Young women's alcohol expectancies for sexual risk-taking mediate the link between sexual enhancement motives and condomless sex when drinking

The prevalence of alcohol consumption and its related factors in adolescents: Findings from Global School-based Student Health Survey

BACKGROUND

Alcohol consumption has become very common among adolescents in recent years and its prevalence varies in different countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of alcohol consumption and related factors in adolescents aged 11 to 16 years.

METHODS

This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 288385 adolescents (girls, 53.9% of total) aged 11 to 16 years. In the present study, the GSHS data (2003-2018) available to public on the websites of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and WHO was used. To investigate the factors affecting alcohol consumption, univariate and multivariate logistics models with 95% confidence limits were used.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of alcohol consumption in adolescents was 25.2%, which was 28.3% and 22.4% in boys and girls, respectively. Among the surveyed countries, the highest prevalence was in Seychelles (57.9%) and the lowest in Tajikistan (0.7). Multivariate analysis showed that the Age for 16 and more than 16 years old (OR = 3.08,95%CI: 2.54-3.74), truancy for more than 10 days (OR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.08-1.43), loneliness at sometimes of the times (OR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.01-1.07), insomnia at most of the times (OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 1.70-2.01), daily activity (OR = 1.03, 95%CI: 1.00-1.07), bullied for 1-9 Days in a month (OR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.09-1.40), cigarette (OR = 4.01, 95%CI: 3.86-4.17), used marijuana for more than 10 days in a month (OR = 5.58, 95%CI: 4.59-7.78), had sex (OR = 2.76, 95%CI: 2.68-2.84), and suicide plan (OR = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.42-1.54) were important factors affecting drinking alcohol. (Table 4). In this study, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 42.79%, 93.96%, 70.80%, and 82.75.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the results of the present study, the prevalence of alcohol consumption among teenagers was high. Therefore, it is suggested that demographic, family, and psychological factors should be taken into consideration in health programs for the prevention and treatment of alcohol consumption in adolescents.

Effects of Typical and Binge Drinking on Sexual Consent Perceptions and Communication

Young adults frequently engage in sexual activity after consuming alcohol and, consequently, may try to communicate sexual consent while intoxicated. We aimed to assess how people's drinking behaviors relate to their consent perceptions and communication with their current sexual partners. Using aggregated data from a 30-day daily diary study, young adults (n = 86, 77.9% women, 86% in a monogamous relationship) reported instances of partnered sexual activity and their perceptions of whether that activity was consensual. For each partnered sexual event, participants reported what they said or did to perceive the sexual activity as consensual. Responses were coded as active consent communication (i.e., using verbal or nonverbal cues) or tacit knowledge (i.e., using context to understand consent). During an exit survey, participants retrospectively reported how many days they drank (i.e., typical drinking) during the 30-day study and whether they binge drank. Typical and binge drinking were associated with identifying sexual experiences as consensual. Participants who binge drank relied less on active consent communication and more on context compared with those who did not binge drink. Young adults who binge drink may rely more on tacit knowledge because alcohol impedes their ability to process complex stimuli-such as active consent cues.

Substance use in a sexual context: The association of sex-related substance use motives with substance choice and use behaviors

BACKGROUND

Substance use before sex is associated with riskier behaviors. Sex-related substance use motives may explain pre-sex substance use. We explored what sex-related motives are associated with alcohol versus drug use, and which motives underlie heavier use.

METHODS

A sample of 936 participants (50% male, 80% White) completed an Internet survey about sexuality. Those who drank before sex (n=657) reported on six sex-related drinking motives; those who used drugs before sex (n=271) reported on six (parallel) sex-related drug use motives. The frequency of endorsement of each motive between drinkers and drug users was compared with z-distributions. Logistic regressions assessed whether motives were associated with substance use frequency and intoxication before sex.

RESULTS

Substance use to relax and to get a sex partner to use were more commonly endorsed for alcohol than drugs; substance use to improve performance and enhance experience were more commonly endorsed for drugs. Most motives were associated with alcohol frequency and intoxication before sex. None were associated with drug frequency; some were associated with drug intoxication.

CONCLUSIONS

Alcohol was generally used to facilitate sex, and drugs to enhance sex. Sex-related drinking motives were associated with drinking before sex; sex-related drug use motives were less predictive.

Characteristics of Sex Events, Partners, and Motivations and Their Associations with HIV-Risk Behavior in a Daily Diary Study of High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)

In the United States, men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be at high-risk for HIV and other STIs, and condoms represent the most popular, affordable, and accessible method of prevention. Although a vast body of research has explored various factors associated with condom use in MSM, fewer studies have explored situation-level characteristics that affect their decisions about sex partners and condom use. Daily diary studies are well-suited to help improve our understanding of these event-level factors in detail, including the sex events themselves, partner characteristics, and motivations. As part of a larger study using ecological momentary assessment methods, high-risk MSM completed daily diary surveys about their sexual behavior on their smartphones each day for 30 days. This study explored detailed descriptive characteristics of sex events, partner characteristics, and motivations for sex and condom use, and examined whether specific aspects of these characteristics were associated with having condomless anal sex (CAS) with high-risk partners. High-risk CAS was common among MSM, with the majority of participants having met their partners online and many reporting sex the same day they met. Results showed that the odds of CAS were not higher with partners met online versus those met in other ways, but MSM were more likely to have asked online partners about their HIV status and testing history before sex. The odds of engaging in high-risk CAS was higher when MSM reported intimacy or self-assurance motives. Not having condoms readily available was a CAS motivation reported more commonly when MSM had sex with high-risk partners. Findings suggest that interventions should incorporate strategies that help MSM be safer specifically when meeting partners online and when having sex for intimacy or re-assurance. Interventions that remind MSM to carry condoms at opportune moments may also help reduce some HIV risk.

Patterns of Sexual Risk Behaviors among College Women: A Latent Profile Analysis

Sexual risk behavior is common among college women, but little work has identified risk patterns or correlates. The current study utilized latent profile analysis to identify sexual risk patterns among 1,534 college women. Results supported four classes: low sexual risk (68.2%), moderate sexual risk: party hookups (11.0%), moderate sexual risk: risky partners (17.6%), and high sexual risk (3.1%). Membership in the moderate and high-risk classes were associated with coping motives, drinking, and risky peer norms, while membership in the low risk class was associated with sexual satisfaction and low peer approval of risky sex. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Examining the influence of gender and sexual motivation in college hookups

OBJECTIVE

Hooking up is common in college, and has been linked to heavy drinking. Hookups have positive as well as negative consequences, and thus the motivations for hooking up are complex. Yet, little research has focused on these motivations. The present study examined the role that gender and drinking patterns play in the relationship between sexual motivation and penetrative hookups.

PARTICIPANTS

Heavy drinking college students (N = 396) completed online surveys between September/October 2009.

METHOD

Sexual motivation, alcohol, and hooking up were assessed.

RESULTS

Enhancement motives and drinking frequency predicted more frequent oral and vaginal sex when hooking up, while peer and partner motives predicted anal sex. Men endorsed greater enhancement motives, peer motives, and hookup oral and vaginal sex. For men, coping motives predicted oral and vaginal sex and peer motives predicted anal sex.

CONCLUSIONS

Results provide greater insight into the reasons why college students engage in penetrative hookups.

The Association between Alcohol and Sexual Risk Behaviors among College Students: A Review

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Alcohol use is prevalent among college students and may contribute to sexual risk behavior engagement. A narrative review of the recent empirical literature examining the association between alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors among college student samples was conducted. The purpose of this review was to: (a) review studies examining the association between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviors; and (b) overview research investigating alcohol expectancies and partner characteristics as factors that may influence the alcohol-risky sex relation among college students.

RECENT FINDINGS

Findings regarding the direct link between alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors were mixed. Results suggest a more nuanced association between alcohol and risky sexual behaviors that is influenced by alcohol expectancies and partner characteristics.

SUMMARY

Results highlight the importance of considering additional factors that may influence the alcohol-risky sex relation. Future interventions targeting alcohol-related sexual risk behavior engagement among college students are needed.
