Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of cyanobacterial metabolites: microcystin-LR (MC-LR) anabaenopeptin-A (ANA-A), cylindrospermopsin (CYL), their binary and ternary mixtures on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) gill (RTgill-W1) cell line. We determined the following cell parameters: Hoechst and propidium iodide (PI) double staining, intracellular ATP level with luminometric assay, glutathione level with ThiolTracker Violet®- glutathione detection reagent and cytoskeletal F-actin fluorescence. The results showed that although reduction of Hoechst fluorescence was observed in both binary and ternary combinations of cyanobacterial metabolites, the mixture of MC-LR + ANA-A + CYL was the most potent inhibitor (EC50 = 148 nM). PI fluorescence and ATP levels were more increased in the cells exposed to the mixtures than those exposed to the individual metabolites with synergistic toxic changes suggesting apoptosis as the mechanism of cell death. Reduced glutathione level was also decreased in cells exposed both to single metabolites and their mixtures with the highest decrease and synergistic effects at 334 nM MC-LR+334 nM ANA-A+ 334 nM CYL suggesting induction oxidative stress by the tested compounds. Reduction of F-actin fluorescence was found in the cells from all of the groups exposed to individual metabolites and their mixtures, however the highest level of inhibition showed the binary MC-LR + CYL and the ternary MC-LR + ANA-A + CYL with synergistic interactions. The study suggests that in natural conditions fish gill cells may be very sensitive to individual cyanobacterial metabolites and more prone to their binary and ternary mixtures.

Abstract
The intricate nature of cyanotoxin exposure through food reveals a complex web of risks and uncertainties in our dietary choices. With the aim of starting to unravel this intricate nexus, a comprehensive review of 111 papers from the past two decades investigating cyanotoxin contamination in food was undertaken. It revealed a widespread occurrence of cyanotoxins in diverse food sources across 31 countries. Notably, 68% of the studies reported microcystin concentrations exceeding established Tolerable Daily Intake levels. Cyanotoxins were detected in muscles of many fish species, and while herbivorous fish exhibited the highest recorded concentration, omnivorous species displayed a higher propensity for cyanotoxin accumulation, exemplified by Oreochromis niloticus. Beyond fish, crustaceans and bivalves emerged as potent cyanotoxin accumulators. Gaps persist regarding contamination of terrestrial and exotic animals and their products, necessitating further exploration. Plant contamination under natural conditions remains underreported, yet evidence underscores irrigation-driven cyanotoxin accumulation, particularly affecting leafy vegetables. Finally, cyanobacterial-based food supplements often harbored cyanotoxins (57 % of samples were positive) warranting heightened scrutiny, especially for Aphanizomenon flos-aquae-based products. Uncertainties surround precise concentrations due to methodological variations (chemical and biochemical) and extraction limitations, along with the enigmatic fate of toxins during storage, processing, and digestion. Nonetheless, potential health consequences of cyanotoxin exposure via contaminated food include gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, organ damage (e.g. liver, kidneys, muscles), and even elevated cancer risks. While microcystins received significant attention, knowledge gaps persist regarding other cyanotoxins' accumulation, exposure, and effects, as well as combined exposure via multiple pathways. Intriguing and complex, cyanotoxin exposure through food beckons further research for our safer and healthier diets.

Abstract
Cyanophages are highly abundant specific viruses that infect cyanobacterial cells. In recent years, the cyanophages and cyanobacteria interactions drew attention to environmental restoration due to their discovery in marine and freshwater systems. Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) are increasing throughout the world and contaminating aquatic ecosystems. The blooms cause severe environmental problems including unpleasant odors and cyanotoxin production. Cyanotoxins have been reported to be lethal agents for living beings and can harm animals, people, aquatic species, recreational activities, and drinking water reservoirs. Biological remediation of cyanoHABs in aquatic systems is a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to increasing surface water quality. Therefore, this study compiles the fragmented information with the solution of removal of cyanoHABs using cyanophage therapy techniques. To date, scant information exists in terms of bloom formation, cyanophage occurrence, and mode of action to remediate cyanoHABs. Overall, this study illustrates cyanobacterial toxin production and its impacts on the environment, the mechanisms involved in the cyanophage-cyanobacteria interaction, and the application of cyanophages for the removal of toxic cyanobacterial blooms.

Abstract
The cyanobacteria-associated microbiome is constantly reshaped by bloom development. However, the synergistic-antagonistic nature of the relationships between Microcystis and its microbiome still remains unclear. Therefore, temporal changes of bacterioplankton communities and their functional potential through different developing stages of a Microcystis toxigenic bloom were investigated, considering bacterioplankton assemblages as particle-attached (PAB) and free-living (FLB) bacteria. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that PAB were represented by Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria, while FLB by Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Network and ordination analyses indicated that PAB inter-relationships were more complex-numerous connections between taxa with stronger correlations, than FLB-rather influenced by physico-chemical parameters. PAB in pre-summer was diverse with Proteobacteria containing potential taxa involved in nitrogen-transforming processes. In mid-summer, PAB presented a mix-bloom dominated by Snowella, Aphanizomenon, and Microcystis, which were succeeded by toxigenic Microcystis in post-summer. Both periods were associated to potential taxa with parasitic/predatory lifestyles against cyanobacteria. In post-summer, Sutterellaceae were recognized as poor water quality indicators, and their strong association with Microcystis could have represented an increased threat for that period. Microcystis was a major factor significantly reducing PAB diversity and evenness, suggesting that it negatively influenced bacterioplankton assemblages, probably also altering the overall community functional potential.

Abstract
Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) pose a risk to exposed aquatic and terrestrial species. Numerous studies have addressed effects of single toxins while much less attention has been devoted to mixtures of cHAB metabolites that are continually released by living cyanobacteria. Neuro-impairment associated with cHABs has been reported in fish, though the mechanism remains unclear. Here we exposed embryos of Sinocyclocheilus grahami, an endangered fish, to Microcystis aeruginosa exudates (MaE) to evaluate neurotoxicity and the toxicity mechanism(s). We found that MaE affected embryonic development by increasing malformation and mortality rates and decreasing the fertilization rate. MaE also inhibited fish neurobehavior including touch response, social frequency, swimming distance, and aggravated light-stimulation response. Neurobehavior suppression resulted from a decrease in excitatory neurotransmitters acetylcholine and dopamine, even though receptors increased. MaE also affected gene and protein expression of neurotransmitters, synthetic and/or degrading enzymes, and receptors. Our findings shed light on specific mechanisms by which MaE induces neurotoxicity in early life stages in fish and contributes to improvement of the conservation strategy for this species.
