Definitions of Ageing According to the Perspective of the Psychology of Ageing: A Scoping Review

In the last decades, the scientific interest in ageing has increased due to the progressive ageing of the global population and due to the importance of guaranteeing the elder people and the next generations a good quality of life and biopsychological well-being. However, nowadays, there is not a common and accepted definition of ageing. This situation may refer to the complexity and relevance of the ageing topic and it means that the concept of ageing needs to be understood in a deeper way as a multidimensional and complex process that includes different elements distinctive. The main goal of this review is to explore the definitions and conceptual models of ageing according to a psychological point of view, through a biopsychosocial approach, that integrates biological, psychological, and social aspects with the main goal of a better understanding of the complexity of the process itself.

METHODS

We conducted a review of the literature through PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases, and we followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, analysing papers written in English between 2002 and 2023.

RESULTS

The review showed different conceptual models of ageing, including Rowe and Kahn's successful ageing model, the World Health Organization's models, and others like the "Selection, Optimization and Compensation" Model. Also, the determinants and predictors of ageing have been analysed highlighting the individual variability and the multidimensional nature of ageing. The geographic diversity of the included studies allowed for the analysis of cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental differences in the conceptualisation of ageing.

CONCLUSIONS

The results emphasise the importance of targeted interventions and programs aimed at promoting well-being during ageing, considering the complexity and multidimensionality of the ageing process.

What Does It Mean to "Age Well" Among British and Javanese Older Adults? A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate perceptions of what it means to "age well" and to explore similarities and differences between a Western and non-Western culture (Britain and Java).

METHODS

Qualitative interviews explored how Javanese and British older adults defined aging well, establishing the similarities and differences between cultures. Javanese (n = 14) and British (n = 15) adults aged 61-80 (mean age = 68) participated. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and organized with NVivo.

RESULTS

Four themes were identified that captured what it means to age well across cultures: (a) good health is a springboard for aging well; (b) holding a positive outlook is a decisive factor in aging well; (c) "having enough" and "feeling safe" provide peace of mind; and (d) spirituality and religiosity provide tranquility. Although both cultures mentioned similar factors, there were variations in the interpretations and emphasis within themes. For example, Javanese participants emphasized the importance of the social environment whereas British participants highlighted the physical environment.

DISCUSSION

Differences between cultures are important for understanding how best to support people as they age. For example, in Java, aging well may be best supported by providing a vibrant social environment. For people in Britain, having a safe and secure physical environment may be more important.

Perceptions of Successful Aging among Asian Americans

The current study explored Asian Americans' lay perceptions of successful aging and examined the differences and similarities between Asian Americans and White/Caucasian Americans. One hundred forty-five Asian American adults and 86 White/Caucasian adults were asked how they view successful aging. Open-ended responses were coded for recurring themes. The theme most often mentioned by Asian Americans was health, followed by quality of life, activities/interests, and social resources. Compared to White/Caucasian participants, Asian Americans' meaning of successful aging in the current study did not differ greatly in terms of major themes mentioned, but Asian Americans were more likely to mention certain themes, such as physical appearance and youthful look. In sum, the findings suggest that Asian Americans have a multifaceted understanding of successful aging, and reinforce the importance of cultural variations of the perceptions of successful aging.

Biological sex influences psychological aspects of the biopsychosocial model related to chronic pain intensity and interference among South Korean patients with chronic secondary musculoskeletal pain in rheumatic diseases

Introduction

Pain is a prominent contributor to negative personal and social outcomes, including increased disability and mortality, in many rheumatic diseases. In the Biopsychosocial model of chronic pain, psychological and social factors share roles with the biology of the injury in determining each patient's pain and suffering. The current study explored factors associated with clinical pain intensity and interference among patients with chronic secondary musculoskeletal pain in rheumatic diseases.

Methods

In total, 220 patients experiencing chronic secondary musculoskeletal pain participated. Biological factors (age, biological sex, pain condition, pain duration, pain sensitivity, and comorbidity), socio-economic factors, psychological factors (pain catastrophizing and depressive symptoms), and pain intensity and interference were measured. Descriptive, multivariable linear regression and partial correlation analyses were conducted. Subgroup analysis by sex was conducted to examine differences in how different factors affect the pain experience.

Results

The mean age of the participants was 52.3 years (SD = 12.07) and ranged from 22 to 78. Average pain intensity was 3.01 (0-10 scale) and average total pain interference score was 21.07 (0-70 scale). Partial correlation found positive correlations between pain intensity and interference with depression (intensity: R = 0.224; p = 0.0011; interference: R = 0.351; p < 0.001) and pain catastrophizing (intensity: R = 0.520; p < 0.001; interference: R = 0.464; p < 0.001). In males, pain condition (β = -0.249, p = 0.032) and pain catastrophizing (R = 0.480, p < 0.001) were associated with pain intensity. In males, the simple correlation between pain intensity and depression (R = 0.519; p < 0.001) was driven by pain catastrophizing. In females, pain catastrophizing (R = 0.536, p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (R = 0.228, p = 0.0077) were independently associated with pain intensity. Age (β = -0.251, p = 0.042) and pain catastrophizing (R = 0.609, p < 0.001) were associated with pain interference in males, while depressive symptoms (R = 0.439, p < 0.001) and pain catastrophizing (R = 0.403, p < 0.001) were associated with pain interference in females. Again, in males, the simple correlation between pain interference and depression (R = 0.455; p < 0.001) was driven by pain catastrophizing.

Discussion

In this study, females were more directly affected by depressive symptoms than males, regarding pain intensity and interference. Pain catastrophizing was a significant factor influencing chronic pain for both males and females. Based on these findings, a sex-specific approach to the Biopsychosocial model should be considered in understanding and managing pain among Asians with chronic secondary musculoskeletal pain.

What Can Buffer the Impact of Social Support on Chinese Older Adults' Life Satisfaction?

This study aims to test the moderating effects of home health care, home-help service, and older adults' attitudes toward aging on the relationship between social support and life satisfaction among Chinese older adults. The study used a sample of 5,578 Chinese home-dwelling older adults. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to test the hypothesized effects along with gender and Hukou type differences. The results show that home health care significantly buffers the impact of social support on life satisfaction, and this buffering effect remains same across gender groups and Hukou groups. The findings of the study provide unique and contemporary theoretical and practical implications.

Exploring Pain Management Among Asian Immigrants with Chronic Pain: Self-Management and Resilience

Asians immigrants (AIs) are one of the fastest growing racial groups in many countries globally. Despite pain prevalence, studies on chronic pain management among AIs is limited in the literature. An integrative review was conducted exploring the current state of science on chronic pain management among AIs. Several databases were used to identify related articles and 15 studies met the inclusion criteria. Two major themes emerged: (a) self-management, pertaining to how AIs take responsibility for their pain, and (b) resilience, their adaptive behaviors indicating low levels of pain-related dysfunction and burden despite chronic pain severity. Resilience plays a significant role in the mechanism by which self-management works in pain among AIs. Chronic pain management is a complex process where challenges to effective treatments exist. Findings have significant implications to healthcare providers and the general pain population. Future research directions include the necessity for increased participation of AIs in studies.

Anxiety about aging, resilience and health Status among Chinese older adults: Findings from Honolulu and Wuhan

A growing body of literature found that anxiety about aging is related to health and well-being of older adults. However, very few studies have been conducted on Chinese older adults residing in different countries and examined the role of resilience. Using the Pearlin's Stress Process Model, this study aims to fill in this gap by examining the relationship between anxiety about aging as the stressor and health status among Chinese older adults living in Honolulu, the United States (N = 292) and Wuhan, China (N = 532). The survey data were collected through June 2017 to September 2018, using snowball and convenience sampling strategy. The moderating role of resilience on the focal relationship is also explored. Results showed that for both samples, the negative relationship between anxiety about aging and self-rated health was significantly moderated by resilience (18 % and 13 %, respectively), implying the stress-buffering role of resilience. Although both mean levels of resilience and anxiety about aging were lower for the Honolulu sample, the moderating effect appeared to be stronger, implying that older adults in the Honolulu sample might rely more on psychological resources such as resilience in coping with stressors, compared with their counterparts in Wuhan. However, the moderating effect of resilience did not work for the association between anxiety about aging and number of chronic conditions for both samples. Our findings suggest that future research needs to take into account both social and psychological resources when examining anxiety about aging and health status among Chinese older adults residing in different cultural contexts.

The stress and coping experiences among Chinese rural older adults in welfare housing: through the lens of life review

Purposes: Responding to the growing needs of the largest aging population in the world, China has been experimenting interventions introduced from other countries to serve its older citizens. Using the life review approach, this study aimed to understand stress and coping experiences of a group of rural older adults living in public welfare housing, and to identify the effect of life review on their perceptions of quality of life. Methods: This study used an experimental research design with qualitative interviews. Analyses mainly focused on qualitative interview data of participants in the experimental group (n=24). Quantitative analyses were conducted to compare changes in the measure of quality of life between the experimental group and the control group (n=22). Results: Qualitative analyses indicated that salient life course stressors among rural Chinese old adults included financial strains, health concerns, and loss of loved ones. Such stressors were intertwined with historical and social changes they experienced in China. Coping strategies developed to survive a harsh young adulthood were used to deal with aging challenges and adaption to the welfare housing. Quantitative analysis found those who went through life review reported significant improvement in perceived quality of life compared to the control group. Discussion: Life review showed preliminary acceptability and effectiveness among the most disadvantaged and marginalized older group in China. It suggests this approach can be adapted to help understand life experience of older adults from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and to bring about positive changes in their wellbeing.

How Do Older Adults Define Successful Aging? A Scoping Review

Successful aging is a prominent theory that describes the aging process and the expected activities and behaviors older adults should engage in or exhibit to age successfully. Although this theory is used to gauge the extent to which older adults are aging successfully, older adults' experiences and perspectives of what successful aging means to them are missing from the theory. A five-step scoping review framework was used to explore and synthesize the existing research that investigated older adults' perspectives on successful aging. Twelve main themes were found and ranged from the importance of social relationships and interactions to having a good death. Findings indicated older adults do not define successful aging as strictly as is found in the literature. Old age and the aging process from the views of older adults provide future directions for theory development and research.

Perspectives on successful ageing: The views of Chinese older adults living in Australia on what it means to age well

OBJECTIVES

High immigration has resulted in a culturally diverse ageing population. This study aims to examine the meaning of successful ageing among late-life immigrants ageing in a new cultural environment.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews focused on the subjective experience of ageing well were conducted with 11 Chinese older adults who had moved to Australia in later life. Interviews were conducted in participants' native language and analysed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Eleven themes were identified. A collectivist cultural ideal relating to avoiding burden to children underpinned a number of themes, including the importance of good health and financial security. Preferences regarding retaining or relinquishing traditional cultural expectations of dependence on adult children varied between participants, suggesting some postmigration shift in values.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides insights into the nuances of ageing from a novel cultural perspective, and highlights the role of postmigration adaptation in cultural values.

Successful Aging and Chronic Osteoarthritis

Background: Aging is commonly accepted as a time period of declining heath in most cases. This review aimed to examine the research base concerning the use of the term 'successful aging', a process and outcome deemed desirable, but challenging to attain. A second was to provide related information to demonstrate how health professionals as well as individuals can aim for a 'successful aging' process and outcome, despite the presence of disabling osteoarthritis. Methods: Information specifically focusing on 'successful aging' and the concept of improving opportunities for advancing 'successful aging' despite osteoarthritis was sought. Results: Among the many articles on 'successful aging', several authors highlight the need to include, a broader array of older adults into the conceptual framework. Moreover, conditions such as osteoarthritis should not necessarily preclude the individual from attaining a personally valued successful aging outcome. Conclusions: Pursuing more inclusive research and research designs, and not neglecting to include people with chronic osteoarthritis can potentially heighten the life quality of all aging individuals, while reducing pain and depression, among other adverse aging and disability correlates among those with osteoarthritis.

Systematic Review: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Among Hmong Adults in the USA

Although disparities in the burden of disease and illness experienced across major racial and ethnic groups in the USA is well known, little is known about subgroups, including the Hmong population. This review sought to determine the current state of health disparities related to health promotion and disease prevention among Hmong adults from 1975 to 2015. Seventy-one descriptive (qualitative, mixed methods, and quantitative) studies were reviewed. Most focused on two areas: (1) health status (mainly breast and cervical cancers) and (2) health-related behaviors. This literature review confirms the existence of health disparities related to health promotion and disease prevention in the Hmong adult population. Effective intervention relies on identifying these disparities. A possible explanation for these disparities is the lack of health data collected on subgroup populations, which include the Hmong adult population. More research and more comprehensive health policies at the organizational level are needed to allow data to be collected on subgroup populations in order to better understand the social determinants that place the Hmong people at risk.

Can We Talk About It Now? Recognizing the Optimal Time to Initiate End-of-Life Care Discussions with Older Chinese Americans and Their Families

INTRODUCTION

Older Chinese Americans often defer end-of-life care discussions. Researchers sought to explore how to engage older Chinese Americans and their families in end-of-life care discussions and to understand the optimal timing to initiate such discussions.

METHODS

Individual, semistructured interviews were conducted with 14 community-dwelling older Chinese Americans, 9 adult children, and 7 clinicians. The data were collected and analyzed using focused ethnographic methodology.

RESULTS

Older Chinese Americans and their families would discuss end-of-life care when introduced at "optimal times," which included after-triggering events (e.g., death of loved ones, fall accidents), changes in health status, or advanced age.

DISCUSSION

Adult children are not expected to initiate end-of-life care discussions with their parents. Thus, culturally congruent health care that could better engage Chinese Americans in such discussions would be optimized by having clinicians proactively assess their patients' readiness and initiate such discussion at optimal times.

Successful aging as a multidimensional concept: An integrative review

Background: Successful aging as an umbrella term with a large amount of literature has emerged with a variety of meanings and dimensions in different studies. This article aims at determining what dimensions contribute to constructing the concept of successful aging. Methods: The method used in this study is an integrative review of published literature related to successful aging. This method includes both qualitative and quantitative studies. Data searching was conducted during November and December 2014 and was then updated in October 2015. First, 2543 articles were identified, and after the screening phase, 76 articles were eligible for inclusion in the integrative review. Results: The results specified 14 subcategories and 5 main categories of successful aging: social well-being, psychological wellbeing, physical health, spirituality and transcendence, and environment and economic security. Conclusion: The present study provides a thorough understanding of successful aging dimensions and proposes the importance of the multidimensional concept of successful aging at the individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels for future studies and policymaking on population aging.

Successful Aging Among African American Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes

Objectives

Rowe and Kahn's concept of successful aging remains an important model of well-being; additional research is needed, however, to identify how economically and socially disadvantaged older adults experience well-being, including the role of life events. The findings presented here help address this gap by examining the subjective construction of well-being among urban African American adults (age ≥ 50) with Type 2 diabetes.

Method

As part of the National Institute on Aging-funded Subjective Experience of Diabetes among Urban Older Adults study, ethnographers interviewed African American older adults with diabetes (n = 41) using an adaptation of the McGill Illness Narrative Interview. Data were coded using an inductively derived codebook. Codes related to aging, disease prognosis, and "worldview" were thematically analyzed to identify constructions of well-being.

Results

Participants evaluate their well-being through comparisons to the past and to the illnesses of friends and family. Diabetes self-care motivates social engagement and care of others. At times, distrust of medical institutions means well-being also is established through nonadherence to suggested biomedical treatment.

Discussion

Hardship and illness in participants' lives frame their diabetes experience and notions of well-being. Providers need to be aware of the social, economic, and political lenses shaping diabetes self-management and subjective well-being.

Predictors of healthy ageing: public health policy targets

BACKGROUND

The public health policy agenda oriented towards healthy ageing becomes the highest priority for the European countries. The article discusses the healthy ageing concept and its possible determinants with an aim to identify behavioral patterns related to healthy ageing in selected European countries.

METHODS

The healthy ageing is assessed based on a composite indicator of self-assessed health, functional capabilities and life meaningfulness. The logistic regression models are used to assess the impact of the healthy lifestyle index, psycho-social index and socio-economic status on the probability of healthy ageing (i.e. being healthy at older age). The lifestyle and psychosocial indexes are created as a sum of behaviors that might be important for healthy ageing. Models are analyzed for three age groups of older people: 60-67, 68-79 and 80+ as well as for three groups of countries representing Western, Southern and Central-Eastern Europe.

RESULTS

The lifestyle index covering vigorous and moderate physical activity, consumption of vegetables and fruits, regular consumption of meals and adequate consumption of liquids is positively related to healthy ageing, increasing the likelihood of being healthy at older age with each of the items specified in the index. The score of the index is found to be significantly higher (on average by 1 point for men and 1.1 for women) for individuals ageing healthily. The psychosocial index covering employment, outdoor social participation, indoor activities and life satisfaction is also found to be significantly related to health increasing the likelihood of healthy ageing with each point of the index score. There is an educational gradient in healthy ageing in the population below the age of 68 and in Southern and Central-Eastern European countries. In Western European countries, income is positively related to healthy ageing for females.

CONCLUSIONS

Stimulation physical activity and adequate nutrition are crucial domains for a well-defined public health policy oriented towards healthy ageing. The psychosocial elements related to social participation, engagement, networking and life satisfaction are also found to be health beneficial.

Annual Review of Asian American Psychology, 2014

This 2014 review of Asian American psychology is the sixth review in the series. It includes 316 articles that met the inclusion criteria established by the past five annual reviews. Featured articles were derived from three sources: 137 were generated via the search term "Asian American" in PyscINFO, 111 were generated via a search for specific Asian American ethnic groups, and 32 were generated via author searches of articles that met the inclusion criteria. The top primary topic was health and health-related behaviors, the most frequently employed study design was cross-sectional, and the most studied Asian American ethnic group was Chinese. This year's review includes information on the target population of the primary topic, the age range and developmental period of participants, and whether the study design was cross-sectional or longitudinal. It also identifies top authors and journals contributing to the 2014 annual review. These new features reveal that the most common target population of the primary topic was youths; studies most commonly included emerging adults ages 18-25; cross-sectional study design was employed more often than longitudinal design; the top contributor to the 2014 review was Stephen Chen, who authored the highest number of papers included; and the Asian American Journal of Psychology generated the highest number of publications for this review.
