for each domain ranged from 0.286-0.748. All items were highly correlated (Spearman's rho: 0.761-0.990, p < 0.05), with no significant change in the overall test-retest scores, indicating that OPAAT has achieved stable reliability. Pharmacists had higher knowledge score than patients (80.9 ± 8.7 vs 63.6 ± 17.4, p < 0.001), indicating that the OPAAT was able to discriminate between the knowledge levels of pharmacists and patients.

CONCLUSION

The OPAAT was found to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing patient's knowledge about osteoporosis and its prevention in Malaysia. The OPAAT can be used to identify individuals in need of osteoporosis educational intervention.

Chosen risk factors for osteoporosis and the level of knowledge about the disease in peri- and postmenopausal women

Introduction

Osteoporosis as a chronic disease, affecting especially women in postmenopausal age, is an important, social and economic health problem especially of women of today's world. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of women in the peri- and postmenopausal period about the prevention of osteoporosis and show the influence of chosen risk factors on the level of this knowledge.

Material and methods

A group of 300 women aged 45-65, being patients of healthcare centres in Chełm, Lublin and Zamość (Lublin voivodeship, south-eastern Poland) were included in the study. The purposive sampling was used. Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT) 2011 was the research tool. Gathered material was subjected to descriptive and statistical analysis. Tukey's test, t-student test and variance analysis (ANOVA) were all applied. An accepted p materiality level was < 0.05 and p < 0.01.

Results

Respondents presented the average level of knowledge about the role of physical activity in the prevention of osteoporosis (M = 13.93) and a low level of knowledge about well-balanced diet rich in calcium (M = 9.77). The knowledge about risk factors, screening and treatment remained on the average level (M = 8.00). An influence of socio-demographic factors on the level of knowledge was shown. Also some behaviours, associated with the lifestyle indeed influenced the level of this knowledge.

Conclusions

Professional educational programs on osteoporosis should be implemented in the population of Polish peri- and postmenopausal women.

Inter-correlation of knowledge, attitude, and osteoporosis preventive behaviors in women around the age of peak bone mass

BACKGROUND

As silent and preventable in nature, postmenopausal osteoporosis awareness should be raised among young women prior to an irreversible period of declining bone mass. We therefore decided to assess the inter-correlation of knowledge, attitude and osteoporosis preventive behaviors in women around the age of peak bone mass.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 430 women aged 20-35 years. The participants' knowledge, attitude and behaviors concerning osteoporosis prevention were assessed along with demographic data using a four-part questionnaire. The items in this questionnaire were established by extensive literature review, including the Guideline for Management of Osteoporosis of the Thai Osteoporosis Foundation (TOPF) 2010. The content was validated by experts in osteoporosis and reliability was obtained with a Cronbach's alpha score of 0.83.

RESULTS

The mean age of women in this study was 29.4 ± 4.6 years. Half of the participants (49.5%) had heard about osteoporosis, mostly from television (95.3%, n = 203/213) and the internet (72.8%, n = 155/213). Most women had certain knowledge (85.2%) and positive attitude towards osteoporosis (53.3%). Nevertheless, 80% of the studied population did not have appropriate osteoporosis behaviors. We found significant correlation between the level of attitudes and osteoporosis behaviors (adjusted odd ratio = 3.3 with 95% confidence interval of 1.9-5.7); attitude and educational level (adjusted odd ratio = 2.2 with 95% confidence interval of 1.4-3.4); and attitude and knowledge (adjusted odd ratio = 3.5 with 95% confidence interval of 1.8-6.8).

CONCLUSION

Despite having certain knowledge about osteoporosis, the young women did not seem to have appropriate osteoporosis preventive behaviors. Developing a right attitude towards osteoporosis may be a key determinant to improving health practices in order to prevent osteoporosis.

Awareness of osteoporosis and its relationship with calcaneus quantitative ultrasound in a large Chinese community population

Background

The People’s Republic of China has the largest population affected by osteoporosis in the world. However, no population-based survey of osteoporosis awareness in People’s Republic of China has been reported. This study investigated the level of basic awareness of osteoporosis in a large community in People’s Republic of China. The relationship between level of awareness and quantitative ultrasound (US) measurements at the calcaneus was also assessed.

Methods

A questionnaire was completed by 9983 men and women aged 40 years or older in Nanjing, People’s Republic of China, between June and December 2011. During this time, the study participants underwent quantitative US measurement. Data from 9049 of the subjects were included in the final analysis.

Results

The proportion of subjects who were aware of osteoporosis was very low. Only 30.7% had heard of osteoporosis, and only 18.5% had heard of osteoporotic fracture. In total, 52.9% of the subjects drank milk, 16.0% took calcium, 7.1% took vitamin D, and 47.2% were performing regular physical activity. Logistic regression showed that more highly educated older women had significantly better awareness of osteoporosis (P < 0.05). Subjects with a history of a previous osteoporotic fracture also had better awareness (P < 0.05) than subjects without such a history, except for those who drank milk. Similar to previous reports, female sex, old age, a low education level, and a personal history of osteoporotic fracture were significantly associated with a low quantitative US measurement (P < 0.001). Further, drinking milk and having not heard of osteoporosis were significantly associated with a higher quantitative US measurement (P < 0.05), while other indicators of osteoporosis awareness were not associated with quantitative US values (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Awareness of osteoporosis in People’s Republic of China is very low. National awareness strategies should be implemented, especially for poorly educated young men.

Osteoporosis among older Saudis: risk of fractures and unmet needs

Using FRAX®, this study aimed at estimating 10-years probability of osteoporosis (OP)-related fractures and identifies those in need of OP treatment among primary care attendees in Saudi Arabia. Of those aged ≥ 60 years, 14.4 and 18.4 % scored probabilities for major and hip fractures respectively suggesting OP treatment. Predictors for receiving OP screening included the presence of multiple clinical risk factors, occurrence of fragility fractures and physicians recommendation.

PURPOSE

This study aimed at estimating the 10-years probability of osteoporosis (OP)-related fractures and identifying those in need of OP treatment among Saudi adults attending primary care centers (PHCs) in Al Hassa, Saudi Arabia, using FRAX® calculator and to determine factors possibly influence receiving of OP screening among them.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

A total of 1,251 Saudi aged ≥ 40 years, of both genders, were recruited from four urban and three rural randomly selected PHCs. All were subjected to anthropometric measurements followed by a personal interview with structured questionnaire to asses OP clinical risk factors (CRFs) and possible correlates for receiving OP screening. Ten-year probabilities for major osteoporotic and hip fractures were calculated using the Lebanese version of FRAX® calculator.

RESULTS

Of participants aged ≥ 60 years, 14.4 and 18.4 % were identified with probability scores for major osteoporotic and hip fractures respectively, suggesting OP treatment. Out of sampled population, 16.1 % received OP screening. The presence of ≥two OP CRFs (odds ratio OR = 4.45), being aware of OP (OR = 2.89), physician recommendation of OP screening (OR = 2.01), and history of fragility fracture (OR = 1.92) were all possible positive predictors for receiving OP screening.

CONCLUSION

A sizable portion of the sampled older Saudis especially those aged ≥ 60 years are at high risk for OP-related fractures indicative to receive OP treatment. Occurrence of fragility fractures, multiplicity of CRFs and physician's recommendations are significant positive predictors to receive OP screening among them.

Prevalence, awareness, and treatment of osteoporosis among Korean women: The Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

PURPOSE

This study aimed to assess the factors associated with the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of osteoporosis in a representative sample of Korean women.

METHODS

Data were obtained from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurement of the lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck, and from a standardized questionnaire in 2870 Korean women aged 50years and older who participated in the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2009. Osteoporosis was defined by World Health Organization T-score criteria, and awareness and treatment were defined by self-report of an osteoporosis diagnosis and self-report of current anti-osteoporotic medication use, respectively. We assessed the relationship between multiple risk factors and prevalence, awareness, and treatment.

RESULTS

Osteoporosis was reported in 39.1% of Korean women. Among those with osteoporosis, only 37.5% were aware of their diagnosis and 23.5% received pharmacological treatment. Despite higher prevalence among respondents who were older, of lower body weight, calcium intake, physical activity, and education levels, the awareness and treatment rates of these groups were similar or lower than that of the low-risk controls in multivariate logistic regression models. Moreover, easily identifiable risk factors (e.g., history of fracture, falls, height loss, familial osteoporosis) were not associated with awareness and treatment. Participants who had undergone health screening in the previous 2years exhibited increased awareness and treatment rates independently of other demographic factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Osteoporosis was highly prevalent in this Korean study but was underdiagnosed and undertreated. Routine health screenings could be an effective strategy to increase osteoporosis awareness and treatment.

Knowledge about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women undergoing antiresorptive treatment

A good understanding and knowledge of osteoporosis is a prerequisite for the success of preventive measures as well as treatment adherence.

OBJECTIVE

To assess knowledge about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or osteopenia undergoing antiresorptive treatment.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was based on a sample of 232 postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis diagnosed by bone density studies and seen at the Menopause Outpatient Clinic at Caism/Unicamp. Women's knowledge of osteoporosis was assessed by means of the OPQ (Osteoporosis questionnaire), a 20-item questionnaire about osteoporosis in areas of general information, risk factors, consequences and treatment.

RESULTS

The average age of the women was 61.6 years (±8.2 years) and the average time since menopause was 16.8 years. The average knowledge score obtained by the OPQ was 3.78. The average score for correct answers was 9.8 points, while the average score for incorrect answers was 6 points and 'don't know' answers was 4.1 points. Bivariate analysis showed the variables most closely associated with greater knowledge: education (p<0.01), reading (p<0.02), socioeconomic status (p<0.03), means of acquiring osteoporosis medication (p<0.02), and absence of comorbidities (p<0.04). On multiple regression analysis, the factors which remained associated with better knowledge were higher education, higher socioeconomic status scores and absence of comorbidities.

CONCLUSION

Knowledge of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women diagnosed with the disease was limited. Level of education was a strong predictor of knowledge.

A Study on the Level of Awareness and Self-Efficacy of Osteoporosis in Young Women

PURPOSE

This study was done to determine the level of awareness and self-efficacy and their relationships to osteoporosis among young women.

METHODS

The participants were 309 young women living in Seoul. The data were collected using questionnaires from July to September 2009. The Osteoporosis Awareness Scale consists of five areas with a total of 31 questions and the Self-efficacy Scale consists of 18 questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson's correlation coefficients.

RESULTS

The average level for osteoporosis awareness was 2.22, of a possible 4.00 and significant difference were related to participants' previous encounter with any information about osteoporosis, behavior to prevent osteoporosis, experience of weight control, and frequency of vegetable and calcium-rich foods intake. The average level of self-efficacy for osteoporosis was 2.81, of a possible 4.00 and significant difference related to participants' educational level, occupation, behavior to prevent osteoporosis, smoking, method of weight control, regular exercise, and frequency of vegetable and calcium-rich foods intake. There were significant positive correlations among awareness and self-efficacy about osteoporosis.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that health care professionals need to provide effective interventions for young women to enhance their osteoporosis awareness and self-efficacy for preventing osteoporosis.
